Cast your mind back a few weeks and you'll recall that we reported on a rumour relating to the next Sonic the Hedgehog title.
According to an inside source, the game is currently in development for a wide range of platforms - including the Wii U and 3DS - and is expected later this year.
Another little rumour has surfaced recently relating to the title of the game. Apparently, Sega has given the new instalment the internal codename Sonic Adventure 3, suggesting that it will follow in the footsteps of the Dreamcast-based series which attempted to go toe-to-toe with Super Mario 64 over a decade ago.
Would you like the next outing for Sega's famous mascot to complete the Adventure trilogy? Let us know by leaving a comment.

I've never played any of the Sonic Adventure series, so I don't know whether or not to be hyped.
I like the Sonic Adventure games, so it'd be nice if this was true.
Even if it is true, I'm still not confident that they'll do a good job.
yawn... still don't think it'll be called SA3
Sonic Heroes was basically SA3... Just throwing that out there
Regardless, I'd rather something fresh than "Oh hey, we're just rehashing an old concept again. Yeah we know Generations and Colours were awesome, but now you can lumber around as Omega!"
OH GOD PLEASE DO IT
I was in love with Sonic Adventure 2 Battle
SA1 and SA2 are terrible in comparision to any modern platformer, and frankly, they were barely good in late 1990s standards. I'll be giving any new game that plays like SA1/2 a miss.
Sonic fans have been wanting this for some time haven't they? I would also love another Sonic Adventure game. Great series.
So I take it this won't be in 2D like Sonic 4 or Generations? If it's in 3D, I really hope they take notes from Sonic Colours since that was one of his better games.
We don't want another Sonic 2006 Tragedy.
i hope it plays like sonic colours and Sonic Generations did
SA was awsome, SA2 was abit boring, if they make a SA3 hopefully it would be better then the rest.
Chao Garden please.
I'd rather a 2D sonic honestly, wouldn't say no to a sonic Adventure 3 though always found the other 2 a bit of a mixed bag but fun over all.
@GazPlant I like Sonic Heroes actually, I know a lot of people hate it but I happen to like it. don't judge me, please
@Reala though I doubt the next Sonic game is gonna be called Sonic Adventure 3, I wouldn't say no to that either, I'll still pick it up anyway!
OMG FINALLY AFTER 14 YEARS SO MUCH HYPE HYPE HYPE!!!
... Sorry, I had to get that out of my system.
Sonic Adventure is my first Sonic game and 1 of my first open world 3D games and the first game I played on my Dreamcast so it holds a lot of good memories for me. The 2nd game had too much boring stuff, the digging stands out as really bad. I'ld heartily embrace another open world Sonic game like the first 1, but please no extraneous nonsense.
Change it to Shenmue 3 and I'll be excited.
I thought they toted Unleashed as SA3.
Yay!!! I am jumping on the hype train for this one!!!
Sonic Adventure 1 was one of Sega's many self inflicted wounds that festered, became gangrenous and led to their demise in the console market.
They have much better IP that people would want rather than constantly flogging poor Sonic to death. A new Alex Kidd would be better. I'd rebuy Shenmue 1 and 2 to ensure a release of a 3rd game. Only if it was in HD with modern controls.
Would love if this happens.
@GazPlant completely different gameplay, level design, game mechanics, graphics, and a simple story of beat the bad guy, yeah, just throwing that out there, they name it sonic heroes because its sonic heroes, not sonic adventure 3
Take my money now Sega.
@Linkstrikesback I don't really know if you know what you're talking about, they were great games, the stories were over co,plicated and for SA1 Big the Cat was stupid, but it was a great game, with a few faults, and comparing any game from the past to the present isn't fair, and do say things like it wasn't good back then either, because really, it was
@MarioKenny1992 you're actually not alone in liking that game! But it may just be because I played it as a kid
I loved both Sonic Adventure games and if this is any true let's just hope it turns out to be a great game. After Sonic Colours and Generations I think it's possible!
With new Writers, voice actors, everything is built from the ground up, SA3 can prove itself worthy. Probably even better than the previous titles. Generations and Colors proved that Sonic has it's own stable game play style. It's only fair that the game will be solid.
My only concern is that if they mess up everything with the features of the other characters. Each character has their own abilities. What rumors say is that if you want some secrets found, or new paths to different levels unlocked, you gotta use them. Which is fine by me in any case. But if they overdo it...
I'm Personally ready for the ol' blue speedster to gain some form of his reputation back. Generations made sure to give him his proper return.
I still enjoy playing SA and SA2 on the Gamecube. I would love to see another adventure title that benefits from the abilities of modern systems.
Also, lighten up fellas. SEGA learned from '06. No need to look at every new Sonic game in such a bad light.
PS - Welcome to NL @TheEmerlLad!
@True_Hero Thank you!
Glad to be apart of the commentators
I watched my brother play the first 2 sonic adventures cause I was WAY too young to understand what to do. 2 years ago however I played sonic adventure 2 and I beat every level except the last and still haven't done it... XP
Yea, it's only a Sonic Adventure game if it has a Chao Garden.
Please?
If this is true I hope it's like the first Sonic Adventure(Sonic has the longest story, the other characters are optional. They explore other areas of Sonic's levels and show the same story from their point of view)
If this happens to be true, it should be set up like this:
1. Six playable characters
2. Either 2 storylines intertwining at some point, or some storyline that has all six on the same side - too many storylines, especially time travel-based ones gets too confusing
3. A central hub like Sonic Adventure or Sonic Unleashed
4. Power-up items for each character to upgrade their abilities to discover new paths and secrets
5. Better have a friggin' Chao Garden
Of course, that's my opinion.
Chao Garden pleasepleasepleasepleaseeee!!!
Sonic in 3D DOES NOT WORK!!!
Bah!
Why didn't SEGA learn from 06?
It had some great things going for it (all of which were drowned in a bottomless pool of glitch):
@CaptainMorpheus That I can agree upon. Sonic 06 wasn't the best. It was simply a released beta. If you can imagine if the game was actually cared for and finished properly, It can be assured that 'SA3' will be just that. If not so much better.
Sonic Adventure 3 may finally show it's head after all these years eh? I want to say I'm impressed, but all in all, I'm not really. Good for it being on Wii U if they want to release the game on a platform. But I'm not so sure about 3DS. Putting Sonic Generations on 3DS on the other hand was acceptable seeing as how it was never going to see the light of day on Wii like it did on PS3 and XBOX 360. But all in all, I hope this turns out to be good and not bad.
I'm done with Sonic, they never finished Sonic 4, it's ridicilous that the Wii only got the first part.
A chao garden, and multiple playable characters are the guidelines for a SA3, for me.
As long as it doesn't suck like the games before Sonic Colors and Generations, I'm sold. Wait, wait, wait, make sure there's only Tails, Knuckles and Sonic. We don't want Big, Amy, Cream or Charmy. No, just no. Blaze the Cat you can keep because her Japanese VA was awesome.
I want Polish. Sega is Constantly Releasing their games with Bugs. I'd rather wait then have problems with the Camera.
I bought Sonic Adventure & 2 for GameCube. I also Bought the 2006 Sonic for Xbox 360.
Still have Adventure 1&2 on Dreamcast . It would be nice to have a third game in the series. As long as it does not suck of course.
NOW ALL WE NEED SEGA IS......... SHENMUE 3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I thought it was a bit strange that Sega worked extremely hard to give Sonic a new image along with an entirely new direction with the Sonic Adventure series just to ditch the concept after two and a half games (counting Sonic Heroes.) If it is indeed an Adventure game, let's hope it stays true to its style by keeping a similar engine and soundtrack. Fumie Kumitani and Jun Senoue (Crush 40) definitely played a major role in making a compelling atmosphere for the series.
Oh, and I wonder if James is feeling the hype?
Well Sonic Unleashed's code name was also Sonic adventure 3 so this means nothing
Chao Garden or no buy
No mech shooting, fishing, or emerald hunting please.
I would have preferred a Colors 2 if we were getting a sequel.
The first two Sonic Adventure games were awesome, if this turns out good, we'll pretend that Sonic 2006 never existed. The fact that it never came to a Nintendo console should be a sign of that.
I've greatly enjoyed the 3D Sonic games, even more so than the 2D ones suprisingly so I'm excited that this next game will at the very least be a spiritual successor to the Sonic Adventure games
@retro_player_22 Indeed! That game still gives me nightmares (shakes)
While Sonic Adventure 1 was great and Sonic Adventure 2 was legendary (Chao included), naming the game Sonic Adventure 3 won't have meaning if Sega repeats the same mistakes made in Sonic 2006, Sonic Unleashed, etc. Poor story aside (which matters to me as I like good stories and despise terrible ones, I'm not that "story doesn't matter in games" guy), the gameplay in those games was terrible, and the camera was unforgivable, often snapping in place and forcing you to look at what you didn't need to see, and not letting you move the camera to see what you wanted to see. Sonic Adventure 2 had a almost completely player controlled camera, meaning the player decided what they wanted to look at, even if it was the wrong place you needed to look, which for some reason, Sega seems unwilling to put in newer Sonic games. The grinding aspects were toned down to the point of being movie watching, in Sonic Adventure 2 you had to balance on rails or you would slow down dramatically and fail to make jumps, after that the grinding in Sonic games was pretty much autopilot and it was "mash button to increase speed!".
I'll be all over this if it's anything like SA2.
I hope it haves a chao garden!!!
I forgot to mention I have Sonic hereos. Sega Made a Huge mistake with that Warehog game. people liked the day time levels but hated the Night time Stuff
will this have a delay too
I hope it follows the SA formula. Sonic Adventure was the perfect sonic game, with Generations and Adventure 2 Battle tied for 2nd.
y'know after all the false rumours and all the requests, I think they're crazy enough to actually do it.
One thing I didn't like about the 3D Sonic Games is that Sonic is the only Fast Character. well I had sonic 2, Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles for Genesis. Back then Knuckles Couldn't Jump as High as Sonic or Tails but he could Run Just as fast or Faster. Sonic and Tails can be going full speed but once they went off a ledge their top speed slowed down. Knuckles didn't do that. He didn't have to roll into a Ball to keep from slowing down when Running off a ledge.
I know Adventure 2 came with Shadow, and Hereos Came with that Purple Thing. I would of been happier being any character I want and being able to run as fast as Sonic.
Sonic the Hedgehog was the game that I liked on Genesis. it was exclusive it was the reason I had to buy a Sega Genesis even though I had Super Nintendo Much Longer. Third party games I preferred on SNES. I regretted buying Lion King and MKII for genesis. I had a friend who had the SNES version of Lion king and Another who had SNES version of MKII. Lion king on Genesis was so much harder. I preferred the graphics & sound on SNES.
No treasure hunting, shooting, fishing, or any gameplay different from Sonic's (like Sonic 3 & Knuckles with different abilities but same gameplay), multiple playable characters, no cheesy voice acting or stupid plots, a long and semi-difficult game, level layout like Genesis games with level design and exploration of Adventure games, and bring back the Adventure gameplay formula and you've got the perfect Sonic game. Oh yeah, and one more thing... CHAO... GARDEN!!!!!!!!
@gohanrage "that purple thing" actually made his debut in Knuckles Chaotix
@Onett "Oh, and I wonder if James is feeling the hype?"
Putting aside for a moment the fact that that this is just a rumour with no factual basis, as far as I recall James generally dislikes the Adventure games.
Yeahh!! Bring on Chao garden 2
That is what I spent the majority of my time on the second game in the series.
Bring on the chao and the shooting stages! Many people hated anything that wasn't Sonic or Shadow, but I love E-102's and Eggman's shooting stages. I'm sure it'll just be Sonic, though. I can dream.
May make sense you will be allowed to play multiple characters. I can't wait to play a new Sonic game! I am just a young gamer, so I don't know much about the Sonic Adventure Series.
Hey Sonic Adventure. Long time no see!
Chao!!!
I'd gladly welcome SA3, as long as Eggman is playable again.
I liked the Sonic Adventure games, but I will only buy a 3rd one if it's like the 2nd one with maybe some of the Heroes gameplay ideas, except updated in every way and done well this time.
@UnseatingKDawg
I think those six playable characters will be:
Sonic (duh)
Tails
Knuckles
Shadow
Rouge or Amy
Silver or Espio
And have 20 stages, as said, a hub like Sonic Adventure, updated Chao Garden, different abilities, yet same gameplay for each character, and I don't know if they'll either use the Adventure or Unleashed formula, multiple exits, but it would make much more sense if thy used the Adventure formula if it's titled "Sonic Adventure 3".
Yes, please.
Sonic gameplay only, multiple characters (that play like S3&K), multiple paths, and the Colors composers please (the OST for that was boss) and a Crush 40 theme is fine with me.
Not alternate gameplay, though. They've all been terrible.
I'm excited, but also pretty worried they would screw it up. I think Sega's learned from some of their past mistakes, so I'll give 'em a chance. Certainly not saying 'no' to this.
I love Sonic Adventure DX and Sonic Adventure 2: Battle to death! I think SA2 was especially LEGENDARY (though a hub world like in SA would have been cool too in my opinion, at least they kept Chao Garden). If this is true about a SA3, I will have a fan-like heart attack of joy (yes, it's possible) and I will pre-order and buy it ASAP. Heck, I'd do that even if it isn't gonna be SA3~ I also beg for an HD Chao Garden for it and one for 3DS if possible. Heck, maybe have something for Chao transfer between Wii U and 3DS too! I can't wait to hear more!!~ YES!! WOO-HOO! YAY!!~ XD
Oh god yes! SA2 is without a doubt my favorite platformer and one of my favorite games period, SA1 is up there too. I liked colors and adored generations, but this is the game I've been waiting for for years. I really hope it turns out to be Adventure 3. And they better bring back the Chao Garden dammit!
YESSSSSSSSSSS WE'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS TITLE FOR YEARSSSSSSSSSSSSS ALL OF US SONIC FANS THOUGHT IT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think the Sonic games should be layed out more like New Super Mario Bros.
I just want solid details already! Just give me a date, and you get $100 from me, $60 for the PS3 version, $40 for the 3DS.
At least we can still count on Sega to support the Wii U.
Back on topic, I've only just started liking Sonic, but of what I know a Sonic Adventure 3 sounds like it would be cool.
@K1LLEGAL The Chao Garden would interact with 3DS right? I mean on the original, you used the VMU and in the remake for Gamecube it used the GBA (actually the first gamecube game to connect to GBA if I recall correctly). So it makes sense there would be a 3DS app called "chao garden" or something to go with the game.
@Knuckles Get the Wii U version rather than PS3 as it will interact with 3DS version for Chao garden lol. Or do PS3 and Vita (if it even comes to Vita, which many games seem not to).
It seems like Sega really has begun to realize exactly what a good Sonic game is like. The last few releases have been some of the best in the series and they keep getting better. Sure hope this is true!
Yes I would want that. If they could have perfected the camera (time/effort could have been taken away from some of the extraneous characters, though I did like the mixed perspectives of the story) - SA would have been pretty much perfect. Love that game. SA2 had an awesome concept too - though I wish they had kept tails out of the eggwalker thing.
I don't know they tried to make Sonic 06 SA3 and look at it now?
Sonic Adventure games were one of the few good 3D sonic games ever released. I am really hoping Sega doesn't mess this up but I'm not getting my hopes to high. :
No chao garden, no deal. Also someone get a new VA for tails he still sounds like a girl, not a little boy.
Love sonic adventure series, my favorite sonic games ever! And ya Chao gardens should be on this new one too
I rather have something like Colors, but we will wait and see!
I'd rather have something like Generations, but there's nothing wrong with an Adventure-style game as long as they do something better with the characters that aren't Sonic.
CHAO.
CHAO CHAO CHAO CHAO CHAO.
Hmmmm.... 2D and 3D level formats sounds like sonic generations. I wonder if it's Sonic Generations 2. NAH!
I hate this speculation and rumors! I want sega to announce a sonic game instead of getting my hopes up for sa3
Sonic Adventure 3 was Sonic Heroes. :/
@speedyExpertist Nope, it wasn't SA3, why do you think the title's Sonic Heroes? Even if it was a little similar to SA1 and SA2 with the various characters, it was never made as SA3.~
I honestly don't understand the stupidity of people anymore. The Sega Dreamcast was the best console of all time and was the most advanced of it's time. It brought on a whole new era of gaming, with being able to access the internet and get games online (As well as DLC). It marked the new beginning to gaming and graphics. It was the first console to have internet access and DLC, as well as the best graphics of it's time by far. The Dreamcast had so much potential, yet was one of the most underrated systems of all time. Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 made the Dreamcast's legacy, as well as the Power Stone games. Sega would have completely owned every gaming console if the Play-Station 2 didn't rip it out of the market. I loved how memory cards were placed in the controllers with neat little visuals, no other console had the uniqueness that the dreamcast presented. I just do not understand how people are so idiotic to piss themselves over the PS2, there was nothing unique about it (Besides being able to play DvD's, but that's it!). If Dreamcast just had a few more years to show off it's large package, it would have ripped sony right off the market. The Play station is a failure in my opinion. Their controllers are a mess and the systems look plain and , just looks like a DVD player to be honest. The first PS I will give was okay, but they shouldn't have ripped Sega out of the console making business. If Sega can pull together everything it's learned from the crap it's been making for the past 9 years (Glitches, crappy storyline, ect.). Sonic Adventure 3 can be a turning point in Sega's future. Why they got rid of the concept of Chaos is beyond me, I spent at least 85% of the game in the Chao Gardens raising my Chao. And for those of you who even consider Sonic heros/Unleashed/'06 to be a Sonic Adventure 3...
@speedyExpertist No, it was a game made by Sega when they were wasted out of their mind.
Nearly 3 months later... still no new Sonic announcement.
Well, this "Sonic Adventure 3" ended up being Sonic Lost World. Face it guys, SA3 is NEVER coming.
