Super Mario Maker just keeps on giving. With the next update planned for 9th March, even more tools and bits will be added to the mix, providing savvy creators all the more opportunities to force players through the products of their gorgeously twisted little minds.
Right next to when the update is scheduled to arrive, Nintendo has released a short video that dives a little further into the updates revealed in the latest Nintendo Direct. Looks like it might be wise for Mario to invest in a keyring.
So what do you think? Have any level ideas brewing in your head?

The trail of keys is giving me a strong Yoshi's Island vibe. I forsee a lot of Yoshi amiibo levels involving keys.
The keys will help out all the puzzle level ideas I got.
One step closer to slopes I can just feel it😀...NX launches slopes are now available 🙃
My kids are so mad at me, they've been waiting for this and I made haircut appointments for 4:30 and 5:00 tomorrow afternoon. Mine is at 2:00 while they're at school, so at least they are spared sitting there for that.
Good update. Glad the keys aren't for making levels in SSB, it would have been 75c for either version, $1.15 for both.
I foresee some crazy Inception style levels in the future. I like the idea of a chain of rooms, where solving a puzzle gets you a key you need to find the keyhole for. And chaining that concept one after another. Say, after a long sprint with Boos, Big Boos and a ridiculous amount of fire.
A burning, churning Ghost House!
I would like to see Nintendo give gravity effects to the tool set.
Like the ability to turn a small room end over end or running along the ceiling.
Mario needs more wacky!
All I need now is slopes, new level themes and editable water/lava, I should be good then, anything else is extra bonus's, although I would like it if you can make doors enter sub areas.
This is such a great game. I need to get back into it and do something creative. I would like unlimited items, however.
So to add to the news from the direct. You can have up to 8 keys per level. You can have multiple keys at the same time. Maximum of 5 key coins per level. Advanced research on your own levels: Where the people die and see their comments.
And did they already say there was 12 new amiibo costumes? I don't remember if they gave us a set number.
But what time tomorrow? Based on previous updates it'll be the afternoon...
It's a very minor detail, but I really like how the text shakes with the hand whenever it says "Shake a [object]".
It's the little things.
Finally, mandatory boss fights.
@LordGeovanni
So, the vid showed a single red coin giving one key, but then showed 5 red coins still only giving one key.
Is it one key per coin? So 5 coins = 5 keys? Or is it like where you have to collect all the red coins in an area to get one key?
So all that I need now is new level themes and pools of water. Gotta say these updates are small but huge at the same time.
and slopes but I can live without those.
@JaxonH
No, it looks like there are X coins per level ( where X is a number 1-5) and collecting them all gives a key.
The other keys seem to have to be obtained other ways.
@JaxonH What @LordGeovanni said.
@LordGeovanni
Ok, and just to clarify, is that per level, or per sub-level? Could I place 2 coins in main level and other 3 in a sub-level?
@JaxonH
Video says in both, so 5 total between both. One key though.
The skewers and keys I will mostly be using
Super Expert Difficulty. My body is ready? D:
Have a week off coming in a bit. Sure would be nice to work on a couple levels, and these updates fall right in line with things I've wanted to do. sigh So many distractions from inventing fun distractions, though.
OK so are we getting Shovel Knight?
Major Key Alert
"Have any level ideas brewing in your head?"
My ear-to-ear smile as I heard about these news in the Direct was kind of a dead giveaway, but then again no one could see it on NintendoLife so yeah, I was sporting an ear-to-ear smile. Skewers aside, both Red Coins (or "Pink" Coins, whatever) and Keys give makers a lot more freedom. Also, mandatory bosses! With keys and the variety of enemy behavior spread across the various Mario enemies, I wouldn't rule out boss fight remakes in my Bandicoot Lands series of game levels. In case you're curious, I have uploaded a bunch of such levels in the past, check 'em out: https://supermariomakerbookmark.nintendo.net/profile/AlexSora89
@Detective_TeeJay
Indeed. Marching Milde's Fort, much?
@bezerker99
Surely it will take a lot of
trashahem, "rewarding" difficult levels out of Expert mode.Update is now out!
@Undead_terror Yes! Now I'll be able to make a level as soon as I finish work!
Still need colour pipes.
we need jungle with it being poison below like castle's, snow levels and penguins, also we need desert, and mountain area.
These are simple items, but should allow a lot of creativity and new ideas. I'll be sure to try them out.
I'm liking all the new additions in this update.
@edgedino I don't think we will be seeing any new levels for Super Mario Maker unfortunately as that would require big updates. Maybe in the next incarnation of the series for the NX they will have more.
But the question is... Do those keys work as blades?
@AlexSora89 You read my mind.
I played the newest Event Course this morning and unlocked some other unknown character. I had to get to work so that's all I had time for. Haven't tried Super Expert difficulty yet. I'm curious as to just how must BS factor will be in these new levels.
@bezerker99 I expect lots of BS from Super Expert mode! XD
Now stages can get crazy complex, yet really fun! Although, I wish that there was one more update...
Not slopes... give that one more time...
Speaker blocks. That way, you don't have to use precious real estate on your stage to explain something.
But then again... You could post Miiverse messages on your own stage... couldn't you?
@KoopaTheGamer
You're making my NL username blush, you. <3
@bezerker99
Lots of bulls emptying their bowels, surely. I'll steer clear of Super Expert mode for a while.
At least (I don't think) Super Expert levels unlock any new costumes. So, it really is just for giggles then.
