The Japanese Media Create chart results are out, and this week isn't short of new releases - notably, however, some titles that are major names in the West have only made a modest impression in Japan.
Kirby: Planet Robobot is still the best-placed game on Nintendo hardware, showing solid momentum in second place and having passed a quarter of a million physical retail sales in the country. Yo-kai Sangokushi is next for 3DS in 4th, though its sales are in four figures, as they are for all but the top two games. Big-hitters in the West such as Doom have had a modest launch in Japan, while My Hero Academia: Battle For All on 3DS could only manage 9th place in its first week. The top 20 is below, with lifetime sales in brackets.
- [PS4] Uncharted 4: A Thief's End (SIE, 05/10/16) – 21,155 (149,879)
- [3DS] Kirby: Planet Robobot (Nintendo, 04/29/16) – 19,383 (268,334)
- [PS4] Homefront: The Revolution (Spike Chunsoft, 05/19/16) – 9,422 (New)
- [3DS] Yo-kai Sangokushi (Level-5, 04/02/16) – 8,913 (518,492)
- [PSV] Kenka Bancho Otome (Spike Chunsoft, 05/19/16) – 8,534 (New)
- [PSV] Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball 2016 (Konami, 04/29/16) – 6,763 (126,073)
- [PS4] Doom (Bethesda Softworks, 05/19/16) – 6,164 (New)
- [PS4] Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball 2016 (Konami, 04/29/16) – 6,057 (140,448)
- [3DS] My Hero Academia: Battle For All (05/19/16) – 5,607 (New)
- [PSV] Minecraft: PlayStation Vita Edition (SIE, 03/19/15) – 5,564 (774,096)
- [PS4] Battleborn (2K Games, 05/19/16) – 5,145 (New)
- [Wii U] Splatoon (Nintendo, 05/28/15) – 5,038 (1,367,268)
- [Wii U] Super Mario Maker (Nintendo, 09/10/15) – 4,088 (878,493)
- [3DS] Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3 (Square Enix, 03/24/16) – 4,047 (596,369)
- [PS3] Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball 2016 (Konami, 04/29/16) – 3,952 (80,392)
- [PSV] Period Cube: Torikago no Amadeus (Idea Factory, 05/19/16) – 3,850 (New)
- [Wii U] Star Fox Zero / Star Fox Guard Double Pack (Nintendo, 04/21/16) – 3,735 (36,177)
- [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf Happy Price Selection (Nintendo, 03/17/16) – 2,373 (47,974)
- [3DS] Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games (Nintendo, 02/18/16) – 2,319 (161,048)
- [PS4] Dying Light: The Following (Warner Bros., 04/21/16) – 2,118 (15,336)
The hardware scene shows decline for the most part, with the New 3DS LL (XL) still in second between the PS4 and Vita. The Wii U managed to eke out some extra sales, though its sales are still poor; the details are below with last week's sales in brackets.
- PlayStation 4 – 18,430 (23,239)
- New 3DS LL – 12,051 (13,623)
- PlayStation Vita – 10,954 (12,299)
- Wii U – 4,109 (3,896)
- New 3DS – 2,552 (3,021)
- PlayStation 3 – 1,001 (997)
- 3DS – 700 (823)
- 3DS LL – 103 (128)
- Xbox One – 72 (115)
This week's results do demonstrate how sales trends differ in Japan - titles that have been a major success in the West are struggling to make an impact. For Kirby there's certainly positive momentum, with the platformer arriving in Europe and North America on 10th June.

Kirby.....man, that guys packs a Pluff doesn't he?
He now gets known to be one of the only known platform games on the 3DS besides Mario! Awesome!
Is Wii U stock still an issue in Japan? Nearly every Wii U owner in Japan must have Splatoon by now, but it keeps selling.
Has Wii U had a decent price cut in Japan yet? With TMS#FE already out in Japan all they have let for the next 10 months is Paper Mario Color Splash. Well if it releases in 2016. They should seriously lower the Wii U price while it still has a few selling titles. Well if they have any left to sell. It's still $299 in the US, which rarely boogles the mind at this point w/ it's extremely limited upcoming game line-up. It launched at $299 3 1/2 years ago, now that ain't right.
Given how popular Boku No Hero Academia is in Japan (the manga has had several colour covers already and was always placed highly whenever I checked the Shounen Jump rankings), I'm rather surprised My Hero Academia: Battle For All is ranked only at 9th. I was expecting it to do a lot better than that.
While it is sad to see the Wii U not doing too well in a country where it usually at least does decently, I am happy to continue seeing the dominance of Kirby. May our small pink overlord continue living prosperously.
@rjejr No there's no stock issue. Golden Week a few weeks ago dismissed that urban legend. There's been no price cut in Japan nor anywhere else. It's not reasonable to charge so much given its selling miserably and the competition are only €50 more expensive, if even that. In fact some bundles are cheaper than Wii U. Do something, anything Nintendo.
Is Splatoon Wii U's biggest selling Japanese game? And it's been in the charts an awful long time.
Microsoft must be vexed. Sales of XB1 are down 50%.
It is in a week like this that I can see how far is my taste in gaming from japanese people...
How a sh##ty game like Homefront had a strongest launch than Doom is out of my cognitive abilities...
@SLIGEACH_EIRE "nor anywhere else"
Well officially, but its my understanding that the EU and UK price things a bit differently than in the US, so Wii U can be had generally less than MSRP over there. Plus VAT and all of that of course. So maybe Japan is the same way?
I was actually a bit happy when Nitneod announced the Splat Smash bundle for $279 Black Friday. 2 newer games at a finally lower price. And the box art was nice as well. $249 BF and then $279 the rest of the time I thought could help pick up sales a bit and get more people talking about those 2 games. But they must have made only a few thousand bundles b/c it was back to MK8 real quick. At $299. In the "deluxe" bundle, but they don't even have the 'digital DELUXE promotion" anymore, so you can't make back the 10% on digital purchases, making the $299 price even worse. I think I had $20 back, so that helped defray the cost.
Maybe not a bargain at $249 w/ those 2 games, but much fairer than $299 w/ MK8, which is 2 years old now. Anybody wanting MK8 and a $299 Wii U would have done so at least 18 months ago when in launched in September ahead of holiday 2014. It really makes my head explode, and not in a good way.

@BensonUii Thanks. I hadn't read about it either, but I thought maybe it was just a given at this point that Wii U were hard to find. And really, why even bother to make a console you, and nobody else, is making any games for? Zelda U will be on NX, so there goes that game as well.
@rjejr Here in Ireland the best price for the MK8/Splatoon bundle is €340. The MK8 bundle is €367. Go figure. You can buy cheaper XB1 bundles with games and PS4 game bundles for not much more. It's almost like an arrogance that they think they can sell a dead console with practically no remaining future games at the same price as consoles that have a future and are much more powerful.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE same in Switzerland. 299 for a bundle pack. Also here, you can get a cheaper XBox one, and ps4 bundle is just 50 more expensive
@arnoldlayne83 @SLIGEACH_EIRE Ouch. I think X1 is still usually $349 in the US, but seemingly every week it's either on sale for $299 - when Quantum Break released a few weeks ago - or it's $350 w/ a store branded $50 gift card. I do think I saw Wii U w/ MK8 on sale for $279 recently, but that's not exactly screaming "buy me" at this point. Maybe E3. It can't be all about Zelda U, it just can't be.
Terrible hardware sales all around. Software sales are pretty poor as well, though Kirby has some decent legs.
@rjejr if i was Nintendo now, I would realize that is too late and I would just care to empty my stock... So 199€ or $ all over the place, hoping that this will boost also software sales. Zelda or not Zelda, it is clear that WiiU is over, and the ongoing rumours about NX plus the software draught ain't gonna move consoles anymore
Is there a reason Splatoon & Mario Maker are back-to-back on the charts nearly every week? I know they don't sell in a two-pack but it sure seems that way, as they're always so close in sales.
I wish we would get Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball 2016. I liked the Wii one.
@Cakes There is a Splatoon + Super Mario Maker Wii U hardware bundle in Japan.
I sadly think Kirby may overtake Uncharted next week.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
Pretty much the same in the UK. In a weird kinda way it makes me glad that the damn console is doing so badly in Britain.
At least in this case we can claim boldly that we are not mugs.
Seriously, right now I wont pay £100 for a Wii U or maybe £150 if bundled with something awesome. Just my 2 cents.
@Grumblevolcano "Sadly"? What did you mean by that?
@Freeon-Leon To me these Japan charts are more interesting to see results when Western developers are on top. (In a similar way, UK charts are more interesting when Nintendo games are on top)
