Forget for a moment that Kid Icarus: Uprising is one of the best displays yet of the 3DS console's stereoscopic screen, and imagine it existing in an altogether simpler time: the 1990s. Talented pixel artist jmatchead (via Pixel Art Guild) has done just that, creating two SNES-style illustrations of Pit's new adventure.
Both images capture the movement and pastel palette of Project Sora's 3DS title and look pretty excellent in the process. So much so, in fact, we almost wish Pit had stayed in two dimensions.

When i played the 3D Classic and OMaM i couldn't help but think how amazing a new 2D platforming Kid Icarus with SNES style graphics could be. And while i'd rather see side- edit: and vertical-scrolling flying sections in it this looks amazing. Make it happen, Nintendo!
Wow that actually looks really fun.
Sorry, but there's a difference between pixellated pics and SNES-style pics and those two (while looking neat), look NOTHING like an SNES game would.
Looks pretty cool.
I wouldn't mind them making a new 2D Kid Icarus, as long as it's as well as more 3D games, not instead of (kind of like with Mario).
Uprising was just too amazing for them not to make another like it!
That actually looks really good.
I wish this was a real game now.
Those look pretty cool, but only if it kept the funny dialogue.
It looks more like a GBA game. Not a SNES game.
I wish Pit had stayed in two dimensions, and indeed stayed closer to his original NES gameplay routes, because I don't really like the new game on 3DS.
@RedBlueSpot
There's a difference?
The new 3DS game is awesome and this looks pretty cool. I do agree though, kind of looks GBA than SNES - which is cool anyway.
the first screen, with the reaper, look like snes. the second one...maybe more gba.
still, they look like genuine nintendo games screenshots, its amazing. wish there was a kid icarus on snes back in the days...
Neat!
Please make this a reality!!
hmm, I guess I'll be the person who doesn't care much for it I guess? I love where they took Kid Icarus, and even though I love the NES original, I don't want to go back to 2D Kid Icarus
That looks actually better than KIU.
You know you can make this game a reality Nintendo. All you have to do is make it ON THE eShop!
Looks pretty cool, I think that somehow Nintendo could do something with 2D. The question it- Will they?
Wow. That's. Wow.
That isn´t SNES graphics. It is like a GBA game but with lower quality.
Meh, I don't think so. There is way too much detail for pixels
Nintendo should totally make a Wiiware game like this!
@LztheBlehBird #20
The pixels are a little on the small side, but that is generally how it would look
Second picture needs more Mode 7 power.
Looks fantastic !!!
I cant help but think that the flying parts would have been perfect to show off the SNES Mode 7 capabilities.
...WHY DO YOU HATE KID ICARUS NINTENDO!?! LOOK AT WHAT YOU COULD HAVE DONE! WHY DIDN'T YOU MAKE THIS A REALITY
Sorry about that. I really like Kid Icarus
I actually wish they would have made this instead of the current game.
As great as those screenshots look, they more resemble Game Boy Advance (or even really good looking Game Boy Color) visuals than they do SNES visuals, imo
thats def not SNES graphics. No Nintendo Seal for you!!!
This is awesome! I really do wonder what Pit's games would look like if he appeared in some other older consoles. Especially the Nintendo 64
The impression I'm getting from these comments is that some people seem to think that the GBA is less powerful than the SNES when its the other way around. The SNES has better quality sound than the GBA but overall the GBA is the more powerful system.
1. Learn how to code
2. Get permission from jmatchead to use these as screenshots
3. Make a new Kid Icarus game out of this concept
4. Finish it
5. UNLEASH AWESOME
In the first picture you can see Pit is doing a dash, this would mean that if this game would have been real, it would have more dynamic gameplay than the original 2D gameplay. Which makes me even more psyched for a new 2D Kid icarus game.
Little too pixelated for a SNES game. Super NES was more capable than this, go back and look at Mega Man X's sprite. To be fair though, this looks more like early SNES, Castlevania IV-ish, Simon Belmont's sprite wasn't exactly the greatest.
I would say, yeah, it does resemble more of a GBA feel, than a SNes one. I think that vibe is getting put off/picked up by the colors, & the fact that the resolution looks like it was optimized/designed for a smaller screen, & blown up/stretch. I think one of the tricks of the SNes was that devs made the sprites large as their normal size, & used the hardware to scale the images, that way it wouldn't look like the images had been stretched. Whereas on some(not all) GBA games, it's easy to tell they were designed w/ a low resolution in mind. Still cool, anyway!
I've always hoped Kid Icarus would've eventually become a Symphony of the Night esque game, with hand drawn 2D sprites, and open world that expands as your abilities do, and a completely customizable weapons/armor system. Sadly, it didn't turn out that way.
Okay, I'm going to say it, hate me if you like. It looks terrible. You can't even see what the blurry white-gray-ish and yellow cloud is, unless you know that it's Pit. I would have guessed on some animal I think, if I hadn't seen anything from Kid Icarus before. I love the new 3DS game though, and I think that is possibly one of the best looking games for 3DS.
i hope that they don't do it but here's the question. how would multiplayer online workout
i kinda agree with phle
@Phle #38
If I didn't know what Did Icarus was, I would have guessed that it was just an angel, or maybe just a human because of the presence of arms and legs. I then would have noticed the arrow/beam that was coming from him and realized that the brown and yellow thing in his hand is a bow. His whole face being brown tells me that his head is down and seeing as how I already know what color his skin is, I would have identified the yellow ring on his head to be a head band. Next I notice the white curve behind him, it's not part of a cloud since the clouds are yellow, and then I see that there is another one above his head, and that with the fact that he is in the sky, I put together that they are wings and he is an angel (I might also assume the head band to be a wreath since I now know he is an angel).
Cool!
@grimbldoo Yes, but the fact that you have to think for more than five seconds really proves my point. But I do admit that I didn't include the brown spots on the cloud in my description. By the way, how can you see it's a "he"?
The SNES resolution is 256x224. This image is blown up to 200%, so scaling it back down to normal size makes this image 212x177. That's probably why this looks off to people, or like @RedBlueSpot said; it looks closer to a GBA game.
Sometimes dreams come true, jmatchead worked with Flip Industries to make Super Kid Icarus for the web!!! Check it out
