A group of Zelda fans have decided to take the classic gameplay and graphics from A Link to the Past and apply it to what is arguably the most famous outing the the Zelda series, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
The game is in the very early stages, and it’s not clear what engine the game is running on, but it’s already beginning to look like a promising endeavour for Zelda enthusiasts.
Many of the assets have been taken from previous Zelda titles, but many of the sprites and world will have to be drawn afresh, as many of the characters and areas of the world that were in Ocarina of Time were not in any other titles.
Be sure to cast your eyes over the opening trailer that these hard-working individuals have put together and tell us what you think of it in the comments below!

In before someone (again) says "don't post this Nintendo Life. Nintendo will shut this project down sooner!"
Random meme:
Looks awesome, but good luck making the Water Temple.
Interesting. I'm digging into my memory like crazy because of this clip since I can't remember the tree saying "yes, I'll kick the bucket soon" in the N64 original. Maybe I'm wrong but it seems so out of place in between all of the "ye olde" English lingo used...
I'd rather it be a 3D remake of Zelda II, or the OG.
It'd be awesome if these were actually made with Mode 7
I am torn - I want to wait to download this until more's complete (they continually release the latest versions) but if I wait too long I risk it being shut down before I get to play it. DX c'mon Nintendo, let us have this one
No, just no! The original was and is a classic that shouldn't be messed with. We have enough 2d Zeldas leave the 3d ones alone.
I wish someone would do the opposite of this to Link to the Past. Preferably Nintendo.
@Spoony_Tech
Aside from that rimshot and the use of "kick the bucket", I don't see how this can hurt Ocarina Of Time in any way. Personally, I'd be glad if a good ROM came out of this, rather than a PC game.
However, the fan project I care about the most is Mother 4. About this, I dunno. As I just said, comedic writing belongs to Mario & Luigi, not a Zelda game. But who knows, maybe some Mystery Science Theatre 3000-style riffing can give this project some more personality (not that Ocarina Of Time ever needed it in the first place, mind you).
On a brighter note, this might just be the right Ocarina Of Time for Egoraptor (if anyone's puzzled by what I've just said, check out his "A Link To The Past vs. Ocarina Of Time" video).
Dying to see actual gameplay of this. Very interesting concept.
What was with the rimshot sound effect at 3:18?
@Spoony_Tech Unless every copy of OoT everyone owns is being edited into this as they work on it, they are not "messing with" it.
I'll just repost what I said about this earlier:
"Honestly, Ocarina of Time does not convert to 2d very well. The game is built around being 3d, to make it 2d would involve having to heavily reimagine every aspect of the game."
@CaviarMeths I believe it was becauses the Great Deku Tree was "sapped" of his energy?
Also for some reason it bothers me to have this long of cutscenes in a 2d Zelda game. I dunno I guess I just prefer the text boxes you can just scroll through and skip. Unless of course you accidentally tell them to repeat it all again...
Didnt like the idea of a 3D zelda game. Very keen on getting this in 2D. Mode 7 would be epic though.
LttP ftw.
Anyone remember when a team tried to do something similar to this about 10 years ago? They released a demo build, it was cool but never materialized into anything. Teams that do things like this need to remain SILENT until they actually finish it. Announcing it now will just result in Nintendo shutting it down and it never taking off.
That was painful. The original line in English was "yes, I will pass away soon..." not "yes, I will kick the bucket soon..." This isn't quite a demake (they tend to be more serious in their handling of the material) nor a parody (it isn't satirizing anything), so it mostly looks like a bunch of kids (or adults) were just screwing around and posted it to YouTube to kick up hits.
It also doesn't show important things like how they will show the difference between Young and Teen Link when the time travel occurs.
EDIT: If anything it shows me why Nintendo is so draconian and protective of their IP. While a simple translation choice or other small changes seems minor, it can completely change the tone of the product. Go look up Star Wars Guardians of the Galaxy Style Trailer to see a good example.
I would totally play this
People got to respect Nintendo's properties. Just wait until this gets shut down like Mother 4
@Nintenjoe64 They basically did. It's called: "A Link Between Worlds".
TheRealMethuselah? Take me back to 2003
Have fun doing it. But it does seem a bit crazy to do. It for sure won't be better than Ocarina of Time 3d. Seems if these guys have the talent to do something like this they would do something fresh.
Too low-res and unprofessional, I don't think they would do it like this if this game was on SNES. Sorry!
@Mega719
They do, thats why fan projects like this are done in the first place.
I doubt tthis nor Mother 4 will be shut down, I've seen quite a few other fan projects based on Nintendo's IP and Nintendo seems to leave 'em well enough alone. Game Freak is well aware of the Pokemon ones, and they're all over Youtube, Nintendo doesn't even DMCA them. As long as they don't make money off it should be fine.
@Zombie_Barioth they should be on Nintendo systems not PC
Hmm, not sure yet. While a 2D version could be great, it looks like they used to much Alttp assets. I am not a big Alttp fan.
This is irrelevant. As much as I would love a 2D version of Ocarina, projects like this never get finished. Either the developer(s) get busy with life and abandon it or Nintendo sends a C&C.
No sense in getting excited, and watching these trailers just makes it hurt more.
@ShadJV Then just download this version now but wait to play it until there's either a more complete version with which to replace it or the project gets shut down.
@BulbasaurusRex I meant how far along to download, unless I choose to continually download every time they update, which may be a pain... For the record, I decided to download and play it as a break from Hyrule Warriors and it was cute, albeit glitchy (I got stuck in a ladder at one point and had to restart, thankfully the text can be skipped quickly). I have a handful of complaints but, given this is a bunch of fans, iron out the noticeable glitches, finish the whole game, and I'll be happy. As it is it ends abruptly, as in it just traps you in a room, I had to go on the forums to see what was happening, thought I got stuck...

it's weird though.... and there is a lot not in it.... and there is a lot in it that shouldn't be... lol
@Mega719
Tell that to Nintendo.
Seriously though, its not like the fans can really help it, PC is the only option. I'm sure some if these guys would jump at the chance to have Nintendo back them though, imagine if something like Pokemon Type Zero had official support.
@Zombie_Barioth yeah it's not like you have an indie powerhouse sitting right in front of you
It has to be mine!!!
@Zombie_Barioth who even said PC is the only option anyway?
what is up with the ugly and dark thumnail you guys used? its so dark that isnt even the original but you guys should replace it... even with at least the one i drew cuz give the great deku tree some justice

Exclusive interview with the developer of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 2D http://bit.ly/1xBAuDw
I know this is a fan project, but I get so frustrated with repurposed, competing art styles and anachronistic graphic effects in these sorts of things. It's great that those working on this have been experimenting and putting a lot of effort into it. I'm sure they are building some great skills. Still, I won't be downloading this.
Ocarina of Time simply don't work in 2D.
There's a lot more beyond the graphical aspects in this game. The maps, towns, puzzles and everything (including ocarina songs) were planned to work as a whole in the first Zelda translation to 3D. The game was made this way and that's it.
I felt like every single map looked and played very empty, lifeless, dull, without half of the charm the original had. And yeah, the graphics didn't age pretty well since 1997, but going 2D isn't a smart move if you ask me. Why not develop a decent HD texture pack or a ROM mod for emulation instead?
I doubt this project will ever be be finished. There's too many problems into translating such game to 2D (specially dungeons, bosses etc) and Nintendo probably will shut it down and lawsuit everyone. We saw it happening before.
@Mega719
For most fan projects it usually is, the only other option is homebrew. What do you think would happen if they tried getting projects like this or Mother 4 published on the e-shop? They'd be denied, and at worst forced to shut it down.
The PC is the only place where you can truely make and distribute things on your own, without any sort if middle-man between you and the community.
@Scapetti Oh man, I was waiting for that comment, I followed him (AKA Daniel Barras) with such loyalty waiting for that release. Ah man I was so unhappy when I realized it was never going to be released...
@LightSamus I was looking for it and then I thought... "what if it's me? Perhaps I am the one destined to make this comment." And then I did, so I guess it WAS destiny
