PlatinumGames' upcoming action game Astral Chain has become available to pre-purchase on the European Nintendo Switch eShop. With this, the game's file size and a splattering of other info has been revealed.
Let's jump straight into the magic number. According to the listing, the digital version of Astral Chain will take up 9.6GB of space on your Switch.
The listing also confirms that the game will support all three of the Switch's gameplay modes - TV, Tabletop, and Handheld (which incidentally means that it will, of course, be playable on Switch Lite); that it supports 1-2 players; that the Pro Controller is supported; and that Japanese, English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Russian, Korean, and Chinese languages are available.
Interestingly, the listing notes that save data cloud support is "pending".
Were you thinking of buying this one digitally or physically? Does the file size change your thought process? As ever, make sure to let us know in the comments below.

First... Yey. And got this on preorder physically. Can't wait
Always digitally.
Day one! I've not been excited for a Platinum game since....never really. This looks great!
as long as digital is at least 20% more expensive than physical here I will always get physical!
@gamermole I'm watching you...
Going digital, I'm lazy.
@Spoony_Tech you should try their games, they are all above an 85-90. Just skip the Activision stuff.
Physical all the way and I have this bad boy already preordered AND paid in full. Just counting the days...
On per-order physically. As Long as I can get a bettee price physically, it will always be my first choice,
Preordered the physical version as soon as I could. I'm often not the biggest fan of Platinum's games for whatever reason but this one is looking extremely great and I'm really excited for it. Hopefully it meets my expectations.
No question! Always physical!
Physical for me. Will the game ship on 8gb cart with day 1 mandatory download of a couple of gigs or come on a 16gb cart I wonder....
They really should remaster Vanquish for Switch and make Wonderful 102
It says 1-2 players but is that local only or online as well?
Let's get physical, physical for me at least.
Under 10gb isn't bad at all. I already bought one of those £80 tickets from the E-shop which gets you two full priced games, I'm using one for Fire Emblem and the other for this game.
Digital of course. So convenient
@BANJO : It will be on a 16GB cart. There are plenty of games that are just over 8GB that would obviously require a larger cartridge, even though it may be of slight inconvenience to the publisher. Another example is Go Vacation, which only just barely hovered over 8GB and required a 16GB cartridge.
And as is common practice nowadays, there will most likely be a day one patch, but I doubt it would have anything to do with skimping on cartridge costs, but due to deadlines taking predence over producing a quality product.
@jcboyer515 usually it would make more sense, but THIS IS... SWITZERLAND!
100% Physical.
The way they hold their value, I can get 50% back on Switch games when I trade it at Amazon months after release.
10GB is very reasonable. I'll definitely use one of my vouchers on this.
Not a huge Platinum fan, but this game looks awesome.
@jcboyer515 @Silly_G Thanks for the confirmation. I did think that surely would be the case for this. If it's all on the cart providing it gets at least 8/10 it's physical day 1 for me...
Sweet. I just bought some more eShop vouchers specifically for this one.
July 31 is supposed to be the final day to buy vouchers, so I’m gonna stock up.
I am still hoping the Collectors Edition will come to the US.
Physical for me. If it's an option, I always go for a physical release.
Looks great, getting a physical copy.
I think digital for me. We will see...
It’s really hard for me to picture a high action game like Platinum is known for to be playable on handheld with such a small screen and cheap joysticks like what the joy con has. I never played Bayonetta handheld, so maybe somebody could vouch for it being a good way to play. But docked with a pro controller is definitely the most viable way to play these types of games.
I'll be grabbing this physical, but sometime after release. I've spent enough on games lately and already have a couple of preorders down for September. XD That time period of 2019 will not be easy on my wallet.
9.6GB, sounds like a physical order if I ever buy it.
Always digital of course.
But does it support wireless play?
Preordered the cart and hell-bent on finishing Hollow Knight by then so I have plenty of time for the Chain gang! 😄
I love having multilingual speech and text in games - might as well brush up on Japanese a bit while gaming!
Definitely getting this one.
@personauser93 I played Bayonetta 1 100% handheld and it was perfect.
@LunarFlame17 same. I've been digital only from the Wii u onwards and love it.
(which incidentally means that it will, of course, be playable on Switch Lite)
We hopefully aren't going to mention this with every game going forward, right guys?
Does it officially run at 30fps? Inquiring minds want to know : )
Day one Digital, always!
The other day my friends were trying to borrow my games (which I hate ). Luckly all my games are digital so I smiled and said, “sorry, all my games digital.” 😂😈
@60frames-please I would assume since it's Platinum and a character action game, it's 60fps, but based on footage from E3, it looked to be 30fps.
Just maxed out my 400 gb card so I guess physical.
preordered this for around 45,00 €, which is a better deal than the coupons :3.
Most of the games with the Nintendo vouchers are games I own or don’t want. This is one I finally want that I don’t have
@yuwarite Yeah, that's what bothers me about it. I like to think Platinum games will always be 60fps, but it looks otherwise in this unfortunate case. I love both Bayonettas, but wouldn't be nearly as jazzed about them if they ran at 30fps...
Very excited for this.
Physical for me. Managed to snag a pre order for 20% off during Wal-Mart's E3 sale
Limited edition for me, baby!
Awesome, definitely using one of my vouchers for this.
As for the other the other...hmmm I'm still not 100% sure on FE, but Astral Chain looks amazing!
Less than 10 gig? That is half of what NBA 2k19 is! Might have to replace NBA if I get bored with it!
Physical for me.
Based on the comments so far, just for fun manual counting hehe. 12 wants to go Digital and 18 wants the Physical version. Make that 19 because Physical is for me! I now have 8 Cartridges! I mean its nice to own al our game and who knows in the future i might still gain a small profit for selling these when the time comes theres a new nintendo console with different cartridge. I really think Physical will never get old same as having a console vs game streaming (google stadia) but its always nice to have options.
@fafonio Vanquish was amazing, handheld would be mind blowing
Digital with one of those vouchers.
Going digital with Nintendo Vouchers offering. Getting Fire Emblem and Astral chain
I usually get digital but I decided to go with the collectors edition
@Laxus Can you not order the collectors edition from amazon Japan?
@slaine
High five !
I don’t buy anything physical anymore
Definitely physical. The cover art is awesome
Going physical on this and Link’s Awakening. I’m still debating on Dragon Quest and Fire Emblem. With Cyberpunk, Luigi, and Pokémon it’s a good year full of hard choices since I like to play and experience everything a game has to offer before moving on to the next one. We will see...
@fafonio I beg to to differ when you are talking about Transformers: Devastation. I absolutely love that game. That was a licensed title done right. I haven't played any of the other supposedly bad 'PlatinumGames/Activision' games, but TF:Devastation is one I am going to rule out. I don't see anything wrong with it. The fan service is a great bonus (including original voice actors and music composer from the G1 cartoon), but the gameplay is just as good as any other Platinum game. Unfortunately, I don't think it will see a Switch release. They've already taken it down from Steam. I'm assuming it has something to do with licensing issues with the toy line.
Does this game have a rating yet?
This is one of the upcoming games I want to get. But all I want to know is if it’s open world or not. My take is if they haven’t revealed that yet then it probably isn’t. Open world maps are always a selling point
Bayonetta 2 is over 14GB, this is a lot smaller. I think this will be a short gaming experience.
@slaine I know, there’s no excuse why digital shouldn’t be 20% cheaper than retail at a minimum, especially seeing as there’s less value to the customer...
@roboshort Unfortunately no.
@Keywork Yeah, rated T.
@TheAwesomeBowser
Nice.
Always physical. I hardly do digital, unless if it is a small game (which are most retro or indie).
Had it preordered since it was announced. I only go physical unless there is a huge discount or a game is only available digitally.
@Laxus get a life child goodbye
