Nintendo Discontinuing 'X' Integration On Switch Next Month

I mean to be fair, Twitter is gross.

If there ever was a time for Miiverse to succeed with another chance, now would be that time.

I think I only posted pics on X or Twitter only a few times. Definitely not a huge loss for me, I always liked to send the Switch pics on my phone for the most part.

Well, that's a bummer. I actually used this feature as my main method of saving Switch screenshots to my PC.

I'm one of the few here (I guess) to actually make use of that; in fact it's the reason I made a Twitter account when Miiverse went down in the first place. Bleh. :<

I don't even use Twitter aka X.

I never used the feature (or even knew it was an option)... But why would you do this to the people who enjoyed it? Like, what's the motivation for making the change? It's not like you're disabling MySpace support or ICQ chat. Both of these platforms (Switch and Twitter) are still plenty relevant.

Imagine if Nintendo hadn’t given up on Miiverse or some other Switch centered, in house social media service. Nintendo could potentially have a social media platform with over 100 million users right now.

In fact, if a more powerful Switch is coming, it’d be silly not to give it another shot. Imagine if you could make and post Nintendo content without fear of copyright strikes, stream to other Nintendo users, and get paid for it? Nintendo with its own streaming platform and social media service would put the fear of god into Twitch, Kick, and Youtube

I know X has been a very toxic playform lately and Nintendo wants to distance itself from the controversy. But somehow I have a feeling this could also mean the Switch could start the same path the Wii U and 3DS had regarding their online functions being slowly discontinues as rumors of the “Switch 2” are getting stronger.

The headline seems correct but still makes it sound like they're closing their Twitter account.

What if there was some tech behind this that had a contractual expiration, and this is simply due to the new console not being ready yet?

Ending support in the most successful social media?! can you imagine if they announced this before the successor announcement? People would have gone nuts with the speculation.

It's kind of surprising they've held out so long, considering that Twitter's changes to API expenses caused Sony and Microsoft to drop support much earlier. Never used the feature, though. If there's anything I care enough to share beyond my Switch, I fire up SwitchBuddy

Even ignoring that, the whole "Pay $8/month to have your comments prioritized" also undermines any idea of debates being "free and open."

Just the other day, I was thinking about what a pure gaming device the Switch is, with this being one of the few exceptions I could think of. Now it's down to youtube and I think two streaming services. I wouldn't mind getting a browser and a few other services on the Switch 2, but I really hope it holds onto a bit of the Switch's beautiful simplicity.

I am for one SO shocked, surprised, aghast, that Nintendo found that allowing their users to only share content to a social media website that’s running on duct tape, two staffers, the weirdest ad funding imaginable since literally every other company left, and full of both mostly bots, outrage content, and not family friendly content, was possibly not a good idea for the brand. Splatoon 3 was the reason I created a Twitter account. I drew a few images and stopped. I now have a good reason to delete my Twitter account.

At everyone who says they used this method to save screenshots to your phone, there is a method now where you can directly download pics (and videos) from your Switch to your phone? So this is essentially cutting out the middleman in this case.

I always laugh when people say (insert name of social media) is full of bad people or whatever, these things are what you make them and reflect what you use and search for. My twitter feed is full of indie game developers and car people with the odd thing from another one or two of my hobbies, Warhammer, maybe a fitness thing etc. If it’s full of negativity it’s only yourself to blame.

It’s kind like when that US senator complained that the adverts on a site he visited had mens lingerie (or whatever it was) advertised not knowing that they were targeted ads based on his previous searches 🤣🤣

There are all types of voices and people on the platform and you can cultivate a feed that suits you very easily.

I have an X account only for gaming, entertainment and cool science stuff. I don’t even see any politics or toxicity on the platform.

Twitter has always been a cesspool, but it’s gotten significantly worse under the new ownership. (Which isn’t to say there aren’t still some good posters there.)

It’s also absolutely not uncensored. Anyone who believes otherwise is overly credulous.

Nevertheless, I’m guessing this is due to a behind-the-scenes change, rather than some statement about the state of the site. After all, their accounts there continue to be active.

I don’t speak for everyone but I’ve long deleted my Twitter account once it was announced that Musk was taking over and I have no regrets. I won’t support that laundry airing nonsense and what that wasteland has become since.
Same with Facebook and them with the trying to be discrete but failing miserably at spying on me crap.
I know most places have my data anyway by now but I try to limit what I can and take back a little control at least.
Miiverse was by gamers, for gamers, and well thought out and fun. I like that kind of environment. Bring that back please.

If Nintendo themselves didn’t claim (and hold) it, someone else would and start posting random stuff. I think Nintendo actively still uses the account too but I was thinking they can never actually back out now because wouldn’t that maybe free the account up for grabs, if even after Z amount of years?

I used this feature quite a lot to share screenshots with my brother. I'm baffled as to why they decided to remove the functionality.

The thing I'll miss is the automatic hashtags associated with the game (so I can browse other posts from fellow switch users), but I've uploaded by connecting my switch up to my laptop before, and that method offers other benefits too, like containing similar posts to a single thread, and adding edited or cropped photos.

I'll miss using it though. I know twitter is regarded as a cesspit, which is why I don't delve in to the activist side of it. I have separate accounts - one of which is used solely for video videogame related posts, and that suits me fine.

For Splatoon 3 that's good that you can now post without going through social media, but it's a shame Splatoon 2 posts seem to be going away completely.

This whole mechanic needs to be revamped. I am using the picture transfer via facebook and it is insanely unfriendly system with many steps.

So I've only seen a few people mention this in the comments and quite a lot of speculation as to WHY Nintendo would drop integration for Twitter.

Twitter hiked the price of it's API (the API is kind of like the middle man that lets the Switch etc., access Twitter's information so that it can post directly from the console without logging into a separate Twitter app) last year, which has meant companies like Sony and Microsoft have been dropping integration with Twitter because it just costs too much money to make any business sense, especially when people are using Twitter less than ever. Nintendo was the last of the big console makers to drop integration, so this isn't really unexpected after their rivals did the same thing last year.

This has been terrible for smaller and independent software developers/researchers that used Twitter's API to form part of their app/research. Musk's reasoning for this is that he believes the API is being abused by bots and scammers, and the increased price will deter them, however most companies have been put off by the price increase at a time when Twitter is losing users at a more rapid pace than the other main social media apps.

Absolute heresy to lose an integral feature of the Switch that barely anyone knew existed!

These comments pretending that Nintendo are taking a stand against Elon Musk.. Elon doesn’t want a free API model and AI models scraping all the data. I think it starts at $5000 a month now.

Honestly I’m happy about this just because I can now post drawings on splatoon without a twitter account. It really sucks that I had to have one. I’m just happy that I can now.

Seems like a trend with social media integration lately. PS4 ditched external screenshot uploads a good while ago, and my returns to the mobile Opera Omnia and SMT Liberation in the recent months had me restart both games from scratch because the latter's Facebook and somehow even the former's very Google Play identification management ties had been severed by then. I'll kinda miss the screenshot upload on Switch myself, but with other transfer methods introduced over the years, it's certainly not indispensable.

Twitter/X has improved massively since Elon Musk took over, to the point that even Jack Dorsey endorsed Musk's leadership and policies earlier this week after stepping away from Blue Sky.

Nintendo's move is understandable, but it's a very minor deal in the greater scheme of things for both companies.

Speaking of Musk, I very much hope that he buys Hookshot Media next and injects with his very refreshing policies on free speech. Hookshot Media is crying out for such a revamp.

I know people see Twitter as a rotting cesspool of negativity—and it is—but there were only two options for posting directly from the Switch to a social media platform, it just depended on which scab's platform you prefer, whether it's Melon Husk or Suckerberg. Now there's only one option, and the only way to post to any other platform is to go through the ridiculous QR code BS to send your images to your phone or connect your Switch to a PC.

If Twitter was a swamp a few years ago, it's a toxic cesspool now, in no small part because of the guy who owns it. Hate speech is rampant on the platform, with people who violated the Terms of Service under the old Twitter being allowed back on the platform under Elon Musk.

Nintendo tries to maintain a family-friendly image, and Twitter is anything but that at the moment. So naturally, they are going to divest themselves from a platform that is catering to hatemongers in order to protect their image and bottom line. I frankly don't blame them.

@ChromaticDracula Kit and Krysta addressed this in a Q and A a month or two ago. Twitter/X is their top platform in terms of audience, so they won't be going anywhere.

Also, despite pioneering the Direct format, they used Twitter to announce a Zelda movie and now a console teaser. Any broad brushstrokes that they are deprioritizing the platform seem to be unfounded.

It's still known as Twitter because that's the website you go to when you want to say ignorant things.

All because Elon decided to make companies pay an extortionate amount for the API. Surprised it lasted this long (including the bird logo remaining on the console) I use it all the time, if I have a screenshot or video I want to share. Just means I'll have to go through the slightly convoluted method of downloading it to my phone first. Hopefully you'll be able to do that on Switch 2 as well. The sooner a viable Twitter replacement steps up the better.

@dimi might have something to do with an updated API on X’s end. Nintendo either decided it wasn’t worth the time or there could’ve been a risk to consumers. Sony and Microsoft ditched all social media integration on their hardware too.

As a few have said, this probably is because of Elon's API price hike. Furthermore, let's say Nintendo saved some money by signing this API license a number of years ago; they probably assumed the Switch successor would launch by the time the contract expired. Now that the Switch 2 is delayed a year, they just figured there's no point in renewing an expensive license for the outgoing console.

And this is why I'm so upset that Elon Musk destroyed Twitter. To this day Twitter is still the best platform to explore international artists, illustrators and photographers without knowing what kind of key words to search for.

The Retweet/Repost feature still hasn't been emulated properly by competitors, and it's one of the best methods to discovering other artists similar to the ones you already follow, especially with other languages you can't read or speak.

My Twitter feed consists of beautiful art from artists across East Asia, all discovered by a seamless rabbit hole of: exploring one artist's profile page -> discovering 2 more profiles from their Retweets -> exploring a profile from a Retweet -> finding 4 more Retweets -> etc etc.

Never calling that platform "X" because Elon comes across like an entitled, arrogant loudmouth. It'll always be "Twitter" as far as I'm concerned, and it'll always be a platform best avoided. This is no loss at all for the Switch. Hopefully Twitter doesn't show up on the next Nintendo console. Games are what matters, not social media.

I agree with others here wanting a return of Miiverse, or at least something similar to it. Never used Twitter/X, never wanted to. But I think I'd get back into a new and improved Miiverse.

I like how Nintendo never updated the Twitter logo when posting screenshots.

Honestly makes me miss Miiverse. One of the best parts of the Wii U. Truly one of the only Social Medias I liked and it was generally positive and supportive.

Why you think Advertisers have been abandoning the platform in droves.... and it has nothing to do with cancel culture like Elon Musk tries to portray it, playing his usual victim card.
These companies have every right to protect their own business interest, their corporate image and values and decide where they spend their money on advertising.
Just like Nintendo now decided to abandon the X platform. It's their own right to do so.

Before Elon Musk times, Twitter was one of their main communication channels. XBox, Sony PSN, Nintendo (to a lesser extend), lot of Game studios, etc made big announcements on Twitter, used it for Customer Support updates on outages, Marketing campaigns, etc.

Now that both users are fed up with the platform and leaving it in droves and advertisers abandoning the sinking ship in droves.... there is indeed little incentive left to stay on the platform and as you said, pay those API fees.

I am DM'd and sent gore and suicide videos almost daily ever since musk took over. Reporting does nothing, it always ends with the bot saying it found nothing breaking twitters rules. I have been doxxed twice as well. Why? Because I had my pronouns in my profiles bio. I recieve ads and sponsored tweets by people actively calling for people like me to be killed. We never loved musk in the first place.

Let's all remember that free speech is a two-way street: the right to possibly offend but also to possibly be offended. It's the second part that a lot of people forget.

So it's now pricier to maintain an X connection for your gaming system. Makes sense Nintendo will choose to drop it considering it isn't an essential part of their system.

I only made a twitter account so I can share screenshots and clips from my switch to PC. I'm not really upset but I hope this gets sorted out or they add a smoother way to post things!

Nintendo likely decided the API integration wasn’t worth the price. It’s a fine line to walk before the ROI drives away users. Hopefully Twitter will see that. SM is fickle, what was popular one day is “old” the next so a service provider has to be aware of that. Looks like Facebook integration is gone as well. It sorta sucks for Nintendo that they have to go the internal route when it is obvious they wanted to step away from that when Miiverse folded. But I am curious as to how they deal with it.

I agree with this. I appreciate very much the "lack" of basic features. No Camera, no Mic(not sure about this one) etc means this is a very "safe" platform. I hope the next one followa suit.

Hey, I love Nintendo as much as the next person, but this is just another example of them refusing to spend any damm money on features for Switch users. Still no themes. Still no proper folders. Still no eShop reviews.

I just take it as Nintendo cutting things that aren't worthwhile. In this age of smartphones, though convenient to post straight from the Switch, it's just not used by most.

@Jemil1992 I think its just purely as now Twitter charges companies for features like that. As the article said Sony & Microsoft politely declined to pay a large fee for a minor feature.

@wisdomsprince For me, it's more the lack of bloat that really makes it worthwhile; no ads shoved in your face on the menu, no forced updates, no convoluted layers upon layers of settings, permissions, EULAs, or any of that nonsense. They could stand to get the eshop running more smoothly and maybe give the option to turn off the little blinking alert dots, but other than that, it does an excellent job of making sure nothing gets between me and my games.

@Anachronism Agreed. I honestly dislike the more "involved" UIs. Sorry, but the Wii U UIs was a slow mess not matter how charming it was. Just opening a game on Wii U took like 3 times more than on Switch and that was even worse at launch. Recently I went back to play a bit of Xenoblade X and... oh god I forgot how slow it was.

What I would like in the new console is not more "charm" in the UI or Netflix but more options for communications (invites, direct messages to your friends, voice chat...) and make the interface even smoother (especially the sShop). Do that and it's basically a win for me. Although having actual folders and a way to make a personalized order for the games in your menu are small little touches that do not bloat the UI and would definetly be appreciated.

@Automated_Unit_4937 honestly? yes. It is growing little by little. Even if they are doing it by using Instagram as support. Instagram is another that is bigger, Facebook too or TikTok.

Although it's not like it matters since Nintendo also said that they are planning on discontinuing Facebook support too. And they never even tried to add other social networks since launch. So they probably just want to deprioritized distract social network sharing in general.

Good. For a long time it's not Twitter anymore. It's a platform called "X" with mostly far right and fascist on it. It's time to let "X" die.

@PtM Community Notes are great, there's blue ticks who spread misinformation and nonsense on there and get paid for it, if their post is full of lies and gets noted, it gets demonetised and the post has to wear that note around its neck no matter how often it gets shared.
