It's the beginning of a new month — well, we're almost a week in at this point — and you know what that means? It's Nintendo Life's eShop Selects.
We're already comfortably into August, which means summer is drawing to a close in the northern hemisphere. Hopefully, it's cooled down a bit where you are because August's eShop line-up is looking like a scorcher.
But enough about August; we're here to look back at the very best the eShop has offered us in July. And we should tell you that July served up a feast of goods on the digital storefront. Let's not waste any time, shall we? We don't want the ice in our drinks to melt.
Honourable Mentions
The Switch is becoming the home of the rerelease and port — particularly of the retro variety. And most of our lovely honourable mentions fit into that category. Nobunaga's Ambition is a brand-new entry in a historic series getting a rare English release, and even if the Switch version isn't the best one, it's still a worthwhile way to experience a strategy gem.
- Atelier Marie Remake: The Alchemist Of Salburg | Review: 8/10
- Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes – Definitive Edition | Review: 8/10
- Nobunaga's Ambition: Awakening | Review: 7/10
- Patrick's Parabox | Review: 9/10
- PixelJunk Scrappers Deluxe | Review: 7/10
3. Gimmick! Special Edition (Switch eShop)
Sunsoft is back, and the rerelease of its Famicom platformer Gimmick! (Mr. Gimmick to Scandanavians) this July was a blast from the past. Gimmick! Special Edition is a fantastic rerelease — a simple remaster it may be, but it stands strong as one of the best-looking and best-sounding NES games of its time. And yes, while it does have a physical version in some regions, it's currently either extremely rare or is only available through Limited Run Games.
While it's punishingly difficult at times, Gimmick! Special Edition is something no retro enthusiast should be without, and BitWave games have even included art galleries, rewind, and save states to make the experience more palatable and more approachable. We gave this classic an 8/10 when we revisited it.

2. OXENFREE II: Lost Signals (Switch eShop)
Multiple delays haven't affected the quality of Night School Studios' Oxenfree II: Lost Signals, which finally launched on Switch at the start of July. This fantastic sequel takes everything that made the first game great and sharpens its focus, giving us a smaller cast of characters and better pacing than it did the first go around.
Basically, Oxenfree II is a much more polished experience — the writing is great, the voice acting is great, and everything looks and feels cleaner. You'll fall in love with the characters and want to solve the mystery even more than you did in the first game. We scored Oxenfree II a sublime 9/10 at NL Towers.
1. Venba (Switch eShop)
As much as we love a good mystery and we love walkie-talkies and old tech, you can't beat a good bit of food. Venba follows a family who has emigrated from India to Canada and must adjust to their new lives. The lead character, Venba, wants her son to grow up knowing his roots but understands the pressures of trying to fit in. And this family is followed through the years all through Venba's mother's cookbook.
It's a beautiful tale with some incredible dishes to go with it. Regardless of your heritage, there's a story at the heart of the game that everyone will resonate with, and it'll give you some food for thought, too. Venba earned an 8/10 from us, and it sits as the star meal on this delicious eShop spread for July.
< Nintendo eShop Selects - June 2023
How we decide our eShop Selects top three: As we reach the end of every month, the Nintendo Life staff vote on their favourite titles from a list of games selected by the editorial team. To qualify for this list, these games must have been released as a digital-only Nintendo Switch eShop title in that particular month, and must have been reviewed on Nintendo Life; we select the qualifying games based on their review scores.
Staff are then asked to vote for three games that they think deserve to sit right at the very top of that list; first choice gets 3 points, second choice gets 2 points, and third choice gets 1 point. These votes are then tallied to create a top-three list, with the overall winner taking that month's top prize.

Only eShop game I played was Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes so that gets my vote I guess. It was decent enough, around a 7/10 for me.
Looking forward to playing Atelier Marie Remake in the near future but seeing as I have a physical copy, I don't really count that as an eShop game anyway.
Patrick's Parabox all the way! A stand out game for the year, not just the month.
Wait, am I crazy? Didn't Disney Illusion Island come out in July? It didn't even make the list.
For some reason I can no longer add games to the collection
Nice to see Patrick's Parabox riding high in the poll - I strongly recommend it to puzzle fans.
Haven't played Oxenfree 2 yet but looking forward to it. Venba sounds interesting too tbh.
Gravity Circuit was my choice. A frankly fantastic Megaman X/Zero inspired piece. It plays things a little close to its inspiration in some ways and there’s maybe three platforming sections which I were sort of an out-of-nowhere difficulty spIke, but, with Capcom not giving us the Blue Bomber, it just feels nice to play something so well done and in theme.
Outside that, I really liked Garlic too. If Celeste met Wario in a bar and they decided to make a game with a limited color palette, there you go.
I’ve still yet to play Oxenfree 2 or Venba, but I really want to start them both asap. I was preoccupied with Final Fantasy 16 last month to start on Oxenfree, but it’s time is coming really soon.
Obviously I think everyone should go play "Super Dinoblasters" - released on the eshop in July, only $2.99! Go on get it......... Please...... I'm so hungry 😅
@Magic_Salmon_Pro Lol. Ok, you’ve got me. I’m broke right now due to some very expensive car repairs, but what’s $3? I’ll bite on it.
Might & magic definite edition is my pick, already have it on steam but I think I want to play it on portable console.
I don't understand why venba is no.1 though, who the heck want to play as "family that emigrated to another (real life) country", at least make the new country magical or at war lol.
@B_Lindz I believe Illusion Island is getting a physical release, but I can’t get a clear answer if it’s already out or not
@B_Lindz I bet they are a touch embarrassed about that review after it's tepid reception by all people. I'd try to sweep that 9/10 under the rug myself.
@somnambulance I'm really hoping you enjoy Super Dinoblasters 🤞 Otherwise I'm going to feel bad I made you spend $3! 😅
@BabyYoda71 The retail release was out in NA about a week ago.
Patrick's Parabox not being in the top 3 feels kind of criminal, in all honesty. Not to mention the complete omission of Gravity Circuit. Both are among the best indie games I've ever played so far, though I haven't finished either game yet. Patrick's Parabox scratches a similar itch to Baba is You, but it's a bit more digestible while being just as much of a joy to play. And Gravity Circuit generally just feels absolutely excellent to play, with strong presentation and incredible music. (It's also one of the highest-rated indie games of the year, up there with Pizza Tower and Dave the Diver.) I've enjoyed what I've played of Garlic so far, but I'd consider it honorable mention material
@somnambulance Recommending Gravity Circuit as well!
I haven't played any on this list, but Gimmick, Oxenfree, and Atelier Mario are on my wishlist.
I did play a few cheap cute eShop games this month (listed in no particular order):
Swords and Bones 2 - A fun little level-based hack-and-platformer. There was a bad bug which annoyed me but it has since been patched so I can now recommend the game, although I would play the first game first.
Legends of the Eternal Flame - absolutely gorgeous double-jump level-based collect-athon game. This would have easily been my top for the month, but unfortunately there are some bugs in the last few levels which reduces the experience. Very fun before that though.
Super Dinoblasters - just a cute weird simple arcade-style platformer. @Magic_Salmon_Pro convinced me to buy it (it's only $3 as he says above) and although it's not a masterpiece, it's creative and I enjoyed my time with it.
Thanks! @FishyS,
I've got lots of ideas for my next project that's alot bigger in scope and content! So I'm just hoping I can get enough sales on SDB to be able to fund it! 🤞
From this list I was only interested in Atelier Marie (which I ended up dislikng) and Might and Magic which I haven't had a chance to play yet.
@Magic_Salmon_Pro
This is the second plug I've seen that you've made so I just bought it, It's so shameless that I actually respect it xD and heck it seems to be working for you!
I don't even like 2D platformers, maybe this will change my mind. If not I'm a sucker for dinos xD
@Nintendencies I'm just that poor, I can't afford not to shamelessly plug my game at any and every opportunity 😅.
@Magic_Salmon_Pro
Pro tip, you need to invent an exotic pet and claim that for every game you sell, he (or she) gets to eat. Maybe an axototl or a goat would work well. Hey with a goat you could even do what all the cool kids do and say the game is the GOAT and by supporing it they are also feeding the GOAT (you can use that by the way I don't need any royalties, after all I've fed my silver-bellied sugar glider today)
Gravity circuit wins and it wasn’t even close, at least for me.
@Magic_Salmon_Pro
Done!
@Nintendencies well I do have a cat but perhaps she's not quite exotic enough? 🤔
@Toshiro_Baloney oh! thankyou very much, I hope you enjoy playing Super Dinoblasters!
Toree 2. To be fair I bought it a while ago but I fired it up at the weekend and loved it.
Might and Magic Clash of Heroes was the clear winner here for me and the family. Hyper, hyper addictive like the DS version was.
Patrick's Parabox got 9/10 from you guys but isn't no.1? Anyway, I like the game too, maybe a 8/10 great game for me with M&M 9/10.
Oxenfree II is on my backlog. Atlier Marie and Nobounaga's Ambition are on my wishlist.
Haven't played any of these yet, but from what I've seen and heard, including the review here on Nintendo Life, I'd say Patrick's Parabox.
@B_Lindz It's because as @BabyYoda71 mentioned Disney Illusion Island got a physical release (at least can confirm that it did here in Europe since I bought a physical copy myself).
@Magic_Salmon_Pro I remember adding your game to my Deku Deals wishlist, but forgot to get it when it came out so thanks to your plug here I've finally bought it even though I'm not sure when I'll have the time to play it!
Mr. Run and Jump is one of the best hardcore 2d platformers I’ve played this year. It’s well worth a look for platforming fans.
The game repeatedly kicks your ass from level 1 and I’m all for it
@Magic_Salmon_Pro Is it also on Steam?
@JohnnyMind thank you so much! Hopefully you will get some time soon! It's not a massive game so will only take about an hour for some one familia with NES style platformers to whiz through to the end - although each level has multiple paths and secrets that you can go find for replay value.
@B_Lindz unfortunately not, the only other version I have is an android version, but it has less content and has more of a Game Gear feel to it than NES. It's on the play store as "Super Dinoblasters GG"
@Magic_Salmon_Pro Thought so which is why I had no hesitation (along with the price, let's be honest) in grabbing it as soon as I remembered about it, but good to have confirmation!
Venba looks and sounds great but I am on a bit of a budget at the moment so that is a bit steep for two hours.
Batsugun Saturn Tribute Boosted was originally released in May, but was re-released in July to fix lag issues, if that counts as a July release it gets my vote. X-Force Under Attack is also not bad if you like upgrading and some level grinding in a shmup. I also thought Luna & Monsters Tower Defense is a pretty cool TD game for under $4 if it's still on sale. Arcade Archives released a couple good shmups in July as well. Not a bad month if you enjoy those types of games.
Oops X-Force Under Attack is actually an August release. I pre-ordered for the discount so long ago I forgot lol
