It's Media Create Japanese charts time, and this week's result bring good news for Sony in particular, with new releases serving PlayStation systems well; for Nintendo it's a case of steady sales for older releases.
In the software chart we have Capcom's Resident Evil 7: Biohazard leading the way on PS4, with Uta no Prince-sama Repeat Love following behind on Vita. Pokémon Sun and Moon continue to perform rather well in third place considering the fact over three million physical retail copies have previously shipped, while the underwhelming sales for Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World continue, though it has gone past the 50,000 unit landmark. The top 20 is below with lifetime sales in brackets.
- [PS4] Resident Evil 7: Biohazard (Grotesque Ver. included) (Capcom, 01/26/17) – 187,306 (New)

The lack of Wii U titles in that software top 20 is reflected in the system's continued decline, selling just 710 units last week. The 3DS LL (XL) is still second behind the PS4, with small drops also for the 2DS and smaller New 3DS model; results below have last week's sales in brackets.
- PlayStation 4 – 30,778 (26,243)
- New 3DS LL – 17,600 (18,229)
- PlayStation Vita – 10,553 (11,521)
- PlayStation 4 Pro – 9,893 (7,133)
- 2DS – 5,806 (6,203)
- New 3DS – 1,301 (1,625)

- PlayStation 3 – 579 (557)

A quiet week from Nintendo's perspective, with rebooted first-person horror winning the day in Japan.

I want games like Resident Evil 7 on Switch but that'll likely never happen thanks to Nintendo for the 3rd generation in a row releasing limited hardware. Maybe we'll get a spin-off called The Switchable Chronicles.
Edit: This is the first week in like forever that Minecraft on the Wii U has failed to chart. Zelda is probably the last Wii U game that will feature in these charts.
Poor Yoshi. <3
A Resident Evil game for home consoles that is actually good and it's not coming to the Switch but it's being plastered on a Nintendo fan site. Yippe!
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I doubt they will port it on Switch after these numbers.
shouldn't it be biohazard vii: resident evil, if it's japan? also, 'grotesque version' is an awesome name.
Seeing Kingdom Hearts on those charts makes me want a high-end Kingdom Hearts game on Switch even more. I'd settle with a port of the first game for cryin' out loud!
Very low figures for Resi 7
And then I was thinking Resi was coming to the switch
@cfgk24
Considering the times, it's not terrible (there have been worse flops in recent years) but it seems like not just Japan, but globally, the sales, while solid, aren't what Capcom was hoping for after 5 and 6. Hopefully the game has legs because it is an infinitely better game than any of the more recent, action-focused RE's, including 4 (a game I'm a fan of).
@SLIGEACH_EIRE "Maybe we'll get a spin-off called The Switchable Chronicles."
I literally LOL'd. Well done.
Hey, you guys remember when Nintendo fans would mock the Xbox for doing so poorly in Japan generation after generation? And yet, here they are with the XB1, outselling Wii U by almost double in one year's less time despite doing terrible in Japan.
But now, those same fans are claiming that Switch will do great because Japan will go crazy over the portable aspect of the console.
Folks: Japan's market is TINY. It will not dictate the success of a console's overall success at all.
@Gamer83 well said. I for one am LOVING RE7 on my xbox.
Had it been announced for Switch on day 1, I would have held off on the xbox version and purchased a switch day 1.
@Gamer83 I think there is so much dilution in the market these days.
In Olden times - We just used to spend all weekend playing Jet Set Willy on the ZX Spectrum - whichever friends house you went to lol...
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Yeah, you wanted a PS4 clone, we get it. You can stop whining now. I know someone else who's limited.
The Switch is what it is, you won't change anything.
@Kroko Sorry I'm confused, in what world does Switch getting Resident Evil 7 somehow make it a PS4 clone?
btw I'd argue that the XB1 actually is a PS4 clone and that seems to be working out pretty well for Microsoft.
Wii U was unique. Wii U was different. You could play games on it without the use of a TV even! How'd that end up? Hmm, I wonder what could have contributed to the downfall of the Wii U vs. the success of the PS4 clone Xbox...
@Firelork You know you can buy it for other platforms right?
@TwilightOniAngel
You know that wasn't my actual complaint, right?
@gatorboi352
In a lot of ways, RE 7 plays out like one of the old school games. Definitely appreciated the less is more approach to the action. Still provides plenty of combat but it's not the over the top Matrix-style nonsense we got in RE 6. That game was ridiculous at certain points.
@gatorboi352 Then again Wii was different too and it ended up outselling both rivals by a considerable amount.
It's not really the "different" aspect that's the issue here. The Wii U had a host of other problems (the worst definitely being a very bad marketing campaign, even Nintendo didn't seem to know what it was).
@Ernest_The_Crab yeah, but my point was that Wii U's downfall was the lack of a steady stream of a variety of software.
While Wii was a success and very different, it was also a time before smart phones and tablets.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I long for companies to stop trying to make partiy among consoles, and make more unquie games that make these consoes worth owning. Why would I ever buy something like Resident Evil 7 on a console when my old PC still kicks the ever loving hell out of them?
@gatorboi352 I still feel that Wii U despite not doing spectacular could have still done pretty well if they had gotten their act together with their marketing.
Decent/good/excellent marketing would have drawn in much better sales numbers which in turn would have pulled in 3rd parties. It's rather unfortunate they screwed up the marketing from the get-go, never managed to fix it either.
For a microsecond I got really excited seeing a shot of RE7.
Maybe one day...
Terrible RE7 sales. Hopefully, it sells much better in the west.
@gatorboi while the Wii U did have issues regarding library, that was an aftereffect of the main issue which is their failure to pitch their idea of the Wii U to the Customers and Developers.
I bought a Wii U for the first party games and I wasn't disappointed, but for those people who wanted more games / IPs from third parties the Wii U certainly lacked it.
Nintendo Switch isn't gonna follow that fate, the developers and customers are on-board with their switch idea / concept, they have an impressive line-up of games in development that blows the Wii U's library out of the water and they're catering towards both home and handheld users.
Pokemon is still going strong
Think the real news here is xbone sales in Japan last week of 35!
I got Resident Evil 7 for PS4 last week. As a long time RE fan, I am totally loving it. It is a great step in the right direction much like RE4 was.
Now the trick is to not go dip into the problems that RE5 and RE6 made after the innovation of RE4's 3rd person perspective.
I would like another FPS like RE game, just keep it scary and similar to RE's roots like this one was.
It's games like this that I would much rather support then on a Nintendo console but Nintendo generation in and generation out always ate underpowered and it keeps these AAA games away from their consoles.
Curious how 2DS is selling so much more than the regular New 3DS model. 2DS seems to have taken the New 3DS's place in Japan as the "compact" model. But of course, 2DS is a lot more comfortable to play on.
And these are the slow weeks, back during the holiday weeks 2DS was doing 5-figure numbers.
I really hope RE7 comes to Switch because I want to double dip on an amazing game lol. Also, Portable RE7? Not bad...
It's nice to see that the Japanese don't seem all that bothered by the PS4 Pro.
I have re7 on my PS4, took me about 4 days to come around from ehh to good game. I wasn't enamored with the 1st hour or so of gameplay at all.
Anyway...
While the switch needs to get a fps to really garner mainstream attention, I was more wishing kingdom hearts would make its way to the switch instead. But hopefully there is some major third party love coming at e3
I was pretty astounded at the 2ds numbers. I have never really seen anyone in Florida where I live playing one.
I was surprised by Resident Evil's numbers I didn't think these types of games did that good in Japan.
187 thousand copies.
187, police call for homicide.
Incidentally, the call letters are MDK, murder death kill.
Random question, is anyone else hoping for an MDK 3 someday?
I just thought that number was a strange figure for a game all about murder, death, and killing.
