A new wave of expansion packs has been released for Lego Dimensions, along with a new feature which allows you to sample Wave 1 characters using the studs you've collected in-game. The packs include Doctor Who, LEGO Ninjago, The Simpsons and The LEGO Movie.
"Hire-a-Hero" allows you to use special characters for a limited period of time - using in-game stud currency - with the idea being that you'll be tempted to shell out the cost of the expansion pack afterwards. Characters from other waves will be included in due course.
Here's the PR:
Fans who want more of the Whoniverse beyond the Doctor Who level in the LEGO Dimensions Starter Pack can purchase the Doctor Who Level Pack which includes "The Dalek Extermination of Earth," an additional mission-based Doctor Who level, along with a 12th Doctor LEGO minifigure, TARDIS and K-9 – all playable in the game. The Doctor must prevent the Daleks from taking over London by travelling through time and space and even to the furthest extents of the galaxy. Equipped with his TARDIS, he is able to navigate the passageways of time and space to solve mysteries and avert hostile alien invasions. Players can activate the Doctor's special Hacking, Technology, Fix-it and Doctor Regenerate option to help him solve in-game puzzles and defeat menacing enemies. The TARDIS and K-9 models can each be physically built and then rebuilt twice to do entirely different things in the digital game for massive variety.
The LEGO Ninjago Team Pack with Kai and Cole LEGO minifigures lets players use their golden Ninja weapons, unleash their Spinjitzu skills and activate other special abilities to overpower any enemy who stands in their way. Players can also rebuild Cole's Builder Bomber into a Boulder Blaster and Cyclone Jet and Kai's Blade Bike into a Flying a Fire Bike and Blades of Fire vehicle.
Players can add a touch of mischief to their LEGO Dimensions gameplay with their choice of The Simpsons Fun Packs featuring Bart Simpson and Krusty the Clown. In The Simpsons Fun Pack with Bart Simpson LEGO minifigure, players can activate Bart's Target and Mini Access abilities to solve puzzles and battle enemies. They can also get on the move in Bart's awesome Gravity Sprinter that rebuilds into a Street Shredder and Sky Clobberer for extra in-game powers. In The Simpsons Fun Pack with Krusty the Clown LEGO minifigure, players can activate his special Growth and Hazard Cleaner abilities. When Springfield's favorite entertainer needs a ride, players can use his Clown Bike and rebuild it into a Cannon Bike and Anti-Gravity Rocket Bike to upgrade its powers in the game.
Players wanting to bring a hop, skip and a dance to the crazy mash-up multiverse of LEGO Dimensions can add The LEGO Movie Fun Pack with the Unikitty LEGO minifigure. Players can activate her special Rainbow LEGO, Master Build, and Big Transform abilities to solve puzzles and defeat destructive enemies. Her Cloud Cuckoo Car can be rebuilt it into the X-Stream Soaker and Rainbow Cannon for upgraded in-game powers.
Will you be picking one of these up, or all of them? Let us know with a comment.

Hire-a-Hero = Cash Grab.
I'm glad I am not interested in this. Amiibo kill me enough as it is.
I've been waiting for the Ninjago one to pick up for my son. Already got the Scooby Doo one for my daughter.
Still trying to get all wave 1, think hire-a-hero is great idea for those unsure about certain characters epically if unsure they'll add anything new, personally I love lego and plan on getting all sets eventually
Not gonna lie, I've been enjoying the hell out of this game, and I don't have kids (yet). Eventually I'll grab everything, but right now I'm more concerned with just unlocking access to each area first. And anxiously awaiting the Ghostbusters level pack.
I've talked with a bunch of people who don't like hire-a-hero.
Personally, I LOVE it! I can 100% without buying a single set ever again. How is that bad? They can advertise their characters all they like.
No thanks, my Amiibo addiction is draining my wallet enough.
Nope. Only buying the Doctor set to have it on display. I don't plan on buying the game anytime soon.
@jawstep You can only use it a little time. Maybe it is like in Splatoon, where you can't test the weapons in any other mode than training.
@Spoony_Tech Have you been playing the game or just buying the toys? I feel like we will get this at some point, but w/ DI 3.0 now taking up our time playing and Skylanders coming soon I don't know when. Looks like Lego may be avoiding the "every other week half off sale" like the other toys to life, which would have been our time to get in. Still Black Friday to come though.
If I weren't getting XCX for Christmas I'd buy it for myself.
@rjejr It's a CHRISTmas gift so it won't be played till then. I am half tempted to get the BttF level pack for myself though. We shall see.
Btw, I'll be picking up Mario Maker for my son there. 10$ off from the rewards plus another 12$ of for the gamers program. Plus they sent me a mystery amount ranging from 5$ to 500$ so at least another 5$ off. I'm loving this Best Buy gamers program and I just started it!
Huh...didn't know about the hire-a-hero thing 'cause I haven't played in a bit. But I'm totally working on collecting the whole set anyway so it hardly matters. Yeah, it's a lot when I'm already doing amiibo and I almost didn't...but Dimensions is what pushed me over into getting Best Buy Gamer Club Unlocked and I've been LOVING the game, so it's worth it IMO.
I completly forgot this game came out in September, indeed I think I never saw it in any store.
Or they poorly distributed it or it wasn't released in Italy at all.
(Actually I just checked, they skipped Italy for real XD; )
Will pick the lot up this weekend, I'll have to make sure I get it all price matched.
@Spoony_Tech OK I'll try to remember not to ask you how it is then. I keep getting close to signing up at BB but Amazon keeps having good delas, and I haven't be there in about a year as its a bit out of the way. And when I looked online the other day about the pre-order $10 bonus I didn't want any of those games, and none of Wiig U of course. Still, with my in tensions of getting a PS4 next year I know I'll use it.
Maybe when Nintendo announces tomorrow an ND on Friday it will include a Wii U Selects line of budget priced games and I can make my $30 back quick. (I figure if I keep making up predictions like that every day eventually one of these days I'll be right.)
Still waiting for sales/price drops. Nectar double up rewards are on at Sainsburys from the 18th Nov, so planning to get 2 level sets for £20 then. It could take me a while to get all the sets I want....
My family has been watching playthrough by Zack Scott of this game on youtube. The game looks fun, and we will get it eventually. Like others, I'm more interested in getting sets of licenses I'm interested in (DC, LotR, Simpsons, Dr. Who, Back to the Future) than trying to get 'em all. I don't have spare time or money for Lego Dimensions at the moment, but some day.
I want to play this, but it's just too expensive. Guess I'll just wait for a price drop...
I was no going to get this, but heavy discounting got me to buy. I won't get all though, just at least one from every IP and one of each ability. I'll just pick up Dr Who pack and Bart from this lot.
@ikki5
The Hire a hero is not a cash grab as you rent them using in game currency. it is not a micro transaction.
The problem with hire a hero is you cannot rent vehicles or tools for 30 seconds as well. You may hire Chell use the portal gun but then when you come across the portal button you will not be able to press it as it is unique to the companion cube. That is the catch.
Also there are Bugs with the Wii U version it seem that prevents a person from time warping from the Victorian London very early on in the Dr. Whoo level pack. I currently can get past there and it completely locks up the Wii U When I try to get past it.
@Spoony_Tech @Spoony_Tech What is this "mystery amount" you talk of with Gamer's Club Unlocked. The program is currently $30 for 2 years of 20% off discounts with reward certificates of $5 earned for every 250 points (or $250) spent on your account. Is there some bonus program I'm not aware of where you can get a random payback of $5 to $500?
Aside from that I love Gamer's Club Unlocked, I paid $60 on sale mid year 2014 and it has been worth every penny. In purchasing Wii U, PS4, Xbox One, Amiibo, Skylanders, and Infinity it has saved me at least 20% on top of Best Buy sale prices. I have yet to see a game I want to buy that would be cheaper on Amazon (I have Prime) than buying at Best Buy. When Disney Infinity 3.0 released I was able to get the Saga Pack for PS4 with preorder discs, eight extra characters, and the Inside Out playset for about $120 at launch.
@Nico07 The mystery amount is just the rewards and doesn't have anything to do with the gamers club. It was like you said the 5$ to 500$ or 5000$ worth added to your points in the rewards account (250k in points)
@Spoony_Tech Ok, the $5 reward certificates are nice as they give you an extra 2% back to spend on another purchase. Basically it makes for a 22% discount if you have GCU, which can stack with any sales that Best Buy frequently has. And the $10 reward certificates are also a nice bonus on pre-orders, that rjejr pointed out are rarely on Nintendo games.
As for LEGO Dimensions, I bought the Starter Pack using some of my reward certificates and am hoping some of the packs will go on sale on Black Friday. Although I'm skeptical as they are packaged and priced like any other LEGO toy. I guess we will just need to wait and see. Amiibo have drained a bit of my funds this year but I don't see many on the horizon for next year.
I like the caption text for this article's picture, very clever indeed.
