Following in the footsteps of other major gaming events like E3 2020 and GDC, gamescom 2020 has now been officially cancelled.
In a statement issued online, event organisers say that the event will "under no circumstances take place on site" this year as the ongoing coronavirus pandemic remains a serious threat. Instead, a digital gamescom is currently in the works which hopes to celebrate the biggest games of the year in a new way. Here's the full statement:
More details on this new digital event are expected in the coming weeks. We'll make sure to keep an eye out for more news as and when it arrives.
Are you sad to see the physical gamescom event go? Would you usually attend, or are you more than happy to watch from home? Share your thoughts below.

This pandemic will open people's eyes, and make us question whether or not we really need physical conventions when Nintendo is giving us pre-recorded Directs.
Well that or we will always remember how much 2020 sucked! Not since Y2K have i seen such widespread panic and stupidity and the media right there as always to scare the living daylights out of everyone! Dogs and cats living together, mass histeria!
It really sucks that the start of the new '20s involves cancelling a whole ton of events in order to stop the spread of a pandemic. At least 2021 can be a resurgence of all the stuff that didn't happen this year.
@theJGG For customers like you and me then you are correct, we don't really need them. Gamescom though is an event more focused on the consumer so it would be a shame for that to go. When it comes to something like E3 however one thing people often overlook is how important those conferences are to Indie and smaller developers who are looking to get their games published. E3 is a chance for small companies to talk with Nintendo and the like to strike deals that otherwise simply would not be available to them. There are also loads of jobs secured at these events for people like designers etc who use the conference as an opportunity to show what they can do and look for work. After all Nintendo have their Directs but still choose to physically attend. Who knows how many great games and talented people the industry will miss out on if conferences disappear altogether.
Bad luck this all happens in the year when new consoles are being launched. Those events are always magical.
'We must stand united '* (*United minimum 2 metres apart).
@theJGG I have no idea how Directs are supposed to replace Gamescom.
There aren't even a lot of game announcements during Gamescom...
It's about being there, trying out future games and having a great day.
I honestly never paid much attention to GamesCom, mainly because there are barely any announcements. So this doesn't faze me much, similarly to what happened with E3.
@theJGG
Ya, and we won't need sports, or concerts, or airplanes, or movie theaters, or beaches...or anything with groups of people getting together!!
It's sooooo scary out there!!! 🙄
This is good for the environment. They should do these over the internet with digital demos
Sorry but this is becoming more annoying by the day. I get corona is dangerous ,but come on it 4 months away. What next going to cancel the video game awards in may when it not happening until December
@theJGG I don't think it's ever a bad thing to hold events where people can actually physically get their hands on games before they're released. I guess it's also great for connecting with like minded people. Sure we can do that online easier than ever these days but we should never prioritise that over real world experiences and opportunities. Well, besides when there is a global pandemic.
Well, with everything being cancelled and everyone losing their jobs, this year by far, sucked. Let's hope that 2021 comes packed full with announcements and events that was undoubtedly missed this year.
@DinnerAndWine I'm sorry if I came off that way. Sports events, concerts, should always allow fans. I suppose gamescom can allow their authentic gaming experience to happen online, maybe game devs can put demos of their games onto their respective storefronts.
