For quite some time it's seemed clear that Gen II Pokémon are coming to Pokémon GO, and as expected the announcement has come to confirm just that. The roll-out of Pokémon Gold and Silver pocket monsters is underway, though the initial numbers (accessed by hatching eggs) are modest; more are coming over the next few months.
There's also going to be a special limited edition Pikachu up for grabs; details are in the trailer and text below.
Professor Willow has discovered Togepi and Pichu hatching from Eggs! Starting later today, Trainers will have the opportunity to hatch these and several other Pokémon that were originally discovered in the Johto Region in Pokémon Gold and Pokémon Silver video games. These are the first of more Pokémon coming to Pokémon GO over the next few months. Be sure to use the hashtag #PokemonGO on Twitter to share your experiences as you explore your local neighborhoods with family and friends, walk to hatch these Pokémon from Eggs, and register them to your collection this holiday season. We can't wait to see what Pokémon you've hatched!
We also have another special treat for you. Starting later today through December 29, 2016, 10:00 A.M. PST, you'll find limited edition Pikachu all over the world. These Pikachu will be wearing a festive hat to celebrate the season! Use the Pokémon GO AR camera when you encounter them in the wild to take their picture and share it with us using #HolidayPikachu.
Are you planning to try and hatch some of these new 'mon in the coming weeks?
Thanks to all that sent this in.

I have waited waaay to long to post this comment...
Gen 2 baby we win yeah!
/so sorry not so sorry
My son wants to play so badly, but its so cold outside. I keep playing this mostly because he has so much fun with it. I wish cell phone batteries (batteries in general) held up better in Ohio weather.
Ahhh finally the long awaited Gen2. If only I wouldn't freeze my *** off when I would go outside.
By spring I imagine Gen 2 is fully released. However, I would like to have that special Pickachu, especially with the new trading feature.
@KTT Now it's time that us Gen II fans reign! Yeah Gen II baby!
On a more serious note, it's a little disappointing that it's just Pichu and Togepi so far, but either way, I'm glad to see my favorite Pokemon generation get support! Can't wait until Totodile gets brought in!
Need to hatch eggs just to get into Gen 2 >.>"
Well I am disappointed in not getting the full Gen 2 at once, so I'll have to wait longer for my favorites like the starters, Steelix, etc. I'm sure they'll figure out a way to add those eventually.
In the mean time baby Pokemon will add a bit more excitement to hatching eggs. Hope I can hatch a Togepi!
Hmmm......my friends were just mentioning, but if you evolve Festive Pikachu with the hat into Raichu, does that mean he'll be a Festive Raichu with a Santa hat??????
Not full Gen 2 yet but at least it finally starts in GO too.
I bet they are the baby pokemons (cleffa, igglybuff, magby, elekid, etc.)
@KTT
GEN 2 MASTERRACE WE WIN BABY YEAH
Pity rooted phones aren't supported!
@KTT I missed that mention of other Pokemon! I'd assume it would mean the other baby Pokemon, but I'd love to see the starters included as well.
My internet connection is fine, but there's nothing to really do in Go where I live, and my university campus was the only place I could really get much done in Go. With the semester ending, I'm not sure that I'll be able to get much done.
It's disappointing that it's only baby pokemon. I was expecting all of gen 2 except for legendaries. Hopefully the festive pikachu is common, since I've not seen a single wild pikachu at all in the game except for the starter.
And how are you possibly able to get these of you don't have a PokeStop near you?!
It says "and select others," which probably means they'll be rolling out more Pokemon into eggs as time goes by. Then perhaps sometime in January or February they'll give Gen II a proper release.
I actually kind of like it this way. It gives everybody time to collect and stay up to date as they go.
Call me when Gen 3 rolls out and maybe I'll capture a Gardevoir for novelty's sake just because it's my favorite Pokemon.
@Darkwario1 Yes it's been confirmed Raichu keeps his cute santa hat!
Of course someone has already mocked Mr. "Gen 1 baby!". :^)
Oh, whatever. This is pretty cool, I guess. I like how they're going slow with the rollout of Gen 2. It'll prevent the servers from being overloaded. I imagine that they'll put all of the unevolved Gen 2 Pokemon into eggs, then into the wild, then put all the evolved Pokemon into the wild.
I've been seeing quite a lot of vocal discontent with this new update.
Partially rolling out a new generation of Pokémon feels like a bad way to handle things, and the chance to catch a cosmetic Pikachu is not as enticing as actual XP, Stardust or Candy bonuses and rewards.
That's a pretty good Christmas present from Niantic. Now if only I could play it while riding on the bus...
Got a Christmas Pikachu after finding this article! Now I gotta run around and see what the eggs hatch.
1st off, some mild spoilers, it looks like all the baby Pokemon have been confirmed to have been added as reported on Serebii, I won't list them all for those who want to be surprised: http://serebii.net/
So does that mean the regular ones who technically shouldn't have eggs like Pikachu are gonna get removed and replaced with the baby versions?
@LegendOfPokemon erm... how do you lay at all if you don't have pokestops?
So all 8 babies are reported to have been added? That's cool, pun not intended.
Some people (not necessarily here) need to chill out... -_-
Anyway, some people need to calm down, the other will be added in due time. This is good. Alas, anything Pokémon GO will always be followed by a flurry... I swear I'm doing this on accident.
Ahem, will always be followed by a shower of hate.
That Pikachu's pretty nice too. Hope we get another x2 rewards event next week or something.
EDIT: Yep. The hailstorm's (okay, I meant this one this time) is upon us. All the gen II baby's confirmed!
Woohoo! I was wondering how the baby mon would be handled.
Only problem is it's like 100 degrees outside. 😎
Once Gen 3 gets here I will play this game non-stop. With Gen 2 I will fire up the game every once and a while, but I'm reminded my biggest issue with the game: I have a ton of places to go to play the game but none are in walking distance.
Word from Reddit is the following baby Poke'mon are confirmed to be in the game right now: Pichu, Elekid, Magby Togepi, Cleffa and Igglybuff.
I kept playing everyday and racked up quite some Pokécoins by now. I might get some Incubators for this.
At level 19, I still don't have a normal Pikachu so I think the chances of me seeing the festive one are slim to none :/
I'm glad they're doing it like this, just need an Aerodactyl from a 10k egg, 4 ma hops for a machamp(obviously will get it eventually with buddy system) the regional Pokémon and legendarys so maybe I can complete gen 1 before all the new critters are running wild
Still looking for Ditto...
This makes sense. Togepi and pichu were some of the first gen two back in the day after all
....Of course they're egg only....
I walked 5 miles tonight and didnt see Festive Pikachu nor did any Gen 2 hatch from eggs. There's always tomorrow I guess.....
I caught a Holiday Pikachu tonight.
Are we gonna start seeing comments like the new costume trailers for Super Mario Maker? You know, but instead of "(insert character name) came before Daisy," it's "(insert Gen II PokéMon name) came before Mewtwo."
Anything new is a great addition to the game. Got my eyes peeled for the festive pikachu
Pokémon Sun & Moon > Pokémon GO.
Time to have to go out in the dead of night to find Hoothoot as Pidgey's nighttime counterparts.
@G-Boy
Yup.
Good to see them taking gen 2 slowly... I've been saying for some time that if they did add more Pokemon they would have to be careful about how they did it... dropping them all at once would have just ruined spawn rates, and could have easily killed the game in no time... although how they've adjusted egg probability is still a bit of a concern (I'm hoping they've simply removed some of the useless Pokemon from eggs, and replaced them with the new babies).
As soon as I saw about this yesterday I used all of the incubators I had left to clear out my eggs list so that I can start going for the new babies, and by chance got a 10km egg from a PokeStop when the egg I had already on the go hatched, so I'm hoping that's a new one.
Pikachu is a bit annoying so far though... seen two on the nearby list, one was too far away and the other refused to appear when I was right on top of it, but I'll spend more time looking over lunch today.
If I had to guess, I'd say that evolutions will be the next gen 2 addition (Slowking, Steelix, Scizor, Espeon, Umbreon, Bellossom, Politoed, Kingdra, Porygon 2, and Blissey)... maybe Miltank as well... but they'll probably wait until January before releasing those... spacing the additions out to get as much out of the hype for each one as possible.
Cleffa and Igglybuff 2km-egg.
Togepi and Pichu 5km-egg.
Elekid, Magby and Smoochum 10km-egg
Should've happened earlier but better late than never/
Gen 1 still wins ! Gen 1 is number 1 gen 2 is number 2! Yeah!
Got my holiday pikachu today! It's nice that you can identify it on the field, it's not a surprise like ditto. No gen 2 yet, but now I guess I need to focus on hatching more again. Fortunately gyms are now easier to take down and train so more churn there will help. My team is the area is a bit too strong though and they fill a bunch of gyms up to level 10 often. Nice if you get in on it. Not so nice if you don't.
Understandable the baby Pokémon only hatch from eggs but the fact that they're drip feeding the new Pokémon is irritating to say the least. Especially since none of the new additions can be caught so it's still pot luck if you find them. I have too many eggs to clear before the odds of getting an egg with a new Pokémon in will increase. And then I learn some are only in 10k eggs? A joke. Still, at least Pikachu spawns are more frequent now. Only just saw and caught my first today...
Caught this little imposter sneaking around my house. There can be only one lol
