The Splatoon 2 Splatfest events have been pretty darn quirky so far, with topics ranging from fun to outright bizarre. The next event in Europe is playing things relatively safe, though it's still a good showdown.
Kicking off on 9th December at 3pm UK / 4pm CET, it's a battle of films against books.
So, will you be Team Film or Team Book?

I’m a lazy person without an imagination, so Team Film all the way! (That is, assuming the North American Splatfest has the same theme...)
Aside from the fact that I rarely consume any of the two (too busy with games and life obviously), watching a movie doesn‘t take up nearly as much of my time as reading a book. Plus, Pearl still hasn‘t lost a single european Splatfest since the World Premiere.
What is a book?
Film !
Without books, there was no criativity for making movies, so...
They should've broadened the topic into video vs. all kind of books.
I prefer watching TV shows over watching movies. And I read more comic books than normal books.
So when they ask me "Are you a film fanatic or a book buff?", I can only answer with "neither".
I mean, I occasionally watch movies and read books, but not as much as I did as a child.
This seems like another one-sided splatfest again. Although, I have seen a few Team book supporters.
Team Book all the way. Reading hones your critical thinking skills and results in intellectual advancement. Watching movies will usually just dull your mental ability, unless its a documentary or something.
Becoming a smarter person, learning, and opening my mind to a world of new ideas > mindless entertainment
The book is always better than the movie.
book. i rarely watch any movies.
There's some disagreement as to whether the quirkiness and imagination of the European SplatFests trump the safer but more crowd-pleasing options that the North Americans are given. And there's clearly only one way of settling this.
With a SplatFest.
@JubilifeRival This is arguably a pretty mindless assessment of the entire medium that is 'film'.
There's plenty of trash literature and insightful cinema that would flip your argument on its head.
That said, I'm still Team Book, but I think your dismissal of film as an art-form (or at least form of entertainment) is much too sweeping.
and film wins...
unless the charlie brown (comic) books win....
I hate reading
@Maxz Yeah, I probably should’ve qualified my argument more. I’m not denying the existence of insightful cinema (I did mention documentaries) but I don’t think film can provide the level of detail literature can. That detail is necessary for the most substantial, informed change in one’s worldview/opinion.
I think film has a very important place in culture and it can definitely improve us as people, but books still trump film by far in that category.
Books are, 99 times out of 100, better than films. There have been plenty of decent film adaptations of books, but at the end of the day books commonly leave more to the imagination. Plus, some films (based on books) take some major liberties with their source material....Percy Jackson books vs. the films, for example.
Team Film! Go Pearl!
Team book all the way
Glad ain't got splatoon 2 with the amount of films and books I own it would be an impossible choice.
@ShadJV
I would say that The Lord of the Rings is the exception to the rule.
@thesilverbrick If it has, it's gonna be FILM > BOOK as well for most people. Because in the US, you haven't really made it unless your story has been made into a film.
I’d be struggling to pick between the two but I’m sticking with Pearl so Film it is. 🎬
This Splatfest is a clear indication that more people should read. Start with 'Fahrenheit 451' by Ray Bradbury. A great story that truly demonstrates the importance of the freedom that can only be attained by a freely literate general public.
Don't allow yourselves to get lazy. They will steal your soul, break it apart, then sell it back to you, piece by emaciated piece.
Great. It looks like Europe is probably going to miss the Christmas Splatfest that I’m certain the Americans (and possibly Japanese) will probably get.
But oh well, I’m obsessed with film, so film I guess. :/
Team Book. Marina for the win.
How many times have you seen a movie and said "Hey that was better than the book!"
Me neither.
I will pick film.... because i love animation. The depths it can get to, when done correctly. Adding the amazing soundtracks that is givin' and the showing us expressions and visuals..... that is why i pick film
I do believe that books are better then the movie adaptation, for the most part, but I look at other films that aren't a book adaptation. Pixar, Studio Ghibli, Disney, etc. Pretty vast selection, from animation to live-action. La La Land, The Dark Knight, Gladiator, Etc ... so yea, Go Team Film
Books, but there are definite examples of great cinematography and rewriting, that sometimes overshadows the book it's based off. For instance The Shining. The book itself is pretty good, but the petrifying essence that the movie gives off, thanks to the visuals and sound design, that a book obviously can't do, makes it superior to it's original source.
I do admire books - from afar. So films for me!
@shani Totally, something like "reading" or "watching"... although that could get a bit lewd lol. Yeah, on the other hand I don't need my 9 year old saying he likes "watching". Just too creepy for me, but I know what you mean.
@Aurumonado Never
@Tyranexx I'll bet the movie Caddy Shack is better than the book version that Brian read to the kids on Family Guy... but that's all I can think of.
Looks like I'm going with Marina for the first time. Books, all day, every day. Love a good movie, but a book can transport you for hours upon hours upon hours. Also, doesn't need electricity, you can take it to the beach, the pub, the park, wherever. And unlike a tablet or portable DVD player, you can drop it, get sand inside it, even spill water on it. Winner! (But suspect film will win the Splatfest.)
Eh, it's difficult to really say one over the other, especially when you compare a novel and a film (such as, say, James Joyce's Ulysses vs. Andrei Tarkovsky's Stalker) that could only be done and work in their respective mediums.
FILM!
I do love to read but for most gamers under say 30 yrs old, movies would easily win out as a favorite format. No more Harry Potter books. Forgotten Realms ia naff at this point. Everyone's caught up on Game of Thrones and graphic novels/comics don't count.
I’m a reader
There are plenty of intricacies in cinematography that let you be very detailed. Also sometimes books can't convey the same things as movies can, so I'll go with film.
That is going to be the most lopsided Splatfest ever. Film is going to be so much more popular.
I'm gonna do a book!
Film will probably win, but book is better 8)
I hope the NA Splatfest is different. I think this may be the worst one ever. Really? Books versus film? I think a better splatfest would have been TV versus film.
@shaneoh
Did you just say the Lord of the Rings movies are better than the books? The books have so much more to offer. The movies spend a lot of time on the battles, though the movies are quite long the books do a way better job of immersing you into middle earth. Characters, story, excitement not a single thing lacks in the books. Your statement is almost enough reason for me to choose team book
@JubilifeRival Even though I'm more of a film person myself I kind of agree with you. I should get into reading more.
