Gaming accessory maker Hori is set to release a Mario Kart Racing Wheel for Nintendo Switch, with two versions now appearing at various retailers. If you're hoping to track one down or learn more about it, you've certainly come to the right place.
Both wheels come with pedals for that authentic driving experience, but there are some subtle and not-so-subtle differences. Let's quickly take a look at what both the standard and deluxe versions of Hori's Mario Kart Racing Wheel offer:
Hori Nintendo Switch Mario Kart Racing Wheel Pro Mini
For the avid Mario Karter we have the rather cumbersomely named 'Hori Nintendo Switch Mario Kart Racing Wheel Pro Mini' (breathe). Coming in a fetching red and blue with yellow highlights, this entry model still comes with pedals and is perfect for the Mario Kart (or general racing) fan on Switch who wants to take things up a gear. Check out the vital statistics below:

Hori Nintendo Switch Mario Kart Racing Wheel Pro Deluxe
For the more discerning racing enthusiast, Hori's 'Nintendo Switch Mario Kart Racing Wheel Pro Deluxe' is no less of a mouthful, but offers clamps and suction cups to affix your wheel to a table for a more substantial, serious racing experience. With pedals included, it's a little less 'loud' but no less proud - one for the hardcore racers, then.
A racing wheel that has the same operation and size as the car wheel with a diameter of 280 mm. It is also equipped with a mode that makes it easier to steer (180 degrees angle), and a "button assign" function to customize the button layout according to your style. In addition, it has a clamp and suction cups that fix your position to make it stable anywhere.

Why would I ever want this when I can make one out of cardboard?
Day 1. Deluxe version. Now re-release F-ZERO GX, you cowards!
Until then GRID Autosport will do nicely with this.
Oh yes. Perfect birtday present for my kids. (or me)
Looks cool, I wonder if it’ll feel much different to the Toy-Con Car in the Labo vehicle kit (other than not being made out of cardboard).
Okyepthisismine
I got excited about this until I saw Hori.
Short for horrible.......
I'll wait for some reviews and user experience. Love the styling, but I won't be dropping £100 blindly.
Please add HD rumble. Please also make the pro pedals analogical so they can work with games that suport it like Grid Autosports.
I play MK8 and Grid with a chep xbox wheel, but it does not have rumble.... Which at the end sucks
Useless until somehow Sega is convinced to make a new Initial D game for Switch.
Bluh more plastic to take up space that I won't be using in several years time.
By the way, the cheap version is a clone of this:
https://www.amazon.es/Indeca-Volante-Switch-Racing-Nintendo/dp/B07BMY1N8V/
If they have not improved the materials then it is the worse. I have owned 2 of these wheels and I have broken the sleeve triggers on both. Pressing it while turning (mario kart) destroys them.
I hope the pro version is better though.
I get that it's Hori and not Nintendo doing this, but it's head-scratchingly well-past MK8DX's prime playtime (by over 2 years, if you can believe it). Like the Switch Lite, maybe Hori knows about some MK8DX DLC that we don't.
Genuinely I didn't see this one coming. Can't recall the last time a Nintendo system got a racing wheel accessory that wasn't the Wii Wheel (or similar accessory).
Wheels are the worst way to play mk games
@KingBowser86 I hope so, only reason I double dipped was due to rumours of more DLC
Wow, something that's actually not a cheap hunk of plastic to shoehorn a wiimote or joycon into. I'd actually be more looking forward to using this with something like Grid or Gear Club.
yesverycool,coolverygoodandcool,mightbegoodyesmhmverygooditmightbe.
MK9 or MK10 or MK Ultimate better be announced in a December Direct or TGA or next year at E3 if they are launching this now.
Though I already have this, just still need to build it.
Looks great. Would like one. I want it
Oh, beautiful. I've always wanted something like this but they would never release them for Nintendo hardware.
I actually don't care at all for the Deluxe Edition (though I still feel compelled to buy it) but the standard one is a real beauty.
@KingBowser86 I think MK8 is well past the DLC phase.
MK9 however must be soon.
i don't honestly care for what other people say -i still want this and believe that this is worth the money 😍❤❤
Just in time to celebrate Mario Kart Tour... here's something for Mario Kart on the Switch!
This looks excellently designed and colorized, though I do not think I could justify paying that much money for a game I already don't have due to playing it on Wii U to an extreme amount, and also because I don't play Mario Kart 8 enough in general. If it was compatible with the next potential Mario Kart, I might reconsider.
I thought we were past the era of every console having a bunch of steering wheel controllers. I remember Game Stop having tons of them just collecting dust about 10 years ago. And the local Book Off here just chucks them in a "junk" basket for like 200 yen. Or about 2 dollars. lol
Always wanted a decent wheel for MK8 but why make it look so childish it’s the same as apex wheel for PS4 just make it look like that I’m sure more people would be tempted to buy it then
Now? I mean... that's too expensive for me, but anyway... now?
I'm thinking we'll get a new Mario Kart next year. It's been far too long since MK8 actually released and it's they're top seller on almost every console it's been on
nothing to see here folks just get a cheap joycon steering wheel lol I saw one for 12 pounds, a joy con steering wheel I mean lol.
Hey cool, I was wondering when we’d get plastic versions of the toy con.
@dew12333 I agree Hori isn't the best quality. But I have a wired Hori controller, and it's lasted me longer than any of my joy-cons.
@LavaTwilight Feels kinda soon for it, but given the structural issues with MK8, I'd be more than okay with that!
I feel like Mario Kart is best with analog sticks... wheels are better for "realistic" racing games... I suppose I would try it if available for demo somewhere.
Do many people like playing arcade Mario Kart with a steering wheel? I never really enjoyed arcade Mario Kart, because of the steering wheel.
And, its always seemed strange never bringing the arcade tracks to a Nintendo console.
@KingBowser86 isn’t MK8DX in the top ten games every week?
@Shiryu If it's compatible with grid, it's a day one for me.
@Soepkonijn It should be compatible with every game that supports the Pro Controller (its wired and USB compatible on PC too!) so if the game allows you to remap the buttons, it should all good. But having an official update from Feral that would automatically map everything out of the box would be ideal.
Or you could get the Labo one...
@rxchrisg I don't think he means it's a poor seller or that it's a bad game, I think he's talking about the lack of DLC, lack of initial direction inc no real way of unlocking characters, tracks or similar progression. The only boon to own it over the WiiU version who purchased all DLC is to have the battle arenas. It's a hot seller for sure and a decent port. It's just been 2 years now without anything new and 5 years since MK8 was first released.
@rxchrisg A) There's hardly anything else for Switch to sell in Evergreen beyond top first party titles, B) it's really the only kart choice every Gen whether good or bad relative to the rest of the franchise, and C) just because it sells or is popular does not mean it's good (see: the quality of MMBN3 causing the sales of the lackluster MMBN4 to spike).
Can’t wait to see youtubers beating beast gannon blindfolded playing only with ´this’ device
@LavaTwilight This, too. But there are some issues with nuanced things like vertical splitscreen, item balance, item farming (amplified even more by Coins), battle arenas (though much better than tracks) are still a bit large, camera angle limiting proper FOV (which has pretty much never been a problem prior), unintuitive gameplay mechanics (for the party crowd), having to turn off auto steering and acceleration — nothing that makes it unplayable, but all certainly take some joy out of it because it makes people hesitant towards couch play.
Will this work with other Switch racing games, like GRID Autosport? If so this would be awesome to have
@KingBowser86 One thing though, at least the Blue Shell seems a bit more balanced than it did on the Wii. I know what you mean about the battle arenas though, on the Shine Sprite mode I have gone the entire 20 seconds without being caught on some of those arenas.
While Mario Kart 8 Deluxe may still be a top seller for Switch, it's OLD by now in video game terms, having debuted on the Wii U. And let's face it, most folks now only break games like MK8 out for multiplayer sessions with traditional controllers because A) they've long since finished the single player campaign and B) they can't afford a wheel accessory for every player (and have you ever had kids argue over who gets to use a particular controller? 'Nuff said.).
I mean, this does look nice, but a new wheel accessory frankly feels poorly timed right now; again, most folks would use it for a single player campaign they've long since finished (assuming they didn't prefer a traditional controller to begin with). If a new Mario Kart game for Switch was on close on the horizon I could definitely see it, but aside from new Switch owners this holiday season I'd say this will be a tough sell.
@8bitforever aw thanks hon u vu! <3! And that is very true right there, i rather either test out the stuff first, or here a critique about it from people who actually care for ya wallet and give you honesty about the product and if you still are skeptical about it -buy it/try it out.
ooooooh man... Lord knows my gimmick loving self is gonna wanna buy both models (coz, multiplayer, right?)... oy.. these are BEAUTIFUL!!!
Honestly if they would make wii remotes work on switch ill use my old wii wheel lol..
The $130 one is just stupid, you can get a serious racing wheel for that much. At least the cheaper one can make a case for it's self, I mean it isn't much of a racing wheel but at least you aren't paying a lot for it.
@dew12333 Normally I like Hori products, but this is one that I would definitely pass on when it comes to them. As someone who is really into racing sims on the PC and PS4 I can tell you how these wheels have a very dated look to them. The cheaper one is just a budget wheel so I guess that's passable, but the deluxe wheel is just cheap and outdated looking for what you are paying. Hori isn't proven when it comes to racing wheels so I definitely wouldn't rush out to buy one of these.
@Shiryu Well, as long as it recognises the pedals as analog input, I'm happy. 😀
@LavaTwilight Sure, MKWii was an item onslaught. At least now the Blue Shell hits people along the way and the Super Horn is available. Granted, the Super Horn really comes across as a "workaround" or a "stopgap" as opposed to a legitimate item addition.
"But then how do you take care of the Veteran versus First-Time Player issue?"
Mario Kart 64 already nailed this, frankly:
Very visible shortcuts needing mushrooms, actual tangible boosts from mushrooms and Stars that allow you to catch up but require careful use, open areas for red shells to work, narrow strips for banana peels and green shells, track hazards that mainly block the optimal paths to keep everybody together AND creating a substantial risk/reward scenario that keeps veteran players engaged while reasonable new players understand and respect (making memorable stories and moments yet even in their loss), only rare Blue Shells and Lightning Bolts that could potentially hamper everyone while also taking care of 1st "when too far out in front," the frequent Boo item taking care of item hoarding, etc.
"But isn't that a slippery slope? Can't that be taken overboard to the point where who places first becomes a dice roll?"
Yes, and that's why we're paying Nintendo heartily to balance and playtest the darn thing. Additionally, most party games have an element of chance to them because, again, it'd just be the seasoned players winning all the time. Better to err on that side than the "Make it to where newborn babies can play" philosophy that we've been getting.
Would this work with CTR? (Crash Team Racing)
I am enticed, but after the fiasco that was Hori’s Ace Combat 7 HOTAS flight stick, I’m gonna wait for user reviews to come in. Not gonna fall for that one twice.
@KingBowser86 that's a bit of a rant. Best to keep all bases covered eh?
That's why people still play and prefer Mario Kart 64 today. I liked how it punishes those who fail to make the jumps, or fall off the track like in the chocolate land course. And why people still play SSB Melee.
Anyhoo, MK9 would be good.
I assume this is made by Fisher Price?
@LavaTwilight I haven't typed my MK direction/critique all out like that in a while. I did so on the very off-chance that Mario Kart/Tour feedback from NLife gets reviewed by Nintendo UK (or even NA). I realize how lulzy that sounds, but hey, doesn't hurt to remind Nintendo what to do if true.
Heck, I wasn't aware people still played MK64. C'mon, N64 Classic!
@ss213 Yeah, Grid Autosport analogue support would make this great.
Finally, this won't be far from Mario Kart GP DX with the right set up.
@NINtendo242 I'm not sure, I think support would have to be added in a patch for most games.
Now let me plug in my Fanatec CSL Elite and we'll be golden LMAO.
That black and red one looks sweet. I wonder if it is any good.
@KingBowser86 well I think the NLife staffers read these posts... up to a certain point. Just the other day I spoke of Captain N and no more than a few hours later there was a post about it being the 30th Anniversary. I'm sure others have similar experiences. You may too.
@dew12333 You're crazy! Hori is the number one third party accessory maker. Their stuff is almost as good/ sometimes better than first party!
Please review it. I love the looks of it 😍
@KingBowser86 lol that your example is Mega Man Battle Network
@rxchrisg Clearest case of the phenomenon and an awesome series to boot! I miss it. Actually, there's rumors about something for the series brewing over at Capcom (which would make sense given all of the merchandise in Japan over the last year or two).
https://www.resetera.com/threads/protodude-teasing-new-mega-man-x-and-battle-network-mobile-games.112157/
Speaking of which, we should be hearing about it in the next few months (given Megaman X DiVE).
@KingBowser86 - Was actually wondering why people still like MK64, so thanks for that.
@MasterJay cause its not made out of cardboard sir
@Marioxb
Sorry but my experience is two controllers bought and two broken within 6 months.
Does this mean I can hold out hope of my Thrustmaster t150 working on the Switch in the near future? I really like grid but playing with a controller is a mile away from being how to best play it,never mind one with digital triggers. Yes I'm aware the gamecube controller is supported but a FFB wheel will always be best for racing games
First, the studio that ported GRID: Autosport had the ingenious idea to support the Gamecube controller due to its analogue shoulder buttons and now this?
Well...now we just need more racing games!
Great! I was looking for a nice way to collect dust. This would be perfect!
@gcunit couldnt agree more. But this does seem very cool. I'd love a steeringwheel when playing Grid on switch.
I would absolutely buy one.
@MasterJay cardboards are a joke and a cheap way to get more money of people
My new smash controller 😂
@Alucard83 Don't know what your talking about, cardboard is obviously superior to plastic in every way 😉
Looks nice, but the pro controller is enough for me.
I would love it, but not for 60 notes
Why now? I don’t get it.
@FullMetalWesker MK64 is the second best of the series, easily. It’s multiplayer Battle Mode alone is eternally classic.
I will just use the ring-fit to drive my Mariokart.
I hope this comes to Australia too.
Ordering both from Play-Asia would be horrifically expensive.
So are the peddles analog? This would be great for my kids so I don't have to share my Fanatec setup on the PC. 🤣
Nice hopefully it also works with Crash Team Racing and Team Sonic Racing as well instead of just Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
I’d be surprised if the standard wheel doesn’t come with suction cups. Looks like the deluxe comes with a clamp. Not sure what else justifies the x2 price tag.
Am I the only one who is excited to see if "Alex" can play Super Smash Bros with this controller!?!
I wonder if pro Playstation or Xbox sites think it's important to advertise licensed accessories under the guise of news?
Someone probably said this already but imagine playing mario kart vr with this set up! Just pack in a headset with the wheel, give mk8 an update and boom! Mario kart back up in the top 10!
@Wavey84 exactly, and ahh :0!
pointless playing with a wheel unless it has force feedback. I'd love GRID to have force feedback steering wheel support. My Thrustmaster T150 would be the way I'd always play it. Nintendo overpricing their accessories once again. especially the pro model
The Delux one lloks cool, it's more or less a Mario Kart reskin of this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Racing-Wheel-controller-Officially-Licensed/dp/B01K7JEIOC/ref=asc_df_B01K7JEIOC/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=310694401667&hvpos=1o1&hvnetw=g&hvrand=17184335708570033637&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9045302&hvtargid=pla-313111342734&psc=1
