Update 3: Now includes Shadow of Doom DLC Fantastic Four characters - Mr Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch and The Thing.
Update 2: Now includes Rise of the Phoenix DLC X-Men characters - Cable, Iceman, Gambit and Phoenix.
Update: Now includes unlockable and DLC Curse of the Vampire Expansion Pack characters - Thanos, Loki, Cyclops, Colossus, Blade, Punisher, Moon Knight and Morbius.
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order features a large cast of super heroes and villains that even non-fans of comics have come to know (if not love) over the years. These larger-than-life figures have starred in dozens of Hollywood blockbusters over the past two decades or more, reaching a climax last year with the cinematic crossover extravaganza Avengers: Endgame, which we're sure you probably caught wind of.
We've collected promo art and images of every playable character in MUA3 for your enjoyment. An update soon after launch unlocked Cyclops and Colossus and a host of bosses, too. More playable heroes are available in the three DLC packs, the first of which contained Moon Knight, Blade, Punisher and Morbius. The second pack featured four X-Men and released at the end of last year, and the final pack dropped in March 2020 with the Fantastic Four.
As a bonus we've also included a comparison picture of each character's most recent/famous live-action incarnation. We'll let you decide for yourselves if Team Ninja has taken inspiration from the live-action versions or stuck squarely to the source material, but some of the results are interesting, especially considering the criticism Square Enix's Avengers game has come in for over its depictions of Marvel's finest.
Without further ado, we kick things off with the King of Wakanda. Excelsior!

I'm not going to drag every character down with this complaint, but for the most part, I enjoy the character design from the games far more.
With the X-Men in particular, I've never been a fan of the all-black leather costumes from the films. Give me that bright blue spandex with as many yellow pocket belts as you can strap on to that stern boy.
I actually am a big fan of these designs, they’re really quite comics accurate and the colour really pops. The original games tried the ‘realistic’ look and they’ve aged horribly so I do prefer the cel-shaded cartoon look.
I remember being able too throw Wolverine at people with Colossus in either Legends or the first Ultimate Alliance. I hope that type of stuff is still in this one.
Ugh, no Daredevil? No one likes Miss Marvel.
@AugustusOxy Ms Marvel is awesome and Daredevil is included
I'm wondering why Elsa Bloodstone isn't in this list, she is definitely one of the playable characters
@AugustusOxy Daredevil is there on the first page with his Netflix counterpart.
And what are you talking about? I friggin love Kamala
@MisterWhen She is! I’ll edit her on ASAP
@graysoncharles Ah, but it’s not live-action
Probably should've done a comic comparison instead of movie.
More accurate to the comics, so were the previous games and Marvel vs. Capcom. No problem here
Be interesting if they try get Ant-Man in, his size changes will be quite tricky to implement.
Great designs. Seeing Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler reminds me I haven't watched X2 in probably over a decade and how I wish he did more than one movie. He was a highlight of that movie
Ant-Man not getting any love?
There are some influences from the movies but it is more comic accurate designs which is cool
I want it. IwantitIwantitIwantit....
Many of these characters look thicc compared to their MCU counterparts. Looking at you, Cap and Black Panther.
Gee, what a shock - only 3 out of 33 playable characters haven't been in a movie or TV show. Almost like they only made this third entry just for advertisement. Think I'll be passing on this unless it gets a big price cut, and just replay the first game in the meantime.
Why show past timeline nightcrawler, psylocke and magneto for comparison but than show present/future timeline storm? Storm has appeared in 2 of the past timeline movies.
Also magneto’s voice in this game is based on sir ian mckellen, so showing his version from the movies would have been more logical.
No ant-man?!? Wow I might not get this
@Ayye-ant He's one of the non-playable characters
@dartmonkey is that 100% confirmed? I assume we will see playable and unlockable characters added closer to release and even some surprises? I figured ant man would be playable...
Still hoping for Punisher
Perpetually sad Gambit has been so left out of the comic-to-movie craze in the last decade. I think he was in one of the X-Men movies? Was holding out hope he'd sneak in here just like he was in some of the previous Marvel video games.
Woof, I'm reminded that the Fox X-Men costumes (outside of Deadpool of course) are REAL dated compared to right now, when almost ever comic book movie has the characters actually look like their comic book counterparts
@Stocksy So far Ant-Man is non-playable along with Nick Fury and a bunch of others, but we’ll update this list with DLC characters and any playable surprises that crop up.
Really cool roster. Really glad that Venom, Daredevil and Nightcrawler are in. This game's gonna be a blast to play.
All of 20th Century Fox should be "Disney" right now. They might also be coming to the MCU in the coming years.
I like the cast of characters here. I do wish Juggernaut was playable though, but it’s all good.
Looking great. I hope the DLC characters aren't just the NPCs, because that's really money-grabbing, but this is Koei Tecmo of course.
@shoeses That’s an awfully cynical way to look at it. MUA1 had only two characters (Moon Knight and Spider-Woman) that weren’t eventually featured in movies, and the rosters are pretty similar. They’re just picking the popular characters because that’s what most people want to see.
Great article guy's! Fun to see these comparisons
This has me excited for the DLC. For now though Storm and I shall bring Thanos to his knees.
I am glad Nightcrawler is In, he has always been my favorite X-men!🙌🏼 Excited to Hulk smash enemies into oblivion!💪🏼
@Desrever - Oh man the things I would do to have Cyclops in that classic 90s get-up in this game.
Surprised to see Nightcrawler make it in.
I wonder if it will be the Robbie Reyes ghost rider from agents of shield featured and also if the wasp will be Janet or hope/Nadia
@darkswabber unless the articles been changed, the nightcrawler pic is from X men 2 rather than the newer ones
@dartmonkey elektra*
I’m sick of everybody trying to make comparisons between the MCU and the actual comic books. The books have been around far longer and that’s what this is based off of. Comic book fans don’t even care about the MCU. we usually complain about how inconsistent and incorrect it is. I’m OK with squares game. they stated that its own story. I’m OK with this game considering it’s based off of the comics and still has its own story I might add.
I’m a huge fan of the designs in this game.
Team Ninja did a superb job designing these characters. A1
The character designs look great! But I think it is less that they look like the MCU designs and more that the MCU designs are pretty faithful to the source material in most cases.
I've wanted a good superhero game for a long time. But I felt like they rarely make the kind I want. We've had fighting games and MMOs and detective games etc. But I want an action game where you feel like a super hero, not something else. This game looks like almost exactly what I had in mind!
@Ryu_Niiyama You will do what, now?
I might actually pick this up. I played the second Ultimate Alliance on Wii, and I don't know why, but it never clicked with me. Maybe because it felt too much like button mashing at the time, but I stopped playing before I ever finished the first or second mission, but this one looks like a lot more fun.
I hope we get the original Captain Mar-vell as a DLC. That was such a special character. Its him and Warlock facing off against Thanos back in the day.
Otherwise, the models are cartoony and comic like, sort of like the xmen animated series which I loved!
I'm not sure if this game would be for me if I was going to purchase it, but including Miles Morales, Spider Gwen and Ms Marvel makes it easy to decline. They are just such out and out creations of far-left identity politics that they would grate on my nerves.
This is way closer to the comics than the movies were so kudos.
Good roster, but why do recent games that have the X-Men leave Cyclops out of the roster?
Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 did the same thing and it annoyed me there as welk.
Its not like he's some b-tier character in the X-Men franchise. He was one of the orginal X-Men, has been their field leader for most versions of the team. and played a major role in most of the major storylines.
Why does he keep getting shafted?
Why does Crystal look like Dr. Beverly Crusher (Star Trek: TNG)?
@dartmonkey for now till they add more down the road.
@BaronLaw Well Marvel Comics have never been just escapist fantasy as a lot of people try to think, they always drew parallelism to real life as a means to convey a significant message, Lee, Kirby, Ditko and co. pushed REAL hard for that and it's made evident in the earlier days of Marvel
I think it would of been better to added the comic versions (the source material) for comparison too
I need Iceman & Emma Frost. I think Iceman, Cyclops, Rogue, and a few other (probably from the 90s animated show) are going to be in the X-Men DLC.
@Malcrash Yes but the first X-Men movie released twenty years ago when comic book movies were a HUGE financial risk as a result of the disastrous Batman films of the late 90's. The point was to make them look less like they came from comics and more realistic in order to be taken seriously, of course it proved to be succesful and helped pave the way to modern superhero films. The MCU films were able to be more faithful to the source material because there wasn't any risk anymore
Marvel Knights DLC certainly has the potential to bring us Moon Knight and Punisher, if not possibly Blade. If I can get MK and Blade, I'll be happy.
This game is one of those titles that teeter on the edge of "I want this" and "I don't know if it's worth full price" for me.
I'd generally just wait for a price drop, but I said the same thing about FE warriors and the game has clung resolutely to it's price tag since launch.
@gimmi_c Thancs
@shoeses you sound so cheat and a bad troll as well.
I’m pretty happy with this and their look. Plus we get three dlc packs it seems from X-men, fantastic 4, and I think avengers? So if let’s say each pack features 4 like F4 being the give away who would you guys pick?
Pack 1:Thing, human torch, invisible woman, mr. fantastic
Pack 2: cyclops, colossus, iceman, gambit (thought beast was playable)
Pack 3: ant-man ( if they could get the mechanics down), vision, she hulk, Quicksilver.
I haven’t followed this game too close so I’d rather have no npc dlc so antman and vision maybe would need the axe, beast could be avenger dlc if so. Also I was trying to balance things a bit with make/female characters but couldn’t think of many.
No Squirrel Girl in MUA3. 0/10
@TYRANACLES Marvel Knights is the first pack, then X-Men and Fantastic 4
@Darthroseman so it is. Moonknight and punisher maybe? Moonknight was always one I played as in the older games.
So glad to see Venom and Wolverine in the game, those are two of my favorite Marvel characters. Glad to see so many Spooders in the game as well, there's enough to make a full Spider-Man team!
@ThanosReXXX Oh, yeah forgot about you. Well you try destroying the Galaxy and Storm will beat you up too!
@Ryu_Niiyama >SNAP!<
@ThanosReXXX Nah-Nah You missed me! My boss just disappeared though...
@Ryu_Niiyama Nah, I didn't miss. I skipped you on purpose...
@Stocksy Marvel Knights DLC will likely include him.
@jm816 Yes, key word you said being 'eventually'. They were eventually in movies & TV shows. And yes, the rosters are a bit similar. One might say TOO similar to a game from 2006 to a game in 2019.
@frogopus Again, like I said with the other guy, they were eventually in movies being a key factor.
@shoeses They were eventually in movies because they were already popular in the comics. Most of these characters have been popular for decades, and they’re what people generally want to see. And we’ve also got some newer headliners to keep up with the times. Bottom line—you can’t please everybody all the time, but there is something for ALMOST everyone with a large roster of popular characters. If that doesn’t appeal to you, maybe you’re not the target audience.
@Kriven If it helps, Cloak and Dagger are almost guaranteed to be part of Marvel Knights, considering that those two, Shang-Chi, and Moon Knight are the major characters missing associated with that imprint.
@AugustusOxy no worries, he's in the game. Though yes, looooads of folk like Ms Marvel.
@AugustusOxy I hope you're talking about Captain Marvel
because Ms. Marvel is one of the best!
@eltomo Ms. Marvel has a single size-change move it's her Alliance Extreme Attack (She Embiggens herself and stomps on all her enemies).
@rallydefault Gambit (from my memory) was only in that movie
X-men Origins:Wolverine
I won't spoil his role in the movie in case you haven't seen it.
@shonenjump86 I don't understand why he isn't playable seeing as how he was in the previous game(s)
@Heavyarms55 Not gonna lie (I'm a Comic book dude, not MCU)
every time I play this game with my little brother (Comics were more popular during my time than his) he makes comparisons to the MCU. I have to keep reminding him that certain characters are way more powerful in their comic variants. This is the only game where I actually felt like a hero (there were even a couple of times where I referred to myself as that hero). Like I said not gonna lie I really felt like playing the Avengers Theme while playing the game and saying "Avengers Assemble!". Heh, I'm such a nerd!
@Cyberbotv2 which series
the OG one with Gambit?
or
the Nicktoons one (Wolverine and the X-men)?
@Caryslan I have no idea man
even my boi Colossus
maybe they just want the "more popular" original X-men like Wolverine and Storm.
@Kriven I feel that Rocket being his own character would have 3 problems:
1. Too small (the smallest playable character/it would be hard to see him in a Warriors game where you must fight multiple enemies)
2. His Moveset (Rocket doesn't really have a defined moveset/and if he did it would be too similar to Star-Lord's)
3. # of ranged Characters (there aren't that many ranged characters in the game and having one of those be Rocket kinda complicates your Team Customization early on/not to mention they compiled those 2 guys as one to accommodate the 4-player magic as the targeted mechanic with of course the Guardians of the Galaxy)
@TYRANACLES didn't they already confirm the list of people included in the Marvel Knights DLC?
Blade,
Punisher,
Moon Knight,
Morbius
@Giygas_95 Comic cap is jacked!
@Reigestugatensho I've got this game sitting on my desk with several other games waiting to be played. It'll happen, eventually.
@Reigestugatensho yeah, he was a favorite of mine in Alliance 2.
@shonenjump86 Definitely more fun than Hulk!
@Reigestugatensho : Sorry for late reply, but I was referring to the early 90s xmen animated series. I just enjoy that animation so much.
A better comparison would've been if you'd have taken shots of the movie characters who have masks or helmets with their masks or helmets on.
War Machine...where is my War Machine?!
🥰THANK GOODNESS the Blade in this Game is based of Wesley Snipes' version and NOT Sticky Fingaz' version.
❗Also, Psylocke is H😍T!
