If you hadn't already guessed, we on Team Nintendo Life love a bit of physical media. Yes, the convenience of downloading a game from the eShop is unbeatable, but if we have the chance to get one of those red-spined boxes on our shelves, we'll take it. We do have one insistence, though: those boxes have to come with a cartridge inside.
Well of course you need your cartridge, that's the most important bit, you might say, but it turns out that there have recently been multiple instances of customers buying a physical Switch game only for the box to arrive with the cart slot empty.
To be clear, we are not talking about code-in-a-box physicals here, but boxed copies that should have a cart inside. Take the following tweet from artist and game designer Ste Pickford (formally of Rare and Software Creations), where he shows that his copy of Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration — a standard physical release that was not code-in-a-box — arrived fully wrapped, but cart-less.
In fact, as Pickford writes, this is not the first time that this has happened. Taking a browse through Twitter, it appears that there is currently a scam prevalent on online stores (particularly Amazon, it seems) where certain customers are removing a game's wrapping, taking the cart and then carefully re-wrapping the box to send it back to the store for a refund as if nothing ever happened. These tampered-with boxes are assumed to be in perfect condition and are subsequently put up for resale where they are sent out to the next customer without the all-important cart in tow.
It's a trick that has been around for a while and is by no means unique to copies of Atari 50 — @RetroGamer_Daz stated it happened to him with a copy of TMNT: Cowabunga Collection, @PaulWasAllTaken with No Man's Sky — but that doesn't make the scam any less annoying. We buy physical media for a whole variety of reasons (preservation, collections etc.) but without the cart itself, what's the point?
What's more, it is becoming increasingly difficult to spot. Pickford notes in his thread that Switch games often come in Nintendo-branded cellophane, but this isn't always the case. Replying to the original story, @Lutzoid shows an unboxing of another Atari 50 box (also in clear cellophane and without the Nintendo 'band' strap around the middle), but this one came with the cartridge. How do you know if you've bought the real deal? You don't, it seems.
So, we thought that we would put the topic out to you lovely lot and find out just how widespread of an issue this is. Has a similar scam ever happened to you? You can fill out the following poll to let us know.
Have you ever ordered a physical game that came with the cart missing? (4,246 votes)
- Yes, it happened to me just recently
- Yes, but only a long time ago
- It happened to a friend of mine
- Nope, thankfully
- I never buy physical copies
Which game did you miss out on through a scam like this? Do you know of any telltale signs to spot a tampered-with box? Let us know in the comments.

"Nope, thankfully"
But i ordered only FP Nintendo Games !
With the exception of two games that were generous gifts (Metroid Dread and Fire Emblem Engage) my Switch collection is 100% digital. So, thankfully, I’ve not experienced this. Absolutely horrible for those who have though.
Never had this happen. It doesn't surprise me, coming from Atari, though. They've really made a reputation for themselves in my eyes as delivering really shoddy products.
Edit: People are correcting me that this is fraudulent Amazon sellers resealing empty cases and not a manufacturing error. I only skimmed the article and overlooked where it discusses the Amazon scam. My mistake, although in my defense, it takes a good while for the article to get to that point. I had to look over it a good few times before I even caught that. My statement about disliking Atari still stands, though, and I wouldn't have been surprised if they were accidentally sending out empty cases. I don't quite hate then enough to think they would do it deliberately, though.
Yesss, finally is someone talking about it!
It happened twice! Ordered from Amazon.de, the games where sealed in original case but with no card inside.
I dont know anything about the production bit it's been Sega games concerning Sonic.
All Stars Racing and i think Sega Mega Drive Collection.
I am very, very lucky this has never happened to me.
But it's also been a few months since I've bought a physical game that released this year.
Not happened to me yet thankfully. I noticed the article mentions Amazon particular (though not exclusively), so perhaps that is why I have not had this happen yet; most of my games come from other online shops, primarily TheGameCollection but also GAME and ShopTo, or I pick them up in person.
A year ago I ordered a game on Amazon and it came without a cartridge. I returned it and they got me one with a cartridge quickly.
Happened to me with Origami King.
I got Cave Story from amazon without a cartridge. Still had all the extras inside that the physical comes with. Amazon gave me a refund but let me keep the box and manuals. The game went half price on the eshop a week later so I got it then
A long time ago, I got Diablo 2 for PC, back when you had disks for your PC games. Box was completely empty.
GAME gave me a replacement.
Happened to me. Amazon UK. Blaster Master Zero, LRG. It was like pulling teeth to get them to believe me. Very painful experience because they think you're trying to pull a fast one. Eventually got my money and haven't ordered from Amazon UK since
I'm maybe wrong, but I always thought the cellophane with the Nintendo Seal strap was only for games where Nintendo is at least the publisher in the region.
At the very least I don't think I ever saw a new sealed game not published by them having it, no matter the store where I bought it.
When I preordered skyward sword for switch, they sent me all the freebies and the steelbook, but not the game and the plastic game box! Took nearly a week to finally get my hands on it. I was given “reward points” as compo!
The poll needs another option - 'Not that I'm aware of' - for all the hoarders like me sitting on hundreds of sealed games.
I've certainly bought Atari 50 from Amazon but not opened it yet, so maybe I'll hunt it down.
This isn't just a ruse to get me to unseal all my potentially valuable sealed games of the future, is it?
I have hundreds of Switch games bought from all over but no issues like that on my end as of yet.
@Not_Soos What has this got to do with Atari? It's a scam by Amazon customers, who'll reseal the game.
Never (not yet) thankfully.
What did happen to me 7 times in the last year is ordering a physical game online, getting 25 emails from the post office that they're on their way, time frame, delay, blabla ... until the email that states "it has been delivered in your mailbox at hh:mm specific time" and there is no games delivered to my mailbox. Have to wait one week, they resend it, then all those emails again and the second time I always get it.
Regarding this article, I don't think it should be difficult for Amazon or the likes to trace back the person that sent the gamebox back empty. How is this becoming a "thing", like many people are doing this now or ..?
Christmas 2021, my brand new copy of TWEWY on Switch from Amazon had this exact issue! Made for an interesting Christmas morning...
Thankfully no, but usually get my games from either Argos or the game collection. I rarely get them from Amazon.
@BakaKnight absolutely right, only Nintendo games have the Nintendo pull strip.
If you are buying pre-owned physical games or accessories online, don't buy it from Amazon. Buy it on eBay and from seller that had genuine photos of the product, not stock pictures which could be edit or mislead. Amazon only use stock pictures so you often don't get the same product you see advertised most of the time for example you may ordered what you saw was a PS5 Dual Sense controller only to be shipped a PS4 Dual Shock controller as the info list the product as compatible with both PS4 and PS5. That is how they get you. Also be wary and make sure to read every little details on the product such as the title and descriptions they had online cause there are some customers who only sell just the case, the box, or the cart and not all of em.
As for does this ever happen to me a similar situation did occurred but I think it happened by accident. The seller on Amazon was selling me a used copy of Dragon Quest VIII for PS2, the product did arrive but inside the case was not the Dragon Quest VIII disc, instead it was a copy of Silent Hill 2. I message back the seller and he said he probably forgot to take the game out of his PS2 before shipping so he'll ship me the actual DQVIII game and once I receive it I could ship him back Silent Hill 2. It turns out the last time he play DQVIII was after he play Silent Hill 2 and whenever he play a certain game, he often put the ones he don't play inside the game he did play's case. Anyways the exchange went well and was resolve.
What's not resolve is that we still don't had remastered version of these two games for modern platforms, c'mon Square Enix and Konami you want money remastered these two games.
Never and, judging from the results, it doesn’t seem very common. Sucks for it to happen though.
@Not_Soos Doesn't sound like it's an Atari situation. But a online retail issue due to a scam. At least that seems to be the issue in this case
Has not happened to me, but I'm not surprised that it's mostly occurring on Amazon. These days I rarely buy any games there anyway.
I only bought two games physically: Pokemon Brillant Diamond and Mario 3D collection (still sealed). Pokemon had the cart like it should and it's still in my Switch. Otherwise, I'm digital only if it's not a retro game.
Happened to me once, still in the first year of the Switch. My copy of Rayman Legends came without the cartridge but the plastic was damaged, I suspect the cartridge was stolen at some point. I had no problem exchanging it at the store where I ordered it (I bought it online, but it is a store that has a physical unit in my city). The only problem is that they ran out of copies and I had to get another game.
@gcunit No need to unseal. The boxes are transparent so it's very easy to see if theres a card inside by looking through the bottom end of the box.
The opposite happened to me. I ordered a copy of Mario Kart to replace one lost by some brat or another at my house - and Amazon sent me MK8 plus a shrink wrapped copy of the Raystorm collection. They never said anything and neither did I.
Providence visited me last month, aye.
What the f*** is wrong with some people...
Sadly I check before opening the cellophane. Hold the box up to light and look through the bottom. You will see the cart if there is one in there. Unfortunately there have been a couple instances online where someone got a 3D printed size game cart in the case so this isn’t foolproof.
I got my brother Octopath Traveler for his birthday back in 2018, and what an absolute gut-punch for him to open his gift and NO CART being in it. Of course the store wouldn't let us return it since how could we possibly have proved it wasn't in there.
My brother now films himself opening every game he gets lol
Yeah, I ordered Bioshock Collection on the Switch which was meant to be the cart version but got sent the code in a box version instead. Code in a box releases are an abomination.
I made a thread similar to this recently where I ordered brand new games and they came unsealed. To be fair mine had the games in, but who's to say that someone didn't buy the game, download it onto their pc somehow (is that possible please let me know) and then send it back.
My local Facebook marketplace has people selling switch games - just the cartridge - and often they have pretty big selections. I’m thinking maybe there’s a connection here…
Never had this happen and thank god too, seems like it’d be a hard thing to prove.
As for Nintendo seals, I’ve had loads of games that don’t have them. I have sealed copies of Ni no Kuni (EU version) and Katamari Damacy (US version) and neither have the Nintendo seal. My US copy of Cave Story was wrapped in a plastic that didn’t feel like any other sealed game I’ve ever bought. Seems like unless it’s published/distributed by Nintendo it’s up to third parties to seal copies themselves
Nope thankfully, although I ordered a s dvd set of a Family Guy season years ago that came with no dvds unfortunately.
I've got like 8 unopened games at home I should probably check now...
So I believe that - contrary to what you might expect - publishers have to order cartridges and boxes and labels individually from Nintendo and then pack&seal them themselves. So we might just be dealing with a law of averages here; more manual packing (by people who aren't used to doing it) than maybe we're used to from earlier systems, so more overall mistakes.
Sounds like you just shouldn’t order from Amazon, where their return process is so broken.
@Not_Soos remind me how that’s Atari’s fault again? The scam works by people getting the game, taking the cartridge and wrapping it back up again before sending it back for a refund. So nothing to do with Atari.
Never had this happen with games. Closest to something like this happening was when I bought my mother-in-law a Firestick. I had just gotten home a few minutes after it was delivered and had gotten the delivery notification from UPS. The package looked like a bear had gotten ahold of it and shoddily tried to tape it all back together. Sure enough, there was no Firestick inside. I assumed either the driver took it or they didn't think anything of delivering a package that had clearly been tampered with. Ultimately, I got it all settled with UPS and Best Buy and got a refund.
It's never happened to me, but I'm not going to be thankful about it lol. It's bloody standard!
Thankfully, I’ve never had this happen, except for when I intentionally ordered a box-only copy of Link’s Awakening for Switch to replace a terrible CeX reprinted box.
I guess someone REALLY wanted to know what Atari tastes like
I ordered Ty the Tasmanian Tiger 1 & 2 plus boomerang USB from Amazon a couple of weeks ago. There wasn’t a cellophane wrap around it and the game card was missing. The download code for the second game was there (as expected) and the boomerang. Amazon obviously sorted it and all is now well!
I have a lot of still sealed games, or a lot of still sealed empty boxes. The article makes it sound like it is only non-Nintendo sealed games though?
@Nintendencies Unless they had a rom dumper or a clever counterfeit machine, I don't think those games you got are fake. They probably are just new games but unsealed. In that case they should had listed as like new and not new. New means it should be unopened and still sealed.
No, but once I ordered a Switch game and when I put it to my tongue discovered that the previous owner had already licked all the Switch card flavor off of it. Disappointing.
@gcunit seriously. I am now looking at my sealed games with concern
@JohnnyLew
I can totally understand that. Amazon.de returns was great, so in both cases they didn't even ask "why" - however every local store etc, I go I always open the game immediately without hesitation. Of course they do not want your return because of their retail profit margin - If you don't have infinite money supply you should really do it like this... filming opening stuff, especially with cheaper third party games like sonic, rayman, etc. because it seams to be more common there
Never buy from Amazon. Noted.
@Grumblevolcano you may as well have bought it on the eshop on sale. Only the beginning of all three titles is on the cart, massive download required to get anywhere near halfway through any of the games.
No, this hasn't happened to me because I get new Games on Launch Day, either from GAME or the MyNintendo site.
Secondhand Games come from either GAME or CEx and I always ask the cashier if I can check the gold chip for damage, therefore I KNOW the game card is in the case.
Happened to me a few years ago around the Xmas time. The game arrived fully sealed, but I noticed part of the seal by the opening latch was cut .. I guessed they used a small knife or rod to pop the game out & shake it free through the gap.
The mail order company replaced it no questions asked
How many sealed rated games are sat out there with no media in them? I guess it doesn't matter if the sealed condition is what people want.
I haven't, but I do remember a time where I got a copy of Gran Turismo that didn't come with the game. I had to trade it in for Pong and Shrek 2.
Does it count if I've bought BestBuy exclusive covers from Limited Run Games for $5, knowing they don't include a game? No? Yeah I didn't think so.
That said, I've got a SteelBook copy of Atari 50 still sealed, I'd better check if there's actually a game card in there...
Incidentally, don't let the game update, it actually removes a software title from the game library.
Edit: Opened it up, and sure enough the game card was in there, phew.
I've experienced this once over the years. When multiple disk games were more common I've had a repeat of one of the disks. I had this with PS1 FFVIII and Xbox 360 Lost Odyssey. Really annoying if you don't notice immediately and the returns windows has past. Forever trapped at the end of disk 2 😞
Out of the roughly 1,500 physical games I've bought for Switch this hasn't happened once.
As far as I remember all physical games I bought came with a Nintendo seal (the Nintendo logo on the pull strip). That might be a Europe thing but it had been like that since the DS era
Just once, I got a sealed empty box of "Little Nightmares" from Amazon.es . Asked for a refund and got it at local FNAC store. I can only assume this happens in several units of a bad batch that will only get discovered once the customer gets the box.
well if you buy used games at gamestop you know the cart will have the game inside as you can check after you buy the games
Idk, but, people know the Cases of Switch games are See-Through on the bottom right? Whenever i get a game, i always check the bottom to see if its actually inside before i either open it, or put it on my Shelf.
PS4 are different thou, but shaking the case helps hearing if a disc is inside, it does a unique sound.
I imagine someone X-Acto knifing these games open next to a pallet of Majora's Mask 3DSes, Fire Emblem Fates Special Editions and Pyra/Mythra Amiibos.
Actually it hapenned to a lot of people here in Portugal, and not just from online stores like amazon, but retail too. I know cases of this since the switch launch that people share in our Portuguese switch group. That's why everytime I go to buy a game I always check the transparent side of the box to see if I can spot the black cartridge. There was one time that I was pretty sure that the box has no game.
Has happened to me once when ordering a game online and of course of all games, it WOULD happen with one as weird as Deadly Premonition.
OH MY WORD THIS HAPPENED TO ME LAST WEEK. I bought Xenoblade 3 (last copy) at Walmart since it was $45, and when I got home I opened the case to an empty cartridge. After battling Walmart for like an hour I got my money back, but it was very confusing and stressful. Some of the employees even said that this was happening with other Switch games as well. Can't help but wonder how widespread of an issue this is.
I did once, for Wolfenstein Youngblood...never again.
If Publishers can't respect and support us, as consumers wanting a physical cart, then we shouldn't support them.
I did once for the 3ds Donkey Kong vs Mario one with the toys. But it was dirt cheap, it was clearly marked as code only, and it was my choice
Good to know. I rarely buy from Amazon, but now I’ll stop purchasing from them altogether.
Happened to me ordering Pokemon Shield from Amazon. Actually had to exchange it TWICE before they finally sent one with the cart inside.
Nope, thankfully... one more reason other than discounts for me to buy as many physical games as possible form my trusty retailer's site here in Italy instead of others!
Yes, happened with my copy of Hyrule Warriors. Only mine had no wrapping AT ALL. It was just the box, no game. Thankfully I sent it back and Amazon sent me another copy, no hassle.
I've heard it happen to people. I've also seen a few reviews on Amazon UK share that too. I really hope people do get it sorted out and get their games.
Thankfully that's not happened to me. I have used Amazon on quite a few games and they did come with the cartridge.
I've used Nintendo Store UK and been okay.
With Ebay I've also been lucky there. I DID get a game posted/sent off weeks later then they should've but that's different. With Ebay, I always check the reputation from customers carefully.
I have had this happen to me a few years ago. There was a non-obvious cut in the side of the shrink wrap where the game had been slipped out.
The unfortunate thing is that it was an xmas gift for my son and we didn't notice until after he opened it that morning.
@evan23 Ouch.
yes, the shipping box was in good condition and not damaged at all.
inside was a game case that was ridiculously smashed and shattered and not game cartridge to be found anywhere.
No cellophane at all either.
Not happened to me, thankfully. Ironically, I did get a copy of Atari 50 from Amazon UK too, only around a month or so back and it arrived sealed but was fine and had the cart inside. I buy almost all my games physically from various sites including Amazon, but mostly I buy the games I want at launch so if some people are scamming and returning empty sealed boxes back for refunds, I'll usually always already have my copy by then.
Personally, I'd absolutely hate to just have loose Switch carts without their cases though.
Never had this happen to me thankfully, I'd be really frustrated if it ever did.
I’ve only had this happen to me once from an order on Amazon. It wasn’t a Switch game but rather a 3DS game. I had ordered Pokémon Alpha Sapphire a couple years back as a new copy sold and shipped directly from Amazon. The game case came in and had no cellophane wrapping at all and the game was missing. Amazon sent me a replacement right away and I sent them their empty box, I always assumed it was somebody in the warehouse that saw the opportunity to steal it out of the packaging without being seen
A month ago this happened to me.
Ordered sonic origins, and someone had been in it and stole the cart.
They had carefully peeled the wrapping to extract it.
I noticed straight away to be fair.
Amazon sent another copy out the next day.
So I now have 2 boxes and one cart between them.
Once...
Ordered "Ninja Warriors" for Switch
Amazon said "only 5 available... Shipped and sold by Amazon"
What came was a wrapped game, full original NTSC wrapping with no tear whatsoever.. except for a round 2" diameter fully transparent sticker covering the notch on the right side where you open a normal case.
Someone had already opened the game, carefully removed the cart and placed the sticker on the near perfect original wrap with no bubbles, you couldn't notice it at first glance.
I later checked Amazon feedback left by others and found a couple of people reporting the same issue.
Not widespread but not an unique event.
I have nothing but first party Nintendo titles on cartridge. No empty cases, though a few I are still sealed.
Can probably tell by shaking the case.
@Darthmoogle Amazon has very strict standards for hiring: one must have a pulse.
Years ago, I received a copy of the original Mario+Rabbids game for my birthday. It was factory sealed and everything. When I opened it, no cartridge. It was ordered from Amazon, so a new copy was sent out, and the replacement did indeed have a cartridge.
I only buy Switch games second hand so thankfully this has never Been a problem for me, although 1 time Cex forgot to put the disk in a PS5 case. Luckily I opened it in the store to put the receipt in the box and noticed before leaving.
Had something like this happen to me at Target a couple months ago. I bought Super Mario 3D World/Bowser's Fury, brought it home, opened the box and there was a grey plastic cartridge in there with the game label, but it had no chip on it. Like it was just a blank grey cartridge. So weird. Took it back and before I could even finish my sentence, the guy in the electronics section said it had happened to somebody else that week and they let me get another copy.
Buying any piece of physical Media from Amazon is a huge risk for me. Usually the box will come 1-5% damaged which is too much for my ocd.
I remember when Starlink came out, there was more reports than ever of missing cartridges. Worker at Best Buy was kind enough to allow me to check; low and behold, it was missing - sealed!
Never had that happen.
It should be easy to verify if there is at least a game cartridge present or not without having to remove the sealed wrap. I have a couple of sealed games and I can clearly see a game cartridge through the transparent sides of the box.
I've bought games from Amazon, never encountered this issue before. Tho I only bought 1 new game for the switch, which was Xenoblade chronicles 3. Was pre-ordered, so might be why. Other games I got were used games.
Weird and sucky. I'd definitely demand my money back and make a complaint.
@groo1999 That's a good tip
I haven't had this happen with a Switch game, but I did have it happen a long time ago with Red Dead Redemption for the PS3
I've seen complaints about this on Amazon reviews for Civilization VI. So it's the only game on Switch I have ever purchased used, just so that I can be sure the card is in there.
TOTK Collector's Edition, so recently
Although the web store didn't mention it explicitly, the price (15 euros below RRP) already indicated "second-hand". I don't mind buying 2nd hand stuff, as long as it's in good condition. (I have Link's Awakening collector's edition 2nd hand.)
The box looked quite worn on arrival. Someone had clearly opened it before and done a clumsy job of repacking everything. But the art book was still shrink-wrapped and the steel poster looked in mint condition, so I still had a good feeling about it. But opening the steel and plastic cases revealed there was no cartridge. Then, I also realized that the pin set was missing.
Returned it immediately, got an e-mail a few days later that the "cartridge was missing", asking me to send it back. Explained the situation (again) and then finally got my money back. Really, if I wanted to get the game for free, I would have just run the scam with the regular edition. Much less risk.
Anyway, I haven't lost my faith. Ordering the collector's edition tonight, before they become too rare. This time in new condition. I love this game so much.
Never had an empty game box but I did have the wrong game in the cartridge.
I bought TMNT II: The Arcade Game on NES years ago when I was a kid from a used game store. I was excited because I always wanted it. You can imagine how upset I was when I got home popped the cartridge in and it was Kid Icarus. I was able to return it but sadly they didn't have another copy of TMNT II so I got another game or my money back.
Didn't end up getting TMNT II on cartridge till years later about 7 years ago or so and then of course on the Cowabunga Collection.
I had this happen to me, I pre-ordered rogue squadron 2 on GameCube from toys r us. Picked it up day 1 and got home to find no disk, went back to the store but they had no additional copies. They put a hold on a copy in the next shipment, I was devastated as my brand new GameCube sat empty for 10 days
Had it with a final fantasy game i ordered on amazon, they just made a small cut in the side were you open the game. was still an official wrap on it just a lil cut to get some tweezers in to get out the card i guess. Amazon just refunded me and i ordered something else. Nowadays i just order through game stores. pay a bit more but less hassle.
I have either never had a game with "Nintendo cellophane" or I never noticed.
Dang, that sucks.
Luckily for me, I live within a 15 minute walking distance of a Gamestop, PNP Games and worst case scenario a Wal-Mart, so I very rarely order games off of Amazon.
Actually yes, about a year or two ago, the plastic wrap was broken into and the game was missing. Amazon sent me a new copy so now I have two boxes of Assassins Creed Black Flag…
Funny part is both are empty, because it was a Christmas gift for my brother, and he took the game and left the empty box in my house!
I used to work in hotels and people did this with minibar items - tea in a whisky bottle, folded cardboard in chocolate wrappers. Seems like a lot of work for a small return!
Yes, I bought a factory sealed Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Rescue Team DX game from Target in the morning on release day, and brought it home and opened it and it was empty. Thankfully they were very kind at Target to let me get one WITH a game. Ever since then, I check every single physical game I buy before opening it, by tilting it sideways with a light source behind it, to see if the cartridge is in there. Nintendo thankfully made these switch boxes mostly transparent so I can see that. I wish they were more transparent though because it’s a bit of a pain to try to see the cartridge in them. You should literally be able to see at a glance if the cartridge is inside, like when you buy a memory card and those packages clearly show it.
Happened to me with Metroid Dread. Took it back to the Walmart where I had gotten it and it was pretty obvious that they did not believe my story of a sealed game with no cart inside. Made it pretty satisfying when they insisted on opening the replacement before I left yhe store and it was also missing a cart (there was an audible gasp from the customer in line behind me). Fortunately, third time was the charm so I was able to leave with the game.
Hasn't happened to me yet, but I peek through the side of the case to see if a cart is sitting in the holder before I unseal it.
@Luke937 Can't say I've had too many damaged game cases from Amazon, and we must have ordered a few over the last twenty years or so.... We did buy a second hand switch lite off Vinted a couple of weeks back that was shipped purely in a folded plastic carrier bag with some sellotape around it. We heard the noise of the postman shoving it through the letter box, miraculously it was in one piece!
Yeah, my dad bought a copy of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater for the Switch, and it cam without the game, we ended up buying it digitally for PS5 later on.
I don't believe this has ever happened to me. Very lucky if true!!
The Nintendo branded cellophane must be a regional thing. Here in the United States, I've only seen Switch games (including first party games) wrapped in clear cellophane with no logo. I even have 5 still-wrapped games right now, 3 of which are first party, and they are all perfectly clear cellophane (with the exception of Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, which has a pink sticker on it indicating it's a launch edition copy).
Now I'm paranoid that it's going to happen to me.
@ZealMajin That's smart. I just checked all of mine and it looks like they all have cartridges in them. Stores should start doing this before they accept returns
MariNo Cart? Not your best work guys. Hahaha (it made me groan like dad joke levels)
Nope. Without cartridge it's useless.
It did happen to me by accident. The clerk for a gamestop accidently put the wrong game cartridge in the case. Was able to swap the cartridge for the actual game at no charge.
thankfully never happened to me, although when I do order from Amazon I always check to make sure that it is both sold and dispatched from them.
This has never happened to me with any game, but I've heard of it happening now and again to some people. I don't believe it's a scam, though. I think it's a manufacturing error. Someone I know bought a PS3 game and it was clearly factory sealed and brand new, but there was no disc inside. When he contacted EA (the publisher) they didn't even blink. It's just "something that happens."
I haven't had a cartridge missing but I have purchased a empty case with the artwork on ebay to replace one a dog chewed up.
Yeah, ordered a copy of Penguin Wars on Amazon & got an empty case. Luckily, they sent the game after notifying.
Also happened while physically buying a game at a GameStop once. Long line, people not in the line asking the guys at the register questions. Basically turned things into a shell game. Realized it hours later but had receipt, so was also resolved.
I bought the fire emblem divine edition from Amazon. It was listed as new. Shipped and sold from Amazon. It arrived opened and with no game case or game. I think people order games, take out what they want, then return the product as never opened. So Amazon takes their word and resells the game as new.
Hasn’t happened to me. But I have purchased the 3DS remake of DQVIII and received DQVII instead, I already had DQVII.
Boooo to the 4% who never buy physical games lol
Anyone else noticed the Breath of the Wild Expansion Pass Switch case on that pile? Is that really a thing?! 😲
Never happened to me but 90% of my collection I've bought the day it came out so probably no chance of it being a return.
Please allow me to take my general Amazon XP and extrapolate:
1. AZ doesn't care about your satisfaction;
2. They will TOTALLY and RADLY sell you someone else's returned *****;
3. I have been the recipient of such. An Apple Watch leather band, drenched in - I'm sorry - Albanian levels of cologne concentration, came to my house as "new". Are you kidding me? Let me slight the Greeks here as well - same degree of over-cologne-ization...
4. Also, Moldavians...
5. If I haven't offended you enough, the whole damn Eastern Bloc = "Dude, one squirt is enough"...
6. Back to topic, Amazon will sell you someone else's disgusting cast-offs without remorse. Return it again! Forget VGs, I've experienced this with goods exceeding $500 in value. AZ does not care. And the Nomads make it worse. Happy Hunting!!!
Note/Edit. I feel I should provide some back-up for my totally accurate claims. I frequented certain establishments in Boston, during the mid to late 90's, that were overwhelmingly populated with Eastern Bloc visitors. Pravda, being one. Also, I have taken several cruises where the mid to old Greek gentlemen essentially squatted in the best part of the pool. These dudes will suffocate you with their cologne, I am not exaggerating..
Also, enough with the Speedos. EUROPE - NO ONE wants to see that ... Christ...
Can you weigh them on a scale before opening or is the cart too light to determine if it’s in or not?
Yes, this happened to me once. I got a sealed copy of Slay the Spire from Amazon and yup, the box was empty. I figured it was something shady like this, so I do not order from Amazon anymore. Trying to shop more local.
No, never, but a few of them did not come with a booklet.
@ZealMajin When it happened to me there was some black foam in the cart spot to make it look like there was a game if you look in through the side, so probably good to give it a shake before opening too
I actually had it happen where the seller sent an empty envelope. It took weeks to prove that nothing was sent.
Amazon is one of the worst companies and the worst place to shop in the whole wide world. Im not surprised
This happened to me with Pokémon Violet when I got it off of Amazon! It was even a preorder. It did come a day late, so I didn’t get it on launch day, but I did order well before it came out.
My girlfriend bought me Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity but I didn't get round to playing it till months later, only to find there was no cartridge in the box. I thought surely I wouldn't have taken the cartridge out for any reason before then, so I'm sort of glad this is a recognised phenomenon, maybe I'm not crazy after all.
Thankfully not
This happened to me when I bought a used copy of Arkanoid from an Amazon reseller. Fortunately, Amazon replaced it with a new and sealed one.
Ordered Super Mario Party for my sons birthday in May, and the cartridge was missing. It was ordered from Adorama.
I had this happen with a Vita game once.
I bought a copy of mario all stars trilogy in physical from nintendo and then the day it came out it automatically started downloading on my console. I called/emailed them stating I dont want a digital version and their attitude was horrendous, their reasoning was they had ran out of stock of physical and so sent me a digital version instead. I’ve actually never bought a game from nintendo since then, I now only buy pre owned and was tempted to go fully pirate after that but didnt.
The only time this ever happened to me was when I got the big RE2 Remake collectors edition on PS4
Received everything except the disk itself was missing from the case.
Took Capcom like another 3 weeks to get me that disk.
Never happened to me.
I did once order a Streetlight Manifesto album on CD from amazon that came plastic wrapped with no disc. Cheers pal👍
@AcridSkull
Even then, not all, my TOTK arrived without Ninty sealing on release day, so the very first post is correct here.
I do remember the first time i bought a wii game that came without a manual, tried to bring it back, but apparantly tey stopped making manuals...grrr
@Rosona my copy of TotK had a Nintendo seal, I've never had a Nintendo published game without one.
Actually just happened to me within the last week. I ordered a copy of Afterimage and it came sans cart. Knowing whether it has a cart in it before you open it is easy as all you have to do is hold it up to a light and look through the end of the case. As a matter of fact I've gotten so used to scams and broken items I inspect and often video record myself opening new items just in case there's an issue. If not, delete the recording easy enough. In the case of Afterimage I took all kinds of pictures and attempted to post the review but Amazon never posted it. Either way I sent it back unopened for another copy. People suck.
My first few Switch Games were physical. Then I put 150 hours into Mario Maker 2 and my cartridge stopped working. I've been full digital ever since, with the only exception being Splatoon 3 because the box art goes SO hard
Is there an easy way to figure that out before opening the box? Someone has a trick? Thanks. Because I had it with Atari collection myself and it took a few calls to get a refund.
Happened to me once when buying a PS1 game at Babbages (remember them?). Luckily we were still in the mall (also mostly defunct) eating lunch and I opened it to my horror. They fixed it when I went back but no telling if i made it all the way home and went back a day later.
Can't say for online stores and not offering I don't use those services. Good to know about it via this article though even if doesn't apply to me.
Other then Drawn To Life Two Realms I bought in store. I refuse to buy digital code with cases games at retail. I look out for the box messages for sure I like physical and I don't want to be forced to sign up to the eshop I do because I choose to.
Same as language options I'll stick to English I'm not going to the eshop to get the Japanese language option it should be included regardless of the card size/disk size and the audio files taking up how much.
I have seen Fortnite box with skins for physical cases with a code and know immediately even besides seeing video about the topic.
Even Gear Club Unlimited 2 (glad I do own a copy with a card), sick of seeing the standard edition 'now' having no game card because oh they did do that but now it's got to have no card for re-releases to cut costs it's stupid. It's literally an old game with enough copies out there, give up at this point.
Goes to PS5 then later Switch new standard editions release with mentions of a code in the box. Microids really being disgusting there. At least the Tracks/Porsche and Definitive Editions come with a game card besides the DLC code and have no mention of no game card.
Can't say for my region for Atari 50 but if I did get the Switch version (was sure when I saw it it has no mention of it code included) glad I got it on PS4 with a disk.
I'm glad I can go for 'some' old releases. I found RE5 & 6 for PS3. No way I'm going for the modern console releases digital with physical codes. Besides I can delete the hard drive space if I want. Wish I had the 360 versions if they don't force an install and it's optional. I like PS3/360 not having installs and being optional.
In terms of manuals I mean I get games without them (prefer it there then not or a digital manual link is accessible which only a handful on PS4 have them (web browser used to go to the game/company websites for the manuals/guides, I look all the time to see the other info and which games have them), Xbox One never seen any mentioned and Switch I did for Shining Resonance Refrain that's about it for a web browser opening to find out what status effect icons meant/whatever else was in the manual) or do sometimes read them/pick up on the game pretty easily for old games sometimes not always.
This is scary. I have a lot of unopened games that I’ve had for too long to be able to return them. I’ve heard the horror stories and try to remember to shine a flashlight in there to make sure there is a cartridge, but often forget to.
Hasn't happened to me but I admit I've resealed a game (with cart included). It was a Limited Run games copy of Shantae Pirate's curse. I had bought it for $75 used. I carefully removed the cover off one game and covered Shantae with it. Used a school glue stick on the bottom to seal it because the glue would dry clear. Then resold the copy for $325. The buyer didn't complain so they didn't notice. Since then I carefully remove the wrapper on all newly purchased games for a future what-if scenario if I need to seal another rare game.
@gcunit Schrodinger's Carts
I previously answered 'No, thankfully' on this poll and posted about usually buying stuff at launch...well, fast forward to today and my launch day copy of Norn9: Last Era arrived, from Amazon UK, with the plastic seal obviously slashed open at the side and the cart removed from inside. sigh 😑 So I'm a victim of this too now. I did immediately repackage it and take it down the road to my nearest Amazon Pick Up point and have a replacement copy already on the way to me to be delivered tomorrow, it remains to be seen if this one will actually have the game cart though. Having worked in warehouse administration myself on the stock control side of things, it should be fairly easy for Amazon to pinpoint who picked and who packed my order at least (if they bother to investigate, that is), it's not as easy to get away with stealing from customer orders as some people think it is.
