As you're likely already aware, the My Nintendo loyalty programme is now live, and it's all rather exciting. It's possible to pick up some early Platinum Points right off the bat, and Europeans can also grab their copy of Flipnote Studio 3D. Just head to the official website and login with your Nintendo Account.
An interesting detail is in the pricing of rewards and those all important Gold Points - these are earned through buying games on the Wii U or 3DS eShop. Some of the rewards are a little 'cheaper' than in Japan, and the key details are the brackets below that earn you these Gold Points; we've included the UK and US prices.
- $5 to $9.99 / £4.50 to £8.99 = 10 Gold Coins
- $10 to $19.99 / £9 to £17.99 = 20 Gold Coins
- $20 to $29.99 / £18 to £24.99 = 30 Gold Coins
- $30 to $39.99 / £25 to £29.99 = 40 Gold Coins
- $40 to $49.99 / £30 to £34.99 = 50 Gold Coins
- $50 to $59.99 / £35 to £39.99 = 60 Gold Coins
- $60 to $69.99 / £40 to £49.99 = 70 Gold Coins
- $70 or more / £50 or more = 80 Gold Coins
Quite how we're supposed to hit the very highest bracket is a mystery, as the eShop processes individual purchases - presumably some pricey and special downloads with higher prices are in our future.
We'll be looking at the economy of My Nintendo later today, but in the meantime let us know what you think of the Gold Point system.

Since I barely buy retail games in the eShop, I don't think I will be using the points system a lot.
Well, If its including tax its easy for some people to spend 70+ $ on one game. Especially since the canadian dollar has been so cuss recently and taxes here are crazy. A 59.99$ in the US costs 69.99$ Here
I feel a little cheated as I could have earned points by holding out on purchasing a few games.
Same for me, bought 3 games on the eShop recently and I get nothing for it
Got it. I do love how it still says "© 2013 Nintendo" in Flipnote Studio 3D.
It's pretty lame that they don't factor in how much you spent since ClibNingendo was killed. I'd have a good bit of gold coins for that.
@Flanktwo : Whoa. That's a LOT of spilt milk.
The Nintendo Network Premium seems a bit of a better deal, as it all added up from small to big purchases to get £5 credit. With this a game on sale could net you no coins whatsoever.
i hit the highest bracket when i bought the smash dlc. you tick the boxes and it all gets charged once but those don't count to gold coins.
The gold totals are based on the RRP, so if a item has a discount/sale the gold points doesn't go down. Not sure if this is on purpose or not.
I've upgraded my Wii copy of Lylat Wars to the Wii U Star Fox 64 for £1.79 and got the 10 Gold Points.
Looking at Virtue's Last Reward page, it is currently on sale for £9.99 but you will get the 30 gold points based on it's £19.99 RRP.

@Flanktwo don't suppose there's a petition to make it all retroactive out there somewhere.
I'm still holding out for rewards for physical purchases. I don't spend much on the eShop. The odd VC game or something isn't going to get me many points.
@Bluecup hope that's not a glitch! if it is, i hope they spot it and patch it about as fast as they add gamecube titles to the eshop!
@GammaPhonic I expect Nintendo will introduce some kind of system for physical purchases when the NX launches. Or I hope they do as that is how I purchase my games.
@Pluto14 your loss
@EllenJMiller I just bought Ace Attorney Trilogy for 17,99, but I still got 30 coins, because it's normal price was 29,99. So you still get the amount of coins you would normally get even if there is a sale.
FINALLY! I can buy Hyrule Warriors Legends now! ...But I gotta do it after I finish my shift. Still, I'm hyped to go home!
I think this will cement a shift from retail to digital for me, especially with the Nintendo situation in Brazil pushing prices way up for retail titles here. So far, so good.
@sillygostly Well or you could have holded out on buying games for a couple of years and buy them all now...
@GammaPhonic not gonna happen, buddy...
By the way, in term of points 8 GBA games at $8 ($64) are like a single game at $70...
The gold coin prices on some of the rewards are kind of steep. 70 gold coins for Super Punch Out? Yeah, I'll pass on that and hoard them instead.
@allav866 There is a way you can purchase it via Nintendo UK's actual website now...
You must be logged into your Nintendo Account though
https://www.nintendo.co.uk/Games/Nintendo-3DS/Hyrule-Warriors-Legends-1025970.html
It gives you a button saying Download Version: Proceed To Purchase from a desktop computer browser and displays the price as £34.99. (50 Gold Points can be earned)
It's not that hard to hit that here in Canada. Pokken Tournament is $70 here.
Personally I don't think I am going to get much use out of the MyNintendo Points, but I really don't mind at all...
I have always been one for physical items as I love to have a box and stuff. I especially love special editions and limited editions and have been known to occasionally purchase two of specific limited editions that I am interested in.
For example, I have got two Star Fox Zero: First Print Editions on pre-order right now.
@Alundra-1998 Out of curiosity, it now tells me that I already own the games I bought through the eShop (e.g. Super Mario Bros. 3), is the device-independent account-tied purchase system finally in force?
@Mister_Wu I literally have no idea...
I like physical games, so I'm not expecting to get many gold coins.
Ok, broader question to everyone with a 3DS: since the Super Mario Bros. 3 page now shows me that I have bought the game (I did on the Wii U eShop), can someone confirm that now you just have to buy a cross-platform game (e.g. Virtual Console titles) once and then it shows as if you have bought it also for 3DS?
Just noticed Donkey Kong Country Returns is a downloadable reward available for 230 gold coins. Just checked Nintendo's site to be sure, but that game is not available to purchase in NA.
@Mister_Wu Unfortunately I don't think so, I had a look at Earthbound (which I have on the Wii U) and it still gave me the option to buy the NN3DS version at full price.
I'm so glad that I held of buying a couple of games from the eShop for the past few weeks, already started accruing those Gold Coins!
@LandOfZeldtir On the Nintendo site or on the console's eShop?
@Mister_Wu On the site, haven't had a chance to look at the eShop yet!
I was just registering and I'm pretty sure its a bit buggy. I collected the same reward twice. Got 240 platinum points in 3 minutes...
I've been planning on buying Wind Waker and I'll buy it on the eShop now, haha
Yep, just got the Donkey Kong theme and got 40 points in the bank to spend later lol
The scheme means you could spend dozens on things like Nintendo Badge Arcade, but never earn a single gold coin because the maximum purchase is £3.60 for 20 plays.
That's nasty. They aren't rewarding your micro-transactions.
The highest bracket is actually a thing in Australia, some retail titles (generally 3rd party ones) release at $89.95 on the eShop instead of the standard $79.95. Pokken Tournament is a very recent example of this.
Considering that the only My Nintendo reward that I'm interested in is Mario 64, which is a whopping 90 gold coins, I don't see myself getting it. I rarely buy retail games digitally, and most of my eshop purchases are VC games. Also, apparently you can't hoard coins for too long?
Aw sheesh, I just spent close to 200€ on various games for the Wii U and 3DS this past weekend. Should have waited a week.
So... since we can't buy more than one game a time, how will some of us ever reach the higest pirce point for the 80 coins? I don't think there is a single game in the eshop that costs that much for me.
Hopefully this will get better over time.
@RCMADIAX Not to mention all of the NES library, the same one Nintendo keeps pushing us to rebuy over and over, gets you nothing in Coins.
Even if its just 1 coin Nintendo, give us something for the cheap games and DLC for that matter. Bit of a cheek you offer all of the Awakening DLC for half price but none of it counts towards coins.
I'll stick to the platinum points anyway. I never buy any retail title digitally, except when they have a 50-70% discount.
There's a section on the site to add points via a code. It might be wrong to assume but we could get these by from buying the games directly with Nintendo's online stores.
I used some of my platinum coins to grab the Donkey Kong My Nintendo theme...
Wow...now I see why they didn't put it in the actual theme shop, it actually hurts your eyes to look at it.
What about game like Fatal Frame Maiden of Black Water where to buy the whole game it's listed as "dlc" Will it count toward this?
@Pluto14 yeah, I'm the same way.
It would have really been awesome if these star coins could be used for DLC....not that I have issues with buying them but its just that I can't add funds often.
@ROBLOGNICK Reading more into it, the code input section is for if you purchase a download code from a retail store.
That's a nice way for those who may not believe in online shopping (or unfortunate kids who's parents are still paranoid about online shopping).
This is a good way to push more folks towards digital purchases without making the retailers angry.
Still, I dont see why they couldnt throw the codes in the boxes of physical games like they used to, too.
It seems that I'll be 60-100 gold coins richer but the end of today.
Sux that tax is not included since with my State's sales tax I could of jump to the next bracket and get 10 extra coins ($59.99 to around $65 after tax).
There should be some kind of bonus for those who bought games between the both programmes... The system knows our activities and it's easy to do. Not to mention those who never had any loyality program and all those stars/coins/whatever ended in trash, ended as a collector's item or was sold on Ebay/Amazon to countries that could use it.
Welp I only buy non retail games on the eshop like indies etc so won't be expecting much gold.
So no love for physical game purchase like old club nintendo?
Seems that Canadian prices are effected, got legends which was $56 bucks total, only got 40 coins, oh well...
I don't see why they couldn't have just awarded one gold coin per dollar spent. Super annoying that I buy retail games physical and most of the games I buy on the eShop are only like $5 and won't reach the $7 (realistically $7.99) threshold to qualify for any gold coins.
@iphys Others will find it useful and not annoying like you
pretty bad system - they should give a point for every dollar we spend. I am not wasting any money on this rubbish system
@iphys
Exactly - it just shows how greedy nintendo actually is - they dont really want to reward you - they want get every possible dollar out of you
They really need to implement the shopping cart functionality to 3DS, Wii U and web eShops.
Otherwise that point reward range is just crazy.
They already have a wishlist, so why not also a shopping cart for full experience.
Also, in the left side menu you can see the option "Redeem a point card" which means what was mentioned in Nintendo's slides presentation a few months ago. The physical game rewards will come in the future. I'd hope that it's already in place by the time Star Fox Zero arrives. Most likely the old Club Nintendo points cards will be replaced by My Nintendo cards.
Too bad it's only digital downloads. I basically never buy digital copies of games.
It seems that it counts games that are on sale but normally sold for an amount that jives with these rewards. I noticed that SEGA 3D Classics are on sale for $3.99, so I picked up both Streets of Rage and Gunstar Heroes. They both counted to give me 10 Gold Points each.
The real rewards seem to be behind platinum coins so far, I suspect gold coin rewards will typically be too overpriced to really consider seriously. Seriously, those 15% and 30% discounts are straight-up insulting. Still, I do look forward to getting a copy of "Warioware: Touched!" for my 1000 platinum coins. That's a much more appetizing deal.
can you guys mention the 6 month timespan for gold coins? I feel it's pretty important seeing as how 6 months is ridiculous when club nintendo points lasted 2 years.
I think it's ridiculous that purchasing physical copies gets us absolutely nothing at all! I am a huge Nintendo Collector from NES thru the current console Wii U and everything in between. I enjoy looking at my physical collection, organizing, alphabatizing, cleaning, etc. And spend a lot of money on Nintendo Memorabilia. I feel like we are being forced in a sense to make digital purchases because now there are more benefits to do so. I will continue to purchase physical copies and I guess suffer the consequences....not cool Nintendo...not cool.
This doesn't really make sense, if i do two 20$ purchases i get more than i would for a 40$ purchase, which is 1. stupid because shouldnt they want us to pay more to get more coins? and 2. because if i want a 40$ game i have to buy a 5$ game to get those last 10 coins that i would get if i bought 2 20$ games
