One of the burning questions for many Pokémon fans picking up Pokémon: Let's Go! on Switch will be how they can acquire one of the franchise's most famous monsters in the game: the mysterious Mew.
Nintendo has been quite sneaky with this, as it has essentially locked Mew behind a paywall - to get the monster, you have to buy a Poké Ball Plus accessory.
Unlocking Mew in the game is easy; simply connect the Poké Ball Plus as a controller and open the in-game menu with the 'B' button. Navigate to Communication and then Mystery Gift. You should see an option that says 'Get with a Poké Ball Plus'. Select this, and the game will download your Mew from the Poké Ball Plus into your main game (you'll need internet access to do this).
There's something to note here; Mew can only be downloaded from the Poké Ball Plus once. If you borrow a friend's Poké Ball Plus or buy one second-hand - and Mew has already been downloaded from said device - then you won't be able to get the monster. Be wary of purchasing Poké Ball Plus accessories that have been opened and used with the game already, or are being sold second-hand. This is effectively like a DLC code included with a boxed game; it's a one-use deal.
Compare that to amiibo, which have similar content-unlocking qualities but can be used as many times as you like and it's rather annoying, but understandable; if Mew could be unlocked multiple times using the same Poké Ball Plus, players could 'farm' the character and trade it with other people.
It's also worth pointing out that you won't be able to transfer a Mew caught in Pokémon GO to Pokémon: Let's Go. Here's the official statement on this:
Please note that you will not be able to bring a Mew caught in Pokémon GO into Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let's Go, Eevee! The ability to claim your gift of Mew may be discontinued at some point after the initial sales period of the Poké Ball Plus.
So there you have it; that's currently the only way that you can obtain Mew in the game. It's worth noting that you can also obtain Mystery Gifts via codes or even the internet, so Nintendo may choose to make Mew available via other means in the future.

Pay to play, on a paid game... nonetheless I'm still excited
OMG, TOMORROW!!!!!
The game is sooooo boring, I'm glad that canceled preorder, will wait for a true Pokémon title. Also, this Pokeball is overpriced, Pro Controller's cost is just little bigger but what's the difference!
I'm on the fence with the poke ball plus. I do want Mew, but i don't want to drop 50 on the poke ball plus. It still is pretty neat though despite the price
I currently have one completely broken joy con so spending that kind of money on a controller that only works for one (technically 2) game is just a little crazy for me. I don't really care about getting Mew the game seems like it will already be fairly low difficulty and Mew would just break the game from the start.
Awful to lock the game to the original 151 but then lock the final one behind an additional £40 purchase on top of the full priced game. Still hoping to enjoy it but these business practices are not good at all.
Back in the day you had to go to toys r us to get mew
I already planned on buying the pokeball plus but honestly that’s just plain dirty to make people buy it if they want the Pokémon
Nope won't cost me anything because I got Mew ages ago in Pokémon GO, transfer that and done.
@oji
Huh, didn't know that you played it. Cool.
@Rayquaza2510 read near the end of the article
@Rayquaza2510 you thought
Looking forward to this, almost time.
@oji
If you cancelled your preorder how would you know it’s boring?!!
Game leaked a few days ago. He's not wrong, it's boring.
Guide: How To Purchase Mew In Pokémon: Let's Go On Nintendo Switch
Fixed that for ya.
Back in my day when a fella talked about "unlockin'" a character in a video game they meant just that, play until you unlock a locked character. Mew ain't locked, he's sitting on a store shelf waiting to be purchased like Magilla Gorilla.
@bignrules I have the game since yesterday and damn it Nintendo...
I can transfer ANY 1st gen Pokémon to the game except Mew, that's just rude...
Tried this few minutes ago
"Mew can only be downloaded from the Poké Ball Plus once."
Important question.
My kids and I will be sharing Eevee since we were told unlike previous Pokemon games we could share one game across multiple accounts. So if Santa did bring us a Pokeball Plus for Christmas only 1 of us could unlock Mew in our game or will it be shared across all accounts on the Switch?
I've never played a real Pokemon game before, just the free ones - Go, World, Trozie etc - so I don't care about Mew, but my 2 sons probably would.
At least it's better then how you got Mew in the original games at first. You had to win it in a contest and send your cartridge to the magazine running it.
@Rodan2000,
I have the second Switch for a homebrew where I also test piracy copies before I decide to buy or not something (demos are so rare now, sadly). And this Pokémon definitely don't worth my time.
Haha, literally just read this on the side of the box.
Pretty cool...albeit a little sneaky.
Well I got both games & 2 pokeball plys controllers arriving tomorrow, so I’m all set.
@jswhitfield8 Or option 3, pass.
Or since it's Nitnedo - Option 4 - we all wind up sharing the same save file across all accounts like w/ SSB4 on the Wii U. (I'm taking that to the grave.)
I was thinking about having my mom pick this up for 1 or both of the kids, she's always buying them Pokemon stuff every year, games, puzzles, clothes, cards, so it's to be expected, but maybe we'll pass. Amazon is having some really good deals on a few $30 card box sets for $12-$15 so maybe we'll just get a bunch of those instead.
If I was gonna buy a controller that only works for one game it would be the smash gamecube controller. If I had kids the pokeball would be more appealing. As a single 30 yr old man I think it would be a little weird personally.
But hey if it gives you enjoyment go for it.
No, you don't have to get the poke ball plus. You can also get one in pokemon go, which is time consuming but also free.
"WAHHHHH of the day" material here.
I will be getting the Pokeball Plus when I get my second Switch (getting the Let’s Go Console bundle). But that’s it. My kids and I will just share the Pokeball Plus but Mew is mine.
Sneaky but maybe not clever. The extra $$ is currently what’s stopping me from buying the game...
@Gravitron thats the same reason i think motion controls are stupid so ill be playing this in handheld only cause im not using motion controls stupid they dont add pro controller support
Mew my fave it was a done deal when I found out 😂
@Ashunera84 But you can't transfer that said Mew to Pokemon Let's Go Eevee. So that method you just pointed out is pointless in this situation.
Still beats how they did mystical Pokemons in the old days (aka 2000s). I remembered Celebi being exclusive only in Japan with a cable to connect to your phone in gold & silver and Jirachi being part of a pre-order Pokemon Colosseum bonus disc for Ruby and Sapphire. Although you could use the disc multiple times for different games so not exactly the same (also a gamecube and gba-gc cable). Also NY Pokemon Center.
I do wonder if each Mew is different or the same since mines have a sassy nature.
I had heard no online so I can't just take one from my Gen 6 games (through a smaller paywall of Bank).
@ultraraichu That was actually Crystal which had the Mobile thing. In the reverse direction, the Odd Egg was also part of that but unlocked for the west. Battle Tower was also locked behind that in the Japanese version as well.
@KingMike I stand corrected. I knew my memory would be off on something. Thinking back I did remember the Battle Tower, so it make sense.
Not being able to transfer Mew from Go to Let's Go is pretty crappy.
@MsJubilee I see. Still, waaah of the day.
Couldn't get Mew in the original without spending money on going to a promotion or a cheat device, either (until someone figured out the fly glitch many years later). Most mythicals have been that way until very recently.
There's no content you're missing, no additional rewards for having one, every pokedex ever has always been considered complete without Mythicals. Having one doesn't make the game any easier really.
This is crying for the sake of crying.
Hurry up and deliver my pokeball Walmart
@Ashunera84 "There's no content you're missing," Mew is behind a paywall,whether you like it or not. That's content, Mew isn't just some dumb cosmetic item, it's a pokemon that you can train and use.
Getting my mew tomorrow!
I can't wait to play it in a few hours! That said, I can't believe they didn't support this with any Amiibos...
@MsJubilee
But that's not really saying much.
Almost every video game released nowadays has at least some content that requires additional spending/action/purchase requirement/etc, be it retailer exclusive missions, preorder bonuses or good old fashioned DLC.
It's almost always negligible to the core experience, but ever so slightly enticing enough to pursuade your financial decision making.
So ya. There's "content you're missing". Sure. As there is with just about every video game under the sun. Either be pursuaded and buy it, or don't and just enjoy the full breadth of core content.
Me? I wasn't pursuaded. I can do without 1 extra special Pokémon. I'll save my extra $40 from that Pokeball and put it toward Civilization VI. But if somebody is a diehard fan with obsessive compulsive disorder and feels that because a few extra digital bytes exist they MUST own them, because they must own EVERY SINGE BYTE of information ever created for said game, then more power to em. Knock yourselves out. Just don't be surprised when your wallet gets knocked out in the process. Every last byte is gonna cost you every last dollar. Imo, better to not go all fanatic with the "must own every byte" mantra. Better for your long term psychological health (and finances).
Nintendo will be Nintendo. I’m confident they will release Mew later on as a free gift/DLC/event Pokémon, they’re just trying to profit off of people who want to be first. Sadly, I’ll be giving into this ploy because I really want the controller lol. I guess Mew is a nice little bonus though.
@rjejr back in the day you had to get it via irl event or stumble upon the glitch by accedient, like I did with the Pokemon yellow I got for Christmas the year it came out. didn't know what exactly I did to trigger the glitch til someone else figured it out years later. I really don't care about this happening to this spin off, but game freak better not make the mistake of pulling this stunt on next year's main series game. A lot of us spent years gathering the event pokemon we have, especially in the case of shiny event pokemon which are fairly scarce especially outside of Japan.
Regardless paywall dlc is something that should never have existed to begin with.
Pokemon Go using smartphone to send as gift mew.
@oji This game is the exact same like earlier Pokémon games lol. Just that you have to use motion controls to catch Pokémon. That's the only difference here.
This really bugged me. I came close to passing on the game entirely because of it, but ultimately I've decided to just trade someone for a mew to beat the trainer and then trade it back. Sooner or later they'll give one out in mystery gift again. Still, being unable to import pokemon through bank is really crappy. Looking forward to the real gen 8 in 2019, but I'll treat this as a more casual game for now.
@rjejr Only one account will get Mew. It won't be shared between all players on the console, as each save file will need it's own PBP to get Mew.
@NOELQUEZON You can't do that - did you read the article?
Anyone else remember times when Pokemon remakes used to give hardware gimmicks for free?
@Jeronan
It's not, the difficulty is so low that the gameplay is plain & bore, also as you said catching now is just throwing a 'pokeball'. The only advancement is a better visuals/audio, I found the Pokémon Yellow version superior in all other aspects. And any 3DS version is miles ahead of this lazy title.
Freaking cash grab, but annyway will get it
I’m glad I didn’t try hard reset as we only get one Mew. I tried to reset as mine is a Relaxed nature but considering the casual nature of the game I guess it doesn’t matter. Does anyone know if changing the Nature of the day from that lady in Celadon could’ve changed Mew’s nature to something I wanted?
Step 1: Go to your game shop and fork over an extra £45...
@Ashunera84 someone stated you can't transfer him.
@Damo Sorry about that, I did not read article. So anyway we cannot use them smartphone to bring Pokemon Go Gift. Because said Nintendo was strict to not cheating. That's it. No another optional.
Is Mew required to complete the Pokedex or is it just the original 150?
@oji LOL! Since when were the Pokémon games ever difficult? The challenge has always been in post-game.
Maybe the first Pokémon games two decades ago had more challenge, but the 3DS/DS offerings were easy too.
@Rayquaza2510 That's super insidious. I'm skipping the stupid ball for now. It's a cute concept but here in Canada it's 65 dollars before tax (I know our dollar sucks but that's still nuts even with that factored in).
I'd totally buy it for like twenty, but they felt the need to make it some super complex expensive toy and now it's firmly outside of the price range for the average player. I would kind of get it if it was going to be compatible with the next games too, but as of now, it feels like they realized last minute that it wouldn't sell and crammed Mew in there to help it.
Side note: i thought i could download mew real quick before taking my switch to work... You cant get into that menu until some point later in the game.
@Damo Thanks. Nice to see Nintendo putting out info ahead of a game. They also put out amiibo info for SBBU back in June, though I'm still wait and see on that 1 as I don't believe them. We only have Bowser and DK from Skylanders and those 2 are always touch and go, but knowing the level 50 data should carry over is nice. Think we'll avoid the Pokeball and wait for Gamestop to give out a card in 6 months. Or maybe we can get a card here.
https://www.nintendo.com/whatsnew/detail/the-nintendo-switch-holiday-experience
Since I'm here, watched all 8 eps of Castlevania yesterday. Much better than season 1 as your review said. Nice ending, and even the denouement kind of worked. I'll watch season 3, but not as excited as I was for season 2, season 1 felt like a cliffhanger ending.
And while I was watching that all day I was avoiding that Ingres Harry Potter article, but I'll get back to it today.
@Shadowmoon522 "Regardless paywall dlc is something that should never have existed to begin with."
I think since this game is marketed as a "Go" game they can probably get away with more stuff, but the horse is out of the barn on DLC, it will be interesting to see what they do with the next gen game next year. They still haven't made a game that requires buying 800 $12 Pokemon amiibo but that day is surely coming at some point. Maybe it won't get released outside of Japan though, and maybe they will only be $5 amiibo, I think that's how much those little toys cost for Pokemon Rumble U. We got one of those free buying the game download card at Gamestop so I can't recall how much they cost. I don't think those ever got used in another game. I should try to register it on the Switch and see what happens.
JUST LIKE YOUR DAD'S CHASTITYCA*oof*
Don't like how you can only get it once... wish it was like most games, where if you have the DLC, which is what this is, that it just ties it to your account for future playthroughs. And the meme excuse of 'PeOpLe CaN gEt MuLtIpLeS' is stupid - these are Pokemon, not an in-game currency. It's not a big deal.
Hopefully they'll make Mew available at a later date for those who don't have a PokeBall Plus. Never know though. Star Fox 2 is currently only playable through purchasing a SNES Classic. I figured they may make it available to those who don't have one too. They still might, I guess.
Just an FYI for those actually with the game, as opposed to those whining. You can only get Mew from the pokeball plus, after you have battled your rival. The communication option in the menu is greyed out until your first battle with him/her.
Woah, this is really disgraceful.
I mean, paywalls are bad per se, but this time they really went out of their way to ensure the only way of obtaining a single Pokémon (in a game tha only has the first 151, no less) is paying almost the same amount you already spent for the game. Of course you’re getting a controller too, but how useless is it?
@Hyrule Thanks for the heads up!
I initially misread this and thought you needed a paid Nintendo Switch Online account - which I don't have. But instead it's the free My Nintendo rewards account, which I do have.
Mew is probably the only event Pokemon that I actually care about...but I think I'll just go back to looking under random trucks
@MsJubilee one that is not at all necessary for the core experience. There is NOTHING in the game you need a Mew for. While it may not technically be a cosmetic item, it serves the same purpose. It always has.
Depending on your version of the game, there are a half dozen other pokemon you can't get and have to trade for. Capture a valuable shiny pokemon or something and trade for a Mew. THIS is a core part of the experience.
I'm wondering about something. Can you get Mew if you get the Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee pack that includes both the game and Pokeball Plus?
@rjejr true to an extent, though I doubt even Nintendo would be foolish enough to make a game that requires hundreds of amiibo as they wouldn't be able to get to many sales from it. Even ssb4 and ssbu which have about the most amiibos that are compatible with them(that are not just general stock gifts like getting some random food from a mewtwo amiibo in BoTW) don't make the amiibo that big of a staple in the game; just some extra stuff that dosent affect the rest of the game to much
@Shadowmoon522 I don't think they could do it in the rest of the world but maybe in Japan. I've never been to Japan but I've seen enough pictures of those electronics districts and rows and rows of gumball machines. Even the NY Store had walls of little toy Pokemon. I've never counted, and haven't been in since the remodel, but it was way more than they've done of amiibo.
And at some point in the future all Pokemon cards, probably all trading cards, will have NFC chips in them. Only a matter of time I think.
I am glad yesterday I got Civilization 6 over that
That’s a pretty scummy thing of Nintendo to do. I’ve been really enjoying Let’s Go Pikachu and I had been planning on trying to complete the Pokédex in this game as well but it looks like that won’t be possible now.
Been playing this most of yesterday evening and it's actually pretty god. As I'm not a die hard fan of the series despite dabbling in most of the older Pokemon games my opinion may be deemed void by some. I love the new catch mechanic they have added in to the game but a few things that have boiled my wee are you can't battle wild Pokemon at all. Surely even the choice to catch the Pokemon or fight until defeated would have been a better option or better still just revert back to battling until low health then catch it. I don't ike having to catch wilds to gain xp. I've got like 30 weedles now. Also the pokeball is great to use but the lack of buttons and the representation of the buttons on screen when using the ball don't match. "Press +" the ball doesn't have a flipping + button and the lack of a home button to exit back to dash is more than annoying.
If the word "paywall" were to disappear from the English language, it would be a great day for games journalism.
@frogopus same here. My daughter is loving the game and when I told her pikachu was in the ball she laughed at me until I told her to give it a little shake to see if he's awake. She was amazed and asked if we could open it u and play with him on the rug 😂 say what you want about the price or the lack of buttons etc but to see my daughter's face and excitement.......priceless.
Just got the game today and I'm really enjoying it. Yellow was my first Pokemon game, so Let's Go is super nostalgic. I got the cart alone because I don't play Pokemon Go and it's pretty expensive for only working on one game. If this was a special controller that only worked on Mario or Zelda, I'd be all over it. I'm not a hard core Pokemon fan, so I passed on the pokeball controller. We should be able to unlock Mew without spending $50. Amiibo was easier to forgive because they don't cost nearly as much. I'm not spending $110 (before tax) to get 1% more in game content than paying $60 for just the game. I've got to admit, though, that I am tempted, so Nintendo does know how to do download content slyly. I've got to admire them for that.
@rjejr well, I can see them doing it to pokemon cards as they've done so before back in 2000 with the e-reader, but unlike those I doubt they'd do it to the main tcg as it'd make cheating to much easier
@oji I know people will strongly disagree with you on piracy, but I don’t. I was telling my friends how it sucks that there is so many games out there but very few ways to try them first. I spent money on many games not worth my time and I wished I could try them before buying. Demos are pretty rare these days.
I was on the fence about spending the extra money on the pokeball but when I found out Mew was in it I couldn’t resist. That being said it was an adjustment period actually using it for the first time. But once I figured out how you’re actually supposed to position it in your hand I have had no issues and am quite fond of it. Now I’m gonna get that fancy charger dock when I can. Adjustment period might be cause I’m getting old but damn it took a minute 😂
“The ability to claim your gift of Mew may be discontinued at some point after the initial sales period of the Poké Ball Plus.”
This... can anyone enlighten me on what it actually means? Do they mean if the collection of Mew in PokeBall Plus is discontinued, we may be able to claim it from other source eg. Pokemon Go??
Steps for getting mew satisfactorily
1) Go to your local gamestore (gamestop has been robbing customers for years) buy a pokeball controller get your mew. Return the contoller for full refund, store credit, or another game.
2) enjoy your mew knowing you didnt just waste $50 on a single pokemon for a game you already spent $60 on.
3) nintendo can eat a bag of feces for trying a stunt like this
Couldn’t someone buy a pokeball plus, redeem mew, then return it? I wonder if Nintendo would find out?
@Sketchyone and we wonder whom is the scammer here.
@rjejr Instead of pairing it to one Switch, it's literally paired to one save file, so you would need to spend $40 per Mew at this point unless Nintendo gives a workaround since people are definitely going to buy it, redeem Mew, then return it.
@ktotheile Thanks for the heads up. Got our copy of Eevee in the mail yesterday and all I could think was - we could get Mew for $50 w/ the controller, but why no pre-order bonus w/ the game?
So we're skipping the Pokeball Plus and we'll manage w/ the 4 Joycon we already own. I'm guessing Mew will show up eventually somehow.
Never mind Mew, can you get Mew-Two?
I had Pokemon Yellow and Stadium for the N64 and Mew-Two was near unstoppable
