Nintendo first added 'Missions' and 'Rewards' to its Nintendo Switch Online subscription service in April 2022.
These elements can be accessed by navigating to the NSO icon on your Switch home screen, then selecting the 'Missions & Rewards' section. Here, you'll find a list of available missions, which are related to (as Nintendo puts it) "things you’re probably already doing with your Nintendo Switch Online membership, like playing online or trying out the library of classic games."
Nintendo Switch Online Missions & Rewards
So, what do you get for taking part in these missions? Platinum Points, that's what. These can be redeemed for items in the My Nintendo Store as usual, but also "new member-exclusive icon elements you can collect and put together to create a new user icon."
Nintendo Switch Online Missions & Rewards: November 2024
Each month will have a different theme and icon elements will be refreshed each and every week.
Check your Switch for this week's missions. Here are this week/month's rewards:

Nintendo Switch Online Missions & Rewards: How To Earn Platinum Points
It's easy. As explained above, you simply navigate to the Missions & Rewards section of the NSO app on your Switch console and look at the currently available Missions. Complete these and you'll earn Platinum Points.
Be aware that the time between completing a mission and the points showing in your account can sometimes be quite large, especially at busy times. If your points don't show right away, check back later.
Remember, there are also chances to earn Platinum Points via your My Nintendo account, too.
Nintendo Switch Online Missions & Rewards: How To Unlock Icon Elements
What are icon elements, you ask? These are frames, characters and background elements that you can use to customise your user icon on your Switch console. This is the icon that people see when you're online, too, so there's a motivation to make yours as unique as possible.
Once you've got enough Platinum Points saved, simply select the icon element you want and purchase it. Note that in order to change your 'reward' icon elements, you'll need to be in the NSO online app. You cannot customise reward elements in the standard Switch UI.
In March 2024, Nintendo introduced Play and Reward to Nintendo Switch Online Missions & Rewards. For returning icons, you will now have to play the required game at least 3 times in 30 days in order to see and redeem the icons for that game.

Cool... Will check out
I have been wanting some new icons for a wile, was just thinking about it today, so I’m happy that I can come back weekly for some more, but damn, a lot of them look like very simple pngs a moder could (and have) have done with ease, like dang these suck.
there’s one with toad just standing there, they literally took a snapshot of captan toad in Odyssey,
removed the background, and was all “Yep that would make for a fine icon”. There’s going to be more, so maybe they will look better down the line, but it just feels a little disappointing because I have really been wanting more, but they just don’t look good in my opinion.
Can we get backgrounds already, would be great to spend my silver points on, and I would work for the points too, and I hate to say it but I’m a sucker for all the splatoon icons so I’m sorta happy.
I don’t think I’m interested in this
A Navigational Toe?
Gross!
Please spend an extra $30 a year. Look, we got... I donno, custom icon things. You'll love it.
After several attempts to hit the NSO icon with my toe my Switch fell off the table and broke. All Nintendo's fault.
So they finally added backgrounds, but only for the Avatar Image and only for the one in Switch Online.
What a joke!
Good timing with those Animal Crossing birthdays. I already have Megan and Judy on my island, and Dom's moving in in a couple of days.
Still not enough to sell me on NSO though.
Absorbing Pokémon HOME into NSO would have made infinitely more sense than charging an absurd and frankly insulting AU$25 per annum for what barely amounts to a "service".
@BionicDodo
Our comments are gonna look really strange when they fix the typographical error!
If you don't go online then nobody is going to see your icons anyway, so your not missing out.
It would be cool if someday you could use platinum points to redeem themes for the Switch, I have a bunch that are just sitting there since the physical rewards on My Nintendo have not been great lately.
Like I said before, Nintendo Switch Online is just getting started and improving! It all starts somewhere. I remember when xbox live and psn first started as well.
@Dpishere I know, I just want some themes already.
Nice try Nintendo, still not subbing
@SpaceboyScreams Clearly that’s the only thing you get. 🙄
This seems... dumb. For a moment I thought they added achievements but this isn't quite what I had in mind.
Well whatever. Guess I'll check it out or something.
@Spider-Kev Haha, I've actually always rather liked reading through comments sections filled with references to something that has since been edited!
................crickets chirping
@Joeynator3000 Owls hooting
At least you can finally earn platinum points through Nintendo Switch activity, but if it's only for a few specific first party games, what's the point?
I don't want to have to boot up Animal Crossing again after not playing it in ages to farm platinum points to get physical rewards, or framing for a user icon on the Switch menu...
Edit: Having checked it now, it seems like the missions will probably be geared towards the games available through the NSO service, and the NSO features themselves.
So, it's an incentive to make active use of the NSO feature, whilst also encouraging you to check the Nintendo stores where their exclusive physical awards are available. That's a bit smart.
@Snatcher a faint cough can be heard in the background
@NintendoEternity It launched 3 years ago.. Thats a pretty slow start.
Would be great! …if it actually worked. I’ve done the requirements for all 4 achievements and it’s only acknowledged I’ve done 1. 💀
@SpaceboyScreams
Who gives a like to a post with lies and misinformations?
@Spider-Kev
Wrong.
Well, looks like I'll live to see Xenoblade icons, after all.😄 And I finally have something to spend platinum points on again!
@SpaceboyScreams it doesn't look like the expansion pack is required. And even if one doesn't use the base sub, they can always get a weekly handful of platinum points when they just drop by the My Nintendo website or fill out one of the user feedback questionnaires sent out about select recent eShop purchases.
At least it's an actual use for platinum points I guess. Still pretty lacking compared to the waaaay better rewards system they have for Xbox though, though it probably beats Sony's so guess take what you can get.
That is a pretty neat addition
To add something of value here:
Missions (or at least some of them) doesn't seem to work right now. I tried the "Super Mario Bros."-mission and it didn't get marked as completed.
So either it's broken at the moment, you need to play a minimum amount of time or it takes some time, until it's registered as played.
Themes for my Avatar... baby steps towards full blown themes I suppose!
Removed - inappropriate
@MichaelP Yeah I'm confused how long you have to play Super Mario Bros for to unlock it? Maybe you have to complete it?
Not having other systems means I think this is all good, and hopefully it will get expanded over a long period of time, as that is how they usually do things.
For a second, just a second, I thought this was going to be a trophies/achievements equivalent. Sigh.
Just for everyone:
The service is having issues and the maintenance site says this
"The completion status for Nintendo Switch Online missions may be delayed when the Nintendo Switch Online services are experiencing high traffic. If the mission is not completing right away, please check the mission status later."
lol @ the idea they'll give system themes for platinum coins besides maybe a couple my nintendo ones, the amount of cash i shelled out for 3DS themes as a kid still stings too much for me to think they wont be paid if theyre added
Just make an unlockable border for playing classic games that is black without any icons or gradients or other crap Nintendo has put in there!
I got excited for an actual Achievement system for a minute there.
oh nice, it (very) slowly, but you can see the plans developing... let's see where they are in a year from now..
still miss mii verse though
Just give us Nintendo Badge Arcade damn it. I played that everyday for a couple of years when it launched on the 3DS. I got plenty of icons for free, and was willing to throw a few coins at it if there was an icon I really wanted.
Of course for this to work on Switch we will need themes and folders...
its so funny how nintendo rolls out these features in the original pace of their 1889 founding team. I do understand this isn't a priority as its more QOL stuff that might not translate into profits and sales. Still just ridiculous how there only seems to be one retired old programing guy who might just develop random features next to his chess-game with his niece.
@LuigiBlood
Thanks for the info. 👍
@Spider-Kev Bonk
Cool idea, they just need to fix the fact that the missions wont work currently
The missions don't seem to be triggered for me even tho I'm doing exactly what they say. Any ideas how to fix this?
@NintendoEternity Nintendo had 10 years to get it right. It’s clear online will remain be their weakness.
Consdering how extraordinarily worthless Platinum Points were up till this point I think this is actually not a bad change at all.
@Kiz3000 : I'd rather keep that sort of predatory gambling garbage off the Switch.
But if it's a bonus for NSO subscribers with no in-game purchases, then they can have at it.
Where are my themes and folders, Nintendo?
Omg so exciting!
@MrHonest it's been free until 3 years ago for just $20 a year and now with $50 as an option...seriously what more do you want for how cheap it was?!
He!! We had to waste money on a wireless adapter for the Xbox 360, just to play online.
@NintendoEternity If they want to charge for online they should do a better job than what they’re currently doing.
@robe but it's also just $20 for the year with $50 just becoming available to help support features.
@MrHonest they've just started charging more money for more features. Psn had Nothing but online multiplayer when they first started charging. We didn't get free games and trophies until later on.
I had wished that buying a game gave you access to like half a dozen profile pics based on that game. I would have a Nep Nep one in that case heehee.
I first encountered something similar when I learnt about XBOX Rewards and the cynic in me can’t help its a way to make gaming feel less like a form of entertainment and more like a job where you play when they say to get rewards.
I think I’ll stick to the game I’m playing now and the list I’ve prepped.
@MPWolfie I guess they'll unlock over time, because I too had that problem
This is a nice little feature, but surely after this, customisable themes is what's next right? RIGHT?!?!
This is fantastic, I finally have a use for my Platinum Points now! I'll test this out as soon as possible.
I just tried it out. Creating a new icon instantly overwrote the one I had been using before and actually am planning to keep using (I use my mii for an icon as it looks just like me). So I had to create that from scratch (pose, background, etc.). A bit strange and annoying...
Nothing to see here, move along.
🙄
Nintendo had a good thing going with Nintendo Badge Arcade unlockable badges (3DS). How did it ever come to this? Crazy.
@frabbit "For a second, just a second, I thought this was going to be a trophies/achievements equivalent. Sigh."
That's exactly what I thought it was from the headline...
@MontyCircus it is achievements? That's how you unlock the icons
Everyone is so snarky and pessimistic lol this is a cool little addition. Not the best thing since sliced bread, not the worst thing they could have ever done either. Relax and customize your icons!
@fox_mattcloud I agree, this HAS to lead to themes. Just hope they hurry up ha. Maybe gives us fun folder designs too. Cause my Switch is getting cluttered.
This is very late... seriously, it's about damn time we got these rewards.
Themes Nintendo, Themes! Add those to your NSO+ and maybe I'll subscribe
Gotta say, this would be cooler if it were Gold points. That would put it closer to MS's reward points.
@Clyde_Radcliffe "it is achievements? That's how you unlock the icons"
These achievements are "play an NSO game", "use save data", and "play something online".
I'm talking about in-game trophies/achievements. On XBox, some games have more than 50 that you can win...per game. Imagine trophies that said:
etc. Little challenges for all the NSO games, and even non-NSO games, all games on Switch, that would be fun to accomplish. And you can share them with friends, challenge friends, etc.
@ninoishi same, I can't seem to redeem points for playing super mario bros and stuff
Well, it’s better than nothing! It might be a fun distraction or incentive to try NSO more. Hopefully it will develop into a more robust service. Imagine if If they add Home Screen themes as unlockable rewards — people would be much less critical.
Folders next please, I want to be able to organise all my digital games.
If you get enough achievements,
eventually they give you folders.
@NintendoEternity You still don’t get it. Nintendo hasn’t’ improved when it comes to online after a decade. I will argue that Nintendo took steps backward after Wii U when it comes to online functionality.
If it offered gold coins rather than silver coins....nope, even then I wouldn't care.
@Franklin It's there, if you get 100k silver and gold coins you automatically get folders on the Switch. Also this enables it to play and download any PS5 game from the eShop.
/s
That's...actually cool. Especially since the My Nintendo store stocks physical rewards now.
Yay I guess? Some of the new icon options are cute. The missions are kind of meh, but as Nintendo points out I do many of them anyways. Not the most exciting NSO/user interface change, but it's nice that Nintendo is still adding things to basic NSO.
Wow, this is pretty cool. At the very least, it gives me an excuse to play more NSO, so that’s nice.
This is alright actually and it's something we never had yesterday. Also it's one step closer to themes. But of course, people will always complain.
Nfts nintendo style
@NintendoEternity Xbox Live started INCREDIBLE QUALITY month-1 and free! 5 hours a day playing Mechassault! Good time!
This is fine. It’s better than what I’ve been doing with platinum points before this, which was letting them expire.
why only icons and not the desktop wallpapers? so sad
I'll give it a shot but the Rewards on offer aren't exactly very good. Platinum Points are almost worthless.
@somebread I purchased the entire 3DS Theme Shop. I forgot I did, went to buy a new Theme the other day and there was nothing left to buy.
If they added Themes for Switch I would likely do the same thing again.
Seems a bit limited because you can't mix and match with the icons on the Switch OS or the different games offered, and some of the icons are just basic models, but this is still cool, in my book. Hopefully they take the time to add in icons from a variety of Switch games (maybe even third-party games?).
That's pretty cool, maybe we'll get some unlockable themes down the road???
Give me a Galarian Rapidash icon! Please???
Neat, looking forward to checking this out
Of course, as to be expected with good ‘ol weird and arbitrary Nintendo, you can’t mix and match elements. I can’t use SMO elements with ACNH elements to make my own icon. Which sucks. Unless they add elements for a game I’m just crazy about I don’t see myself using this.
Should had use this opportunity to give us themes and folders for the Switch.
That’s… actually really cool. I always wished there was more icons, this is a good way to make me feel like my Platinum Points are relevant, they usually just expire and go to waste.
@Freek That Stormtrooper scene springs to mind now 😅
Well that's uhhh nice? I'd prefer something useful like basic text chat with friends in 2022...but nah let's add icons. Totally changed my mind about letting my membership expire now!
@ninoishi Same here. Already had some platinum points so I used them to create some nice icons, but this needs fixing.
Sweeeet. I’ve been waiting for new icons and wondering why it takes them this long. This service was probably why. Just bought some stuff and it’s very nice. Excited to see what gets added next!
I actually really like this. I also like this element of Game Pass. It encourages exploration and trying new things
Seems interesting. I'll help my kid with my file in Super Mario Oddysey, she deleted and now we need to complete it hehehe. And as always, people will always complain about anything.
I'm still waiting for Fire Emblem and Pokemon icons though. Why is that so much to ask?
Just did the missions. Only the going on the app one marks as done. I played a few levels of Super Mario Bros and nothing. Played a game and uploaded save. I see it says here it can take a while for points but surely it should tell me if I’ve done the required to get the mission ticked?
Wait, I can earn platinum points with this? Flipnote Studio 3D, here I come!
I may or may not be using this to get a 3DS game before I can't get it anymore, shhh, don't tell Nintendo.
Oh, I also grabbed the Peach icon and it broke the icon in the friends menu, so I had to go back to using my old Peach icon.
Missions are daily or weekly? I have to collect all icons.
Oh my god finally. There's something worth having Platinum Points for that doesn't require money
@NintendoEternity
Xbox Live started back in Gamecube days (2002), and was fully featured by the Wii days (2005) 3 years.
PSN was free throughout the Wii days (2006) and only started charging in the Wii U days (2012), long after the service had become fully featured. 6 Years.
NSO on Switch, now in 2022, and over 3 years old, and a paid service, is neither as fully featured as xbox back in 2005, nor is it building its features before charging like Sony did a decade ago.
I paid the first two years of NSO because I did want them to build up, but it's very clear now that Nintendo do not intend to build up the service beyond what they already do, not on Switch anyway. They are just coasting by until they get to the next system.
This is pretty cool. Logged on just now and completed all 4 challenges, got me a new Goomba Icon so I'm happy with that.
That's cool.... but I'd rather see trophies/ achievements
Is it too much to ask for an achievement/trophy system? I mean I love the idea of completing a game and having something to show for it. Maybe it’s just me…but it really does motivate me to pursue the hardest challenges or fully complete a game. C’mon Nintendo it wouldn’t be rocket science to implement
@Stocksy Similarly, I played some Super Mario Bros., did a save cloud backup of the NES stuff, no points. Then when I did one online race of Mario Kart to complete the third mission to play online, a message popped up saying "you can earn reward points," where friend status usually pops up while playing.
As the article mentioned, it did take some time, it wasn't instant.
Well, at least we're finally getting more icons some way or another! And maybe now we might finally get icons from other games, like Pokemon..? Maybe not.
I like the icons... Excited to see more of them. Hopefully we get a mixture of older games and current ones. Kirby mouthful car should be a good one for next month.
@Sunsy thanks. Mine did pop up in the end. I was happy to wait for points just felt it should tick instantly. Obviously not! Ha. Hopefully they add more as those four took about 2 mins to do!
@Yosher I wish they’d finally add achievements to Switch. I know they’re pointless, I’ve only ever gone for four platinums/100% trophies across PS3/Vita and PS4 but for games you just can’t get enough of they add a nice incentive to keep playing. I find it fun to look at friends trophy/achievements lists too and see how much of a game they enjoyed or whether they beat some of the ridiculous challenges that some trophies that I never could. I’d have put a lot more time into Switch games that I shelved once I saw the credits if achievements were there
System themes and folders would've been better rewards. Icons aren't all that exciting.
This is cool and all but my only problem is that you only get Platinum Points. I don't think anyone cares about My Nintendo anymore except me. But I guess the icon elements are neat as well.
When I said "Oh, I also grabbed the Peach icon and it broke the icon in the friends menu, so I had to go back to using my old Peach icon."
I see what I did wrong here, I checked the Switch's icon settings after changing my icon thinking it would show up there too. Had no idea it's only managed in the Switch online app.
@Stocksy You're welcome, it was fairly quick. Plus, you don't need to dedicate yourself to a full online session, just a quick game of Mario Kart is good enough.
While I did get the new Peach icon, I plan to save my points for Flipnote Studio 3D, just to grab it from My Nintendo before the 3DS eShop closes (I grabbed the Zelda Picross the other night).
Because the game was already short of Mario icons. How about adding Astral Chain stuff?
This seems like a really cool idea. However, as much as I hope Nintendo will make this a good feature, this is probably going to fall flat.
This could be so cool, but Nintendo probably doesn't want to take any kind of risk.
redeeming all animal crossing stuff
This Does Remind Me Of NFT...But This Is in a GOOD WAY!
can't wait for June so I can get Peanut off there she gonna be my icon for now going with Judy since she is on my island
Well atleast its something to sink my butt load of platinum coins into from all those hours of playing FE heros
Edit: why is one of the missions is to backup save data? If someone is using their switch properly wouldn't everything already backup saved?
So you play games to unlock new profile icons? Seems pretty cool.
If only they would've added themes you could get with points
They should make game specific missions like achievements
@Uska then you don't need to worry about that mission it'll clear instantly then
O_O oh no! Must...collect...EVERYTHING!!!!
@PikaPhantom Yeah, the moment I realised I couldn't put the Odyssey frog on an Animal Crossing background was when I went 'missed opportunity' :/
@Dpishere if they ever did add themes those probably be for gold points not platinum points
As part of the overpriced online you now get the chance to work to unlock coins to unlock parts of preset profile pictures. Most services just let you choose anything for your profile picture.
The 3DS had folders, and customisable themes for your home screen with custom music and artwork. This is just more of a reminder how far backwards Nintendo has gone with how much effort they're willing to put in.
@Shadeon_Koopa Agreed - it's weird that they do it entirely through the NSO app, as while I get buying the icons through it, it's kinda lame not being able to mix and match within the proper OS. At least you can save icons made with rewards
This is great! I hope we get user icons for Xenoblade Chronicles and/or Fire Emblem: Three Houses characters at some point. I would definitely use some of those as my Switch profile picture.
I'm sure there's some people who are happy with this.
I just hope they'll circle back in like the badges on 3DS. Not sure if it's possible to earn enough points to keep up with weekly changes and several hundred Animal Crossing characters (and just wait until they get to Pokemon...)
It's not like platinum points are needed for anything else, the missions barely take any effort, and judging by the AC icons there's a decent chance to get access to avatars of less popular chatacters if you happen to have more obscure favorites. Seems like the only real problem with it is that it isn't the other things people want?
Can't believe Nintendo are have stooped so low to invest in NFTs by selling us useless .jpg files, SMH.
Just kidding, this is pretty neat. Platinum Points have always felt incredibly stupid, requiring you to play Nintendo's mobile games (ew) and find hidden secrets on their web pages (lame). The prizes were also really weird where it's either something stupid like entering for a slim chance to win a prize, or something really cool that would require me to have spent an absurd amount of time on mobile. Nintendo is supposed to be a HARDWARE MANUFACTURER, so actually tying the points system to the console itself seems like a no-brainer.
Gold Coins were way better, though both rewards programs were incredibly lackluster. This seems to give Platinum Coins a greater purpose though, and having 2 types of reward points suddenly makes sense. The Gold ones are physical, earned by purchasing Nintendo software and can be spent on goods delivered in the mail; the Platinum ones are digital, earned by playing the games and spent on virtual goodies. It's a pretty cool system, not gonna lie.
Nintendo is really stepping up their game this past year in terms of compelling online offerings. Updating their network infrastructure, offering physical rewards again on My Nintendo, a growing library of legacy content, actual promotions like included DLC expansions--it's good stuff. Not perfect, but it's getting there. It's just a shame it's taken them so long into the Switch's life cycle to start figuring this stuff out.
It's kinda lame to me these icons are time-limited offers, though. There's no valid reason to do that. What if I want to save my points for later rewards, but I don't wanna miss out? Also, I imagine the people wanting Nintendo to add achievements to NSO are not very happy by this news, lol. Earning points through actual in-game milestones could have been amazing.
@CodyMKW sadly, its still marked not done
@MrHonest you're right, I'll never understand why people complain about everything and not appreciate things 🤷🏻♂️
Removed - unconstructive; user is banned
@Richnj well maybe they are coasting until they get to the Switch 2. But it still takes time to build up on Better Online Performance. I'm happy to support Nintendo as long as it takes.
Microsoft gives you free credit, Nintendo gives you digital icons...
Useless for me since it's no Gold points.
On Xbox and PC you get real money payback just by playing games and you did for years already.
At least Nintendo have Gold Coins for purchases.
Sony have no reward system at all.
@Banjo- Yeah. I'm farming MS rewards all the time, because it's real money.
Nintendo should have given Gold Coins instead as it have some value.
@Ventilator Right, Sony gives nothing and has the highest prices of the generation.
@NintendoEternity Of course you don’t since you’re ok with this sub par online service. I however are not.
If they’re going to charge for online then it’s fair to expect better.
Ehh, the mii is unique enough for me, & i don't play Nintendo games online, so too many people don't see it anyways.
@Ventilator sony actually did have a program u can trade ur trophy for gift cards, forgot what it was called. Not sure if it's still active, I don't play ps4 much anymore.
Wow, they add new features and comments full of complaints. I'm just happy it still costs 1/3rd for a year of online compared to MS or Sony. If you don't care about all those bells and whistles, $60 is way too expensive just to play games online. At a dollar something a month I don't have anything to complain about. I'd probably still be signed up for PSN if they were that cheap.
Wish it was gold points. After a year of grinding you would get a new game
@SpaceboyScreams Good thing these are bonuses for normal switch online subscribers.
This article represents why I HATE Nintendo in the Switch generation.
My reaction to this article, "Oh cool, but I won't do Switch Online for the forced renting, but good to see, they finally realize missions are important for games."
Not only are the missions not about the games, but they are for incredibly easy things like "Play a game online" and all you get is a user icon that should be free in the first place?
The Simpsons: Road Rage had a mocking achievement once that by just pressing the "Start" button, you got an achivement for that!!!
That sounds like the extent of what Nintendo achieved with this useless update!
Atm it feels rather like doing chores once a week then achieving something. The icons are nice though.
@twztid13 If they had it were probably limited to USA or something.
I have never seen this on European shops and Sony sites.
@Piyo its not a gif
man, what a bunch of jokers!
I was excited to use these new borders and backgrounds with my Mii but unfortunately it doesn't look like thats possible.
Wish some non-Nintendo characters could get icons.
I would love Puyo Puyo icons personally.
They should definitely get popular ones like Sonic the Hedgehog, Street Fighter, Megaman... basically all the Smash Bros characters lol.
@Clyde_Radcliffe I just played a couple levels
@RupeeClock I personally think this is a cool addition to nso and a really good use of platinum points
@MichaelP we had a four year run with politics in the past so yeah, allot! lol
@NintendoEternity Oh wow, another bad take from you. How shocking.
There's literally thousands of people that care about trophies and achievements, not everyone has the same opinions as you. And also, Nintendo Online is bad. It's been bad since launch and there is no excuse for this, especially when they are charging for it
@CodyMKW It's all so cute! 😍
@ninoishi same here
@Kingdom_Hearts95 That would be amazing! 🤞
@Ventilator ahh, definitely could be. It was trading for "points" which u could then trade for gift cards, it wasn't a 1 for 1 trade. It also wasn't a lot of value. Here's a result of a quick search (so i know i wasn't crazy, lol).
https://www.digitaltrends.com/gaming/playstation-trophies-sony-rewards/#
https://www.rewards.sony.com/
I don't see the trade for trophies anymore, but i didn't look too hard, so it may be buried somewhere. You can see if it lets you sign up here.
@InkIdols
After checking it out properly since I commented, yeah it's a nice addition after all.
@Lem1697 those same thousands who think people "actually care" what they are doing on Facebook lol. Can't believe people waste their time on social media either, but that's another subject...
@NintendoEternity You do realize how you look completely hypocritical right now, right?
Keep it up nintendo someday it will be worth it to pay the online lul
@NintendoEternity Prior to them charging we could play Mario Kart online for free. Now they charge for the experience and have added basically nothing for that extra money. Some 30-40 year old games, big whoop.
What about some proper friend, or party support. Voice comms, messaging, achievements.
I'm sorry, I like the games Nintendo create, but as far as online goes I won't endorse mediocrity no matter how little it costs.
This 1 is a big win! Love that they have added the classic games into this 1 too!!
I read the story on the news feed, then immediately beat SMB.
Absolute banger of a game!
@twztid13 Thank you. I guess the rewards isn't available everywhere as i haven't seen it on EU site here.
I remember Wii U Premium owners like me too.
On top of Gold points, you also got 20% discount reward cards for purchases the 2 first years.
Gold coins also had higher value on 3DS and Wii U than Switch as far as i remember.
These Missons are sooooooo boring! 😴
"Just play Super Mario Bros. NES"
Why not set the challenge to beat the game on the normal difficulty?
I like the idea of customising the icons know. I just wish you could use the default ones as well.
@Clyde_Radcliffe
You just have to load SMB. Then you get it.
@RadioShadow Agreed, the missions are super low effort, but as someone who doesn't have the spare time of a student, I'm glad I don't have to invest much time to achieve them.
Missed a trick again Nintendo, should have allowed users to buy create themes.
Well these missions have had the benefit of me going back and playing the mobile games. I've now completed Mario Run (which I don't remember purchasing) to get all the coins. Next up is FE Heroes.
I don´t play nintendo mobile games. The only game i play mobile is Heartstone. I don´t like NES games today, 2022. I won´t receive any icons, LOL
Alright I think I get It now
We have two games a month for Icons
For March It's Mario Odyssey that cycles each week
and Animal Crossing that lasts all month
Excited for Pokemon and Zelda!
Not to be critical, but wouldn't Switch screenshot captures be a better way to take photos?
Seems like it's gonna be a longggg wait for Splatoon characters & backgrounds in the custom icon rewards. (too long)
Too bad we can't unlock themes or background music or other custom elements... I like my mii icon don't plan to ever change it
gotta hand it to nintendo, they know how to make an online service interesting, by making it a boring achievement system to earn gotdam icons. i wish switching between icons was more smooth. rather than needing to go to the NSO section to change it each time
at least this tells us buying custom themes will be a possibilty? but knowing nintendo itll take them another year to implement
Platinum points seriously , should be at least gold coins . Still won’t be subbing and the missions/rewards still pale in comparison to Microsoft rewards
KING PIETRO!!!!!! (100% will be my icon picture for eternity)
I wish I could use the borders and backgrounds with my Mii but it seems I have to build the icon in the NSO app rather than it unlocking the elements in the general Switch profile app.
Which is the most Nintendo level of annoyingly awkward and confusing ever.
I saw the "Play Super Metroid" challenge yesterday, fair enough.
Proceeded to do a casual playthrough, 81% collection in 1:10 with no particular goals other than do what I feel like.
More than necessary for just claiming the platinum points, but I love that game.
@Clyde_Radcliffe
A lot of the game-based missions just require you to enter the game to complete the mission. With NSO games, it's a bit slower, but it's usually the same case.
@Vonsparrow
You gotta be kidding me. Gold Points are much harder to obtain and are actually worth money. Platinum Points are barely worth anything, and it wasn't until Nintendo started to release physical products and NSO icons when those Platinum Points became useful.
But, I digress...I suppose earning real money is better, but you know Nintendo. They are really stingy
@sisodinr
Nintendo disabled them in the NSO menu. They have to use a sketchy method to take pictures
@Rykdrew
The only game that's realistic in earning Platinum Points is Super Mario Run, and that only takes about 5-10 minutes per day, no purchases necessary.
@ModdedInkling ahhh fair enough. that's really annoying on Nintendo's part.
They need to give you more things to spend your plat on. These icons are pointless!
@Lord
They've been a lot better about giving you physical rewards to redeem recently, I've ordered a fair few neat things on the Nintendo UK Store now.
Wake me when the Zelda/Link ones arrive.. didn’t they JUST have Animal Crossing ones last month
@Lord how about some damn themes for heavens sake
I’ll bite if they do Fire Emblem or Xenoblade icons
I'd rather have trophies / achievements in games than these that are part of a subscription
Is fun collecting them and putting then together but... I really wish Nintendo would let us mix them up together for some cool mash-up profile icons. It would be so epic to have Mario & Cappy with an Animal Crossing background and a Splatoon frame. I really don't understand why Nintendo chose to not allow us to do that...
I got all the Splatoon stickers except for Pearl and Marina. I am a fan of the Squid Sisters so I am hoping for the upcoming weeks there will be Callie and Marie stickers. I have a Callie plushie.
While it's all a nice little bonus it's just the parts to make an icon. You can only have one at once... The novelty has already worn off for me I'm afraid.
Don't get me wrong it's progress, but at this rate it will take years to get anywhere.
I wish it let you mix and match between different games.
@Would_you_kindly achievements are tacky and no longer needed in this day and age
@OorWullie same
Nifty. I like the customized icons.
The "Use This Application Once per week" for +20 coins reward doesn't seem to work for me. Did a hard shutdown and logged into the application again but it's still not recognizing it. I can get all of the other missions to work.
Anyone else?
I rolled my eyes when I saw that characters was now an requirement to get a certain background, Nintendo is wanting to drain the free coins.
No Nintendo I don't want baby Rosalina, the car is hideous, i just want the background.
@Rachel_NES could say the same about these stupid switch online 'missions'
There are.. so many replies here so idk if anyone's mentioned this yet, but maybe with 8 Deluxe here we might get Booster Course Pass news soon. seems a bit early but hey, why not I'm bored until Mario Strikers
What a joke... People are interested in this garbage? Cool in the 90s I guess.
You can’t even redeem platinum points for the icon parts with a 7 day trial. What’s the point of a “free trial” if a bunch of features are disabled? If anything, this sort of conduct only continues to fail to endear me to the so-called “service”. Still not getting my 30 buckaroos, Nintendo.
@TME same for me. Stopped working last week and this week also no +20 reward for using the app. Annoying.
@Yosti Just checked today and my missions have all been completed, including the app. So it looks like it's been fixed.
Came in feeling like it was a foolish hope that they'd do a Purah one and then saw that they actually did, so I'll definitely need to grab that.
@Clyde_Radcliffe five seconds did it for me
@WolfyTn wake up!
Finally Zelda Icons! I love this addition. I finally use my Platinum Points. I didn't subscribe for this but it's a nice little bonus.
@Silly_G I think the icons are part of the Expansion Pack.
This is cool and any extra customisation to the Switch is a good thing. However - and I know I'm doing the typical complaining gamer thing here, sorry - how damn long did Nintendo need for this? I mean, we had the platinum point system for the 3DS already in place when the Switch was made. People have wanted more Switch customisation for half a decade already. It's cool they're finally doing something but talk about slow off the mark.
Might update my BotW Zelda icon at long last... although I'm still hoping for something finally Xenoblade-related this summer, too.
FINALLY! I have always wanted my picture to be some BOTW meat! /j
I hope they add some Xenoblade icons once XC3 has been released.
Waiting for Metroid and Xenoblade.
I really wish that these could be downloaded to be used as profile pictures for Social Media.
I find these missions and badges pretty dull. Which is a shame.
Mario Odyssey again?? That sucks
Didn't expect them to reprise games so soon.😅 Better luck with Xenoblade next month, then? Although if not now, I'd rather have the latter in September onward since I might miss a bunch during my often internetless second half of August.
@mnakoff After creating an icon you can go to your icons list and hit Y to "post to social media" so you might be able to get a nice copy to another device that way.
I feel like I'm one of the few doing so, but I have every icon element released so far (except I still need some of the new batch of ACNL ones) and frankly Nintendo doesn't offer enough ways to get Platinum Points to sustain this. The only way I've managed to keep up so far is by clearing the 100 point FE:Heroes missions whenever I'm running short on points and eventually those will run out.
It's also pretty dumb that you can't mix elements from different games.
@BooJoh I will give that a try thanks for the tip. 🎮
I have been very stubbornly clinging to my Mii avatar...but that Mario Frog...
[edit] seems the frog is an old one I can't get anymore, Mii it is!
I tried to order the Earthbound 8 Melodies notebook on the german My Nintendo store, but couldn't because credit card was the only paying method. I am sure this will be fixed in the future, so I am happy for an extra way to earn platinum points.
Monster Hunter Sunbreak icons please and thank you
Give me splatoon 3 already! It’s probably going to happen sometime after sep 1st.
Really enjoyed these mission and icons, the way you can customize them is pretty cool too, my daughter is always changing hers and adding new pieces.
Love the Xenoblade icons. I'm getting most of the characters but a lot of the heroes I don't know them yet and don't wanna spoil the story by looking them up!
@BooJoh
I could keep up pretty well with just the site missions and Mario Run, as long as we got AC and one other game every month and a special game every other. Now we'll likely have two special months in a row thanks to Splatoon, and next year we'll lose the 30 weekly points from logging into the eShop... and I really can't dedicate more phone space and time to the bigger games. I can only hope they'll slow down again eventually.
At least the Splatoon demo should count as another 100 point mission.
@NintendoEternity
What annoys me far more is the fact that the same people are apparently happy to pay far larger amount of money for those features.
Let's not kid ourselfs here, none of the online features any of the big three give us should cost anything, aside from maybe the "free" games.
And all three companies know this full well, since they force people to pay just so they can play online.
If the features were actually worth their money, they would just sell it to all the people who want it and not force everyone to pay.
I don't care for any of the features any of the big three give me. I do want to play online though.
Therefore, for me, it is the cheapest who wins (which is PC of course, but of the consoles it is be Nintendo).
Yet look at all these people who want to force someone like me to pay more.
Enjoying the icons, but:
@Kirgo nobody is forcing you to buy anything it's your choice 🥱
@CodyMKW
They literally are forcing me, if I want to play online.
If I want to play online, they force me to pay for tons of features that I don't want.
@Kirgo that's not being forced to buy lol
@xRidley15x
Under the condition that I do want to play online, yes it is.
I can't play those games online without having to pay.
Sure I can choose not to play online at all, but that would mean loosing something that I have right now.
If people here get away with their wish, I can either pay a ridiculous amount of money, or I loose the ability to play online games.
Call it however you want, but it shouldn't be hard to see why this annoys me. A lot.
If you guys want to get screwed over even more than you already are, great, do what you want.
Don't pull others like me into your garbage though.
@SpaceboyScreams,
Not $30 for just the icons though, you get online, free game trials, cloud saves, and access to retro games from the NES and SNES.
@Kirgo,
Nobody is forcing you, but you could always get a Playstation or Xbox and play for free............. oh you can't.
The issue with this whole Nintendo online thing, is rather than people celebrate the fact Nintendo's service was free for many years, while others were not, people feel entitled to this forever, and moan they now have to pay for something that should have never been free in the first place.
Oyes, the achievements of Nintendo. The worst kind of implementation I’ve ever seen. Just give me cool achievements jeeesus.
Where the heck are the splatoon 3 ones bruh!
@johnvboy
Yes, I think the services by Sony and Microsoft are way worse than what Nintendo is offering, at least for someone like me. It's one of the main reasons why I don't have these consoles.
This is why whataboutism like yours doesn't work.
All this stuff costs almost nothing for these companies to implement and we, the consumers, have the power of fighting back against this kind of nonsense.
But instead of doing it, and instead of maybe just not caring so much about the price (I can understand that much, if it's just not your concern), people are actually asking Nintendo to raise the prices. This is just about the worst thing you could possibly do as a consumer. And again, it especially screws over people like me.
I am not angry about Nintendo as much as I am annoyed by the fans here.
But I think it is also telling that you mention Sony and Microsoft in comparison, but ignore the pc, where all of those features are actually free.
I am already a Nintendo and PC gamer, and it could very well happen that I will go PC only if this stuff happens.
It just sucks that I would lose the Nintendo part of my hobby, not even because of corporate greed or anything, but because of some fanboys on the internet.
And no amount of saying "you don't have to buy" changes that. I either pay more money, or loose the games and just because of you guys and no one else. And if this were implemented during a generation, like right now, I would even loose access to a part of the games that I already have and payed money for.
It's a sad world where you are being called "entitled" for being against this kind of stuff.
And let's be clear about something:
I wouldn't say anything if you were to just ask about the features that you want. But people here regularly ask to please make the entire service more expensive so that we can have these features, as if there are no other options.
Make it an option that you don't need to play online. How about that, for example?
@Kirgo,
My comment was not aimed at you personally, but as I said for many years Nintendo offered free online play for their games, which I was pretty grateful for, Microsoft haver always charged, although subscription is a business model they are used to, Sony were free but eventually decided to charge for their online service,
Of course people will always compare service and prices, but in my opinion for what it is Nintendo's price is good value, but of course this will depend on the individual and what features they want.
The online single membership is $19.99 at the moment, which is only 0.056 cents per day or $1.67 per month, so whichever way you slice it. it's pretty good value, of course if you are comparing it to being totally free then it's another matter, I used the basic membership price because that allows cloud saves and online play.
The reason I do not mention P.C is because it's a totally different eco system, Nintendo's service has far more in common with the other console manufacturers.
As for the whole Nintendo only do it because people will support it argument, this does not make sense as we have no idea outside of the core gamers who is even upset about all this in the first place.
And as for my entitled comment, I do find there are many very vocal people on here and other various forums etc, who rather than be grateful to Nintendo for offering something for free that others were already charging for, they moan and groan they now have to pay for it.... sorry but this seems the very definition of entitled to me.
Also you seem to suggest the service costs Nintendo very little to implement without actually knowing their costs etc, pretty sure this will be far more than you imagine.
Then their is choice at the end of the day, I have an Xbox Series X and I do not pay for the online service, now one could argue it's far more of a detriment to myself not to do so on tat particular console, but I have decided not too. I guess I play my Switch much more and subscribe to the full online with the expansion pack for £59.99 which is only £4.99 per month, or 17 pence a day, for me personally the service is more than worth it.
@koekiemonster,
I never got the self gratification of achievements, it's like we need some sort of automated appreciation for completing a game or task.
They pop up on my Xbox all the time, and just do not get any emotion about them either way, do understand why you and others like them, but for me they are pretty pointless.
@johnvboy
You shouldn't be grateful for free online, as that should be the absolute norm. By your logic pretty much every gaming company aside from Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft would be saints, since you can play their games online without having to pay a monthly fee. They all could charge you for that after all.
Thank you EA for letting me play FIFA without having to constantly pay you money for the priviledge of using your infrastructure.
You may now say that it is different, but it really isn't. Both Nintendo and EA have to provide very similar things for us to be able to play their games online.
This is also where your argument falls flat about how PC is a different eco system. The problem being that there is just no relevant difference.
Servers and services are still being provided just the same as they could be provided by Nintendo, just on one side they are free and on the other they are not.
The main difference being that a console manufacturer has total control over their own plattform. No one has that kind of control over the PC.
But this is especially why we should not let these companies do whatever they want. If we just take every price increase like it is normal, then they will just continue to increase prices. Not because they have to, but simply because they know they can get away with that.
This is simply the power the consumer has over the industry. The consumer is, dare I say "entitled", to say 'no' and not buy their product. Letting the company know what they think is also useful in the hopes that it never comes to this.
Furthermore, if we follow your logic through, you would still be grateful even if Nintendo charged 1000$ per year, as long as Sony and Microsoft charge 2000$.
I have no idea why we are talking about this while adressing my previous points though, as this is completely beside the point I was trying to make.
I am not angry at Nintendo, even if I do think that they shouldn't charge for online. The price is low enough for me to still look past that. I pay for Nintendo online right now and I do not have a huge problem doing that.
If Nintendo were to increase the prices right now during the generation I would be angry, as I bought games under the assumption that the online price is what it is. Me having to suddenly pay more or lose access to important parts of said games would be very consumer unfriendly, but they are not doing that, so it is fine.
What I actually have a problem with is how some fans want Nintendo to increase the price (under the condition of getting more features).
For a consumer, that is a very foolish thing to do, especially considering there would be far better option than this.
It is also very selfish as these people do not care about what others think. They basically say "I don't care if everyone has to pay more money, as long as I get what I want".
@johnvboy
As this is pretty much its own topic.
About your following point:
"Also you seem to suggest the service costs Nintendo very little to implement without actually knowing their costs etc, pretty sure this will be far more than you imagine."
First of all, I wasn't talking about Nintendos current services, but the ones that people want. The stuff that Sony and Microsoft have and Nintendo doesn't. The stuff they want to pay a premium for, for some reason.
Doesn't matter though, let me adress that anyway:
Price for playing online:
There are enough games out there, were you can rent your own personal servers to run them. We know that it is cheap.
Also consider that prices for renting such servers are way higher than if you set up your own server, since the company behind that is trying to make a profit.
Also consider that for a big company this is much much cheaper still, as they can buy and set up servers in huge quantities, making them cheaper through scaling.
To further show how cheap it is, cosndier as well how many old games, some very old games, are out there with still active servers. For free.
Then there is also the fact that games may not even use Nintendo servers for online play... Nintendo will still charge for that.
Conslusion: We know very well that this costs bascially nothing for Nintendo. Same for Sony and Microsoft.
Cloud saves:
I can literally set up my own cloud system easily.
Let me homebrew my Switch and I could even write a small script that saves away my saves in my cloud automatically.
Servers also don't need to be massive for this, even for Nintendos scale, since they don't need to constantly communicate with the clients, also savegames are generally very small.
Conslusion: We know very well that this costs bascially nothing for Nintendo. Same for Sony and Microsoft.
Voice Chat:
You know how cheap even a discord premium account is? and that is much much much more than what Nintendo woud have to pay per user, even if they were to directly partner with said discord. Server prices are also known, but from what I have already written, you should know where this is going.
Conslusion: We know very well that this costs bascially nothing for Nintendo. Same for Sony and Microsoft.
The only hard to predict variable here are the "free" games. Be it Nintendos retro games or what Xbox and Sony are doing.
But I would be 100% fine if they charge money for that.
But why do I need to pay for that, if I don't care for it?
And that is the thing all in all.
We actually DO know that the needed infrastructure isn't that expensive.
Though again, the Nintendo service is so cheap, that I am still fine with that.
This is mostly a hit towards what Sony and Microsoft are doing (and some Nintendo fans want to have, for some reason.)
@Kirgo,
Only my own personal opinions, you don't agree, not the end of the world.
They just had to give me Splatoon 3 icons huh.
@Kirgo People seem reluctant to share theirs for some oddball reason, but I have vacant slots in my family plan for standard NSO if you're interested in having online availability at no cost. You seem really passionate about it so I offer to you. Let me know.
@AlexanderDaniels
Thank you, but it's fine.
As mentioned, I am not really bothered by what Nintendo is currently doing.
My problem lies mostly just with fans who want to increase the price for everyone, just because they think they benefit from it.
Sorry if someone else has answered this, but I looked at this yesterday, where are the "Missions"???
@Bunkerneath See the second screenshot in the article above. You can find the missions by navigating to that little red symbol at the top that, in this picture, says 3/5 have been completed.
@Kiz3000 Oh ok, thanks, couldnt find them anywhere, its really quite hidden
Raymond 🤩
That is all NL
Oh didnt know this, will check later
No Bayonetta 3 icons? Guess I’ll keep hoarding my points then, since I don’t think I will change my Lanz avatar anytime soon.
I hate these achievements….. I want real ones.
Soon I will have 1,000 icon elements I never actually use!
I wish you could mix and match; Why can't a Mario character stand in a Splatoon background?
Erf Mario Odyssey again... It's like there's only 3 games on Switch...
After the NES icons from a couple of months ago, I hope we'll get SNES icons soon. And maybe N64 icons at one point.
(Edit one day later: Thanks Nintendo)
I'll be happy when we finally get to Kabuki for Animal Crossing
Think it's safe to assume December's icons will be MK8 Deluxe with the Rock Cup and Moon Cup as well as either Shell Cup and Banana Cup or Triforce Cup and Crossing Cup.
I wish they'd allow you to exchange Platinum Points into Gold Points you can use at the Eshop. Even if the exchange ratio was something like 10 Platinum Points for each Gold Point, it'd still be better than the current award system. I don't care that much about customising the small player icon you can barely see at the upper corner of your screen, and the physical rewards are mostly useless trinkets limited to a handful of games.
This icons are pretty beautiful. Well done.
Already using an Engage icon.
The glorious Bob icon. Best reward rotation 10/10.
Set mine to Colgate waifu, my games still in the post so I don't know her name yet, but she cute... I will die on this hill.
@papahefe,
Totally correct, this is a nice addition to the online service, and some pretty cool icons, but some will never ever be happy.
@Nanami_Ataraxi You're not alone, female Alear (putting her name in spoiler tags just in case you minded even though it's public) is so cute, I'm playing as the male one because I'm male, but much prefer her designwise!
@JohnnyMind
I'm so glad, she was getting so much hate, I felt so bad for her, so nice to know she's loved by at least one other person. ^-^
Thankyou, I'm in currently on chapter 7 so I know her name by now (I actually watched reviews where her name was mentioned but I guess I missed that part XD)
and seeing her in action is even more cute, she has such adorable quirks! I wonder if the male version is the same or he is more stoic?
I tend to be pretty bi in my preferences when it comes to anime styled characters, but I generally lean towards females, though Joker from persona is an exception to that rule XD
@Nanami_Ataraxi You're much further than I am, I've just finished the Chapter 2 battle XD
It would be interesting seeing a comparison of the two in motion!
I'm cis even when it comes to anime-styled characters, but I definitely still appreciate cool male characters and Joker is absolutely one of them XD
@JohnnyMind
Oh pay me no mind, I have no life XD
I'm sure someone will do it and put it on YouTube soon
Yup he sure is ^-^
The Super Mario 3D World ones look pretty awesome! I will definitely be grabbing those. I would only grab a few of the Animal Crossing ones since i didn't fully enjoy Animal Crossing New Horizons as much as I thought I would. Getting to choose between more Super Mario icons is always a plus in my book though!
@Dpullam Same about more Super Mario icons (personally didn't get all the Animal Crossing ones simply because there are way too many, will slowly but surely get them all as they cycle through them again) and even more so since these 3D World ones include not only 3D renders, but also some 2D artworks (love those) and eventually Bowser's Fury ones!
@JohnnyMind Absolutely! I will take anything Super Mario related that Nintendo will give us!
@BionicDodo Don't worry, they'll add more stability so it won't fall off the table.
