Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition is rightly held in high regard by a number of series fans; this writer likes it a bit too much, completing at least one playthrough every year. It's a terrific version of a classic game, with pointer controls and occasional waggle that are actually fun to use, along with the inclusion of the Ada Wong 'Separate Ways' sub-campaign.
It arrived as a download on the European Wii U eShop in time for Halloween last year, and though it's taken a while Nintendo of America has now given it a release date for its region. It's arriving on 4th February, probably with the usual $19.99 price tag, with Nintendo making the announcement - of sorts - by uploading a trailer.
It's another one to tick off the wishlist - how many of you in North America plan to pick this up?

It's a bit gutting to not get the HD version but at least we've got some Resi. Does it only support wiimote and no gamepad? That's a bit off putting for me.
Oh, and I love the tag line. Best line in the game for me.
@Moon That's funny, before reading your comment I saw the Wii box cover and thought - wait a minute, didn't this game get ported to every system ever made, isn't there an HD version on PS3 or Xbox 360 we could be getting for $20?
Wii disc is $12.50 from a variety of sellers w/ free shipping on Amazon.

Quite possibly my favorite game on the Wii.
About time Nintendo and Capcom!!
One of the best game ever. At least that I've played, which is quite a few if I do say so myself. I can understand why certain more diehard Resi fans than myself dislike it though, it is quite removed from the games that preceded it. However unlike the ones that followed it is top quality, and not a soulless COD cash-grab. How I wish 7 will be as good as 4...
So they release a horror game to coincide with Halloween in at least two continents that don't particularly recognise or celebrate the holiday, yet they release a horror game close to Valentine's Day in the continent that does celebrate Halloween?
Now, I'm no expert on marketing, but……………………………
NoA has been on a roll lately. Let's keep it up (is more than one a week too much to ask for?).
Xenoblade Chronicles or nothing!
The wii version was playable with the classic controller so should be able to play this on the gamepad
It's about time NOA!! But while we finally getting RE4 the xone and ps4 getting remastered RE & RE0!! You would think that being the Wii u retail scene is just about non existent that you guys would be flooding the eshop with choices like maybe 2-4 vc games a week, 1-2 Wii downloads and 2-3 indie games a week to offset this dry well of more than 2 years!! By miracle yes they are making a profit with the Wii u but they are losing customers in droves!!! If Nintendo doesn't straighten this out with NX ill call Sega and tell em to save a seat for you guys!! I don't care how much money you have, bigger companies than you have gone out to pasture! You read it here first!! Unbelievable
Such a fantastic game. One of my all time favorites. The HD upgrade on the PS3 and 360 did little to improve the game's visuals. Aside from that, the pointer controls on the Wii version makes this the definitive version. I recommend buying a physical copy but if you prefer digital and haven't played RE4 before, you won't be disappointed.
Oh this is cool.
@Moon According to the Europe store its only Wii mote + Nunchuck, or Wii mote + Classic controller. No mention of Gamepad support like other Wii games that support it (Pandora's Tower, Xenoblade etc).
$20 asking price is ridiculous. Yes, its a solid game from start to finish that could last 10-15 hours on a players 1st run. Considering the HD port on PS3/4 goes for the same price or sometimes cheaper, this is just another capcom quick cash grab at WiiU owners.
It's just the Wii version of the game. Nothing more. Follow @rjejr advice and buy it physical for a fraction of the price. With that said, though, still promising to see NoA get something on the eShop.
oooh. interesting. but I do have some questions. For anyone who has bought wii games from the wii u vc:
when I play wii games on my wii u, everything looks so pixelly. Instead of getting nice, smooth edges, everything is all jaggy. Is this also true with wii games bought on the wii u eshop? GBA games have a "smoothing" option. does this exist for wii games too?
and what about color? I've noticed n64 games are much darker than their original versions (or even their wii eshop versions). Are wii games and wii games on wii u vc the same with color?
also, Leon has to be like the hottest RE character (followed by Jill, Ada, Sheva, and then Christ). (^_^ )/
I'm tempted actually. The physical copy I have isn't in the greatest of shape, and as long as classic controller support will mean gamepad support as well it might be worth picking up
awesome! I have the wii version but this is a very good option for those who don't.
I hope they release the gun games and the archives ones. I always wanted to play RE0
@NESlover85 I agree with you 9,000%! Also, this actually a good M-rated game on the eshop that's not Bayonetta. (You don't see that every day!)
Cheaper physical (Nintendo is wonderful for overpriced digital content), late to the service (Halloween might have been smart) and later than both RE4 HD and Origins Collection HD.
Now, I'm not one for kicking someone for when they're down, but Megaman Collection isn't going to sell more copies on Nintendo systems because another Capcom game just re-re-released.
Gamecube > Wii > HD > Wii U
Great ambiance, entirely done in by a (still) middling combat system, unbreakable animations (like the Evil Within but somehow worse) and one of the most self important and entirely obnoxious 2nd party characters in gaming history.
After the solo experiences of RE1-3, both 4 and 0 were unbearable for at least a third of their campaigns. At least when alts showed up in earlier games, they didn't hang around like broken wheels, dragging the game into the mud.
As an early adapter for the Dreamcast (much better architecture than any of the 32-bit systems and 5x better than the N64) Code Veronica disappointed on so many levels while Blue Stinger did alot to differentiate itself (very arcade style games).
And yet, I still preferred both that DC game and the first 3 REs to 4, just because I felt like a babysitter to an absolute moron for half the game.
@Moon Nintendo said that any games that used the pro controller would be updated for gamepad support so that should also include this game.
I didn't intend to rank the versions.
Just pointing out that the game now has 4 seperate versions.
I played this to death (no pun intended) on my Wii. I think I'll pass.
@Moon you can use the classic controller
I do not understand why we can`t have the HD version. And what about Resident Evil 1 HD?
I still have my GameCube version,but never played the Wii one. How are the controls using the Wiimote?
@hcfwesker I think it's because all Wii titles for dl are the same price. Zack and wiki is cheaper at 20 than disk. The flat cost for ps2 games on ps4 is 15. I understand that they add trophies but you can get gta 3 for under six bucks and they charge 15.
@leon_x well for the hd version capcom has to work on the port and spend money and time on the wiiu that they don't want to. With a Wii download just like any vc all they have to do is sign a contact and send Nintendo the code to run on their emulator. From their it's Nintendo doing the work unless it's a gba title then m2 works on it for then. Capcom doesn't invest any labor when it comes to vc. That's why.
Why? It's a great game, but (much like Zack and Wiki) the retail disc is easily available and significantly cheaper. Why wouldn't they release a game that is either harder to find or more expensive?
Sadly this version wont work with the HD version being worked on http://www.re4hd.com/?page_id=1656
This has to be the one game I've bought the most copies of. And I'll buy this one too!
I already have the HD PS3 version, which influenced me to sell my physical Wii copy. If you've never played this, or you're Nintendo only, this is a darn great masterpiece. It kinda looks bad blown up on Wii U in 1080p though. I can witness to that. QA sequences are hard with Wii controls, so plug in that classic controller kids!
Totally missed this one but from what it sounds like I need to play it. Loved 1 and 2 back in the day and loved Revelations on 3DS. What makes it so amazing?
@invictus4000
If you loved Revelations, you'll love this game. Its the first RE to use the over the shoulder view, and its a solid game. It feels more tied to its survival horror roots than 5 and 6, yet offers more action the original 1-3. The gameplay is fantastic, and the story isn't terrible. It just feels like a real Resident Evil, and they implemented the new stuff fairly smoothly. All I can say is, its really fun. I loved it on PS2, then I loved it on Wii, and when it was on a Flash Sale on PSN, I just had to have it on my PS3. Its easily a game you can always revisit.
Bleh. Love Resi 4, but I found the game borderline unplayable with the Wiimote and nunchuk controls.
Doesn't currently support gamepad controls.
Well, I've still got my physical copy that I got at Sears for $30 a few years ago, and it's in great condition. I did end up unlocking everything and playing it MULTIPLE times, but it might be time to fire it up again.
It's a must purchase if I can play with the Game Pad... Still haven't heard/seen any solid confirmation, and can't find anything online either. A lot people saying it should be compatible, which it should...
Yeah wow lol, what most people don't know is that the Wii version is not in a true 16:9 widescreen format and just stretches and crops to fill the screen, Capcom shortcut the port onto the Wii.
This is why it looks bad compared to the Gamecube version on almost any TV you play it on.
I had to hook my Wii up to a Sony Trinitron non-widescreen CRT TV with component cables then set the Wii to 480i, 4:3 and the TV to 4:3 for it to even look remotely close to the gc version but it still didn't brush up as nice.
If I hook the Wii/Wii U up to a widescreen TV whether it be my 50" HDTV or an older LG Flatron CRT TV and set the Wii/Wii U to 16:9 and either HDMI/Component or normal cables and set the TV to 16:9/14:9/4:3 whatever it all looks like shit, I have to letterbox the heck out of it by changing it to 4:3 on both just to make the jaggies less apparent.
I have heard that its better to buy the RE4 gamecube version and play it on a 4:3 CRT TV as the gc version hasn't been messed with so is still crisp without jaggies.
I'm after a copy on Ebay.
@Lizuka it can't be played on the gamepad!! You still have to use the wii mote!
I brought it expecting full gamepad support and got burned ! Ask nin for a refund but no luck!
@Gorlokk it's not compatible, at least in Europe! Nintendo got the messaging wrong! And still won't give me the refund I deserve!!!!!
@Gorlokk it's not compatible, at least in Europe! Nintendo got the messaging wrong! And still won't give me the refund I deserve!!!!!
@DatFunkySmell yep! But it doesn't! I only brought this for off tv play , assuming it would work! I wasted my money on this. Don't be fooled !!!
As much as I love Resident Evil, another Wii ROM for $20/€20?? That's more than what you would pay for a physical GameCube or Wii version.
Capcom sure supports the Virtual Console. At least there's that.
Best version on Wii U now.
@Ralizah
I thought the Wii controls were really tight, but at least (on Wii) you had the option to choose between using nunchuck+remote, classic controller, or GameCube controller.
At the time it was released, this was clearly the best version of RE4. Now I suspect that the PS3 HD version (with optional Move support for aiming) is better.
Loved it on Wii... But why aren't we getting an HD version?? Started playing it recently on my 50" LG and it looks dreadful.... Realise the HD version I've got on Ps3 wasn't exactly a looker but it's a darn sight better than the muddy, grainy Wii version.
Definitely one of the best games ever, candidate for GOAT. This was such an amazing visceral experience to play with the beautiful wii remote.
Actually, the Wii Edition supports the Classic Controller and even the Gamecube Controller. On the Wii there are 4 Gamecube Controller ports for this. On the Wii U, you could possibly use the Gamecube Controller Adapter.

Seriously this is a game worth getting, even if you don't like zombies, resident evil, or "survival horror" just get this game. I've had countless people who would have never have thought of this game play it and beat it because they were hooked. Capcom has almost one of their best Resident Evil games here, and it's finally coming to the Wii VC. If you can't find this game anywhere now is the time to play it.
@PtM @zip that's unfortunate for us Europeans!!
My favorite game of all times. Not withstanding all of the weeks upon days upon hours i spent playing it for the gamecube and then for the wii, i dont think i ever finished everything. Including getting perfect scores on those mercenary missions and much more. Threes a charm!
I was debating on buying this game last year. I probably will get the downloadable version even though it's a little more because I feel like I'd like this better in that format. I hope the original Wiimote control scheme is still supported though.
@XenoShaun
Any game with Classic controller support gets gamepad support. An old update allows it to detect the gamepad as a classic controller.
Best version of RE4. Easily.
@JH64
I'm a little shocked to hear this, considering my above post. It should recognize the gamepad on a Wii OS level.
It should recognise it in the OS, but Ninty don't seem too good at this stuff. Its taking them 6 months to put wireless transfers into the pokemon VC games.
It seems something is needed to get gamepad controls to work and Capcom didn't bother.
I'm another bitter Brit who's annoyed it didn't work.
This is one of my favorite games of all time but I never had the desire to play it again.....but that's how I am with most games.
@JaxonH well I've tried everything with no luck!!
Finally NoA!!!!!!!! I hope you give the first week at a discounted price or I'll be really - really - mad...... YAAY RS4!!!!
The disc version of this game is like 10 bucks only.
@nerffan1 they don't do discount prices anymore. That was only for launch Wii vc titles. The last five have all released at 20.
The reason why the Wii U Gamepad is not supported probably is because the Wii Edition is built to expect bluetooth for controls, but the Wii U Gamepad doesn't have bluetooth. Perhaps Nintendo thinks it isn't worth the effort to translate wifi signals to bluetooth or something.
One of the best video games ever created. Definitely in my top 10.
