This year marks the 25th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog, one of the most iconic video game characters ever created. Sega has a year of celebrations planned, and Toy World Magazine has revealed some of the company's merchandising moves.
Unsurprisingly, much of this activity is focused around the popular Sonic Boom TV series, which is already a hit in many parts of the world and will expand into Russia, Spain and Turkey in 2016. This expansion will see more merchandising partners joining the lucrative Sonic Boom line.
Interestingly, Sega is taking steps to differentiate the various Sonic universes which have sprung up over the past 25 years. Classic Sonic is described as "Pixel Sonic" - a reference to the 16-bit origins of the character - while the Sonic seen in the Archie comic series is now "Comic Book Sonic". "Sonic Boom" Sonic is also seen a separate character to these two in terms of marketing and merchandising.
Preparations for the 25th anniversary are already underway, with Bioworld, Archie Comics and First 4 Figures being some of the first brands to be involved on a merchandising level. These companies will produce toys, books, magazines, clothing and collectables to support the event, and Sega says they will be joined by other official partners in the near future.
It's clear that 2016 is going to be a bumper year of Sonic events, so expect to see a lot more of the Blue Blur throughout the next 12 months. We already know we have a game to look forward to in the form of Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice. Perhaps we might get another as well?

I sure wish I could be excited about what's potentially coming.
I can't even be bothered to speculate on it.
Pixel-Sonic, Comicbook-Sonic and Sonic Boom-Sonic...
"Modern-Sonic" seems to incarnate the post Dreamcast style we have seen in all the 3D games since. So, where is the "Adventure" style 3D Sonic? (the best design it has ever received)
Glad to hear sonic boom is a hit. At least on TV. I've more or less enjoyed the show so I'm glad to hear others are too.
Sonic boom taking over is worrying for enthousiasts. But I think its understandable when kids are less picky than your adult a** person like me
Pixel Sonic? True that those are his origins, but that Sonic starred in more 3D games than sprite games XD (Althought I could be wrong considering all the spin-off on game gear ^^; ).
I just hope they are not trying to lock the Sonic we all grew up with into a nostalgia pixellated picture, I'm still holding tight to the hope they can get the original Sonic right in 3D, I personally loved the Adventure serie, a great serie that needed to evolve and improve, not to be turned down in favour of werehogs, swords and beta projects released too early >.>;;;
So if Pixel Sonic is the new name for Classic Sonic, I will lol so hard.
Maybe Generations 2 with Classic Sonic, Dreamcast Sonic, Modern Sonic and Boom Sonic, Sega?
It's nice!
Give me a good 3D Sonic and I will be happy
I still read the comics so I'll be checking out anything related to those.
Please DO NOT USE big red button to develop the game! sonic team only!!!
@BakaKnight In terms of platformers there's been 11 in 3D (if you include 3D Blast) and 18 2D platformers. Gets sketchy of you include other genres.
With Comic Book Sonic being a thing now, does this mean that we'll get Cartoon Sonic (i.e SatAM and TAoStH)?
Also, is Pixel Sonic a separate entity to the Classic Sonic from Generations?
Finally, Sanic Sonic or riot
@BakaKnight they tried making Sonic Adventure 3... that was Sonic '06
it is a damn shame because Sonic Adventure 2 Battle on the GC might be my favourite Sonic game (followed by Sonic 2, then 3)
I hope Nintendo promotes NX as much as Sega is promoting Sonic this year.
But I doubt it.
Is Game freak involved with Pokken Tournament, I'd have thought we'd be hearing more about that by now? I have no doubt we will be overwhelmed by Pokémons XZ, YZ and Go in the near future.
@NLife Stop bigging up these descriptions. Sega has only described the different versions of Sonic in one article, mainly for people who are unaware of the differences. They have not said that these are the new terms being used everywhere from now on. It's one article!
@joey302 Pretty sure that's not gonna happen. If anyone's developing the next Sonic game, it's probably gonna be Sonic Team.
@NintendoFan64 Let's hope so! I'm worried I might be getting excited over nothing though. Does anyone remember Super Mario's 25th Anniversary? All we got was a Super Mario Allstars for the Wii and it didn't even include Super Mario World or Yoshis Island - a huge disappointment. Even the sound track CD and booklet were a letdown. I hope Sega doesn't follow suit.
I hope there's a new game. The sonic Boom games haven't impressed so far and I'd rather have sonic elsewhere than 3DS anyway.. It'll probably be on PS4 and pc tho with hopefully chances of it coming to NX.
The comics are something I've enjoyed the most out of the series. I wouldn't mind a game about it, I mean the writers are already there.
I'm now hoping for a Generations-like crossover between all of the Sonic iterations. That could have potential just for the story, seeing how his character has been reinterpreted over the years. Boom Sonic is the most relaxed incarnation, Retro Sonic the least sociable, and so on. Maybe like that Spider-Man game from a few years ago?
Pixel Sanic is best Sanic.
@joey302 They are not bad developers, Sega messed up that game form the start, search for the interview with the developers you will know that it was not supposed to be a Wii U game from the start. Porting a game depends a lot on the system power but architecture above all. The wii u architecture is really different from other systems, and considering its not that powerful, and you have to know it very well, I believe they did a pretty good game for what it was, they just needed more time to fix the bugs (I havent played it yet, my point of view is considering the development and the reviews)..
(Thou shall not swear~Undead)
They should make another kart game, Sonic is an amazing character full of nostalgia, but it is not a versatile character you can put in every kind of game without it being awkward... they tried all this years so hard to make a good 3d game, but infinite movements plus a lot of speed equals stuck into walls all the time, breaking the flow..
pixel sonic is sonic the original series. sonic 3d is sonic the next generation. comic book sonic is sonic voyager or deep space nine. i guess sonic boom is sonic: enterprise. maybe anniversary sonic will be j.j. abrams sonic.
@itzdanburton Comic book Sonic has been a thing since like '93.
<- Excited for what's to come. Forget the fool me once shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me crap. I am excited and I have faith.
@Jamotello
Pixel Sonic is Classic Sonic.
3D Sonic is Modern Sonic.
Comic book Sonic is Archie Comics Sonic.
@mjc0961 What's wrong with Crush 40? They composed the music for Sonic Adventure 1 and 2. This games are looked at as the best 3d Sonic games yet.
It's not like their music is bad or anything.
@itzdanburton Would Sonic X Sonic be Anime Sonic or Cartoon Sonic? lol
@rjejr They're going to announce another fighter soon if that counts.
@AGuyWithFood I don't get why it's cool to hate on adventure online now. I think people exaggerate how bad the bad parts are. While 06 may have been a failed attempt at making another one, that doesn't mean the adventure idea in itself is bad. (Also still waiting for another Chao Garden, even if it never comes)
The sad thing is that the Honest Trailer about the Sonic series may be the high point of Sonic's 25th anniversary this year.
I really hope they're working on Sonic Adventure 3. It'd definitely make this anniversary worth remembering.
I vote for a Sonic cross Yakuza game this year, get on with it SEGA, spot a golden idea when you see one. I even have a title for it: Sonic Like A Dragon.
Can't wait to scrape Dr. Eggman's face over the concrete or force his head through a bicycle wheel and meet Amy in a host bar.
Already looking forward to it!
@SteamedOddish SA2 is hated on mainly because many people like me think it's overrated. I mean sure, yeah the sonic levels are good, but tank shooting and treasure hunting in a series that's built off of speed? Not to mention how people say it's better than generations, and colors.
@LilC True. If Sonic Adventure 2 was a game made exclusively with the Sonic and Shadow stages in mind I think that would be the perfect Sonic game for me. Those other segments felt more like a chore than anything else, especially when shooting for A rank on all stages.
@DJaa It's a pity. The Sonic Boom designs suck ass. I'd love to slap the design team responsible into oblivion. I hope they get no more work. Why do they have BANDAGES around their trainers!!!! WHY???????
@LilC I'm admittedly one of those people who would say that Sonic Adventures 2 is better than Sonic Generations and Sonic Colours. Of course, in my opinion, it's not hard to be better than Sonic Generations; I personally found the game to be a rather dull experience with an overemphasis on boosting.
I found all aspects of Sonic Adventures 2 to be pretty great. Whilst I do think the treasure hunting and tank shooting aspects aren't quite as good as they were in the 1st Sonic Adventure game (through Knuckles and E-102 Gamma's parts respectively), I did find them to at least be enjoyable, and a nice bit of variety to go alongside the Sonic levels. An whilst speed has always been an element of the Sonic series, it has never focused solely on speed, and the previous Sonic games had many slower moments to them (the 2nd zone in Sonic the Hedgehog 1 for instance). The inclusion of an absolutely amazing Chao Garden also helps Sonic Adventure 2 to be one of the best of the Sonic series.
Maybe Sega should create a open world sonic game and in the game you can either create your own character or pick one from the Sonic Series.
I would like to see a Sonic game incorporating speed levels, with some interesting puzzles along the way. Also an uncomplicated story with fresh level ideas would be good. Must be 1080p and 60fps for wii u! Bring sonic into the next generation without a 'boom'.
Seems a bit odd to give Archie Sonic an official designation, seeing as how they've forced Archie to adhere more closely to the games' storylines lately, often to the detriment of the comic.
I'd enjoy a pixel Sonic amiibo or at the very least one modeled after his original cover art.
@SteamedOddish I feel the Sonic Adventure games are the best Sonic games out there. Honestly.
