Last year, Microids and PlayMagic announced they would be releasing a remake of the cel-shaded first-person shooter XIII for Nintendo Switch and multiple other platforms. It was scheduled to arrive before the end of 2019 and was then delayed.
It's now been confirmed the game will be launching on 10th November. There's no mention of price just yet. Alongside this announcement comes a first look at the gameplay. Here's a bit more about the trailer above, courtesy of the press release:
The gameplay trailer unveils the artistic direction chosen, especially the cel-shading treatment, trademark of the original game! Discover the new look of two iconic environments of the game: Brighton beach or the FBI headquarters ; and get a glimpse of some of the weapons and useful items needed to progress through the game, hinting of the different play styles. Will you play sneakily or choose the frontal confrontation?
The game includes a solo campaign and also the option to "challenge your friends" in multiplayer matches. On top of this, the team has been able to remaster the original game soundtrack and actors' voices.
There'll also be a limited edition released on 10th November - including a copy of the game, a two-sided metal case, three art cards, and 13 in-game weapon skins. And if you pre-order any version of the game, you'll get the Golden Classic Weapons Skins Pack (containing a pistol and golden knife).

I actually had XIII on GCN way back in the day. It wasn't bad, but it was a game you mostly played for the style, it was fairly unremarkable outside of that IIRC. Kinda hope this one's better, because the style is really cool.
Never heard of it but it looks interesting.
@kkslider5552000 I recall the multiplayer being a bit of fun. But yeah, the game looked great, but didn't blow me away back then either. Hope this is better!
I love the first one from Ubisfot, i play a lot on PC.
XIII is a european graphic novel, also adapted to the TV series format. The comic is very popular in Europe. But in America people know more about the game.
If you want the CE that looks to be only EU option.
Finally some news about this. I thought this was going the way of vaporware. Can't wait to get it, it's a great game.
Wow I wasn't expecting such a visual overhaul!
I also had this on Gamecube all those years ago, it looks quite rough now played on a modern TV. So with the visuals being greatly remastered for this version I can see me buying this again...
It's looking good that's for sure..
Loved it on GC and PS2.
Sort of reminded me of N64 golden eye
Yes can't wait, still got this on GameCube but since my disc is all scratch up now, getting this for Switch is the perfect solution.
David Duchovny’s finest performance e
The whole memory thing is giving me Jason Bourne vibes, the visuals look pretty good to me.
I've seen it a looooooooooooooong time when I was a teenager I believe. I might have even played it lol but can't really remember clearly/
Initial release date: November 18, 2003 so yea... it's been a while ;p
How come there is zero oomph to the weapons and kills... hope it's a quirk of the trailer itself. Seems like it would be a waste to return all the graphics to full glory and have some lackluster combat. Part of the issue could just be that FPS games weren't striving to be as grandiose, with mowing down hordes of baddies to gritty EDM and all of that.
This looks bland and over produced now. I loved this game on Xbox because of the striking visual style. This looks less like a comic book and strays from the original beauty. Fingers crossed the gameplay still holds up.
@johnvboy Obviously don't want to ruin the story but there's more to the mystery.
Ahhhhhh can't wait
It’s really cool to see gameplay of this. It looks like a huge upgrade from the original which I had way back when. I always thought the plot was very similar to the Jason Bourne series.
Anyway, really looking forward to this! Especially since it drops in November: I got the original for Christmas that year so being able to play this over the holiday season will certainly play into the nostalgia factor.
@johnvboy You are not wrong! The XIII game is based on a belgian graphic novel, which in turn is loosely based on the Bourne Identity book by Robert Ludlum.
I remember really wanting to play this game way back in the day but never got around to it. Looks pretty good. I've always been a fan of cel-shaders, particularly back then when games that went for a realistic look never really looked very realistic. I always thought cel-shaders were great because they could look like proper animations and were kinda timeless in that sense.
Although, with current gen graphics the appeal is less than it used to be (realistic graphics is getting pretty decent to say the least!). Haha, I don't own a powerful pc or gaming console capable of that stuff these days and I pretty much avoid looking at vids of current gen for the most part. So this looks pretty good to me, might have to pick it up.
I loved this game on the GCN, can’t wait to give it a try again
Looks superb. I remember the shooting felt a bit lightweight all those years ago but this now looks fantastic. Another essential purchase xxx
@JoakimZ,
Thanks for the information, I was thinking it was just pure coincidence.
Yes I played this a ton back in the days.
Must buy for me
@Richnj,
Thanks, I have never played the game before but do remember it, nice to know there is a good story to it.
This remake seems to make to effort of getting the game closer to the source material. Itstead it seems intent on LESS visual resemblance and MORE nonsense action.
I love the comics, so this direction is sort of a red flag for me, but I'll stil await a review. :3
Funnily enough I recently re-read the original comics. Fantastic series. I loved the original on Gamecube, the comic book style was excellent with the sound effect graphics and the little panels that popped up when you offed someone. Multiplayer was fun too, felt more down to earth than a lot of other titles at the time.
The new trailer makes it seem as though the new graphics look less comic book-like in some sections which is odd.
Also, what's the deal with golden guns? They had them in Max Payne 3 as well and I just think they look stupid in-game.
It wasn't the most mind-blowing FPS even for the time but I enjoyed it back in the day when I played it on the Xbox and I'm keen for this remake.
@Dringo
If you want an actor that sounds bored in anything, hire him. Californication was a great role for him though.
Looks great, never played the original.
No thanks. The original sucked balls, in my humble opinion.
Still have the original on gamecube. I did finish the game and played a good amount of multiplayer. It was pretty fun. The comic panel style was pretty fun too.
I actually loved this hame back in the day. The gameplay didn’t blow me away like timesplitters but the story with all its mystery, the fantastic soundtrack, and the really cool art style really dug me in. I played thru this game 3 times back in the day and really want to see them wrap this up as the ending really leaves you hanging. Great update to the visuals, I’m impressed. I wish they gave a soundtrack out with the preorder. I’m definitely getting this.
Recently replayed this on my GameCube at the beginning of the year, had some good bits and mostly holds up pretty well. A solid 6/10 from me (I'm a harsh scorer, nothing gets 10 and even 9s are very rare these days) enjoyable classic gameplay with a bit of mystery and conspiracy that is reasonably well told and portrayed.
Is it a remake of the original game or a new XIII game? It looks like a totally new game based on the source material rather than a remake, but calling it a remake might bring in fans of the original?
I liked that trailer. Please do a Review on this one! 🙏
Glad to finally see SOME update about it. I played the original on Gamecube so much that whenever I see the title (even on the comics), some in-game music and dialogue lines start ringing in my head, even today still ("aim for the head!", in the multiplayer set-up screen, and the sounds of those comic book images when you kill someone with a throwing knife through the head).
I'm looking forward to this one, albeit very... reluctant. I just noticed it's made (or published?) by the same people that did Blacksad, another game based on another one of my favourite comic series (one that I prefer over this one). I recently, after seeing it has had some patches since its abysmal release, and being able to get the limited physical edition for dirt cheap new, gave it a chance, because I really wanted to really love a game based on Blacksad, and it's still completely broken. Terrible load times, countless crashes and glitches, and even after WANTING to play through the great story despite constantly being pulled out of it by crashes, glitching dialogue lines, bugs, and terribly long load screens... It auto-saved right after triggering a long and unskippable cut scene (with load times AND glitches in it -Blacksad takes off a hat and puts it down, while the hat just duplicates when he grabs it and one remains on his head, you simply can't take this serious), after which another load time occurs, and the game crashes every time. So it's completely broken. I'll have to wait and see about this one, especially since I really WANT to play it.
But is it 4 player local split screen multiplayer? That's all i want!
So much for original art concepts

this game was awesome back in the day...i wonder if they kept the kkk costumes, always fun killing those guys
No online multiplayer?
Lame
Id really want, beside the classic campaign, a good online shooter that isnt call of duty-like, but more in the classic style.
Will it have an end or will it basically set up XIII Part 2 still? Fingers crossed they are doing a sequel as without that I will not be buying a remake of a game with a cliffhanger.
Really enjoyed XIII back on the GameCube, I liked the "tap tap tap" and the art style. Don't play a lot of FPS games but think I'll get this one.
What happened? The original game really nailed the comic book art style but this remake looks like they didn't even try. It doesn't look BAD, it just doesn't have much that sets it apart visually from other modern shooters, unlike the original.
yes, YES, I forgot what I played this on but I L-O-V-E-D it, I will definitely buy it again on twitchy Switch
Looks like a cellphone game.
Loved this on the OG Xbox back in the day. I just watched the mini series with Dorff and Kilmer too. "Mr Rowland? It's been such a long time"
