After multiple delays, Square Enix has finally locked in a release date for Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition - at least in Japan. The game will arrive on multiple platforms, including Nintendo Switch, on 27th August. There'll be a physical and digital copy made available for 4,800 yen.
Below is the full announcement:
Unfortunately, there's no word on a local release date for this title just yet. The last we heard it was coming out in "Summer 2020" and earlier this year it was rated by the Australian Classification Board. It suggests the game is ready for a western release - so keep an eye out for any updates.

Really excited for this.
Nintedo Switch huh
Can you still play it in single player?
How do I connect my GBA
With all the Final Fantasy remakes I had been playing lately, kinda forgot that this one was coming out this year.
This game was all about multi-player right? Hard pass.
It's difficult enough getting a friend to play for an hour or two in one sitting. Talking a friend into playing through an entire Final Fantasy sized adventure? Never happen.
@NintendoByNature yes you can but it can be a frustrating process
I'm pretty excited for this. Played through the entire thing back in the day with my brother and a good friend.
I didn't really get into the GameCube game, but I guess I could give this another try.
@Heavyarms55 multi-player made the game easier but you could play single player. Crystal Chronicles doesn't feel like a Final Fantasy game to me it feels like another series altogether.
Loved playing this with my brother when it came out and it work really well with the gba connected as a controller. Hopefully the multiplayer has built in voice chat though rather than through the mobile app that's if it has any at all. Playing it alone kind of takes away from how it should be played though. I will say the opening song for this is also amazing and was blown away by how good it was at the time and fit the game so well. Kind of want the the Wii game Crystal Bearers to get a port though as it is arguable a much better single player game and looks good too was just vastly over looked in the west and got average reviews for not being anything like either the original or any other Final Fantasy games.
@GrandScribe it is in many ways like how both the Mana and Saga games were named on the Game Boy to have Final Fantasy in the name when released in the west to have more brand recognition. It was like Sqare saying were are putting a Final Fantasy game on the Gamecube because the name says so.
Day one when it arrives here.
I really hope the release date is announced soon for Europe. This was one of my favorite GameCube games.
Remastered...remastered...remastered...remastered...remastered...
Switch is more an emulator than a new gen console.
How many expensive remastered games can we stand?
Switch has been my worst console ever.
@GrandScribe To me as A FF game it was a letdown. After many years on PS1.. I always ended up with the Classics of FF games. And we all know those discs were ugly silver. So this time I wanted with the new FF one of the first so I wouldn't get the cover with classic on it and a blanc disc. I got the collector edition. Boy the game was such a huge down. I played and I was like where is the FF style of it? It was like a N64 game Quest 64. And that was annoying to play in a circle all the time. To me it was the next Quest 64 on gamecube but named FF to make more sales. I wonder if this game didn't have Final Fantasy name... would you guys all still would be in for it? Or would you drop it just like Quest 64 and other underwhelming rps on N64.. I wonder
@Scirocco7 But most people didn't had the chance to play some older games. I sold my WII and WII U very early. I still have some copies of gamecube games, but to be running on older hardware... no thanks. I care only for the game. So if it's emulated correct and gives a better experience by giving better graphics and widescreen. Then hell yes Remaster is welcome. Most games today are lacking amazing OST. Look @ breath of the wild. most of the time that game is on mute. Hearing bird chirping doesn't capture anything. Well it's an opinion at the end. Happy gaming to you
I miss the music from this game so much.
Didn't expect physical but I am guesing they still haven't implemented couch co-op, so I am not sure if I will get it.
@Scirocco7 Then stop playing remastered games and start playing new games like Doom 2016, Wolfenstein II, Astral Chains, Mortal Kombat 11 Aftermath, BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle, Samurai Shodown 2019, Dragon Quest XI S, Streets of Rage 4, Mega Man 11, Yooka-Lawlee, Octopath Traveler, Dragon Ball FighterZ, Monster Hunter Generation Ultimate, Bloodstained, Daemon x Machina, God Eater 3, Luigi's Mansion 3, Pokemon Sword and Shield, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Fire Emblem: The Three Houses, Darksiders Genesis, Fortnite, Overwatch, Super Mario Odyssey, The Messenger, Ori and the Blind Forest, Cuphead, Untitled Goose Game, Forgotten Anne, Blossom Tale, Freedom Planet, Sonic Mania Plus, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, etc.
This was my fav gamecube title. Love the series and soundtracks so much I bought all the cds. I need a little more information on the remastered title though before purchasing. There seems to be so many remasters these days and sometimes I feel a little disappointed when its just enhanced graphics with no extras.
However for all you who perhaps weren't around the first time I absolutely recommend the first rate title. It's not Final Fantasy it's Chronicles. It's a great series!
I hope this is successful enough for Square-Enix to remaster the ds and wii titles. They would be day one purchases for me. A chance to play on the tv would be reason enough.
Really looking forward to this. This a game that always felt like it needed online multiplayer. I wonder what percentage of people ever played the original with a party of 4. I would guess 0.001% and that's probably being generous
I was so disappointed with this game on GC, hard pass for me...
@retro_player_77
New games??? From2016 and 2017???
mario bros??? remastered.
Monser hunter???
The most of the games u have written are old and remastered!!!
I prefer SEKIRO, NIOH 2, MONSTER HUNTER WORLD FROST, CALL OF DUTY MODERN WARFARE, ASSASSINS CREED ODYSSEY, BORDERLANDS 3, RESIDENT EVIL 2 AND 3, PERSONA 5 ROYAL,
DOOM ETERNAL, DEATH STRANDING, RED DEAD REDEMPTION, FIFA 20 ( the real fifa 20 not the switch crap ), SPIDERMAN, CONTROL.
@Scirocco7 Play those games then 👍
@Scirocco7
I’m guessing you haven’t been a Nintendo fan that long. The last 3 gens have been the same story. Strong first party support and weaker on the 3rd party side, with the tech being essentially a gen behind Sony and Microsoft. Of course one of the draws now is it’s both a mobile and a home console, but naturally, again, compromises have to be made. Sorry if it didn’t end up what you’re expecting, but you’re not going to end up with many sympathizers here.
I love the Switch and keep giving me the remasters, because it’s currently my only console, and it gives me a chance to play some of the classics.
That being said, I never cared for Crystal Chronicles on the GameCube the first time around, so it’ll be a pass for me.
Please let this have good online functions, that will instantly turn this game into a masterpiece.
Now this is some article worthy news, NL.
@Kinpatsu Upvoting that comment simply for how calm and tolerant you are. I always appreciate those kinds of comments amidst others that are getting a little more worked up haha
I have the game for GameCube and it seems pretty decent, but because of my still growing backlog, it is far below on my list.
Anyone knows if this comes english support?
They still haven't confirmed if someone has to carry that ***** miasma crystal, that was simply the worst feeling part of the game.
@Gahdrii that stinks. I rarely have people to play with.
hate to sound mean but this thing was announced way too long ago, and the lack of updates made me lose interest
I'm less worried about local release date, more about local multiplayer. Last we heard this was looking like online multi only, or possibly local wi-fi with each player using their own Switch and copy of the game.
I loved this game on GC but it will be a hard pass if I have to get 4 copies of the game just so I can sit with my family and play it. Getting 4 friends together each with their own GBAs was hard enough...
August 27, 2020 in Europe.
@SirKero Soooo many people pleaded for couch co op on Square's Twitter, never a reaponse as far as I saw. I want it too. I don't care about the "secret" personal missions, I just want to play this with my kids.
@Averagewriter the game was absolutely awesome in multiplayer but an absolute bore when played solo. Like... pretty much terrible...
Wait.. is the trailer showing cross-play? If it is then I’ll be able to play this! .. cause I don’t have friends T_T
