With the start of another week we have the European Nintendo Download Update, outlining what goodies are on the way in a few days. The new arrivals are low in number but have some quality nonetheless, while there are a range of discounts to consider. Let's get to it.
Wii U eShop
Kick & Fennick (Abstraction Games, €10.49 / £9.44 until until 16th June, then €14.99 / £13.49) - A colourful action platformer, Kick & Fennick sees players take control of a young boy who rockets around levels using the recoil of his gun in search of a new energy core for his robot companion. It looks rather decent in footage, even if the Vita original prompted mixed reviews in 2015; we'll jump into the action for a review.
Wii U eShop Temporary Discounts
Art Of Balance (Shin'en Multimedia, €6.70 / £5.36 until 23rd June, normally €8.99 / £7.15)
Rock 'N Racing Off Road DX (EnjoyUp Games, €2.99 / £2.69 until 30th June, normally €5.99 / £5.39)
99Seconds (EnjoyUp Games, €1.49 / £1.34 until 30th June, normally €2.49 / £2.29)
Darts Up (EnjoyUp Games, €1.49 / £1.34 until 30th June, normally €2.49 / £2.29)
Jones on Fire (Joindots, €2.99 / £2.29 until 16th June, normally €5.99 / £4.59)
Queen's Garden (Joindots, €5.59 / £4.39 until 16th June, normally €6.99 / £5.49)
Epic Dumpster Bear (Log Games, €4.49 / £3.49 until 30th June, normally €6.49 / £4.99)
Puzzle Monkeys (Log Games, €1.49 / £1.49 until 30th June, normally €2.99 / £2.99)
New Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console
Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble (Nintendo, €5.59 / £4.99 until 9th June, then €7.99 / £7.19) — The final game of this series on the Super NES, now the Kremlings have managed to kidnap both DK and Diddy, leaving the rescuing down to Dixie and Kiddy. Aside from expanding the cast once again, this also threw in two-player team play and contests (we'll see whether that makes the cut on New 3DS); this didn't thrill us quite as much as previous entries but is still a great game, as explained in our Wii U Virtual Console Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble review.
3DS DLC
Fire Emblem Fates - Map 4: Ghostly Gold (Nintendo, €2.49 / £2.29 or part of map pack 1) - In Ghostly Gold, a good deed quickly turns hairy, but your generosity will be amply rewarded.
Fire Emblem Fates - Map 5: Museum Melee (Nintendo, €2.49 / £2.29 or part of map pack 1) - Museum Melee features an extraplanar collection of fine armaments. You can take a few of them home with you, provided you can beat the other challengers to the prize.
3DS eShop Temporary Discounts
Battleminer (Wobbly Tooth, €3.29 / £2.99 until 30th June, normally €4.99 / £4.49)
The Magic Hammer (Wobbly Tooth, €1.99 / £1.99 until 30th June, normally €2.99 / £2.99)

That's everything for the European Nintendo Download Update this week; let us know what you're planning to download in the poll and comments below.

The Wii U, plummeting to new lows on a weekly basis. Nothing again for me this week.
Just Fates DLC for me!
Months/years ago this kind of setup to me would've confirmed a Direct this week but I'm not sure as there's been similar weeks recently with virtually nothing.
Good to see virtual console getting discounted but only one game? Surprised they haven't released GameCube yet with the adaptor released with smash bros! Nintendo missing the boat again
Yay i'll save all my moneys this week.
Kick & Fennick looks great. Definitely getting that one.
Two words - Weak week!
That should be the most disappointing week in months. I don't get it why Nintendo can't at least manage to put one or two VC titles on the WiiU eShop in a week like that... Especially as the previous weeks weren't exactly exciting either.
@MussakkuLaden Probably letting NoA catch up as they're still far behind. Their drought was earlier in the Wii U lifecycle so now it's time for EU's drought I guess.
@Grumblevolcano Yep,same with me but this seems to be the trend now.Even half decent indie releases are few and far between.Never mind,E3 and it's solitary 9 month away game is upon is.
@OorWullie In a way it makes me thankful that Hyrule Warriors led me to buy but not play a fair few 2014-current Wii U games. Bayonetta 1+2, Kirby and the Rainbow Paintbrush, XCX, Pokken and Star Fox Guard are a few examples.
YookaLaylee might actually be the last games I'll buy for Wii U. I'll buy Zelda for NX.
Atlas kinda stole the show last week for me with those permanent discounts. Nothing there this week at all, compared....
@Grumblevolcano I shouldn't really complain as I have catching up to do too,Hyrule Warriors being one of them along with Captain Toad,W101,TP HD and LEGO City.I already have XCX,got about 20 hours in and never went back to it but I will... one day.I've also got Bayonetta 1,Dues Ex,WWHD and a couple of others in my backlog. So like you,I'll look at it from a positive perspective,I can play the games I've already spent money on.
DKC 3 all the way, while not the strongest entry in the series it's still great platformer that stood the test of time.
Ashley is from the WarioWare series?
Are Nintendo trying to help Sony and Microsoft with their half-term offers? I can understand a lack of new content, but when it's openly acknowledged that Nintendo are winding down the Wii U there's no excuse for keeping 4-year-old games at £50. Especially when you can get games that are just as good (or arguably in some cases, better) on other formats for a fraction of the price.
Incredibly weak week for both 3DS and Wii U.
Kick & Fennick is ok, but way too late coming to Wii U. Got it already last year through Sony's PS+ rental service that lets you pay for renting games, I wish they would change that so you could actually own the games.
Omg, I've been waiting for so long... rock n road, 99 seconds, darts up, they're all finally on discount!
Nothing for me this week, but I'll be sure to check out the reviews of Kick & Fennick
An all time low for both Wii U & 3DS.
@Smokingspoon hahaha same here.
@khululy The collectables in that game were so pretty, I just wanted to put them in my pockets! Not the best, but I thought Dkc3 was under appreciated.
Wow, that time of the week already? I'll just go back to bed then.
Absolutely nothing.
I still don't get why we have to pay a third time for the same ROMs from the same user account.
Sigh. Guess it saves me money and gives me more time to work on my games backlog...
Omg. So excited darts up is on sale was waiting forever
Sarcasm
I'll probably get the Fire Emblem DLC eventually, but can't this week.
@OorWullie @Grumblevolcano
You guys have a great selection of titles in your backlog there. I'm pretty jealous
I've got the second half of project zero to play when it's not dark and creepy outside
(hard to find time for a game that terrifies you!) And I've not even started on xcx yet and that's supost to be massive! Otherwise I've never played splinter cell blacklist that I got very cheap ages ago and I'll get starfox for my birthday in a couple of weeks. After that I guess we're relying on the e shop gems that emerge....
@ULTRA-64 From what I've heard, properly completing XCX takes 400+ hours.
@supermario4ever : Yes. Ashley already has a theme in the eShop and she has had her own range of badges in Nintendo Badge Arcade (oddly, the WarioWare brand itself doesn't yet have a series of badges, at least in Europe).
I'm hoping that this is a sign of a possible Ashley spin-off game, or better yet, a new WarioWare game. Wario has been completely neglected on 3DS. We had two amazing WarioWare games on DS and an absolutely brilliant one on Wii…
Game & Wario was okay as a launch-era tech demo, but a MotionPlus WarioWare game is LONG overdue, and sadly, I doubt there is even one in the works considering how big a flop the Wii U has been. =( That doesn't explain why there hasn't been a new WarioWare or Wario Land game on 3DS though.
Glad to see the initial discount for Donkey Kong Country 3 and not a Buy One Get One half price like the initial batch of games. This is the only DKC I don't already have on the Wii U VC so I might take advantage of that first week discount. I hope this will be the case with all future 3DS Snes vc titles...
I dunno if having nothing this week might be a good indicative, because there was a rumor that Nintendo is going to have a Direct Mini this Thursday and the contents were supposedly leaked. But if it is true, even though it's there's not much content in it, i'm pretty sure a lot of people are going to be happy if 1 of those titles in the leak turn out to be true.
@BensonUii Those excuses are not valid to me. Moreover, on Xbox and PS there is cross-buy among consoles.
@Grumblevolcano @ULTRA-64 I know this is not a popular opinion, but I still have to beat Xenoblade Chronicles (the main quest and most important side quests) and it's being the most boring gaming experience in my whole life. That's why I did not buy Xenoblade Chronicles X.
On the other hand, Maiden of Black Water is wonderful and makes the best use of the GamePad this far. Tip: Only look at the GamePad when battling ghosts (deactivate map display on the GamePad).
@VanillaLake Wow, that's like the exact opposite to me. I'm really having a good time with Xenoblade Chronicles, i really liked X so i wanted to play the original.
@Blester And I respect that, of course. There are some things I liked about Xenoblade Chronicles though. Gems crafting became fun eventually (once you understand how it works), the characters are different from each other and some of their stories are really interesting, like Fiora's (who physically looks exactly like Britney Spears), cutscenes are great for the most part and some songs are good. However, battle system is a bit messy, AI is a bit random and unfair, side quests are extremely boring and demanding and the game pace is too slow. Those are important flaws for such a huge game, and water down the whole experience.
@MadAussieBloke I'm not defending it, rather getting the most out of a terrible situation.
@BensonUii Do not most people say that Xenoblade Chronicles X is worse than Xenoblade Chronicles? Anyway, I'm busy right now with Master Chief Collection and Rare Replay (Xbox One) and Uncharted The Nathan Drake Collection (PS4).
The last game I've played on Wii U was Twilight Princess (HD) which is, in my opinion, the best Zelda game ever made.
@Grumblevolcano do you have a xbox one or ps4? This drought must be terrible for you. There are the vc games you can get into also.
@super08mario Being without a PS or Xbox these days is terrible.
@VanillaLake yea. If you're a Nintendo fanatic then most likely you have played all of the games you wanted to already. At least I know I'm getting monster hunter soon.
@super08mario Of course I have an XB1, it's just nice to have the balance between Microsoft and Nintendo rather than just Microsoft.
@Grumblevolcano @MadAussieBloke
Yeah to stay a regular on here really does require you to polish a few turds eh!?!
Lest bit of genuine, uncontested good news I remember on here was........this is hard.......metroid trilogy 're-release' !?!
Still waiting for The Pinball Arcade or Woah Dave or even that light arcade would be nice.
@ULTRA-64 I'd say probably NWC and Smash Direct on the Sunday before E3 2015. The release of Roy, Ryu, Lucas, Dream Land 64, Suzaku Castle and Earthbound Beginnings combined with the announcement of Peach's Castle 64, Hyrule Castle 64 and tourneys coming soon in addition to the atmosphere of the overall NWC event got people so hyped that they thought E3 2015 would be at least as good as E3 2014.
@BensonUii Funnily, I prefer the smaller New 3DS (and my hands are not small). There are some great games on 3DS, a few of them I haven't played yet, I'll get Fire Emblem Fates once the whole bundle price is reduced, right now it's too expensive to get the whole experience.
@super08mario Yes, the only Nintendo game that I want and I haven't purchased is Fire Emblem Fates. On Wii U no good games for a long time (the last one is a GameCube remaster).
I'm just wondering when will Paper Mario Colour Splash be released? April 2017 (like new Zelda)?
For 3DS owners, Ace Attorney 6: Spirit of Justice is out on 30th September. Thanks, Capcom.
EDIT: typo correction.
@VanillaLake April 2016 has already passed
Anyway I think August/September 2016.
@Grumblevolcano Oh I mean April 2017 LOL
@VanillaLake Someone from Nintendo goes back in time to tell past Nintendo to delay Star Fox Zero another ~6 months and release Color Splash in April 2016
@Grumblevolcano Yeah that's probably when it peaked in term of 'feel good' factor, your right!
That whole E3 debacle was a real turning point overall. Hell, I got a ps3 after that! I'd never owned a non Nintendo console before o_0
Kick and Fenick, is a decent game, but gets very tough very quickly, I've still not got to the end on the Vita.
Backlog week ftw!
@Grumblevolcano If that means that Star Fox Zero could have been improved...
So, is Paper Mario Colour Splash the only Wii U (if it's not pushed back for a dual release like the new Zelda) game for almost one year?
Still awaiting the arrival of Super Castlevania 4 on the 3DS virtual console. I hope they won't make us wait too long for more awesome Snes games (on 3ds).
This has to be the longest awkward silence from Nintendo in their history, there's just...... nothing..
@VanillaLake Yeah, 9 months to be more precise (Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE in late June to Zelda U in March 2017 at the earliest).
I'm really getting bored with the Wii U games atm. Still waiting for GameCube releases on the VC.
Hopefully the NX will be out soon.
@Luffymcduck It's still not confirmed that Zelda NX will be the same as Zelda U, though it probably will be, you can never be 100% sure with Nintendo.
I'm not buying anything else. It would be just a waste of money since NX is kinda announced and rumors are going out of a new handheld.
If only digital purchase would carry over.
@PAppleyard Uh...the NX has a confirmed release date of March 2017 which is why it's so baffling that Nintendo essentially abandoned Wii U during the holiday season last year over 15 months before the launch of the NX...
@Mayoo Uh...dude most of the best games for the 3DS are releasing later this year. And usually most of the best games for any video game system release at the tail-end of the system's life-cycle. The Wii and Wii U are an exception not the norm, besides the best Wii U indie titles are still on the horizon.
@Neko_Ichigofan I agree with you, and yet I still won't buy any. At least not for now. I loved all games I bought but I just don't feel they are worth their price at this time. That's me though. Personal preferences
@Neko_Ichigofan I know this sounds ridiculous (I doubt the idea myself) but maybe Nintendo's realized that there's not much point in buying a Nintendo console until late into its first year at the earliest nowadays (been that way since SNES I think) and so they're abandoning Wii U a year earlier than usual to make sure that's not the case.
I can properly finish the Donkey Kong Country trilogy for New 3DS now!
If anyone doesn't have Art of Balance yet, it's a must-buy!
It's already fun in the singleplayer campaign, where you have to clear 8 worlds. And this game is truly amazing in multiplayer (local or online), me and my friends had a lot of fun with it!
Y'know, I actually feel that Country 3 was the best Donkey Kong game. I really dig the more open overworld with it's secret minigames and letting you choose what order you do some of the worlds in, and the amount of variety in the levels is really impressive. Does mean it's a bit more hit & miss than Country 2 since it's constantly trying new stuff that may or may not work (the last level was atrocious), but overall I still found Country 3 more enjoyable.
Nothing for me this week, I have two birthdays to think about and I already downloaded DKC3 awhile back.
@PocketPocket
Me too!
@PocketPocket Although DKC2 is my favourite one, DKC3 is an awesome game with added features and environments, and the first game is still a masterpiece, as classic as it is. The three are still great games and have aged very well. Being late in SNES lifespan did not help DKC3, as people were obsessed with 3D visuals at the moment (Super Mario 64).
Maybe Kick & Fenwick but not alot this week.
"The new arrivals are low in number but have some quality nonetheless, while there are a range of discounts to consider."
hahaha .. looking at the offer and the text, this sounds like these commercial presentations on tv trying to sell me pans and when i call now, i will also get some free knife along with it = you dont believe yourself what you are writing...awful week
Wow really
I just want to recommend Parascientific escape cruise in distant seas. Its a pretty decent point and click mystery game with some surprisinglingly decent artwork. I had fun with the game and got stuck in a couple places. I would rate the game a 6 in the much needed point and click genre. Have fun. At 3 bucks or so a steal
@readyletsgo almost bought them all, just missing Persona Q, and for wii U I'm buying Xenoblade Chronicles, maybe Pandora's tower in a fortnight.
