There are 107 new Pokémon in Scarlet and Violet, including all new evolutions, forms, and legendaries — and we're here today to pick the very best of them.
Our writers (the ones playing Pokémon, anyway) have sat down to decide their favourite Pokémon designs out of those 107 — and even though our picks are sometimes determined by competitive suitability and sometimes just by sheer cuteness, we hope you'll agree with us. Here's what we went with!

The entire Tandemaus line. I'm obsessed. It's two mice, and their evolution is two mice plus babies. That's not evolution, that's biology.
They also look so adorably stupid, with their blank little eyes and their expressionless little faces, and I'm a sucker for any round Pokémon.
Also, honourable mention to Dudunsparce, for similar reasons — it's just such a goofy idea for a design. "Dunsparce, but more". Love it.

I'm happy to see the Pokémon designers taking weirder ideas and running with them, like convergent evolution and whatever Tandemaus is all about. I wish they didn't pad out the Pokédex with Pokémon I've already seen from previous gens, though.

I'm picking a couple of later Pokémon who stand out as favourites for me at the moment — sorry to Fuecoco's evolution, Skeledirge, for its awesome Gaudi-inspired coffin design and microphone bird flame...thing.

Glimmora is fast becoming my favourite Paldea Pokémon, and part of that is because of its design. It's a Rock/Poison type that's likely based on copper sulphate, a toxic compound that's formed of blue crystals. But it's a really beautiful take on it — Glimmora looks like a crystallised flower, and while most of the time it floats around in a kind of bullet form, sometimes it hangs on the walls face-first. It's a really simple, sleek design that I've grown attached to.

Shoutout to Tatsugiri, who is the funniest concept for a Dragon-type Pokémon ever. A sushi fish? With three different variations? It's so stupid, but I love it all the same. Of course I have all three forms, but I think Droopy is my favourite.
Gen 9 doesn't have as memorable a selection of new 'mons as Galar did, but a lot of its middle and final evolutions are pretty darn cool, and I think the simplicity of many of the new Pokémon wins out in some ways.

Okay, so listen, there's really only one acceptable answer to this question, and that's Charcadet. The little thing is just so adorable, yet somehow exudes remarkable power. In short, Charcadet would have been the perfect fire starter Pokémon had we not already got Fuecoco.
In fact, I'm almost hesitant to follow the relevant steps to evolve Charcadet, because I've grown so unreasonably attached to it. It's proven itself to be a great member of my team and held its own against several gym leaders and titan Pokémon.
A special shoutout, however, goes to Pawmi. This little Pokémon evolves twice and gains a secondary fighting type when it evolves into Pawmo, but the first iteration is just so darn cute, it could honestly give Pikachu a run for its money as the very best electric type.

Fuecoco is still, hands down, my personal favorite design in the whole game. It's so doofy and happy! I love it.
Not played them, but I gotta go with Annihilape. Such a cool design
Ceruledge
I was just having a discussion with a coworker about tandemaus and the whole maushold two days ago!
Super adorable and silly, but I just can't find space for them on my team!
I can't chose a fav between clodsire and cetoddle!
There are actually some fantastic designs in the new game. Yes there are a few performance and minor bugs around but if you look past that and it's easy to do this is shaping up to be one of the best gens for a while. Can't wait to see what's coming in the DLCs.
Meowscarada, Quaquaval and Skeledirge are all different in their own right and imo are the best starter evolutions since gen 3. Flexible move sets and all excel.
The early bug pokemon are awesome compared to previous gens, the dogs are cool and the returning Pokemon all seem to fit - there aren't too many I miss besides some starters and some legendaries. Might be cool to do a DLC that is just a massive legendary dump, a new island and quests to find and get all of them.
Borisjohnson-emon, he's great, you catch him, he embroils you in a scandal, sacks all your other Pokemon, gives his dad all your cash, and then leaves you to go on holiday.
Given my amassed Pokemon backlog among the flagships alone, I didn't even plan to grab Violet in the visible future...
...until I discovered Sprigatito's final evolution.
My favorite is the Tinkaton line!
I’m a fan of all the throwbacks to N64 graphics...
Grafaiai is probably the top spot. There are some great Grass types this gen, like Smoliv’s entire line and Scovillain. Also very fond of Tadbulb/Bellibolt, Clodsire, Farigiraf, and Tarountula. But I will say on the whole, the designs weren’t nearly as creative as the last few gens. Way too many of the Pokémon are just normal animals that don’t really feel like Pokémon. And there are too many that are just cute or cool with nothing really quirky about their appearance, such as Charcadet’s line or almost any of the dog/rodent ones this gen. Even the starters fell victim to this, except Fuecoco, which I almost wish I had started with because of how amazing its evolutions are.
Tinkaton is my favourite plus if you read the Dex entries you will find they're little sh*ts and cause trouble for a certain metal bird Pokemon.
Professor Sada, but only if she counts.
I don't know about the design, but Skeledirge has by far the best cry in the series and Maushold the best name.
Favorite quote is from Kate Gray:
“That’s biology.” Glad someone out there understands.
Too many to pick from this gen honestly. I don't think I have one particular favourite as of now so I'm just going to list some of my favourites:
There are many more I could go on about like how hilariously brilliant the Wiglett and Toedscool lines are, how great the regional bugs are this time round or how Great Tusk utilises the idea of a prehistoric Donphan perfectly but I'll stop there for now. This gen has so many bangers though.
Hard picks but for me it’s the funny walking Toedscool & Baxcalibur that’s clearly not Godzilla lol.
THE BIG DERPY WORM THING, IT'S SO UGLY, I LOVE IT
Memes aside, I absolutely adore wiglett
I really like the Meowscarada line! Tinkaton is probably my favorite from the gen as a whole though.
I saw Finizen and Palafin and immediately fell in love. They’re so stinking cute.
Tinkaton
Cyclizar
Garganacl
Iron Valiant
Chi-Yu
I fell in love with Tinkaton the second I saw it, though in general I think Gen 9 has a very strong lineup.
i couldn't resist the leaks and they made me laugh, i wanted to post a picture of flamigo somewhere without context
I was concerned if I'd like the Gen 9 Pokemon designs or not initially, but they've grown on me as I continued to play the game. Right now, my favorites have to be Sprigatito and its evos, Lokix, Baxcalibur, Ceruledge, Mabosstiff, Dachsbun, Tinkaton, Clogsire, Bellibolt, Finizen and Palafin, Pawmot, and Orthworm.
Scovillian for me. Didn't like Capsakid, but was absolutely delighted when I saw the evo!
Also a Tandemaus/Maushold fan.
Rabsca, Fuecoco, and Clodsire are my favorites so far
I love Fuecoco but Skeledirge is up there are one of the worst Pokémon for me. He was my worst but then I saw Gimmighoul’s evolution and that has it beat by a country mile. That thing has zero redeeming factors. Skeledirge at least has the cute bird.
Tandemouse just looks like a Funko Pop to me. Well, two Funko Pops.
I’ve been finding a lot of the ones this gen I really like the stage one form like Tarountula, the starters and Tadbulb. But they they just become massively unappealing when they evolve. This is easily the worst gen for me design wise.
But then Clodsire came along and saved me from tears. Clodsire is majestic. Clodsire is beauty. Clodsire is just the best!
FUECOCO

@majinx07
I felt the same about baxcalibur!
Even it's scream/call is reminiscent of a kaiju wannabe
Planning to stick with Legends Arceus for now, but there was one (It's name sounded something like tinkertoy) which was this adorable fairy carrying a gigantic sledgehammer. If I get this game(Requires the glitches getting patched and me 100%ing arceus) It is so going to be on my team.
I dont know but we can probably all agree that we are disappointed in what they did to Dunsparce. I expected him to evolve into a badass Dragon type and insted we got ..that
@Kiwi_Unlimited To me I believe his scream sounds very closely to Anguirus.
I love all these soo much!
I voted other
My personal favs from this gen are Gholdengo and Slither Wing even tho it’s just another form of Volcarona
Lokix is my man, what's not to like about a ninja grasshopper!
I love Maushold, but I hate the way that they handled its evolution, and I'm going to save Maushold for my Scarlet run so that I can experiment with the eggs and add the three member variant to my team (and only because its rarer, not because I particularly prefer it), and likewise with Dudunsparce and its three-segment form.
I really like Bombirdier's goofy design, but it's a disobedient little bugger because it was overlevelled when I caught it. I like Clodsire a whole lot more than Quagsire, but since capturing Finizen, I had to give it the boot, which is ironic because it gives me more type coverage compared to having both Meowscarada and Arboliva on my team.
I have way too many grass/flying/fighting types this time around, and my party keeps getting smoked by fire/ice/psychic types. I suppose the challenge is half of the fun.
For decades, I have been indifferent to the Mankey line, but I couldn't resist the allure of the awesomely-named Annihilape.
I really like the concept of the paradox Pokémon (I'm nowhere near completing the main game yet though), but I'm disappointed that they're all single-form and otherwise unrelated to the Pokémon they were inspired by, and are effectively akin to Ultra Beasts and other legendaries.
@C-Olimar I love that one too! It’s actually “ScoVILLAIN” though, not “Scovillian” — the animosity in the name is even more hilarious to me
Uh, flamigo anyone? It's literally just a flamingo that fights, I don't see how it could get any better.
Probably has to be Houndstone; it's just so macabre and camp, like something from The Munsters.
Scovillain probably, followed by chest form Gimmighoul. This generation has very strong designs, and is steadily becoming one of my favorites.
Tinkatink and its evolutionary line, is probably my favorite from gen 9.
One of my favorite designs if we're not counting starters is Greavard. It's too cute and loveable.
@ZeeZeeZerox I love The Munsters.
@Kiwi_Unlimited They look like cute little figurines.
@zander_dale Orthworm?
@tempestryke Orthworm! Or (Orthworm) Jim as mine is nicknamed...
@zander_dale Love the name! 👍
I think the entice Nacli line is now my second favorite line of all time. Falinks is still my favorite.
Tinkaton, no doubt. I was shocked it wasn't listed. Going by various communities for sv, including pokemon vg discords, Tinkaton is the most popular new pokemon by a huge margin. If the pokemon company put up a vote for this with Tinkaton on the list, she would win the vote. Behind that is Tandemaus and Roaring Moon which seem mentioned quite a bit, though not near as much as Tink.
