It came as something of a pleasant surprise when Star Fox Zero was officially announced and it was revealed that Platinum Games was to be involved in the production. The studio that's made itself famous by producing over the top action games such as Bayonetta seems to be exactly what the dormant Star Fox series needs, and it will be interesting to see how this different team puts its unique stamp on this classic Nintendo franchise.
Gamespot recently caught up with Yusuke Hashimoto – director of Bayonetta 2 and a co-director for Star Fox Zero – and talked a bit about the upcoming arcade shooter and what it was like working with Nintendo. The seeds of this collaboration were planted in Bayonetta 2, which had its fair share of Nintendo cameos and references. One such reference was placing players in control of an Arwing for a particular shooting stage in the game, which wowed Nintendo executives enough during a stage presentation that they invited Platinum Games to contribute to an in development Star Fox game.
Hideki Kamiya – a director and producer for various projects from the studio – has long since expressed desire to make a Star Fox game, but when Nintendo made its offer, he was too busy developing Scalebound. Hashimoto was happy to pick it up in his stead and remarked on how "stimulating" it is working with Shigeru Miyamoto and his team, highlighting how the team over at Platinum Games has learned a lot over the course of development.
When talking about the rather divisive dual screen set-up of the games controls, he talked about how it's a new concept to both teams and that they enjoy the process of figuring out how to make it fun.
Thinking about how we can make it fun, how we can make it interesting, that's something that neither side really has [done]. It's just new for both of us. That's where you get stimulated: what ideas, what can we do there? It's always fun to think about. We've been working with action games long enough. We understand how the players play an action game, how they respond to an action game, how they'll move, what they'll do in the situational stuff. What we're making here now, it's totally a new learning experience for us, which is kind of fun to find out.
Additionally, it seems that Star Fox Zero may not be the only project coming to Wii U by Platinum Games. Apparently, the team was "cheeky" when asked about the possibility of a Bayonetta 3.
What do you think? Are you looking forward to Star Fox Zero? What unique elements do you think Platinum Games will add to the experience? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

To this day, I still can't believe Platinum Games decided to work with Nintendo on one of the most famous (but not that much talked about) franchise, called Star Fox.
I just hope Hashimoto's tweet about looking forward to more Bayonetta doesn't refer to the Smash we already know about, or to Bayonetta 3 being developed on a competing console. If Nintendo hasn't hired them to put B3 on NX then truly all hope is lost.
@PanurgeJr It seems like Bayonetta is a pseudo Nintendo series by now. Considering how both of them are on the Wii U with tons of Nintendo based content, Bayonetta is showing up in Smash, and the fact that Nintendo published and was involved in the development of 2, I'd be very surprised if the next Bayonetta didn't show up on a Nintendo console.
Ever since Bayonetta was revealed as a Smash character, I realized that Kid Icarus X Bayonetta could actually be a thing. Think about it: both games fall under the same lore (demons and angels fighting and all that), and the main characters Bayonetta and Pit use weapons and hand-to-hand combat. In fact, if you listen closefully in Bayonetta's trailer you can hear Palutena telling Pit, "I thought [Umbra Witches] were extinct." I want to see a game based around that claim; for example, what are the events that led Palutena to believe Umbra Witches were extinct (and I sure hope it isn't knowledge from her know-it-all encyclopedias) or how the existence of Umbra Witches shakes things up for Skyworld. And, of course, Viridi and even the Arum forces.
Maybe Bayonetta 3 is actually Kid Icarus X Bayonetta. One can hope...
EDIT: To make my argument even more plausible, it very much looks like the relationship between Nintendo and Platinum Games has come to a point where such a relationship can easily prompt crossover titles. What better way to start than with Pit and Bayonetta? XD
I'm worried if the final release of the game isn't great because of Kamiya-San's absence in the project.
That said, I feel that this project might be the only innovative game the Wii U has as of now.
I know this article is about Star Fox, but Bayonetta 3?
YES PLEASE
@PanurgeJr I feel that Nintendo putting Bayonetta in Super Smash Bros is basically saying it's their series now. Who knows, they may have even purchased the IP from Sega.
I do believe that Bayonetta 3 is definitely in development and will most likely be launched alongside or during the first year that the NX releases. And if it's not then Nintendo needs to get it into development.
@Socar Bayonetta 2 turned out amazing and this is being directed by the same guy, so I have high hopes.
@Vee_Flames Well we actually do know why she would think Umbra Witches are extinct. I also think a Bayonetta and Pit crossover is the last thing people want. It would literally make no sense at all.
This game doe look very promising. It should be fun to play through this and Twilight Princess HD while we wait for heavy hitters such as Pokken Tournament and Zelda U.
@shigulicious
on the Wii U please! Then a remaster trilogy on the NX! also looking forward to the dual screen gameplay on Star Fox Zero.
I was playing the SNES Starfox today... I'm starting to feel the series call back to me. I think its just about time...
@MrRight Dude, calm your t*ts, this isn't the usual website where you can swear to no end. Secondly, if the man passed on the project, it was his decision, you're a nobody who cannot judge another person for the decisions he/she makes. Finally, that's your opinion of the game, and nobody cares about it.
I remember platnium talking about a bayonetta spinoff idea they had for the 3ds a while back but cant remember the details.
@PanurgeJr Well, I certainly hope they do make a Bayonetta 3. Platinum has their hands full at the moment though. Maybe Hashimoto's team can take it on after Star Fox wraps up.
@faint Yeah, it would be about Jeanne
@Vee_Flames I was hoping for an HD kid Icarus game to be announced at E3. It would be amazing to have a Bayonetta crossover. Maybe Pit is the one Angel she can team up with.
However, crossover aside I would be happy with a new home console Icarus game. If not on the wii u, then hopefully on the NX.
Surely Star Fox Zero is the last Platinum Wii U game as all signs point towards 2016 NX launch?
I couldn't imagine Pit in Bayonetta, they are from completely different worlds and the hierarchy of their heavens and hell are completely different. In theory Pit could exist in Bayonetta's lore as some incarnation of one of the angels at some point through human history. The angels in Bayonetta are actually hideous monsters with masks and armor to hide their true forms, they are also equally as menacing as the Demons from inferno and way more deceptive; so Skyworld would contradict this depiction of Paradisio.
I had an idea that she could fight Ganon and have him turned into a weapon. Perhaps Bayonetta 3 could include a number of optional bosses to obtain optional weapons. I think Ganon, Ridley and Giga Bowser could be great candidates for this, it's clear that these kind of cameos do work in Bayonetta games.
I hope Platinum manage to turn Star Fox Zero into something awesome. The game was in pretty bad shape when Nintendo last demoed it before asking Platinum to step in!
@John_Enigma Some days, I wish they were the sole developer making Star Fox Zero, complete creative control!
I have a bad feeling about Star Fox Zero. I wish I didn't but from what we've seen, a lot of the environments look quite empty and the lack of any real texture looks a bit lifeless. I just hope that the gameplay is awesome.
Anyway, there's only one thing to do. Wait and see!
I'm still waiting for nintendo to purchase platinum games as a first party development studio.
@whodatninja Only some days? Other days you're totally down with co-development
I'll be curious to see if the rumour is true about the reason the game was delayed so they could add costumes to the game enabling you to dress Slippy Toad as Bayonetta.
Admittedly it's a rumour I just made up, but I'm not going to discount it yet.
I thought Miyamaoto's only involvement in the new Starfox was staring at archways like a stoned teenager
@MitchVogel Except that he's not much into Star Fox unlike Kamiya-San is he? So how can he put his best out of something that he's not familiar with?
@whodatninja If they negotiate with Nintendo to become some kind of second-party developer like Game Freak (or one like Monolith Soft), then Platinum Games wouldn't have any problems developing any kind of Star Fox games in the future.
@Vee_Flames Well aside from that. Sakurai has stated he doesn't want to make a new Kid Icarus. So I can see Platinum being an amazing choice for the developer of the series.
That said I can only see the two series sharing a cameo with each other. Like maybe a DLC level where Palutena asks Bayonetta for help fighting over the army of the underworld. Or maybe Bayonetta acting as a deus ex machina for Pit in the nick of time.
@MrRight
This guy IS the peak of Platinum. He's the director of Bayonetta 2. Kamiya isn't the only one with choice talent at Platinum.
And did you seriously just say Xbox One is a garbage console? Ya, said every fanboy about every console they don't own. It's not about Japan, and Scalebound looks amazing.
Kamiya doesn't care about sales, he cares about self-pride from making great games. And no, it won't be his worst selling game- are you kidding? There's a truckload of hype for Scalebound, and you can't do much worse than Wonderful 101.
To the people that say kid icarus X bayonetta would not work - and shin megami tensei is so similar to fire emblem right?
@Aurumonado That crossover isn't really a crossover. It's nothing more than a Persona game with FE characters thrown in for no particular reason.
@Spin Well, we do know there's some similarities (and even relationships) between the two games. I'd like for Platinum Games (like you said, not sure Sakurai would want to do another Kid Icarus title, let alone a crossover title) to explore these possibilities... even if the game leans towards one series over the other.
It seems Platinum Games loves to work on on-rail shooters. And Sakurai just so happened to revive Kid Icarus as an on-rails shooter (plus action-adventure, but you get the idea). So why not? Pit could handle the on-rails section while Bayonetta handles the on-ground (and any other) sections.
@xMetrusx Well, that's why I said now that there's one more Umbra Witch maybe something interesting can happen between the Pit and Bayonetta.
It's all just opinion, anyway...
I can't help but to think that since Platinum Games is involved in the development there would be some cinematic button pressing action scenes (don't know the name of that game scenario). That would be cool.
@ultraraichu
You mean Quick Time Events (aka QTE)? Usually I hate QTE's but Platinum does them in a way I enjoy, even if I die 3 times trying
@JaxonH Oh so that's what it's called, thanks. That been bugging me for months.
Personally I like QTE as long as I don't have to do it on a Xbox/most PC controller (ABXY layout). Years of Nintendo gaming to blame.
Looking forward to the game!
@Bryon15 That would be awesome...but it will never happen, because Platinum won't sell. The best Nintendo can do is to continue to contract out with them. At least all signs point to them doing that.
@Grumblevolcano No signs points anywhere regarding NX. "More info about NX" in 2016 is all we know, and we still don't know what NX is.
@Vee_Flames
No thanks. Bayonetta's tone does not fit at all with KI.
How cute. Deleted posts. Way to run your site like 14 year olds, Nintendo Life. Good thing you can't hide this stuff from me in my email notifications:
@JaxonH
"Dude isn't lying. Swearing WILL get you banned from this site. The only reason I can think you haven't been warned is because of the holidays and they're light on staff and haven't seen the posts yet."
I assure you, they WILL say something when they read any profanity whatsoever. I've been a member here for years, trust me I know."
I guess I overestimated this site. What a joke.
""only other game he's directed is Mario Tennis Ultra Smash."
^^^ This slipped by me. What the heck are you smoking? This guy didn't direct Mario Tennis Ultra Smash- he's a lead director at Platinum! Ultra Smash is a first party title- has nothing to do with P* Games."
I'm aware of this, lad, but there is conflicting information out there, as IMDB lists him as Ultra Smash's Director while Wikipedia does not, so evidently someone made a mistake editing IMDB, but regardless of that fact he's still a nobody. He had no hand in any of PG's best games.
Bayonetta, Vanquish, Anarchy Reigns, Metal Gear Rising, Hashimoto had nothing to do with any of them, and THAT is not conflicting information, it's solid everywhere.
I know you, as a Nintendo fanboy, want to believe that Bayonetta 2 is the pinnacle of Platinum Games, the sad truth is that it is not. Hashimoto is a nobody, and evidently the only noteworthy game he's involved with is a sequel to Kamiya's work.
Feel free to spin that however you like, but the facts are all there. He's proven nothing, even if he didn't have any hand in Ultra Smash.
While I'm at it, how about more fun deleted nonsense?
"You're d*** right it is. I own every platform, because I also have discretionary income up the yin yang "lad". So no, it has nothing to do with Wii U. Bayonetta was the peak of P* long before the Wii U ever existed. And Bayonetta 2 is no exception."
BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, you are beyond delusional.
"You can argue with me on this all you want, but you can't argue with the fact it's the highest rated game this generation."
Good god you use ratings in your arguments, too? You must spend a good portion of each year eating up fecal nonsense like Call of Duty, then, because it consistently gets "high ratings".
"Since when are exclusives the only games worth playing on a console?"
They're not, but when the console is made poorly, has a terrible UI, a terrible controler, a terrible userbase, etc. etc. exclusives become the only thing it's good for. However at a certain point the high cost and low quality of the console outweigh the quality and quantity of it's exclusives.
"But you can't see that. I know your type- you're the type of "gamer" that hates playing video games. You just like to be acknowledged as a gamer. But you have no interest in actually seeking out great games. If you did you wouldn't nonchalantly write off entire platforms"
Ahahahahahahahahaha, listen to yourself. You're trying sooooo hard. I'm glad this site couldn't keep me from seeing your desperate, angry little posts. This is the funniest trash I've read in weeks.
Someone missed their meds
@Ichiban What are you, 12?
@MrRight You only made his argument stronger.
@MrRight If you have a problem with the website, you can always use contact the website button. Oh and Just because someone has an opinion that doesn't match yours doesn't mean ya have ta insult them.
@lickcheez Actually no, not at all. That doesn't even make sense, bud.
@Captain_Toad "If you have a problem with the website, you can always use contact the website button."
A site that caters to children isn't going to change that because someone contacted the staff. I'll go ahead and deal with the rule.
"Oh and Just because someone has an opinion that doesn't match yours doesn't mean ya have ta insult them."
I have never in my life insulted someone because their opinion didn't match mine. You must not understand what an opinion is.
@MrRight
OK, I may not have an PHD in opinions but there were the insults whether you intended it or not.
Those were your words.
"Ahaha, listen to yourself, you're trying so hard."
"This is the funnest trash I've read in weeks."
"What are you, 12?"
And I know it's not related to the current topic at hand and is a bit of an offshoot but...
"Way to run this site like 14 year olds."
@Captain_Toad
I never said I didn't insult people.
I said I've never insulted someone because their opinion didn't match mine.
There's a difference. Learn it.
