Revealed as part of Nintendo's E3 2021 Direct presentation, the Game & Watch: The Legend of Zelda handheld is a cute little device that let's you play three classic Zelda games on a retro-styled Game & Watch system similar to the Super Mario Bros. version which launched last year.
Launching on 12th November as a tribute to the action-adventure series' 35th anniversary, the full games included on this gorgeous little device are:
- The original NES Legend of Zelda
- Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
- Game Boy's The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
Both the English and Japanese versions of these classics are playable, and the Game & Watch title Vermin is also included, now with Link in the starring role. The handheld also features a Zelda-themed alarm clock function with various Easter Eggs to discover.

I'm impatiently waiting for the NA pre-order pages as we speak. The black Game & Watch packaging looks sleek and it comes with three games that have triple the content of any of the NES Mario games.
$50 would honestly be a fair price in my eyes.
You REALLY should include Canada!
The Switch Pro in all it's glory.
Nintendo used FOMO! It’s super effective!
It's cute that they have included the original 1993 version of Link's Awakening, but why not the GBC version as well?! It would be under 1MB for crying out loud.
I was annoyed that the Super Mario Land games weren't included with the Super Mario one either (which I think would have been better suited for quick sessions).
Any chance this use a better cpu than the Mario G&W?
@nessisonett Haha so true. They made so many of the Mario one though... isn't it still widely available even now?
From all the possible Zelda 35th collections we could get today why this... just why
@nocdaes It was discontinued on the same day as everything else, so being able to still buy it on Amazon probably speaks to a lack of uptake.
I'm sorry, but I can't think why this is a good idea or why anyone wouldn'thave anything better to buy. I would have jumped at a compilation on switch of 2 or 3 zelda titles like majoras mask etc
It'll go nicely with the Mario Game and Watch, but also like that one, I doubt I will actually use the Zelda one. I wonder if it will have the same error with languages as well.
Didnt like how they showed Skyward then said "we havnt been working on ang other zelda titles for the anniversay but hey, have this game and watch" such a missed opportunity and imo a slap in the face of every zelda fan. It amazes me how a company can be so amazing yet so out of touch with what people actually want and ask for.
Why not just sell the ROMs on Nintendo switch it is a handheld device after all
purposefully skipped the SMB G&W because of this! now this looks really worth it Zelda II alone is going to give me lots of playtime!
@Controller-Drift I'm actually pretty excited for this. Given how many times I'vd beaten the games (all of them) It's fun to have something a little different for a change
@Kidfunkadelic83 I asked for this. I wanted the game and watch. I hope they keep making them. They are in touch with my requests.
I was only looking for Zelda 1 & 2, Link's Awakening was a really neat surprise.
This is a neat collector's item, but them doing this just makes me have to ask:
Where is the Game Boy+GBA mini? Clearly it wouldn't be hard for them to release such a thing, looking at this and the other Game and Watch collectible.
To be honest, I'd prefer a collection of Game Boy and GBA games on NSO on Switch, but a Game Boy+GBA mini console would also be super cool.
@Would_you_kindly : The GB/GBC Link's Awakening ROMs should have been included with the remake. Hell, I think they should almost always include the original game where remakes are concerned.
@Silly_G I'll second this.
@Silly_G would've been nice to get super mario all stars as a bonus with 3d all stars
Don’t get me wrong, this is cool, but these games are, and have been, easily available for people who wanted to play them.
If this is all they are doing for the 35th anniversary… I think that’s pretty weak.
To me, the original Zelda is still an amazing game and I like this as a little standalone collectible. Obviously there are many better ways to play, but if you are going to use it as a trinket to help personalize a space, I'm liking the actually-playable games, lately.
The Zelda Game & Watch is fine. I think some people are expecting too much because of all the stuff they did for the Super Mario 35th Anniversary. That is Nintendo’s mascot, and I wouldn’t expect a big celebration for every single milestone of all Nintendo properties.
@Would_you_kindly : And Super Mario Galaxy 2 as well. I'd raise no objection to buying it separately if given the option, but Nintendo must have other plans up their sleeve.
@Franklin
Mario had 3 including the Ball game.
@XBontendo im not saying that it shouldnt have been made and imo its actually pretty neat. I will grab one for sure as never played the 1st 2 zeldas and its a cool little collectable piece. I just think so much more should have and could have been done to celebrate this wonderful franchise.
@MrGrim
What were the other 2?
@Franklin
SMB 1 and Lost Levels.
I think I'll buy this one on Amazon. I quickly preordered the first, but seeing as they're still in stores I know I can wait a bit. I'm excited about this little thing though! I wouldn't even be against a Game and Watch collection pack on a Game and Watch!
@MrGrim
oh right.
@EVIL-C It's available on Best Buy Canada now, one order per household.
@Toy_Link lol
Interestingly there are calls for a dock firmware update within the Switch firmware itself which means we are likely getting a new dock that does DLSS upscaling rather than a switch pro, the current dock has no firmware. With the current chip shortage it is not likely that a more powerful system will release until next gen, at best a better screen and battery with the same Mariko chipset will come out.
@Kirigirisu Thank you! Just got one. Much appreciated.
I think these things are nice collectors items I was thinking of buying the Mario one but this Zelda one is much more up my alley.
I own most, if not all, Zelda games (Oracle games not physical and not counting CDi) and all 3 Hyrule coffee table books, the ones in the red green and blue.
I think I will add this to my meager Zelda Collection as I love portable gaming systems and the Adventures of Link and Link's Awakening are very special games to me.
❗I wonder if the scalpers have learnt their lesson from hoarding all the SMB G&Ws and WONT rush out to buy ALL the LOZ G&Ws as the SMB ones are STILL available?
I'm simply going to buy mine from Argos...
@Would_you_kindly 2 of them are already on the Switch.
It's a nice little item. I think Nintendo are probably spread a bit too thin to focus on something bigger.
@XBontendo can't argue with that. Maybe I'm just a little disappointed about not being able to play Wind Waker again as I haven't since the GC days, but happy for the rest
It's nice, but I'd rather just have more Zelda games available on my Switch, of I had the choice.
If I can find it in Argentina, I'll absolutely get this. I'm a big Zelda nerd and this has at least two of my favorite games in it: the original Zelda and Link's Awakening. (I say "at least" because Zelda II is one of the few mainline entries I haven't tried yet.) I played both on the Switch last year, but with Link's Awakening I've only played the remake. Which was great, but looking at screenshots of the original, I've always felt something was lost in the translation. Not because I didn't have fun with the remake (clearly, I did) but, in comparison to the other 2D Zeldas I was trying out at the same time (the 1986 original and A Link to the Past), the Link's Awakening remake felt slower, less responsive, somewhat clumsier. The diorama visuals are beautiful, but they impact the gameplay, I feel.
Not interested at all
I may get this but they seriously are hard to play with the button configuration. Also where in the hell is the stand? The Mario GW would be great if it had the stand but it just lays flat like a turd. I still like it but $50 is hard to deal with.
The funny thing is that the Mario G+W console was discontinued a couple months ago yet that device AND Mario 3D Allstars is still being sold at my local Target because the stock hasn’t run out yet… lol
@Low_ink
Gamestop has a listing now as well as Bestbuy.
I just preordered it.
Got it. The OG Zelda is probably my favorite NES game outside the collective Mega Mens.
Thanks for the Best Buy link!
@Silly_G probably because of the DX version’s Gameboy printer support and having to deal with error messages when you try to print to something that’s not there. Having the original makes it seem more “complete” and more of a tight and solid package overall I think.
Someone will hack it and install the DX version I’m sure hah
@Zidentia
I was thinking the same thinking, regarding the button configuration. Other than nostalgia purposes (I'm assuming the buttons were positioned like that for all past Game & Watch devices?), why on earth are the buttons all the way at the bottom? I've already pre-ordered this - really just because it has the original GB Link's Awakening, which isn't officially available otherwise on any recent consoles - but that button positioning might very well make me decide to cancel it at some point...
Edit: Actually, I was just looking back at photos of the Mario Game & Watch from last year, to compare the button placement. The A and B buttons on the Zelda one are actually a little lower than the ones on the Mario one, seemingly to "make room" for the Start and Select buttons. In reality, those additional buttons could've just gone a little higher so that the A and B buttons could've at least stayed at the same level as the Mario one (still low, but at least not lower). I'd really like to have this for the original GB Link's Awakening, but man, that does not look very comfortable to use. >_<
@ChromaticDracula : Surely they could have excised that content as they did for the 3DS release.
@hakjie11 Ooh, aren't you SPECIAL!!!!
No one cares.
@Silly_G yeah id buy it as dlc aslong as it wasn't overpriced
I love the G&W, so any that they make I'll buy. It's a fun novelty, and owning a small collection of novelties I can actually play sounds amusing. They probably won't make many more of these, since there aren't many popular series with pre-90s anniversaries to celebrate (Metroid, PUNCH-OUT!!, Kid Icarus... ot happening). Maybe DK will happen someday, but I'm skeptical.
@hakjie11 Its probably for the best. “If once you start fighting The Dark Link, forever will he dominate your destiny.”
Don't hurry, the Mario one is still aviable for about 45 Euros.
Does it come with a strap so I can wear it as a watch?
eBay already has a few unit for sale at double the retail price I see... 😱
Also shocked to see how much original g&w units go for. I had them all except for spitball sparky and crystal climbers back around year 2000 and I needed some quick cash so gave them to my younger brother for £100 loan. When I could not repay him he sold them on at local game shop in Bournemouth and got £150 for the lot! A whole carrier bag of retro history sold and he thought he got a good deal as he made 50 quid🤬
Most of the boxed to some degree. If only I had a delorean now...
@Franklin and Zelda has a ball game too so that is 4 games.
For some reason I cannot place an order on the My Nintendo Store, it just comes up with payment failed, and it now won't allow me to re-attempt the order process because of how it enforces a 1 per customer limit.
I think it's due to how my debit card will expire between now and November release date, which is a pain.
Edit: Got it to work by placing an order on mobile, strangely now.
Anyone knows where/if we can pre-order in Europe? Portuguese My Nintendo Store doesn't have it.
This is our "Switch pro" for 2021.
Cute, cool, not for me
@RupeeClock I had exactly the same problem. Had to use another Credit Card that doesn't expire until 2023. Pain!
Have you had any issue with regards to delivery address? I tried to get it shipped somewhere other than my billing address, but it simply wouldn't except it. Nintendo have also removed the cancel order functionality from the UK store since the MyNintendo merge.
@sikthvash
I was ultimately able to place my order using the card that expires August, but had to do it on mobile.
The order is in their system now at least, so if payment complications do arise they should contact me about resolving them.
I didn't have any issues with the delivery address, as this time I was shipping to the same address as the billing address.
It does seem as though their new shopping system is a significant downgrade from before though, so many technical problems.
@Rocky2418
I have the Mario one and it cramps your hand to play. I still like it and the clock and other features are nice but it needs a stand and better button placement.
It’s now available on Amazon in the US too.
@MrGrim I was told that this year's Christmas is gonna be stripped down, so I decided to pre-order the thing on Amazon now. I figure if I do that, I can pay for it in advance, and think about paying for some subscription services through gift cards over time.
@nessisonett @nocdaes Everytime I go into my local Walmart they have a stack of the Mario ones in the glass case with the Switch games.
@Zidentia
That's what I was afraid of. That's a shame, but thanks for letting me know how it felt to you.
@YoshiAngemon
Yeah, I like to preorder on Amazon so I can have time to get some gift cards together to reduce the cost lol. Canceled my Best Buy order after seeing it on Amazon.
Gamestop is taking pre-orders for the US, but... will Gamestop even be around anymore by November?
I just knew they were gonna do a Zelda G&W! And yes I’m getting 2!
@Controller-Drift because it's the best.
If you're looking for a sweet display stand, I ordered one for the Super Mario 35th Game and Watch from these folks (https://rosecoloredgaming.com/). Maybe they'll make one specifically for this release
I normally don't go for these sorts of things, but I really want one of these. I want to ride my bike out to some secluded meadow and play Link's Awakening haha.
@Silly_G
I have the Mario one and it’s sealed in its packaging.
It’ll never get opened. One day it may be worth a chunk of change.
They are back on Amazon if interested..l
@thiz
If it’s like the Mario one, it should come with a USB cable. You likely already have an adapter laying around that you can use it with.
@sleepinglion oh no, what have you done to me?! Filling up a cart for payday. These stands look great!
@Ryu_Niiyama That's awesome! Saw one of their stands in a YouTube vid, really dug it and asked the content creator where it came from.
Pre-ordered mine. I purchased the mario g&w which, despite its flaws, I still pick up and play a lot. I would love to see Nintendo make a G&W compilation onto a single g&w unit.
A punch out anniversary edition would also be awesome (unlikely, but great to dream!).
I had seen an artist impression on what legend of Zelda g&w would look like whilst ppl were pre-order smb1 g&w.
I had always wanted a boxed version of links awakening on Gameboy. Yay Zelda on g&w, awesome. Can't wait to receive delivery update.
Thanks Nintendo.
Wish there could be a DMG Gameboy made official with updated speaker and screen. Even tho' I have a pocket, I'd like the original too.
At first I thought "Whoopee... a flipping microfibre cloth... thanks, Nintendo"... until I saw it. It's great!!! 😆
This would have been great in the early 00s. Its as if they saw the sales of the NES and SNES minis and was like be could totally get away with selling these systems with way less games if we wrap it in handheld nostalgia!
Seriously we are only getting a couple of games with this thing and besides Vermin they have been ported to hell and back.
I am uber nintendo fan and collector but I am not biting with this one. Only way I am getting this is if someone gifts it.
I had no interest in the Mario G&W, but this sounds great!
Seems impossible to get, and I can't say that I care enough to put in any effort to buy this as well. Not paying over retail for it either. I got the Mario Game and Watch and I thought it was a neat little thing but it's ultimately something that I never really use. These really have no value beyond a collectible novelty item.
I'm not too worried about this being a constantly sold out item. The Mario one is still being sold, on Amazon anyway. And although this one has a nice 3 games I won't procrastinate in getting one regardless.
@nessisonett What does FOMO mean?
@nessisonett still at my target and walmart
No, I'm good. I love all 3 of those games, but I own them all too.
Glad I got mine preordered
@Tempestryke Fear Of Missing Out
@nessisonett Thank you.
Anyone know if this is limited time like the Mario g&w?
The way I see it, availability can go one of two ways. Preordering is unnecessary because if the stock of the SMB one is anything to go by, it'll be readily available for a long, long time. I STILL see the SMB Game & Watch behind the glass in Walmart, it's been nearly a year at the time of writing. However. Perhaps Nintendo saw that supply far outweighed demand and will correspondingly limit the production of the Zelda one, making preorders a bit more sensible. In summary, I've accomplished nothing but rambling here ahahaha
Went into my local Walmart the other day and I guess they finally sold their remaining stock of the Mario ones from last year. Either that or sent them back to make room for the OLED Switch.
@Tasuki The Walmart I shop at still has a huge stack of them, surprised they aren't discounted yet to sell them.
@nocdaes yup, for close to €30 here
This thing even have a release date yet? Have a preorder since the announcement.
