Nintendo's Wii U is the company's new console with HD support, and to prove it we've got 720p screenshots of one of the games on display at this year's E3, a project Nintendo is calling New Super Mario Bros. Mii.
As you can probably guess, the game is similar to New Super Mario Bros. Wii with one important exception: players can use their Mii characters alongside Mario, Luigi and Toad players.
Nintendo's not claiming this is a game at the moment, it's just using it to show off the potential for Wii Remote and Wii U controller players to play alongside each other. It does look nice, though.

Frack me , I really hope that turns out to be an actual game. That would be aces....
All I need is my Mii with a white shirt, black overalls, and black cap. Sold Nintendo, SOLD!
$5 says this will be a full retail game someday. Place your bets now!
Mario... Your looking better than ever!
Just needs a better title than New Super Mario Bros Wii U Mii Tu Goo Goo Ga Joob.
@warioswoods: hahaha, i can see them naming the next handheld the 'Mii Tu', especially if it has some kind of interconnectivity going with the home console line at that point :3
If this does turn out to be an actual game, I doubt I'd play as a mii.
I wish they had included this feature in the original...
I dislike how Mii's look so I could do without. I'd rather just play as Mario but for multiplayer it makes sense.
Honestly graphic wise... it still looks the same to me...
@11
That's because the screenshots are 720p, not 1080p!
You mean this game wasn't announced, it was just like a tech demo? Happy about everything today but this. I thought ages ago it was announced they were working on a Super Mario side scroller for 3DS. Then it turned out it was ANOTHER 3D Mario. And now even this isn't an official game? Just something that might or might not become a game? What's with the discrimination against 2D Mario in favor of 3D? Especially when apparently these side scrollers sell better? Is this game something we should expect later on, or is this more side scrolling Mario vaporware? Sorry to rant, but I've waited so long to hear of another Mario side scroller, especially when they recently returned after an absence of some 15 or so years. And to hear this isn't an official game is aggravating.
Looking good but it looks like the Wii version...
nice captions on the pics
I was just about to say it but 15 beat me to it, lol.
Doesn't look any better then the wii version. And if the mii's are the only new addition it also isn't very creative. In my opinion New Super Mario brothers never needed a sequel, though I liked the sequel a little better. So if this turns out to be fun I might pick it up someday.
But to me this game really doesn't show the strenght of the wii u (graphical wise) at all.
"You mean this game wasn't announced, it was just like a tech demo?"
I am 500% sure this is a real game. Think about it: New Super Mario bros wii sold AMAZINGLY!!
the wii u is sick
@mariofanatic128: Yeah, I can't image many people would. It seems kind of pointless, unless you can make a Mii that looks more like Mario than Mario.
@Betelgeuse agreed, im not a fan of 3d mario
This should've been done before in NSMBWii.
Hope this turns real, though.
Playing as yourself in a platformer? And a Mario platformer, at that? Who can honestly say they've never thought of/wanted to do this? I'm going to be all over this when it releases...
This won't turn out to be just a mere tech demo, not unless Nintendo wants to miss out on some mega-bucks...
Also, a cool feature that Nintendo should implement is full customization: first off, have the Miis wear caps; secondly, let people pick the colors of their Mii's outfit (overalls, shirt and cap); and lastly, make it so people can personalize the initial on the caps to match their own. My Mii decked out in black overalls and a green shirt and cap with the letter 'F' emblazoned on it would be too awesome for words...
Sweet!!
I hope that isn't the final name... Say, how about some Donkey Kong Country Returns Backgrounds? In HD!
the graphics look like theyre on the wii. Plus, i wont get this game cuz it is just the same gameplay with (probably) new levels and miis.
After that amazing trailer for Super Mario 3DS, this came across as pretty underwhelming.
Looks pretty cool.
Yeah, the graphics bore me. I might get it but definitely not my top priority.
This should just be a new Wii game since it all ready looks the part.
Nice to see that it runs in 1080p, but if you really want to see what it can do, look up the Zelda HD demo. I'm hoping this one stays as a tech demo though becasue it doesn't seem like anything new, except for the Miis, which to be honest I couldn't care less about.
It's pretty much certain they will make this, and I can't wait. NSMBW was one of my favourite games for the Wii. I wouldn't care if it's just more of the same, I'd welcome it with open arms.
Are you people insane? It looks wayyyy better than the Wii version. It's so sharp...
@27
Yeah. Mario 3DS appears to have a lot of 2D sections, so why is this needed?
sweet
bump for the pic subtitle.
This'll sound weird, but I get the strange feeling that this will be the game to score a Nintendo fan a girlfriend. It looks like the perfect ice breaking game. And I'm not really sure why. Maybe it's just because Wii U happens to be super awesome.
@JimmyWhale It might be weird, but I met my previous girlfriend playing New Super Mario Bros Wii. She always knew exactly when I wanted to pound ground. I thought we could go on like that forever. Then one day we found all the star coins and we both knew it was over. Take my advice, Mario is nothing to base a serious relationship on.
One last complaint: I saw on IGN that they where playing the game on a television and at the same time you saw the game on the wii u controller. I know that the wii u controller can be used for special things, and that it can take over when someone wants to see something else on television. But what's the purpose of displaying the exact same game on the controller, while you only look at the television? I hope Nintendo only did it this way so journalists at E3 could compare it all the time, but if they do it this way in the final version, it will only eat your batteries while not enhancing the game at all!
If this is going to be a full retail game, I hope there will be much more than just the Miis. They should bring back NSMB DS's VS mode, save replays of levels, and have DLC.
