It seems that Switch OLED has got off to a strong start sales-wise, so many of you reading this must have picked up Nintendo's new console SKU over the last week or so. We're fans of the lovely new screen and the various refinements to the basic design that gives the consoles a marginally more premium feel over the trusty standard Switches we've been rocking for several years now.
Looking at Nintendo's marketing materials, you'd be forgiven for thinking that there's only one variant available — the one with the new white dock and Joy-Con — but there's also a version with the good old neon red and blue Joy-Con and a black dock for the Switch traditionalists and lovers of the OG hues.
A quick survey around the NL office shows the neon red/blue option was the less popular choice by a significant margin. In fact, only Darren — our sterling Ops Director — went for the boring classic option. He's already squirreled away the new controllers in the loft, too, presumably for when the analogue sticks on his fetching Skyward Sword Joy-Con pair start playing up:
Which Switch OLED did you pick up, though? We imagine most will have gone for the brand new variety just for a change, but we'd like to back up that assumption with some cold hard data from your lovely selves. Feel free to let us know in the poll below and perhaps make Daz feel a little less lonely in his life choices.

nOLED here! When my regular Switch breaks I will buy the OLED
@Zuljaras When?!
I would like the white one if I ever got around to buying one, but I don't feel the need to buy one at present.
I never liked the blue/red combo even with the old Switch so it's a pretty easy choice. The white looks really nice, especially with the white dock too.
I haven't bought one yet but I've been super tempted. Have ordered one and cancelled it before the payment went through twice so don't know how much longer I'll hold out for.
I didn't pre order. I want a gray joycon option, but it doesn't exist. I really don't want a white dock.
I look after my Switch so I reckon the next one I buy will be the upgraded one in a year or two.
White + additional pair of red/blue joy-cons.
Got the white version myself, but not using the white Joy-Con as prefer the colour of my Orange/Purple ones. Goes well with the white Dock too
@WoomyNNYes for me personally the transferring was a breeze. Everything works as before with no issues.
The white Joy-Con go really well with the Animal Crossing pastel coloured Joy-Con.
I haven't tried any other combinations yet though.
Stickin' with my Switch Classic! Still holding out for the Switch Pro!
Bought the white but actually didn’t realise the other one came with a black dock. Still, I like the white and black design. Looks sci-fi.
@Laserbeak1982 : Transferring was surprisingly quick for me too.
The only real annoying part was having to redownload everything and insert every physical cartridge to download the latest software updates, but all of that was completed overnight, so, no biggie.
Nothing smaller than a washing machine ever looks good in white, so red+blue for me. (If I ever bought one, which I probably won't.)
White supposing Walmart ever gets their pre order supply in.
I bought the white model
Truly happy for the 12 people who secured an oled switch
@WoomyNNYes I was dreading the transfer process, but it was surprisingly simple in the end. So long as you have both consoles to hand, you’ll be good. I used the very helpful NL guide.
As with most early OLED adopters, I went with the white option. It looks even better than I thought it would.
I have no need to upgrade and find the white quite bland. I hope Nintendo start doing more cool designs like the old days with the 3DS.
Might get this if a decent sale happens next year but perfectly happy with my day 1 Switch (which is hackable so will be extra handy when I finally upgrade/ lol)
My day one neon red/blue Switch is still fine, and I have a Lite for portable play, so I have no reason to get an OLED unless one kf the two others break one day, but if I do ever get one, I'd like to go for the white one
been having a hard time finding one
I got a ps5 on day one.
not sure why I can't find one
Won't buy it since I want better performance, not a better screen
(wouldn't mind better performance + better screen though)
I bought this one, much bigger screen upgrade:
Haven't gotten one, and not sure I will, but if I'd get one, it would be the white one, as I already have the neon version of the original model.
Given it was 12 people who managed to secure their OLED Switches I'm 1 of 2 that got classic red/blue version. Love it, and as I said before Nintendo makes toys, it should be playful and colorful. I have my white PS5 when I want to look all serious in front of my equally middle aged friends.
I went for Neon Blue/Red, but specifically because it comes with a black dock.
I didn't want the white dock, it wouldn't look right on my desk.
It happened that I already had a Neon Red/Blue pair of Joy-Cons, which means I now have the option of using a red pair or a blue pair.
I've left the mint-condition Joy-Cons in the box though, in case I need them. I'm currently using a lovely modded Atomic Purple pair with SNES style face buttons and a d-pad.
I got the Metroid Dread special edi… eh. The white one. Love it.
@Savino in my opinion it's worth the upgrade, especially if you play handheld a lot. It's not only the screen that's been updated, the whole build of the system is much more robust. My day 1 Switch felt very delicate in comparison. For example the new fan grate is much stronger with thicker plastic, so hopefully won't be prone to cracking or breaking off like previous.
I wanted a black dock, so I stayed with Red / Blue
@Savino the OLED is sooooo worth it. I was surprised at how much better it looked. Metroid dread looks better in handheld mode than it does on my LG CX (which is oled), and that’s saying something. Plus the screen size difference finally makes the switch no longer feel cramped.
I voted that I have got one when I haven't, just to mess up the results xx
Not getting the OLED since I have a perfectly functional Animal Crossing edition Switch I bought last year to replace my struggling launch-day unit. But I’d definitely go for the white one!
I got red/blue because my local Target has only received 2 white ones so far. They’ve gotten multiple shipments of the red/blue though.
I’m just gonna keep using my blue/blue Joy-Cons anyway.
Went white and black of course goes
Well in my entertainment centre.
Also got pro controller, wish they had done a special edition to match the console colouring.
I’ve never bought the mid generation upgrade and I don’t see that changing here, unless my current console has issues. The white is nice but I remember how dirty my white DS Lite got.
I got the red and blue since it was a last minute decision to buy and that was the only one the store had.
Would have preferred the white one.
Got the white one today, man that screen. I'm a happy boy.
My Switch spends 90% of its time on its stand making the new model entirely pointless for me, I have no real need for a handheld.
Nope, I didn't choose the Red and Blue so the other half wouldn't notice the upgrade... not me!
(And then mildly panic that the red and blue are on opposite sides !!)
@BenAV I love the white colors, I’m just afraid it’s gonna get stains easily or something
I prefer the OG one...with black dock, as I have many coloured joycon that I like to swap and change and the colourful ones (neon yellow etc) look awful with the white dock, and the red joycon look like Santa with it
The white OLED switch is looking good next to my PS5. Easier to convince the missus I need to buy more tech if I can colour coordinate it.
OLED people: anyone else find the colour to be really inconsistent at low brightness? I often play in a dark room and it flicks between very warm and very green as I make minor adjustments from minimum brightness (auto brightness off). Once it’s at about 10-15% on the slider it’s mostly consistent. Anyone else?
I have an OLED Vita so I know how great an OLED screen can be, but I held off because I rarely play Switch handheld.
Heck the few opportunities I've had lately to play handheld I've been more catching up on 3DS and Vita backlog.
I rarely play handhelds outside of traveling since I have a TV at home and don't take public transportation, and traveling hasnt happened much thanks to COVID. I've taken a couple family trips, sticking in high vaccine/low spread areas, but since I won't put my kids on airplanes until they're vaccinated I've only done road trips, and guess who drives.
Just pre ordered the white one. Didn't originally think it was worth it but once I have sold my old switch it shouldn't be too expensive.
Team nOLED here. Just imagine the Switch never launched in 2017 and had a "proper" generational entry with the Switch OLED being the first model. Seeing this makes me feel like we got the "Switch Beta" and the OLED was the real deal this whole time.
Daz has the right idea since some years down the line, that variant of the OLED might be difficult to find.
@Savino I had the launch model and I just upgraded to OLED and I definitely think it’s worth it if you play mostly handheld mode like I do. Also the thing I wasn’t expecting was just how much bigger the screen looks! I know it’s technically less than an inch but it makes a difference Maybe it’s the vibrancy of the colors and the light/dark contrast but it’s noticeably bigger than the OG switch to me. The build quality feels more solid to me as well. All that combined with the better battery life compared to the original are solid enough updates for only 50 dollars more for handheld players.
I got the classic neon colors. Was supposed to get the white ones but the store from where I bought mine ran out of stocks unfortunately. Still happy with my purchase tho.
@WoomyNNYes Your comment made me laugh because I bought an oled but havem't dare to transfer yet!
I like the white one but have no plans on buying one. As someone who never uses Switch handheld it doesn't benefit me in the slightest.
I got the Tyler Perry OhLurd model.
ended up with white myself
I’ve been a Switch owner since day one in 2017 and I probably play 95% of the time in docked mode. now that I’ve purchased the OLED model, I’ve been playing more in portable because, one, the screen is gorgeous, and two, to justify my purchase
So I walked into a GameStop yesterday and they had received 6 of the white ones before I got there. So, I took one of them off of their hands. That kind of thing never happens to me so I was really excited.
I think the white Switch is the best looking Nintendo console since the SNES. It's gorgeous.
The white joycon version, I already have the neon joycon controllers.
Got the neon blue/red. There's just something about white electronics i can't stand
Neither as I can’t find any in the US and will not pay scalper prices on eBay.
protip: https://www.satisfye.com/products/zengrip-oled
Neither waiting for the neXtGen Switch still..
I got the white joy-con version. I’m very happy with it so far, the screen is gorgeous (I primarily play in handheld mode) and load times in Odyssey definitely seem faster than in my original launch model Switch (if I go through a painting and skip the cutscene I don’t see the Odyssey scrolling along the bottom of the screen like a loading bar). Maybe that’s down to a newer Micro SD card or my old Switch being knackered though.
My launch model Switch didn’t manage to make it to OLED launch day as the fan completely failed three days before. So I did have fun fully dismantling it and putting in a new fan, replacing the thermal paste and putting a new red shell on it. It looks really good too!
@Zuljaras tbh by the time your Switch breaks, the successor will likely already be out. And it'd better be backwards compatible.
Bought the white one, managed to delete my Pokemon Let's go Pikachu save data during the transfer . But enjoying the OLED, the screen, the audio and QOL improvements. Kick-stand is leaps and bounds better. That's 5 switches in my house now, OG, Let's Go Edition, Animal Crossing Edition, Lite & OLED.
Thanks for putting in the options for “don’t have one yet, but would buy…”
I selected white because A.) I already have the blue/red OG switch and want something different, and B.) that white just looks newer/updated over the blue/red.
Now, if they made an official atomic (clear) purple set of joy cons… oooohhhh yeah I’d be all over that. That would look so cool docked with the new white dock!
Clear purple joy cons with a white dock. Awooga hubba hubba
I couldn't find one, but I really like the white joy-cons. Since the performance is the same, I am going to try and hold out for a more powerful Switch, if one ever comes out.
@Zuljaras Same. Honestly I thought that option would have more votes.
I'll stick with the original. My only reason for buying another one, would have been if they would have actually fixed the joycon drift.
The upgraded screen and audio is nice and all, but it's not enough to get me to buy a new system.
Nintendo! Just replace or fix the joy cons!!!!!
(If I did buy one, it would have been the WHITE one. It looks awesome!)
@ModdedInkling I’ll probably feel that way once the “Switch 2” lands. Like whatever that ends up being is the real deal and what they should have (or at least could have) launched with in 2017...
Nah, don’t mind the current Switch, just gotta stick to the well optimized games and skip the rest.
@Edwirichuu I'm pretty sure my Joy-Con will get ruined by drift or other issues long before potential stains become a problem, haha.
The 'PS 5witch' one looks better imo...
... but I mostly play docked so 'nOLED' it is for me.
What OLED? It’s out of stock everywhere
I'm getting the white one as it will display perfectly next to my PS5
The White version. Which does look ok in handheld mode, but when docked, the white dock looks out of place on my black TV stand with my black TV and satellite box.
If I could swap would I?
Yes.
@Brady1138 tis now.
There should be an option for both because I got each one
Not a fan of the white or neon tbh so might wait to see if they do any other colours…
I don't have one but would go for white between these options.
If I'm going to buy one though I'll probably want to opt for a special version that I'd really want. A Yoshi themed one would be best but there's others I'd be happy with.
white ! it's so beautiful
Will never get an OLED but the white joy cons look pretty smooth.
I'll go for white once it's in stock
@The_Pixel_King How does one transfer if you trade in your Lite towards the OLED to save $100 at Gamestop?
@BenAV Grab me one while you're at it since none are here 😅
@falkyn I'm buying one in preparation of getting the OLED
@Zuljaras
Same. Those 50,- more is worth it I think for a more premium feeling experience. If it breaks.
I've got it a month after launch it has hold up surprisingly well. How hard it might be to believe, my Joy-Cons don't even drift [Knocks on Wood] even though I use the Switch regularly and have no pro-controller.
@JustMonika Haha. They're still in stock on Amazon Australia so I can order one and have it delivered to my door in a couple of days. It's tempting and if it wasn't for the hassle of putting on a new screen protector (I never get them quite right) and transferring everything over again I probably would have grabbed one by now.
Haven't bought a Switch OLED yet, and probably won't, but if I did I'd go for the one with the red and blue joycons just like back in 2017 when I picked that color scheme over the gray ones for the standard Switch.
"nOLED" hah, I love. Like one previous person stated, I'll "upgrade" if/when my current Switch stops working. I do play my Switch in handheld, but I got the SMB edition Switch when it came out, so it still feels too soon for me to buy another one.
E.M.M.I/PS5 edition for me. I love the R/B splash of color, actually, but I've had that for 4 years already and I know they'll market the OLED with white going forward, so I'd feel a little left out if I stuck with a repeat.
@JAR3CK white + additional orange/purple joy cons
I wish the Mario Switch was OLED. That was the one I wanted. Truth is the white Dock would not look as good in my living room. My wife would hate it, and so she doesn't even realise it is the upgraded one.
I got the white one, love it.
Fast RMX is finally workable in handheld 😃
Where's the don't have one, don't want one option?
The white one. It just looks sleek.
@BenAV True, but what worries me is the dock getting dirty, with white it'd be pretty noticeable, ever see the dust that accumulates on the charging thing?
White.
My preferred combination would have been a black dock with white JoyCon but. Never really liked the blue and red combo which is why I didn’t go with that and originally I had the grey unit but have been using either neon yellow or neon red JoyCon for the most part.
Got the white one for my Kiddo. I’m sticking with my Mario Edition.
I will upgrade in a year or two from the 2017 Nintendo Switch, going for the white one which will be mine, the family one will still be the og switch
Team nOLED here, unless, like I've stated time and again, I can find an OLED switch tablet separately [for a reasonable price].
I’m getting myself one as a belated birthday present to myself. I asked for giftcards and am now waiting to see what my dad is getting me (usually sends money)…then I should have enough to get one. I mostly play in handheld mode anyways.
@Zuljaras A self fulling prophecy!?
I'll be upgrading to the white one shortly. My joycons are almost all acting up, so I would rather sell my old Switch and get the new console rather than pay $80 for joycons alone. (I know, I'm part of the problem.)
Sold my (allmost MINT, as I look after my things) V2 before the price drop and got a white OLED for only additional 35€.
And the display ist awesome. I play 99% in handheld mode.
@Zuljaras Same
I got the white, but using the skyward sword joycons.
If I was a handheld player, I would have absolutely jumped on the classic neon red/blue. The OLED screen really makes a difference. I primarily play on my OLED 4K HDTV so I did not upgrade.
Where can you buy one when the scalpers bought most of them, and it's sold out everywhere?
I went with the white Swoled to eventually sit alongside the PS5 I’ve stashed away for the kids Christmas present!😊
I sold my launch v1 switch, it was the neon red/blue. Still love that colour combo, but I still got the splatoon pink/green joycons too.
@Ogoalie30 in a year or two they’ll probably be doing different colour combos or a totally new console as part of the switch family
Ordered the Classic, shipping from Canada at a slight premium. I hate to say this at all, but it's nice to see that the average price on ebay is not astronomical compared to say... GPUs. In most cases, seems like a reasonable finders fee, which is totally debatable, sure. I think I ultimately paid like $70 more than retail, which is still kinda dumb maybe. Don't do that if you can help it. Also, I had no interest in this until I recently upgraded my PC monitor to a LG C1 OLED. It ruined me. Beware, your wallet.
Anyway, I'm gonna give my original Switch with the new red and blue joycons to my guitarist (he will trade me back my old Lite) and keep my not so old purple and orange ones, which I prefer (Suns fan). <3
The $650 one by Valve. Yeah, I had already put in my dedication by reserving a Steam Deck by the time the Switch OLED was announced, so by that time it was too late. At the same time, the versatility of the Steam Deck (ability to play PC games handheld, dock to a monitor and mouse/keyboard to use as a traditional desktop PC and play the games as they were meant to be played, or docked to a TV using a standard game controller just like a regular console) sold me on it.
On the other hand the Switch OLED's standout features and "improvements" did not impress me, and came off as more of a pathetic joke. This is made even worse by the fact that I use my Switch practically 100% of the time docked like a traditional home console with a pro controller, and there are literally no real upgrades in that circumstance.
If I did get one though, it would be the white model--I normally don't like white electronics, but I do like the black/white contrast of that model.
@UltraZelda64
I also preordered Steam Deck- it's a cool device and I'm very excited. It's not pocketable like Switch, battery won't last as long, no OLED, no tabletop and switching between TV and handheld won't be as fast and fluid, and it's way heavier, but for big AAA games that Switch can't run or can't run well, it's the perfect compliment. As a Win 2 owner I've always wanted something like this.
As for OLED, I can assure you it's no joke. I got the white one and the superior screen is incredibly impressive. It's hard to go back to LCD once you experience games on an OLED handheld. And the kickstand is a small change but one with a major impact on the experience. And, it gets 1 Hour extra battery life on max brightness in Zelda BotW vs the v2 model, which already nearly doubled the playtime from v1. So at a bare minimum on max brightness in a AAA game you get 5.3 hrs, vs 4.25 hrs on v2 and 2.75 hrs on v1. That's insane.
If you're docked only, there's no reason to upgrade. But the OLED model is a very noticeable upgrade from the previous iteration. I can't help but feel disappointed the Deck will be using a standard LCD display.
Got the white one as for a premium $350 product, especially with an OLED screen, the neon looked to childish for me.
@WoomyNNYes get one and use the grey ones from older switch
Neither I am broke after buying a tv for my room to motivate myself to play more Gamecube.
@KJW90 a maverick! A trailblazer! Another complimentary descriptor we use when we're amazed!
