It's that time again, North American gamers, for the Nintendo Download Update. This week brings an exceptional retail release on the Wii U, some interesting home console downloads, a promising 3DS programming app, a load of discounts and even a WiiWare download. Yes, really! Let's get to it.
Missed the European Nintendo Download Update earlier in the week? What a disaster! Don't panic though, the information is still right here.
Wii U eShop
Momonga Pinball Adventures (Paladin Studios, $5.99) - A twist on pinball that previously appeared on smart devices. There's a story mode with nine levels and three minigames - Panda's Dream in which you float through the sky, the Pachinko-inspired Guachinko, and finally Arena for 'survival-mode pinball'. We'll roll into a review soon.
Rakoo & Friends (Moving Player, $9.99) - A blend of racing and adventure with 60 solo levels promised, this version ups its game over the smart device original with the addition of multiplayer. Check out our handy Rakoo & Friends review to find out more.
Ninja Strike: Dangerous Dash (Natsume, $5.99) - This is a rather basic-looking action title which sees you running through levels collecting treasures and taking out bad guys; based on the prompts to tap the screen in Nintendo's assets this will likely closely resemble the smart device original. We'll summon our inner ninja to bring you a review.
Wii U Virtual Console
Final Fight One (Capcom, $7.99) - The Game Boy Advance had a few SNES remakes, and this gives the treatment to the original 16-bit version of Final Fight. There are three playable characters, a new stage, special outfits and mode in the portable version; we gave this a modest recommendation in our Final Fight One review, yearning for the arcade version as we wrote it.
Wii U Retail Download
Yoshi's Woolly World (Nintendo, $59.99) - The latest cute platformer from Good-Feel, this brings Yoshi and chums into a soft, cuddly environment in which to run and jump. With plenty of amiibo support, co-op, transformations and some delightful moments, this is a platformer that's been on some wishlists since its first conceptual reveal two years ago; we gave it a hearty recommendation in our Yoshi's Woolly World review earlier in the year. Available from 16th October.
New Super Mario Bros. U + New Super Luigi U (Nintendo, $59.99) - As the title makes clear this is a download (also available in stores) that combines the excellent Wii U launch title with its rather enjoyable Luigi DLC. Available from 16th October.
Wii U eShop Temporary Discounts
ZaciSa's Last Stand (ZeNfA Productions, $1.59 until 5th November, normally $3.99)
WiiWare (yes, really)
Crunchyroll (free) - This video streaming app arrived on the Wii U in late 2014, but now there's a Wii version. Which is nice, we guess.
3DS eShop
SmileBASIC (SmileBoom, $9.99) - An app in which aspiring game makers can teach themselves to use BASIC, in the process using all of the available tools to make their own 3DS games. This will expand upon the features in DSiWare title Petit Computer and include more tools, assets and capabilities, which means programmers should be able to create and share some fun and innovative games. We'll get coding and bring you a review.
The Magic Hammer (Wobbly Tooth, $5.99) - This seems ambitious in nature, promising an open-world RPG with customisation and exploration featured. Throw in local and online co-op alongside a 'Creative Mode' and this promises much; we'll see whether it's magical in our review.
3DS eShop Temporary Discounts
Etrian Mystery Dungeon (Atlus, on discount from 19th October to 2nd November)
Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan (Atlus, on discount from 19th October to 2nd November)

Hello Kitty Picnic With Sanrio Friends (Majesco, on discount from 19th October to 26th October)
Hello Kitty and Sanrio Friends 3D Racing (Majesco, on discount from 19th October to 26th October)
Fairune (CIRCLE Entertainment, on discount until 5th November)

Dress to Play: Magic Bubbles! (EnjoyUp Games, on discount until 29th October)
Fantasy Pirates (EnjoyUp Games, on discount until 12th November)
Van Helsing Sniper Zx100 (EnjoyUp Games, on discount until 12th November)
Classic Games Overload: Card & Puzzle Edition (Telegames Inc, $14.99 until 9th November, normally $29.99)
3DS HOME Themes
The Legend of Legacy: "The Seven Adventurers"
Yoshi's Woolly World: Yoshis on Parade – Available from 16th October.
That's everything for this week's North American update - let us know what you plan to download in the poll and comments below.

Pretty excited about SmileBASIC coming out. It's pretty geeky, but also a lot of fun to see your ideas come to life right in front of you.
I'm so glad SmileBASIC is finally here!
I'm going to download it asap! Only a few more hours!
Ugh, I need more SNES VC games.
I didn't pre-order but I'll see if I can get Yoshi's at Best Buy tomorrow. Didn't even realize it came out so soon. Kids will love it!
I quite enjoyed Momonga on my wife's iPhone, I just wish it was out on the 3DS. Still, I might double dip.
Nice timing TW.
Couldn't figure out how to download a yarn Yoshi amiibo so went with Amazon for that one.
So, no Nintnod Selects for 3DS, my kid was ready to buy that Zelda game?
So does Mario and Luigi count as a GOTY or Collectors Ed or Greatest Hits or whatever you want to call it? So maybe we can get MK8 w/ the season pass for $60 and SSB w/ the DLC for less than $99 someday? I always like it when Ntinedo catches up to the rest of the industry. May not sound like it, but I do.
Rakko and Friends for $10 is tempting to play w/ the boys, but will probably wait for a sale, no rush there.
Getting the amiibo bundle Yoshi's Woolly World physical copy so nothing for me to download this week or any other week... as usual
@Spoony_Tech "came out so soon"
3 months after the rest of the world is soon?
I was going to go to BB tomorrow to buy it and pick up GCU, but Amazon shipped it before I could cancel it. Might still do it for XCX collectors ed though, it's a Christmas gift so I don't need it Prime delivered. My kid is getting Yoshi as a gift Saturday morning.
BB still has the amiibo pack available for pre-order, I bet it will still be available in store, not enough Wii U owners clamoring for this, you aren't the only person who didn't realize it releases tomorrow I'm sure. Though it was widely displayed in the Sunday flyers for Target and Best Buy along w/ the Wii U sales, I was most impressed. Yoshi! (squeaky little Yoshi voice)
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/yoshis-woolly-world-green-yarn-yoshi-amiibo-figure-nintendo-wii-u/4349800.p?id=1219735414065&skuId=4349800
Thank heavens! I was going mad waiting for yet another version of Final Fight
Well, seems I am still on course to have the cash piled up for Xenoblade Chronicles X. Nintendo of America still seems incapable of presenting an appealing deal to tempt me otherwise. I was slightly worried that one of the rumored Wii titles I am interested in would have appeared.
I should have known that NoA is too scared to release more than a single big title at a time. One of these days they will realize they would be a series threat to people's wallets if they got their stuff together. Given their current pace they could easily do the following:
Week 1 - Big Wii U Title of the month, Virtual Console game, eShop filler
Week 2 - 4 Virtual Console games, eShop filler
Week 3 - Big Wii eShop release, Virtual Console game, eShop filler
Week 4 - Major Nindie eShop release, eShop filler
So no Nintendo Selects for for 3ds for us Yanks? I wonder if ninty has heard of this new thing called The Interwebz where people can find out what's going on in the rest of the world...perhaps they just don't care.
It's a bit contagious because I don't care much anymore either. Way to go, Big N.
SmileBASIC looks fascinating but I can barely put down Mirai DX for 10 minutes at a time (have logged 35 hours since I bought it 96 hours ago). I'll vote for it but I don't know how many weeks it'll be until I make the purchase.
It's nice to only own a 3DS and not have to vote "nothing for me this week" for a change.
Momonga Pinball Adventures looks like a delight. I'll be picking that one up eventually
The Magic Hammer for me because I could use some levity alongside SMT IV right now. I really enjoyed the last two games from Wobbly Tooth, so I'm optimistic for it.
yoshi is $49,99 not 59,99
I also just watched the trailer for Momonga and I'm probably in for that as well. Pinball, adventure and cute animals all add up to SOLD.
New Super Mario Bros. U + New Super Luigi U for 59,99 is way too much! Wii U needs its own selects line-up.
@MarceloKamui Correct the stand alone game is $49.99 and the bundle is $59.99
FINAL FIGHT ONE :3
while in Canada it is 59.99 for the eShop version, $64.99 for the stand alone version and $79.99 for the bundle. definitely nothing for me this week. I'm getting Dragon Ball Z next week and might pick up Chibi Robo Zip Lash in store while shopping for my daughter's birthday present.
Guess if I had to choose, it would be Yoshi's Woolly World, but I'm saving that for part of my christmas list (eshop card)
Congrats America! You finally get Yoshi's Woolly World! And I wholeheartedly recommend it, it's such an adorable and wonderful game, I can't praise it enough honestly.
And then I see you're also getting the Woolly World 3DS theme. I want that one, too! D:
WHERE THE HELL ARE THE WII U VIRTUAL CONSOLE GAMES NOA?!?
THE PERSISTENCE OF ONE A WEEK IS DOWNRIGHT AGONIZING!!!!!!😡
Another week, another disappointment...
When I see Crunchyroll again, I actually thought it was for the 3DS this time...
Nothing for me again...but I'll get Yoshi this weekend
WE NEED ZERO SUIT!
http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ABCOKRJ4VdY
SmileBASIC perhaps, but I won't get it right now.
Crunchyroll for 3DS, please.
The friends of Runbow sale is also still going on.
Despite the Wii's age, it wouldn't be surprising if there was still a sizable chunk of owners using it for Netflix, Youtube and now Crunchyroll besides games and other apps. I know a few people like that.
The Wii Remote offers a better interface than smart TVs and their remotes, for one.
Where is Nintendo Selects discount in Europe that Nintendo Life announced on Monday, right here?
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2015/10/nintendo_download_15th_october_europe
What the... Is not our eShop updated on Thursday around 2PM BST? I already see the new games.
The wii is becoming the Playstation 2 of this generation.... this yet to be WiiU owner doesn't mind! Nothing notable for this week until the reviews convince otherwise.
Crunchyroll, yeahh, i am one of the few people that play Wii U (in gamepad) while I see youtube or netflix in my Wii in TV.
Smilebasic!
<faints>
Go to download SmileBASIC, says its a new release. Click and it says "Coming to Nintendo eShop"
Why, why, why must I wait even longer for this, Nintendo?!
I sincerely recommend Yoshi's Woolly World to everybody, it has become one of my favourite Wii U titles.
@MajinCubyan You only need to wait like, 10 more minutes now!
ONLY TEN MORE MINUTES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I literally just finished Yoshi's Woolly World this week... & I got it way back in June! I work full-time & I've two kids so my gaming time is limited... & I'm still playing Splatoon as much as I can, so that too lol. Also I'm very thorough, I 100% each level before I move on! I've 100% completed every level on every level, very satisfying! I wholeheartedly recommend the game to you guys, I've no idea why NOA have made you wait, but it'll be worth it. Enjoy!
@VanillaLake I was thinking about picking that up as well.
@mystman12 Gaaaaah, 8 minutes! I guess I'll just play New Vegas while I wait.
@MajinCubyan I can't imagine it's fun to programme with a touch screen keyboard?
@VanillaLake @rjejr
Notice how the Nintendo Selects were only announced for Europe, and that this is a North American update.
Magic Hammer sounds interesting, butt will have to see if it looks great.
crunchy roll on 3ds would be greatly appreciated
@rjejr Yeah, that Nintendo Selects 3DS batch seems to still be EU only, but I expect NoA will do something in time for the Holiday season.
The Yarn Yoshi amiibo is worth getting, it's my favourite amiibo by a long way.
Another week, another chance for me to save my money and spend on other things.
I sure hope Nintendo isn't working too hard with these weekly releases because they could have done zero work and released nothing and gotten the same desired effect.
If EMD is $15 or lower, I might have to jump on it.
SmileBASIC is only 110 blocks, that's pretty great.
Any ideas how much Etrian Mystery Dungeon and Etrian Odyssey IV will cost?
I am getting Yoshi's woolly world amiibo edition probably downloading final fight!!!
What happened to Tomorrow Corp's new game? It was supposed to launch today according to Nintendo Life
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2015/09/human_resource_machine_coming_to_wii_u_soon
@mystman12 lol thanks for sharing. That was great. Haven't watched homestar in forever.
@manu0 This is very true. I used the PC app for PTC to actually do the writing. I like using the actually application for sprite and tileset editiing.
Nothing for me this week! Might pick up SmileBASIC if it ever goes on discount.
Would have preferred Final Fight One on the 3DS but I will still get it.
lol...WiiWare...
...Anyways can't really buy anything anymore...the only thing I can actually get is XCX. Everything else will have to wait until next year...(well, I can get an Amiibo here and there, I guess. lol)
@ThomasBW84 $40 Mega yarn Yoshi amiibo is worth getting, or are you just talking about the normal sized ones? Normal sized yarn ones are $17 in the US, seems like only blue and pink, green in the box for an extra $10 made it really worth getting.
I'm sure NOA will do something for the holidays too. I'd like to know what at some point, but "something' probably covers it.
SmileBasic for me
SmileBASIC, whoo! Bout time.
@Tman Wii U version has been delayed by at least a week. They accidentally submitted the game late, apparently. Or, according to how Tomorrow Corporation put it, they tried to jam the Wii U version with 'too many mushrooms'.
@OneBagTravel thats funny I need $.01 for every time people complain about lack of games so I can afford more.
Just Yoshi physical for me. Momonga looks kinda fun but I'm always wary of the mobile port. Might be a good time waster though?
Hey guys!!! Tekken Tag Tournament 2 for Wii U has been permanently reduced to $19.99 in North America! Source: Wii U eShop!
@MajinCubyan Yep for €20 it's a good deal. It's a game for short sessions so it's convenient to have the digital version. I'm glad I didn't pay €45 for the retail version.
@MajinCubyan If you mean Yoshi's Woolly World, I got the retail version with the green yarn Yoshi.
@Knuckles Yep I know...
I hope Yoshi goes down well in America - it would be nice if you guys got something added to it due to the borderline offensive wait. I've long since completed it, but still 2 world's left to 100% for the bonus levels (which are among the very best so well worth being thorough for). It might be super easy, but every stitch is full of so much charm.
@GLA It's not that easy if you don't use the Mellow mode and the badges!
SmileBASIC is out. Neat! Hopefully, the Petit Computer Mega Man 2 remake gets ported to this!
I'm getting the Yoshi amiibo Bundle tomorrow!
I may get the blue and pink yoshi amiibo if they are readily available...
SmileBASIC
THAT's HOW WE ROLL!
@VanillaLake I must be getting better then:)
Woolly World for me. Great reviews and positive fan feedback have me sold on this one.
@Uberchu stop buying crappy games and buy good ones instead.
@GLA LOL Do you remember that blue level where it's almost impossible to go through the lower part because there are tons of hazards coming? Then I discovered a higher route. That level IS hard.
@k8sMum Reggie is stupid. That's probably why.
Can't wait to give Woolly World a try. I will probably die from an overexposure of cuteness.
Can't deny that people still play wii
It is not in this list (it was on last week's list) but I am extremely tempted to buy another copy of Devil Survivor: Overclocked. My sister has a copy and I have played the game on it (after playing the original DeSu) and since it is only $9.99 I feel like buying it again.
Yes I like it that much. Plus I am on a SMT high after finishing SMT IV (one route so far).
Otherwise, I might just pick up Etrian Mystery Dungeon when it goes on discount next week.
I think they forgot to mention that One Piece Unlimited World RED got reduced to $19.99
@VanillaLake sadly not. Maybe the novelty of actually completing a game so quickly has cancelled out the memory of any tough parts for me
@GLA Anyway, Yoshi's Wolly World is an awesome game.
@ianolivia I wouldn't just blame Reggie.
SmileBASIC took me by surprise, even if I was casually visiting the website on occasion...
Sorry NoA. Releasing Yoshi much later in your biggest market is beyond stupid. I wouldn't have bought it months ago. As it stands I've moved on.
@GLA yeah offensive is the right word. I'm not getting it out of principle. Withholding a finished game when NOTHING was being released is just insulting.
Saw Magic Hammer a couple weeks ago and was totally psyched for it. It's good to see more open world sandbox-ish games hitting the eShop, hopefully this one will be half-decent.
Getting Yoshi tomorrow! (physical with amiibo)
No Nintendo Selects discounts for US? ok...
Well, not really new WiiWare. Boring.
They're going to have to release something spectacular if they want my money. As far as I'm concerned Nintendo has thoroughly shot themselves in the foot. I have little motivation to invest any further the Wii-U or 3DS. They killed the Nintendo Club, they've put EA to shame with so much DLC, they've spending way too much time on Amiibo and 3DS themes and far too little on quality games and they've announced the NX which should go into production in less than a year.
@OneBagTravel lol? retail games cost me $48 for wii U, and $32 for 3DS....
I'm not made of money.
