Puzzle & Dragons Z was a massive success in its native Japan, and encouraged Nintendo to work with developer GungHo to create a Super Mario-themed semi-sequel - which was released alongside the original game in the west.
While Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Edition wasn't as commercially successful as Puzzle & Dragons Z, that hasn't stopped GungHo from expanding the series to a third title on the 3DS.
That's right - teased on the cover of Japanese magazine CoroCoro, another Puzzle & Dragons outing is headed to Nintendo's handheld. There's no artwork, screens or even hint about what tone the game will take; all we know is that it's 3DS-bound.
More details will arrive this month, and there's a fair chance that the new game might be officially announced in the Japanese version of tomorrow's Nintendo Direct.

I would still want Puzzle & Dragons Z as a separate eShop game, I really don't care for the Mario makeover and wouldn't want to buy the current release when I know I wouldn't be touching the other half of the cartridge's contents. Z, on the other hand, looks awesome and I've wanted to play it ever since it was shown.
Awesome. Awesome to the max.
"in the Japanese version of tomorrow's Nintendo Direct."
Didn't knwo Japan was gettingit's own version. That's actually good to read, means theyhave enough material to go around the regions.
My kid wants the original for Christmas. B2G1 free at Target this week means I need to remember to pick it up along w/ LoZ:ALBW and LoZ:TFH.
Hopefully we get more monsters, as in, WAY more! Not all of the 2000+ shenanigans on the mobile version, but at the very least twice as much, and no Mario Bros. Edition in exchange.
However, I highly suspect that a SMB side will be part of the deal, and with Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Bros. closing in, we might get a wide variety of Paper Mario characters added to the fray.
@rjejr They always do, just like we also get separate Directs for US and EU. And even when you don't understand a word, thejapanese Direct still interesting to watch, since the topics tend to differ greatly from the western versions.
Didn't much like Puzzle & Dragons Z, but the Super Mario edition was quite good. Not £25 for a physical copy good, but I could see this game on a smartphone.
@Kaze_Memaryu "They always do"
Did they get a separate version for E3? E3 was the last one, so it's the last thing I remember, and I remember it not being very good, and I dont' remember there being an EU or Japanese version. If there were, I hope they were better than the version we got in the US.
Hopefully it doesn't have that useless, clunky overworld mechanic and also has more monsters like the mobile (and free) version
I'd play it. Loved both Z and the mario edition.
@rjejr I've always assumed that most directs were regional, to some point. I mean, they definitely have to do different takes for each language, and even after that, I'm sure they personalise each one. In the past, there was probably continuity between what Iwata said in each region, and then they would always have a brief segue into Bill Trinen or another detailing regional releases. Though I don't think Damien necessarily means that we're getting a completely different direct, if that's what you thought.
I'm going to get this at some point. If I find it used at a decent price.
...Will they localize it, is the question. TwT
The Mario version was more like the mobile version which was good. The other one was bogged down with some kind of RPG - I didn't have time for it.
Hopefully they scale back the RPG elements significantly if they make a new one.
I think I'll pass on this one. I wasn't as big of a fan on them P&Ds on 3DS (SMB edition was too simple, P&D Z was too complex, but both just felt too repetitive for me through and through).
@rjejr Not sure, actually, but I believe E3 was an exception due to being an international-targeting presentation. Otherwise, every Direct got separate versions for each region, except Australia, who get the EU one, despite differences in release dates.
Cool. Even though I still am kinda wanting the Mario edition lol The demo was fun.
@Nicolai As far as I knew, NoA sent the tweet, so I really didn't know if anybody outside of the US was getting an ND. And I know in the past different regions have had different NDs, but I also know in the past Iwata hosted them, and that obviously isn't going to happen, unless it's his Muppet, and we also used to get them every month or 2, and now w haven't gotten one for 6 months. So I think we are kind of starting fresh, nothing that happened in the past is a very good guide for the future.
Details for a minor (compared to the more mainstream franchises at least) 3DS game are easily dealt with before the upcoming Direct.
This is always a good sign.
Meh i didnt like the first one even a little
@rjejr That's a fair point. At this point, who knows what might happen?
Ugh, no, pass
I just bought it used from Best Buy for $20. My kids have wanted it since it came out.
I rather just pay for something, I don't like F2P.
PaD is cool so maybe this new entry will get me to buy it. I decided to hold off on the Mario+PaD version here in America as I needed the money, so maybe I can just wait for this sequel instead. Not in any hurry either.
I'll do a total stab in the dark: This will be themed on either Yokai watch, Pokemon or Zelda!
I put 120 hours in the Mario Edition....haven't even started the other one on the card since I needed a break XD Keep them coming though
When i originally bought PAD: SMB edition, i was more for PADZ. seriously, it's kind of thin to have reused NSMB Mario assets in a game with a steep difficulty curve, even if you're given support/captain characters out the wazoo. personally like the Saturday morning anime script vibe PADZ has, kind of juvenile in a way but who can argue that some guy's extensional crisis about peanut butter isn't a marginally more of a new experience than the Mario portion of the game?
Refuse to use Boo Bros though since apparently that makes the Mario portion too easy. remove the difficulty and suddenly you're just left with the Mario IP. never seen any 2-type monsters in the PAD part unless Mario is based on later mechanics?
This is just where the differences between merchandising shine: Mario can easily adapt to different genres. but when it's compared to what's essentially the same product, Mario just doesn't look as good. PAD has characters, scripting and unique families of monsters to like. even the Mario RPGs usually has dialogue given by NPCs and usually takes place in much more radical locations than just a vanilla mushroom kingdom.
I still have to get the first Puzzle and Dragons game. Hopefully I can find a good holiday sale on it.
I've been waiting for P&DZ since its Japanese release, I would have thought releasing that first then P&D:SMBros would have made more sense....
