The European Nintendo Download Update is live, and this week includes two Switch retail titles and the same number of download-only releases; tempting options all-round. The New 3DS gets a port of a previous Wii U title, while multiplayer shenanigans come to the now last-gen home console. On top of that we have some DLC, discounts and a couple of 3DS HOME Themes, so let's get to it.
Nintendo Switch Retail Downloads
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo, €59.99 / £49.99) - Nintendo's latest major retail arrival on Switch lands on 28th April, combining all of the original's content - including free updates and DLC - with an all-new Battle Mode. What we're left with, ultimately, is an outstanding version of an already excellent game, and a contender for best-in-class within the franchise. We awarded it top marks in our Mario Kart 8 Deluxe review.
Puyo Puyo Tetris (SEGA, €39.99 / £34.99) - This is a stylish and enjoyable mash-up of two iconic puzzle styles, with a wide range of modes and variations on each game to enjoy. Throw in decent local and online multiplayer options and you've got an enjoyable title, as we explain in our Puyo Puyo Tetris review
Nintendo Switch eShop
Kamiko (CIRCLE Entertainment, €4.99 / £4.49) - CIRCLE makes its publishing debut on Switch, this is a retro-style release from Flyhigh Works; the game is based around Japanese Shinto beliefs and promises puzzles and demon encounters on the journey through various stages. We'll let you know what we think in a review.
Over Top (HAMSTER, €6.99 / £6.29) - Another entry in the ACA Neo Geo series, in this case a top down racer that builds on the groundwork laid out by developer ADK's previous racer, Thrash Rally. You can expect various features and goodies as normal for an ACA title, and we'll let you know whether this gets into top gear in a review.
New Nintendo 3DS eShop
Ascent of Kings (Nostatic Software, €2.25 / £1.99) - This one is a platforming adventure in which a young brother sets off on an adventure to become a King; with exploration and discovery there are ability boosts to be found, too. Previously released on Wii U, so you can check out our Ascent of Kings review for that version.
3DS eShop DLC
Pic-a-Pix Colour - Small Puzzles 3 (Lightwood Games, €1.99 / £1.99)
Pic-a-Pix Colour - Mixed Puzzles 3 (Lightwood Games, €1.99 / £1.99)
Pic-a-Pix Colour - Large Puzzles 3 (Lightwood Games, €1.99 / £1.99)
3DS HOME Themes
Hello Kitty 3D toy (Sanrio, €0.99 / £0.89)
Hello Kitty runs (Sanrio, €0.99 / £0.89)
3DS eShop Temporary Discounts
Ambition of the Slimes (CIRCLE Entertainment, €2.99 / £2.87 until 18th May, normally €5.00 / £4.79)
Castle Conqueror Defender (CIRCLE Entertainment, €2.99 / £2.93 until 18th May, normally €4.99 / £4.89)
Puzzle Labyrinth (CIRCLE Entertainment, €2.99 / £2.57 until 18th May, normally €5.00 / £4.29)
Snow Moto Racing 3D (Zordix AB, €5.99 / £5.39 until 4th May, normally €7.99 / £7.19)
Mini Sports Collection (Rainy Frog, €3.99 / £3.59 until 18th May, normally €4.99 / £4.49)
Wii U eShop
Use Your Words (Smiling Buddha Games, €14.99 / £14.99) - This is a collection of four adult-centric minigames (though there is a 'family filter') that, rather like The Jackbox Party Pack 3 on Switch utilises phones and tablets as controllers. It's all about multiplayer and others can apparently stream and watch games in action, the idea sounds promising; we'll see whether the execution delivers.
Wii U eShop DLC
Minecraft: Wii U Edition - Glide Beasts Track Pack (Mojang, €2.99 / £2.39)
Minecraft: Wii U Edition - Glide Track Pack Season Pass (Mojang, €9.99 / £7.99)
Pic-a-Pix Colour - Large Puzzles 3 (Lightwood Games, €1.99 / £1.99)
Pic-a-Pix Colour - Small Puzzles 3 (Lightwood Games, €1.99 / £1.99)
Pic-a-Pix Colour - Mixed Puzzles 3 (Lightwood Games, €1.99 / £1.99)
Wii U eShop Temporary Discounts
Nano Assault NEO (Shin'en Multimedia, €7.49 / £6.70 until 18th May, normally €9.99 / £8.99)
Twin Robots (Ratalaika Games, €3.74 / £3.36 until 4th May, normally €4.99 / £4.49)
Back to Bed (Bedtime Digital, €4.99 / £4.49 until 24th May, normally €9.99 / £8.99)
Plenty to choose from this week, so let us know what you'll be downloading in the poll and comments below.

Puyo Puyo Tetris is a rip-off in Europe. The game's a rip-off in general. Shin'en have never had a decent sale price for Nano Assault Neo.
Strongest Switch retail week since day one.
Got Puyo Puyo Tetris and it's so fun! Now soon I'll get MK8 Deluxe!
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I'm personally getting many hours out of it so far so can't complain really.
Two games in one week. Still would like some discounts on the Wii U and 3DS eShop, though...
eShop prices are extortionate. I've picked up MK8D for £40 and Puyo Puyo Tetris for £30.
Yeah they tell you that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is releasing tomorrow, they do not tell you what time
Hmm, was hoping to see the Spectre of Torment update for Shovel Knight. I guess European 3DS/Wii U players have got to wait a little while long.
Hype for MK8 and Puyo Puyo Tetris though.
Puyo Puyo Tetris will be a good choice for me. The demo has kept me busy since it was made available so the full game should keep me happy throughout my Switch' lifespan. Kamiko, I'm not so sure about. Yeah, its cheap, but... Well, if at some point I wanna play something different to Tetris, I'll look to that as another option.
puyo puyo tetris is only 30$ in the us, europe got shafted again...
Anyone picking up Puyo Puyo Tetris, it works out a fair bit cheaper buying it from the NA Eshop.
I wish Sega had released the 3DS version of Puyo Puyo Tetris here.
@OorWullie Not tried this yet. Do I need a second Nintendo ID? Does the game then appear in the same place as your European eShop games on the home screen of the Switch?
No Kirby anniversary theme?
I'd pick Puyo Puyo Tetris if I had Switch but I started playing Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine instead. It's good to see Brentalfloss keep his promise and bring Choose Your Words on Wii U. I just don't have any interest in it myself.
Does anybody know what time you can usually download the retail games? I'll be out most of the day tomorrow so was hoping to download MK today.
@msm2000 Mario Kart technically releases tomorrow (not today), so you should be able to download it immediately at midnight tonight.
Pick up MK8 tomorrow in physical form.
@msm2000
Retail downloads are typically available at midnight.
I'm surprised Nintendo didn't offer a preload option for MK8 though, since it'll be a big one.
@RupeeClock @thesilverbrick Thanks for the replies. Yeah, I have been checking hoping for a preload but nothing available. Anyway, not long to wait now I suppose.
@BionicDodo Yes, and yes. Make an extra US account and set it to non-tax state such as Delaware (19707) in the eShop when asked. Do NOT change the region of your current account, as you will lose all currency that was previously on that account.
@BionicDodo I copied this from Destuctoid,it explains it better than I can.
"Go to the Nintendo Account user page . Click "Create a Nintendo Account." Enter your date of birth (it helps if it's real as you can easily get your account back if something goes wrong).
Enter all of the pertinent information above, including an email that's different from your core region. Select your country of residence, which will influence which eShop you see — the big ones are United Kingdom (near the top), United States (near the bottom), and Japan (in the middle). Click submit, then verify your email and log back in to ensure everything is correct. Go follow the steps here and create your UserID (Nintendo's new account thing).
Create a new profile on your Switch from the homescreen (you can name it the same as your UserID just to keep things in order), then click link UserID, and enter the information you created online (logging in with your email address or said UseriD). Bam, you're done — the Switch will log you into that region's eShop, no strings attached."
I'm very interested to know what we're getting next week though. I think we've already gotten past most of the fodder. So it should be nothing but good stuff now, right? Splasher? Enter the Gungeon? Anyone?
MK8 Deluxe physical for me, potential GotY!
Exciting week if you don't own a Switch.
Mario Kart 8 and Kamiko for me!
Mario Kart and Puyo Puyo Tetris for me. Both physically, though.
Nothing for me. Wii u isn't getting anything exciting as i was hoping. Some VC sales or a final e shop sale would be great. Either way I've got loads to play so no problem for me.
Just started odd world new 'n' tasty on Wii u having never played it...... REALLY impressed, I'm enjoying it loads!!
Mario Kart should be popping through the mailbox, will consider Kamiko once a review pops up.
Insane prices, why would anyone pay £49.99 to download Mario kart when you can buy it physically for £42
No doubt there will be people that will, I'll just never personally understand their reasoning for it.
I get the convenience side of it but unless money is no object to you it just makes no sense at all to download it.
Why pay more when you're technically getting less?
I don't understand all the fuss about Kamiko. I already saw too much generous reviews, I'm not happy about that. Yes it cost a few bucks but it is very short and very cheap. I hope TumbleSeed will see some more interest because it looks more content rich.
I really feel bad to see Wonderboy have a score lower than that cheap game.
Tomorrow will buy Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, but still considering WonderBoy and TumbleSeed for the future. Shovel Knight at 25 it's too costly for a digital purchase in my opinion, I think I'll skip it.
P.S.: No TumbleSeed for us europeans (+english)?
Will get Wario Kart and Puyo Tetris on Physical release. A good week!
I will be pickinh up Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Puyo Puyo Tetris.
MK8D was a no-brainer. PPT grabbed me with the demo.
@Marios-love-child I will be buying digital. I have more money than sense.
@JamesR
Clearly you do haha
A decent week, but nothing for me. I've already played lots of Mario Kart 8,and Puro Tetris doesn't appeal to me.
@Marios-love-child If there's a physical copy, I always go physical, but this time around, I may actually go digital. The reasoning being that the game will always be available, no matter when or where.
@Marios-love-child The only Switch retail game i bought digitally was Zelda BoTW, and that was for the unusual reason that the Switch version of that game was sold out at all known online stores in The Netherlands. Even in the store where I bought one of their last 2 Switch systems there was no Zelda.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will be my first physical game then.
@Sinton
Yes I completely get the convenience side of it, it's just the digital pricing structure I strongly disagree with. I just genuinely believe the digital prices are completely unjustified.
If anything they should be cheaper than a physical copy rather than the other way around.
In fairness it's not just a nintendo issue the psn store is just as bad, although they do have sales and offer decent discounts from time to time
@Marios-love-child I totally agree. While I'm a collector (mostly Nintendo), I intended to go full digital once I bought my PS4. But I ended up going physical, as there's no way I'll pay more for less (since I'll never play my PS4 on the go). As you say, digital should be cheaper.
Mario and Puyo Tetris on physical format.
If Puyo Tetris ever turns up at sale price on the eshop I'll trade but it's too expensive at the minute. Even though it is perfect portable gaming entertainment.
I've got PPT as physical already, and physical Mario Kart should arrive tomorrow. My Switch case has room for plenty of games, and even a few memory cards thanks to a couple Switch cart sized Micro SD card holders; so I don't need to worry about not being able to take my physical collection around with me.
It's a simple choice: if you've bought a Switch you're probably already resigned to the need to double dip on MK8; if like me you're still with the Wii U there's definitely nothing here.
@OorWullie Thanks! Right, I'm almost there. I've got the second account setup and I can visit the US eShop, but I can't pay as my card needs to be registered to a US zip code. I assume I need to buy an eShop card from somewhere else, but everywhere I look either won't sell it to me with a UK card or wants way more than $50 for it. Any ideas?
@Bustacap I actually ordered the physical US version from Play-Asia (because it's meant to come with key-chains), and it cost me £35 (that includes cheapest shipping). So you're not saving anything really.
You do have the option to download the US version. Just remember you pay tax separately, so you could be paying roughly US $37 (£28).
@BionicDodo
On my Wii, I had it setup so the country was Brazilian. It actually allowed me to use my UK Debit Card to add Wii Points, as it didn't ask for the post code. It may work using the Switch.
You can order the eShop points from Play-Asia: http://www.play-asia.com/digital_codes/nintendo_eshop/14/711z7
@FX102A There's currently one up at gamerankings.com:
http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/44539/kamiko-switch-eshop-review
Spoiler alert: 8/10.
@SanderEvers Thanks! I picked up a $50 card as it worked out the best value and I have purchased Puyo Puyo Tetris at the cheaper price. Hope Nintendo don't stop this method from working because it has already saved me £10!
Nothing for me this week, I don't understand the hype for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Perhaps because I'm not a blind Nintendo fan like some other people here and the game costs 549 kr in my country. I can't stand Puyo Puyo Tetris' voice acting either.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Is it this expensive? Or do you sya that because it has some years behind it, even being available as discount game for 3DS in Japan?
@BensonUii I thought that was only a one-time thing that Yacht Club did with Shovel Knight on the Mexican eShop, which they had to change very shortly thereafter because of mass abuse by other regions. Is for instance, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, cheaper there atm?
@BionicDodo it might be a bit of a grey area, I'm not sure, but I succesfully bought eShop US cards from offgamers.com before that work out to be quite a lot cheaper in euro's.
@BensonUii Nice, but no I'm not actually from the Vatican Actually I bought it digitally, since it is a pick-up and play title just like Puyo Tetris, in the US eShop with third party cards that came out to be about 54 euro.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Nano Assault Neo-X had a great 2-for-1 sale on PS4. It's essentially the same game, but with PS4 enhancements.
@Mahe But that's no good to Wii U owners.
