Welcome to our complete story walkthrough of Super Mario RPG on Nintendo Switch and SNES.
Mario and Mallow have just defeated Belome, and now they’ve found themselves swept out of the Kero Sewers and into the Midas River. Midas River is mostly a minigame where you’re tasked with swimming around and collecting as many coins as possible.
This is our guide on Midas River, the best course to take, and how to collect as many coins as possible before reaching the end.
Midas River Walkthrough
When you get to Midas River, Toad somehow appears out of nowhere to deliver a tutorial. You can hear him out if you wish, but the controls are simple enough — use the control pad to swim left or right, press B to swim against the current, and avoid the traps. You'll need to collect as many coins as you can as you careen down the water...
Go down the waterfall and through a cave. At the first major fork in the road, take a left to collect a green coin, then take a right at the next fork in the road to get another green coin. After you make your way down the waterfall, you’ll land on a barrel and start the next minigame.
Toad will return for another tutorial. For this one, you’ll need to time your jumps to grab some more coins. Remember to watch out for fish – if they hit you, you’ll lose coins. This is a chaotic course, so don’t feel bad if you mess up a few times. Sometimes, you'll want to collide your barrel with the next one to change course, so keep an eye on the water ahead.
At the end of the course, you’ll land on a Toad who will tell you how many coins you have collected. If you have 60 coins, you'll be able to get a Frog Coin from him. If not, the Toad will store the coins for you for a later time.
You’ll also receive the Koopa Shell / NokNok Shell, which is actually a brand-new weapon for Mario with higher attack power. Equip it and save your progress. If you want to try the course again, talk to the Toad — it costs 30 coins a try, but it's a great place to get Frog Coins.
When you’re ready, step forward and enter Tadpole Pond, the next area of the game.
