Nintendo Switch Lite FAQ
How does Switch Lite compare to other Switch consoles?
The main difference setting the Switch Lite apart from the standard and OLED Model Switch consoles is the fact that the Lite is a handheld-only console. This means that the Switch Lite cannot be played on the TV, but instead serves as a more traditional handheld console like a Game Boy or Nintendo DS.
This means that the Lite doesn't come with separate Joy-Con controllers that detach from the console, as you may have seen with the bigger Switch models; instead, the console body itself is all you need to play.
The best part? It's significantly cheaper than the Switch and Switch OLED Model consoles.
For a full rundown of all three systems and a detailed comparison of each, check out our full guide:
Are all Switch games compatible with Switch Lite?
Nearly all Nintendo Switch games are compatible with Switch Lite without any complications, but a small handful might require you to pick up a separate compatible wireless controller.
The Switch Lite can play any Switch game that supports handheld mode. For games that do not support handheld mode (such as Super Mario Party, 1-2-Switch, and Nintendo Labo), players can wirelessly connect compatible controllers to the Switch Lite and effectively create a makeshift tabletop setup.
The guide linked below explains everything you need to know
What comes in the box with Switch Lite?
The Nintendo Switch Lite does not include a dock, HDMI cable, or kickstand like the original model. Instead, the box will simply contain the console and an AC adaptor.

Why is it £200? It’s $200 in America and that is equal to £160
$199.99 = £199.99 now!?
Guess Nintendo is planning for a hard Brexit.
Or they have plans to kidnap the British Queen. Then Bison dollars will be worth so much more.
None of these pre-orders are live in the US...
@Hissscratch139 US prices are without tax. EU / UK prices include tax.
@Hissscratch139 It's always been like this since I can remember way back in the 1980's. Nothing new with £1 = $1USD for retail stuff.
I’d like to get the turqoise one.
But in The Netherlands, they sell it for €€229 to €249 which is not a great deal... In USA it’s litteraly like €170! That’s 20-25% cheaper there...
I'll pick up the switch lite grey when it launches. All my gaming systems are black or grey.
'There’s an actual D-pad on the left, but the rest of the design is largely unchanged'. Clearly a quick first draft of the Amazon description.
Blurb appears to be nabbed from a stuff.tv article on the subject. I've no idea why anyone could possibly be interested in this observation but I've typed it now.
@mr12calvin @Rafke what’s even worse is the pokemon switch lite is ever more expensive in the netherlands even though in other countries it’s the same price as the normal lite models.
It’s supposed to be a cheap and accesible alt to the normal switch but making it €250 here is as backwards as it could get. Even with tax it should be between €200 and €220 max.
Also don’t get me started on lego prices in the netherlands.
Completely inferior to my switch from release, no thanks
Weakening pound means increasing prices.
Anyway, I won't be buying until I am certain that the thumb sticks are easily replaceable or are proven to not be susceptible to drift. Also expect there to be special editions and perhaps revisions to the original model.
It’s $259 Cdn....makes me almost not want to get it and get the regular Switch instead
230 euros what the fook.
€229/€249 in my country, no thx the regular switch is €299 in my country.
If it was €199 I would get it, kind of unfair that the US pays less than we do (I know $199 excludes taxes, but even with them it would be roughly €199 in EU)
I wait when it drops to €199, Lite can do less than the regular Switch and it's not worth the EU price (it is worth it looking at the US prices)
Edit: it looks like some shops slightly raise the price of the regular Switch by €10~€20 (probably to justify the EU Lite price)
@sanderev I did calculate the US price including highest taxes possible in the US (because taxes differ per state) and even then it still way more expensive in the EU/UK.
I want one but I can’t decide on color. I’m thinking blue just to be fun and make a change but it may distract from the onscreen action?
This, ladies and gentlemen, is the very definition of first world problems...
I just can't wait for the Pokemon themed lite
20% of the British price is tax, 0% of the US price is tax, so they are reasonably close
@Rayquaza2510
200 dollar = 178 euro according to google.
178 euro + VAT (21% here in the Netherlands) is around 215 euro.
Now let's say around 10 euro of import tax, and we are very close to the price of 229,95 here in the Netherlands. (What remains is a little bit of margin for the store)
Nintendo doesn't give a price suggestion in Europe, since that's illegal.
@StinkyHat It's been like that for a while $ in € ...
Im waiting for a links awakening switch lite. Take my money on that one.
$329 AUD and an original is $388 AUD...
Too expensive in UK, 200 pounds.
In EU it would usually be 200 euros because of included taxes but no, it's 240 euros.
In short, way TOO expensive in UK and in EU even including taxes.
@Hissscratch139 EU taxes. It was always like that. In Germany, it should be sold at 199,00 €
No TV hook up!
No deal.
@sanderev Do you think that there is no margin for US stores?
@BlueOcean Ofcourse they do. But I don't think EU stores sell American consoles. The EU has different tax laws on imported goods from China (where the consoles are manufactured) compared to the US. That does impact the price. For instance, if Trump gets his increased import tax on Chinese products the dollar price will go up.
Also the EU price is set by the retailers, NOT Nintendo. Retailers often look at the US price and add taxes to that. (They actually do this with all consoles, not just Nintendo, and other products as well)
@JackAwesome there is rumours of the original switch getting a better revision coming soon around the same time as the lite. Would not be surprised if they then announced a links awakening edition to release on the same day as the lite and zelda LA
@sanderev $199 = €177 = 21% tax = 37.17 = €214.17
So almost €215 so €239 is still more.
Looking at the UK then, $199 = £158 = 20% tax = £31.60 = £189.60
However that's not how tax works for these companies, that's how tax works if I would import one from the US myself.
Also even then the Switch is easy to obtain in the EU for as low as €290, even if I look at the lowest Lite pre-order price which is €229 then that is still just a €61 difference ($68.11) between both in EU, looking at how much the Switch Lite lacks the regular Switch would be a better buy, if the Switch Lite was €199 then it would be worth it.
Also excluding taxes the Switch Lite is $199 in the US while the regular Switch is around $299 with taxes, the state with highest tax rate on sales seems to be California which is 7.25%
$199 + 7.25% = roughly $213.50 = €189.72
We can do number crunching all day, in the end the EU and UK price is unfair.
@Rayquaza2510 However you are not paying US taxes in Europe. You could import it directly from the US but then the prices are:
1. The base ($199)
2. The sales tax in the US.
3. Import & Handling taxes (21% (in the Netherlands))
4. Handling fee of the carrier (around € 12)
You will be very close or over the Dutch retail price of € 229.
Ofcourse Nintendo distributes the consoles in the Netherlands (Nintendo Benelux) and sells the consoles to the retailers (I don't know this price, but let's say it's € 179) now the retailer needs to sell the console to the consumer.
When you buy the console here, you pay:
1. The base price (€179)
2. Tax (21%) (€ 37,59)
3. The margin of the store (around € 14, in this example)
We don't know price 1 and 3 exactly. We don't know how much it costs Nintendo to ship the console here. We also do not know how much the margin of the store is. In the end we have too many variables to make a guess if we're paying to much or not.
My final point is: should it be € 199? It would be nice, but no.
Really its not that bad... considering its handheld only, the quality of the games available and the system itself really does merit the price.
The 3DS Xl wasn't too far off after the price drop.
The Vita was waaay more, especially if you include the vita memory cards and this is better than both by a clear mile.
@Johnspants depends on where you live. In Montana for example you pay 0% sales tax so $199 is the final price there
Yup and Oregon too. If it wasn't for our tax it'd be cheaper here
@Hissscratch139 because though Nintendo makes quality games, money prioritizes customer satisfaction, this is the way most Japanese businesses treat their consumers, especially in foreign countries.
Just pre-ordered a yellow one on Amazon!
@KIRO I'm getting the yellow one because back in the day I had a yellow game boy color.
@Ex-Globetard yeah keep the lineage going ! I had a yellow pikachu pedometer once upon a time ...
I went with Turquoise, also to keep a lineage going. My first 3DS was the Aqua one.
The Switch itself is the SAME PRICE in UK and US!!
UK price includes UK tax (20%)
US price doesn't include tax (at worst just over 12% to $225 ~ £191)
It's not Nintendo's fault UK has crappy high tax.
What are you guys going to do with drifting sticks in your ordered Switch Lite after a year? Buying the next one or disassemble the whole thing? I think, it would make sense to offer a drifting assurance for about 50€ a year.
Personally, I would never buy a Lite in the EU, as long as sticks are not repaired for free like in the US.
I remember when people round these parts said the Switch was too expensive and nobody will pay that price.
36.87 million units later...
can you have like two switches with the same account and play the digital games you have purchased? or if I get one of these it'll be a blank slate and have to rebuy everything?
@mr12calvin These US prices are propably without taxes, the 229 price in the Netherlands (according to Nedgame.nl) includes tax.
I am highly tempted to get one of the Pokemon edition Switch Lite just to keep unopened for my collection.
I think that the Switch Lite is really cute looking, and I want to use it, BUT I just can not justify using a lower powered system with less features solely because it looks cute.
That Zacian and Zamazenta edition is pretty cool...but I'm still firmly in Camp OG Switch.
Good old shopto shaved off 14 large in the uk. Pence that is
No thank you, I have had a PS Vita before. I enjoy having the ability to play on tv.
£199.85 still isn't a good conversion rate from USD to GBP...
It's so expensive in Europe, I'm going to try to find a better deal or bundle or something...
Would you join me for a Black Friday or Christmas sales hunt?
@Pokefanmum82 So you'd rather buy the C$379 Switch over a C$219 PS4?
@setezerocinco Those taxes and other bizzare EU rules are the main reason the UK has brexit, people liked the 'Commonwealth' back in the 70's but don't feel it's like that anymore.
Don't believe the propaganda that we don't like foreign people, it's so not true.
Would really like to hold one in my hands first before deciding to buy a Switch Lite. I play mainly docked anyway so not sure I'll bother.
@Hissscratch139 Because tax mate. Here and there.
I have no interest in the Pokemon games but you can get both the games with the Pokemon Sword and Shield themed Switch lite for less than £300 even i will admit that is a great deal
I have pre-ordered the turquoise one. My Switch classic will remain docked and become my secondary console with regards to my eshop accounts. This way I'll be able to play downloaded games on both devices.
@InAnotherCastle Yeah if I have just one Switch that will play my games offline it will be the Switch Lite, as this seems like it will be my new go-to on the go console. I always thought the Switch was cool but a bit too bulky to work as my go-to portable and the Switch Lite seems to address this issue. My launch Switch is going to be just a home console with this around, and you really only need offline for when you are out and about.
i think i will wait for the pikachu edition..(if there will be one)
@Bunkerneath
Not completely, it has a d-pad which I’d give my left joy-con to have on my original Switch.
All these preorder pages and we still don't know what the damn thing looks like outside of the one trailer we got.
I've just changed my pre-order from Lite to the updated version of the classic Switch. Having realized that what I really wanted was additional battery, I feel like this is the best option. And my old Switch will remain as the living room stationary console, as planned.
@Hissscratch139 it's 270gbp where I live so yeah, don't complain
preorders are around 219 euros in most of the retailers in Spain...
@Hissscratch139 We don't have VAT in the USA. Also our consumer protection laws are weaker. There are costs to being able to return items for such a long time.
Can I pre-order a second one in a year and one month when the joysticks break out of warranty? Would save time.
I like the turquoise, but I already have a Switch and need to save my money for school.
Why would anybody buy a Switch Lite when there's a perfectly 'un-gimped' version already on the market that is cheaper than an xbox or PS4?
Here in Sweden it has a cost of 2590kr which equals to 250US dollars.. A bit expensive
@Hissscratch139 That's exactly what I always think when I want a new piece of tech and I watch a review.
@Hungryluma it's a pretty simple handheld with software we are already familiar with, what do you need to look at besides the exterior?
Oh Hi Brexit
I was looking forward to this as I love handheld.more than console...buy considoring the battery on V2 is still better then the handheld lite itself I'll look at V2 as there gonna be more games no doubt that don't support the lite version ..makes sense spend £80 and get the new version
Have all 4 variants pre-ordered. Can't wait to get my hands on these
I had yellow preordered then cancelled it for the gray one. I'm definitely in the minority but that's ok. Gray fits my mood these days 😂🙌
199.99 United States Dollar currently equals 165.77 Pound sterling (2 Sep, 22:22 UTC). google.co.uk/search?q=199.99+usd
£199.99 with the VAT removed = £166.66.
Almost EXACTLY THE SAME!
REMEMBER people ....exchange rates DO fluctuate! (all the time!)
ShopTo.Net the 3 colours are £187.85
Zacian/Zamazenta Edition is £189.85
UK folk need to stop moaning
I don’t need this, I already have a Switch, but for some reason I REALLY want it...
They got ahold of Me with the Lion King, and Aladdin games (SNES?)
@JRJalapeno Maybe you’ll get lucky and that gray will turn to yellow, like my SNES. 😜
Can I regularly transfer my saves back and for between a Switch Lite and the standard Switch? For instance, could I keep the main one docked and take the Lite with me, yet still keep them both sync’d up?
@Hordak yes there's an option for that already in place. You can transfer save files between your primary and secondary systems.
With switch online, the games that can use cloud backup will sync automatically, but the manual save data transfer is still available regardless of subscription status.
Oh NL, you make me so tired sometimes...
@ryancraddock the Amazon links under "where to buy it in the UK" link to Amazon.com.
@Blizzia The Amazon links send you to the store for whichever country you are viewing it from usually (unless that country doesn't have a link to go to).
For example, I'm based in the UK, so clicking on UK or US Amazon links above automatically takes me to the UK site. I can only assume the UK links are taking you to US because you're not based in the UK? 🙂
@ryancraddock I'm always automatically taken to the UK store, because I live in Denmark.
I'm only taken to the US store from your links.
Also, since they are supposed to be for UK users to click... Maybe just make them actual set links leading ONLY to the UK store?
No point doing anything else.
@Blizzia I've tweaked how this works as you don't live somewhere with a specific Amazon store, you'll be taken to the one you clicks. Cheers!
@antdickens Working excellently! My lazy clickhating hands will praise your name for decades to come!
Thanks
I can easily find a Switch for 220 where I live. Lite is too expensive. Should have been 150.
@SonOfVon Yes you can. You simply have to set one of your Switches as the 'Primary' console and the second as the secondary console. The primary console can be taken any where, whereas the second needs a constant Wi-Fi connection.
But I don't want to buy another home console, I want a handheld already, and according to Nintendo, their fanboys, and Wikipedia, 3DS has no successor, because Switch Lite is simply a Switch, a home console, and I want to play on the go with a handheld! Come on, Nintendo give me another handheld system to play already, the 3DS is REALLY old!!
@purplesodium having Amazon US Import you a Switch Lite to UK, you would need to pay 20% VAT as well. So would end up more expensive!
196€ on the French Amazon.
199€ elsewhere in France.
VAT included.
Currys / Pc world doing a cracking deal... £219 Switch Lite and Link's Awakening. You can also get it with other games for the same price.
