One of the earliest Nintendo 64 titles to truly dazzle gamers was Turok: Dinosaur Hunter. At a time when many FPS titles still employed 2D sprites, this full-3D shooter really impressed and was arguably something of a killer app for the console.
It has now been confirmed that the game - alongside its sequel, Turok 2: Seeds of Evil - will be coming to the Switch. The original Turok will launch on March 18th for $19.99. Release details for Turok 2 have yet to be confirmed.
Are you keen to revisit these two 64-bit classics, foggy visuals and all? Let us know with a comment.

This will bring back memories yet I assure you, these games have not aged well.
That price... ha.
Physical twin pack on one cart and £20 and we can talk....
As long as I can use the cheat code to get all the weapons it's day one for me 😁
HUZZAH!
Look at that cover art. One day, games will look as good as that!
I loved the first game back in the day, but I can’t imagine it’s aged well. I might buy it anyway though. Maybe it’s aged great!
I didn't get it the first time, nor will I be getting it this time.
Meanwhile, Xbox Classic games (e.g. Star Wars games) cost 990 HUF (~3.5 USD) apiece on Xbox One X store.
I seriously don't understand retro publishing companies on the Switch...
The games looked poor in their day... No thanks.
these games were already outdated the day they came out.
people need to stop pretending late 1990s shooters aged well.
All I remember is Turok 2 looking significantly better than its predecessor, but the checkpoints were far apart and brutal.
Turok: Evolution or GTFO!
That price is a joke right?
All this tells me is..... TUROK CONFIRMED FOR SMASH!!
I did love these back in the day and will most likely pick em up. Having said that, I really can’t imagine they aged well.... most N64 games haven’t aged well mainly due to modern control schemes and control pads. I’m gonna cross my fingers and hope that at that price there’s at least some remastering.... can keep the graphics nearly the same, just remove the fog and make it a stable frame rate, 30 or 60 locked, I don’t care.
Both were fun games. I played 2 way more then the original. I'm not interested in purchasing these though. They would have to be significant upgrades and that doesn't appear to be true. Turek 2 was an amazing graphical leap in console gaming though. I don't remember anything looking like that at the time
Oh and I had to double check the frickin calendar.... the headline made me think it was April 1st!
Waaaaay too expensive.
The Turok games were some of the few FPS games I actually liked.
@Juma009 It is worth noting that this'll likely be akin to the remasters on PC and Xbox one, which seem to smooth over much of the technical woes of the originals. May make the difference
@Kainbrightside Good is debatable, but I had fun with em and I’m not a big FPS fan by any means - most give me motion sickness.
@HeroOfCybertron Same here, it was like these and Goldeneye, pretty much it for FPS for me at the time. Oh and Doom games. Lol
Edit - And I will never forget the Cerebral Bore. Still to this day the most epic weapon in any game....
Edit 2 - I take that back, Dead Rising TNT Lawn Dart combo wins out.... barely. 😆😆
I hope they keep the fog, it just won’t be the same game without it
Excellent news. Turok 2 is fantastic it was always just crippled by a truly awful framerate on the N64.
@Gerbwmu
I could never get over the wretched framerate in Turok 2. Even back in the 90's it was awful; I assume the re-release will remedy that.
I always loved part one, but no it hasn't aged very well. Not paying $20, that's for sure. $5 and we'll talk
I absolutely loved Turok on the N64... I downloaded tiny videos from the World Wide Web via dial-up connection (overnight) before the game was released... it was the first game I ever pre-ordered and I begged my mom to drive me to KB Toys at the mall to pick it up on release day (45 minutes each way, on a school night). It was my birthday present that year and cost $80, which is equivalent to $125 in today's terms.
The Switch releases would need an extensive "remaster" for me to have any interest... the graphics were impressive at the time, but playing them in the present day, on modern televisions, will be a mess. On top of that, clunky controls and outdated game design... no thanks.
I want to replay these game so bad, but I think I will have to watch a Let's Play first just in case the games have aged horribly.
@Juma009 Still a day one for me. Can we pre-purchase yet?
@holygeez03 Omg.... Kaybee Toys.... it’s been forever since I’ve heard of anyone else mention them. We use to have one at our local mall, as well as a Disney Store. I miss them so much!
That was unexpected..
Is this a remaster or a straight up "port"?
@construx The price is the same as on Xbox, which is also the same as Steam.
I remember Turok's music to be more than awesome, especially in Turok 2 with its incredible 8 plus minute orchestrated scores. (Still own the black Turok 2 cartridge)
Doom's definitely aged better than these games. Pixel art in the 90s still looks absolutely timeless.
Aged well or not, I'm getting these. Never beat them the first time around but now I can play them on commutes!
@Cosats I was just about to mention the music. Probably not to everyone's tastes but I have both versions of the soundtrack. If this is based on the PC version, all the better.
Everyone saying these games haven't aged well are crazy imo. Yeah sure maybe if you're playing the actual N64 originals. But these are the remastered versions from Steam a few years ago, and later ported to Xbox one.
They do a lot to improve the controls and make navigating the stages easier. They're a blast to play, especially the 2nd one.
@Dm9982
KayBee... Babbages... Electronics Boutique... Software Etc... these were like free amusement parks for my childhood.
I’m so excited about this, I’ve been blowing up Twitter and calling out that Nintendo Life needs to report on this and here we are— they’re already on it. Oh why have I doubted you. These are two games I will be buying immediately and probably double dipping if they release a physical edition with. I have played these games so much on N64 and also on Steam so I know how they’ve aged. It’s safe to say they’re still as enjoyable for me as they’ve always been. I don’t play Call of Duty or Battlefield or any of the newer FPSs so I’m good here. It’s what I’m used to. SUCH GOOD NEWS!!
Wasn't that interested in these on Xbox as they don't look to have aged well. Tempted for the Switch version of Turok 2 when its on sale.
Beware oblivion is at hand
oh! it's nostalgia all over again. just playing Turok on a Nintendo console bring good memories of playing it on N64 all over again.
all we need now is the remake of Turok 3, and we are good to go!
I'm just going to sit here and wait for the same damn people that stood screaming and kicking at Nintendo's door to finally release some N64 and/or GameCube titles on the Switch, to now do a full turn and complain about how they don't want N64 games on Switch after all, because, well... you know, they look really bad and haven't aged very well at all...
Oh, wait...
@Wavey84 Unecessary ports only to you. The rest of us find them more than welcome, especially when it comes to the Turok games.
@Gerbwmu These games were remastered in HD for Steam and released at that price. I think they should be cheaper as you can pick them up for a few pounds. I would assume these would also be the HD remasters. I liked them back in the day, but they wont have aged well at all. The T-Rex in the original Turok was one of my favourite N64 gaming moments.
Turok was the first game I ever rented (my first console was the N64 with Super Mario 64), have a lot of special memories of it, and I can't remember whether I ever actually finished it.
I did do pretty much everything in the second one though, I will probably get that eventually.
I AM TUROK!
The second game have me motion sickness for some reason. Won't be revisiting but it was an interesting game at the time. Some really difficult platforming bits though.
@Venus_Adept good old times...
@Lizuka You are so right. N64 has the best wrestling games
I enjoyed both games 20 years ago. They were really tough but very fun. Seeds of Evil was very beautiful in terms of visuals and audio!!!!! I'm not sure I'd pay 20 bucks each these days
@Gerbwmu
Wasn't Turok 2 one of the few games that could use the N64 RAM pack?
I liked both games back on the N64 but they've not aged well. The price is ridiculous too, around $10 each would be more reasonable.
A new Turok game, absolutely. A twenty-two-year-old Turok game, not so much.
This interests me. As a kid I remember playing these. I want to see gameplay because I believe these have aged horrendously
The frame rates was so bad on the N64 when you had a fews Dinosaurs and foot solders as the same time. Would be great to experience the games without the issues.
Alright Nightdive, now that you have these out of the way, it's time to start remastering the Extreme G series.
Had to check the date to see if it was April 1st already. I love old games (currently playing Sword of Vermilion on SEGA Megadrive Classics), but these probably will be difficult to go back to.
So I just played Turok for the first time a couple months ago, and I fell in love with the game. It's a product of it's time, sure, but its still fun today
These ports are based off the remasters for the PC, which come with both features and quirks, such as the fog being pushed back, with the option to push it so far back that you see unintended consequences, such as floating enemies in rooms meant to be hidden away. Definitely the best way to enjoy the games in a modern age, as they have unlocked framerates, and Turok 2 has online multiplayer.
@ThanosReXXX I know right. Some people saying 90s shooters haven’t aged well. Well I think Doom, duke nukem, half life, powerslave(exhumed) etc etc are all still a lot of fun.
@GrailUK (use to think like that back in the days) now looks better than the cover😁 in present age far better.
Sweet! Can we also get the rest of the N64 library? It would be nice to finally have an N64 on the go console, and I'd rather them be released on the eshop than temporarily stream them with NSO.
@Jazzem yes I heard it's the newest versions not the direct n64 versions
I got Turok 2 on the Xbox One when it was on sale for 50% off. At $10 it isn't a bad retro shooter but for $20 it's kind of a joke. The game honestly hasn't aged well at all and since I didn't play it as a kid I had to watch someone play it in a walkthrough just to figure out how to get started lol.
Hooray! Here’s your N64 games, folks!! All of you that wanted N64 games should buy these so it’s clear that owners want more! Don’t forget, this is what you wanted.
It’s like they were watching the Corrupt-A-Wish thread.
These games will have aged brilliantly, no doubt. And if they can keep Turok 2 to £30, then we can have them both for £50 - a steal.
That price is awful... But might bite on Turok 2.
20 bucks for an N64 game on Switch is a bit much. But on the other hand, I really want more N64 games so I might just cave and buy it to hopefully encourage more releases.
Not gonna lie, I'd happy pay 20 bucks each for Mario 64, Star Wars Rogue Squadron, Star Wars Shadows of the Empire.
And if they could make it connect to the re-releases of the Game Boy Pokemon games - Pokemon Stadium 1 and 2. - I can't play those games without the Game Boy connections though.
I assume these are the same Nightdive Studios remastered version I have on steam... they did an excellent job.
$20 for a remaster isn't bad. I already have the first one on Xbox, but I may pick up the second one at some point.
Any and all N64 ports are welcome (well, maybe not Superman). KEEP EM COMING!
Please tell me they're remastered...
Edit: NVM. An earlier comment said it would be. That's cool and surprising since it's not a Nintendo first party game being remastered.
$10 at best. $20 and i block you
I'm hoping it's from the team that did the remasters for Steam, and that they continue to make more of those (up to Evolution, my favorite in the series).
I was seriously thinking today about how I would love to see the Turok series on the Switch!
I welcome any N64 rerelease/remaster. N64 is one of my favorite consoles. It was the first console I bought as an adult. Turok will be a day one purchase for me. Now I want Microsoft to release Rare Replay and Nintendo to do a compilation of first party N64 titles. Probably won't happen, but I can dream.
I have a feeling the people saying this game wasn't good looking even for it's time haven't played it back then or any other games at the time.
@TossedLlama on the ninth day god created Turok
These games deserve a true next-gen sequel, IMHO. I spent countless hours playing the originals but unless they receive a serious graphics upgrade I have no desire to endure that fog and gloom today.
Now give me Blast Corps, Tetrisphere and Mystical Ninja, and I will have my dollars ready in neat little piles.
An enhanced Gauntlet 64 would be neat
Turok is one of the only N64 games I didn't own. I'm excited to give the remastered version a shot now that the controls and graphics have been touched up.
I have fond memories of playing Turok way back, especially having fun with entering cheat codes. Went back and tried it a couple of years ago and it hasn't aged very well, but was still kinda OK. But the asking price for this? Heeeell nooo! Maybe if the game is remastered and the controls are improved, but in its original state? That's too much!
This game was huge, but i loved it.
Love Turok and the sound is 😙👌
However I’ll be waiting for the N64 mini before jumping back in.
Mother!
@Dm9982 Pretty sure this will be high res and 60fps. I think it's on Steam and looks good in terms of resolution and framerate on weak PCs. This should be fun! I do wish it was cheaper. Maybe a sale will come along eventually.
@Dm9982 if it's a port of the xbox version then it is remastered. Reworked ambient lighting, textures, frame rate etc. Check out turok 2 xbox one on the tube. It looks aloooooooot better than the origional.
I remember playing Turok 2 over at a friend's house in the late 90s, shortly after its release, and I was begging him to use the nuke weapon. He said he wasn't allowed to because he used it before and his parents got mad because the loud explosion sound of the nuke almost ruined the sound system of the big-screen tv that they had. After pressuring him for another few minutes, he used the weapon with the volume turned up, and the sound system crackled and and sounded distorted. His parents rushed in and were very angry about it all. We didn't get to play that game again.
Yeah does anyone know if this is the nightdive remaster versions?
Those games were great. I'll definetly buy them on Switch! That music was just as memorable in the first Turok!
@Juma009
I'm playing the sequel on the original hardware these days, and while it fixes some of the issues of the first game, it comes with a host of new ones of its own.
One instance is the first level, which was visibly over-ambitious from the design team's hand, and has these giant gates seperating the different areas.
These were meant to open up when conditions were met, but instead, you're guided in through these weird little bland hallways that lead around the gates, or led to a teleporter that just teleports you to the other side.
Obviously, the already choppy framerate was absolutely murdered by trying to reveal an entire area at once, while a different one was still in memory.
@SnackBox Yes, yes they are. They released these back in 2015 on PC and more recently on Xbox One. I'm interested to see them on Switch as I was a fan of the originals on N64 back in the day. But personally I'll hold out for $10 or less each on digital.
Great news, terrible price. Put both games on a physical for this amount or a little more and i would be interested. I still own both games in both Japanese and PAL.
I hope they keep the fog it.
oh, the fog, such a.. foggy experience Turok 1 was.
Beware, Oblivion is at hand.
I would buy both if they were on physical cartridge like their old N64 versions.
20 each? Wow. One might think about it if it was 20 both, even physical if you ask me.
I remember playing Turok 2 in the dark and one of the big dinosaur/gorilla type big guys jumping out on me when my mind I wasn't really 'on' the game.
It was the first time a 3D game was immersive enough with just enough f a realistic-look to scare the s**t out of me. It was the first time I felt like I fully crossed the reality barrier with a game and for a moment was IN the game with the big scary bast**d coming straight for me.
I almost pooped myself. I'm not sure I could handle that with modern graphic and VR, but back then ... good times . So Turok 2 has a very specific historic place for me in gaming.
Got both in a Steam sale and have been loving them. Playing a good simple old school FPS in 1080/60 is always nice.
They will still look better than Ark on Switch...
@Juma009 They've actually aged better than you remember (certainly with the little tweaks and fixes in the remasters). I was playing the PC version of the remaster only a couple of months ago and it's still a load of fun:
And I also actually like how simple and clean and readable the graphics and levels are (visually). I often find modern fps games just way too over designed, with far too much fluff and clutter in the levels (from the actual geometry itself to all the small and large objects littered everywhere, even the textures), such that you often can't really read them clearly at a quick glance, which is simply bad design as far as I'm concerned.
If it gets a physical release in any way, I'll get it day one.
@Charlie_Girl I play Goldeneye and perfect dark every few months and they still play great.
I remember seeing Turok on the shelf in Woolworths priced at £70 (£125 today!). Most expensive I saw was WWF No Mercy at £80.
I didn't think much of the five minutes or so I played of the first one, but I've always been curious to see if the cerebral bore in Turok 2 is as awesome as N64 Magazine said. Might end up trying these two out then, and seeing if they work well with retro-bit's upcoming remake of the Hori 64 pad.
Please bring Turok Evolution from the Gamecube! Me and my brothers favourite FPS of all time!
@Charlie_Girl people need to stop pretending late 1990s shooters aged well.
People also need to stop pretending that indie games that look like they belong on the NES look good.
@nintendobynature rbnsmth. All these years and I still remember that code.
I had a mate that insisted Turok was better than Goldeneye. Complete and utter total smeghead that he was.
If nintendo won't make VC, we'll do it on our own terms.
game wasn't good when it came out...neither was Goldeneye, throw your sticks and stones...but I was there...I remember...I just kept playing Doom until UT
£20 is a bit steep for (I know its remastered/ported) an N64 game. If they both came on one cart physically for £25 I would.
Otherwise will probably wait until it cheap, do remember playing it on the N64 and liking it.
@Wesker I'd say in many ways they were better single player games. Turok came in slightly before Golden Eye, about half a year so they both stand on their own as pioneers in console FPS in that regard.
Having played both remakes on PC I can say they are still quite fun fast paced shooters, simple and charming but the the price is not justified, usually they are about 5 euro if I recall on sale so wait for that.
Both games look old, still have the fog sport reflective water and 'godrays'
Yeah, no thanks for 20 bucks for just the 1, especially knowing this game probably hasn't aged well lol.
I paid $80.00 back when this game originally launched. Had to order a memory card as well. So many memories. First console game to simulate true PC controls with using the C-Buttons to move and the analog stick for aiming. I thought it was perfect.
@Dethmunk They're not remakes but they are remasters, and actually looks good from this comparison video from an xbox one comparison video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6lPxiHSNNs0&t=160s
I agree, $20 is a crazy asking price, but better than capcom with their Resident Evil switch tax for NO reason. These turok remasters released on Ps4 and XBO at $20 as well when first released
Finally! So excited. These are my favorite.
Is this any kind of remaster or something? I'm not paying $20 for a straight-up N64 port.
@Ricochet72 This is a remaster with High definition textures.
@Charlie_Girl And You need to stop pretending people think all the same.I will buy this game day 1.
@cherryghost41 This is a remaster with HD textures and better performance, You can check it out on Youtube the difference between the original and the remastered version.
@Mr_Pepperami Exactly. Still playing some of them on various consoles, and all kinds of mods on PC.
I got these on Xbox One. They're great. But they removed split-screen multiplayer
Played both on the n64. Excellent games for the time. Got the updated version of Turok 2 on the xbox1 on sale at Christmas. Excellent update but bear in mind these are old school shooters and they do not hold your hand. I had forgotten how huge Turok 2 is.
Old 3D doesn't age as well as pixel art
Sweeeet. Can’t wait to give this one a go!
