It’s pretty easy to bag on Nintendo for the company’s near constant deluge of system updates, most of which are used solely to combat piracy in nearly invisible code updates that “enhance stability”. A web browser? eShop Music? Home Screen themes? Nonsense, Nintendo knows that what you need is more stability, but the latest system update does this and more.
Nintendo Switch Version 5.0.2 is now available for download, and it actually does something that the end user may find welcome. An issue with faulty motion controls in some games was addressed, as well as a bug where the user icons of some recommended friends wouldn’t display properly. All of that pales in comparison, of course, to the one and only feature that justifies yet another one of these articles: Nintendo has deployed the latest version of its famed stability to the console, and boy does it make that Switch feel solid.
What do you think? Did you notice any motion control issues before this? When do you think the company will start adding features to the OS? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

I hope next update will tolerate 3rd parties devices.
It does more than you think!
Of course! I use it as my portable stove!
...but in all seriousness, updates are great!
I'm hoping the Switch turns out like the 3DS by the end of its life, hell the 3DS didn't even have an eshop when it launched, and look at it now. Adding a bunch of features without slowing down the home menu much would be the best outcome!
@Ham-n-jam yeah 3DS came a lonngggg way!
@Ham-n-jam It's a fair bet that there will be many surprises, especially since their Online service hasn't launched yet.
Just don't get too attached to anything, as features slowly get killed off over time. RIP Miiverse, Nintendo Video Channel, Swapnote, etc
"It does more than you think!"
...Don't...reads article
I didn't experience any of these issues and feel my Switch is stable enough.
Should I update it to the new version?
What if the Switch becomes too stable, to the point I'm unable to even undock it? Dunno...
We know they are not "slaking" to add major features so if it needs time we should only be supportive and patient, meanwhile finish all the backlog you guys have and "let's a wait"
@Anti-Matter Didn't you smugly write about only buying Nintendo products? But yeah, that would be nice.
I'm not expecting a lot from a change in number after two dots. Noticeably big changes would come with 5.1 or 6.0.
I think this is it. I’m losing hope that they’ll ever be a theme shop like 3DS.
@SmaggTheSmug I doubt we'll see anything notable until the big online update later this year
@SmaggTheSmug
Lol, maybe they allow him to play all the girly cute games in a more efficient way, or to use the "joy" cons to create a more sexy masucline alter ego with sexy arms in a more creative en"joy"able fashion
The real question is, How much more stability will it take before the Switch could beat the 3DS in a fight?
Take a Switch, update it and throw it in the St Andreas fault: no need to monitor seismic activities anymore.
After the update, my Switch had been married for 39 years. Stability confirmed.
great thing about switch is it's portability, I take the dock for holidays and enjoy games after i eventually get back indoors or at least to have a chilled morning with Mrs however would be great to have a netflix on too.. or music.. at least youtube.. or daily motion.. or spotify or web browser... anything please
Can somebody at Nintendo Life please investigate why exactly we aren’t getting really painfully obvious features such as the ones stated in this article?
It seems like there is an awful lot of conjecture and a lot of simply putting up with the ridiculous.
Arent you guys in a position to lobby the desires and concerns of Nintendo fans to the company themselves?
I'm still hoping that they announce some new OS features at E3. But knowing Nintendo they will probably announce nothing and than release a Direct one week later
After patched, my Switch can stands by itself even without the stand. Soooo stable now.
Does anyone else feel that Switch needs even more stability. It still feels kind of unstable to me. I'm scared it might explode when I pick it up.
@HappyMaskedGuy if Nintendo don't give us all te features we want on Switch 1 they will have more selling point for the Switch 2 when they will release it with all those things.
Except the save data backup of courae because they will only give you the cloud option so you will need to pay the subacription to use it.
This update is for the LABO. It's meant to strengthen the cardboard, to make it more durable and stable.
I'm just sitting here, waiting for the headline 'Youtube/Netflix/Twitch app finally comes to Switch'.
Come ON!
If this fixes the aim suddenly whipping upwards in Splatoon 2 at random I'm actually very glad for this update.
Take the "B" out of stable, and you get what these jokes have become.
@KayFiOS well said!
@xHyPnOtiZeDx I would like YouTube with the ability to stream game videos.
My switch drinks all day, and calls me names then tries to cuddle, so I welcome this stability.
@countzero Wouldn't doubt it. They usually focus on upcoming new games for their E3 presentations. Remakes, ports, and VC releases are more likely to be presented during the Treehouse Event, and I'm sure they'll talk about their online service during that time as well.
My Nintendo Switch is at a loop it nevers complains,just stays quite but when the Stability update comes along Bam!!!! It goes into a frenzy going wild and nuts cause it's happy it got a boost and antidote for such terrible unstability yeah so in the end my Switch gets what it wants like a spoiled Brat or pup Lol Good times Good times A coming!!
To me it seems they only have a small internal dev team working on the switch OS with how pawltry the updates are. And if they are more concerned about piracy than feature updates they really need to revise their approach - piracy will always be a concern regardless of platform
yawn
@HappyMaskedGuy I don't think anyone outside of Nintendo has enough influence to actually ask Nintendo such things. Seriously, which company ever answers questions like that?
If they wanted to tell us something, they would have done so already.
Stuff is either not high on the priority list and/or, at least the more important stuff, they are already working on.
You should better tell how MK8D's and Splatoon's multiplayers were accidentally blocked by Roskomnadzor in Russia when they (supposedly) banned Telegram along with millions of IP-addresses.
Do people whine about this with Platstation? PS4 had plenty of updates that do a whole lot of nothing. I am just curious, do you all [removed] and complain about that too?
That’s bull, the Switch isn’t stable the kickstand still sucks.
@Galactus_33 You do realize that the 3ds didn't even have a e-shop at launch. It's all the updates over time that added all these options. By the first year the Switch actually has MORE than the 3DS did by it's first year. You need to have patientce. I'm preety sure a Theme Shop will be added eventually. The 3ds took 4 years to add a theme shop.
@Heavyarms55 Not sure. Why are you asking the NL's community, and not PushSquare's?
It actually really improved the motion controls in some games.
Very nice update by Nintendo i have to say
Now if only the Splatoon 2 severs were always stable.
@TidusUK
"Lol, maybe they allow him to play all the girly cute games in a more efficient way, or to use the "joy" cons to create a more sexy masucline alter ego with sexy arms in a more creative en"joy"able fashion"
Did you mean like this ?
@Anti-Matter My gosh 😂
Yup another update to ignore after hearing all the bricking issues I'm still on 5.0 because everything works just fine... Don't need my monthly update that does nothing but fix something Nintendo probably broke themselves so they can keeps pushing nonsense updates to prevent homebrewing.
@Anti-Matter 😅😅😅
@KayFiOS Because it's here, and from the official posts, as well as the comments, that people whine and complain about these updates.
I want the big updates too. Things like folders, themes and cloud save back ups. But at the same time, there is no reason to complain about background, minor updates like this.
no cloud saves? Don't care
I am starting to regret the purchase of my Nintendo switch. No virtual Consol, no Web browser, no Netflix, I cannot message my friends, invites are nonexistent or broken, there still no voice chat. I’ve gotten to the point where I cannot trust Nintendo anymore. Almost all of their new and exciting content are Wii-U ports. The e-shop is a ongoing joke.
I updated my Switch, and it now has a horse living in it - definitely stable
@Bengals76
Wait, don't go !
Will you still play ARMS Online ?
How about telling the news without this ongoing bad taste of humor, NintendoLife?
Am hoping we'll get Netflix and Youtube soon.
I wonder if this update will make my Joy-Cons charge properly when the system is docked. Lately I keep finding them nearly dead whenever I undock.
It’s baffling.
@Galactus_33 I can promise you there will be a theme shop. If White and Black were going to be the only themes their names wouldn’t be basic white and basic black. Don’t worry, they are coming
AAAARRGGHHHHH I was played like a fiddle!!!! LOL
@Ham-n-jam yes that most certainly would be the best outcome..... if it were 2011. It's 2018 and Nintendo continues to prove it's only really in it for the gimmicks.
You want apps or god forbid cloud saves? Pffft, here's some joy cons that you can hold sideways and play a 2 man game of pac-man with.
@gatorboi352
Do Shut Up !
I just wish they would bring more stability to the Switch...it's still got such a long way to go in the stability stakes.
Stability = the ability to stab.
Hey, does this update fix the issue when you tried to turn off the timer using the Nintendo Parental Controls app when the Switch is in rest mode yet, when you turn the timer off and turn on the Switch, the timer shows it is still on?
@Kirgo What are you talking about?
They could ask about these things in literally any interview with the company.
This is the problem with games journalism. The desire not to rock the boat has killed any investigative, interrogative elements whatsoever, and this is BAD for consumers.
If they expect you to buy into their products, they should also respect and be open to questioning, especially by a videogame news outlet.
Influence shouldnt affect journalistic integrity. It’s not in the public interest.
I'm just here for the stability memes.
@Anti-Matter it's funny, you and I. We're both by and large at odds with this community, for very different reasons. It's a sad, bittersweet bond that we share in this regard. We're inseparable, you see. Our own worst enemies.
Finally!
I was almost going to throw my Switch away because of its instability.
This update prevented that. Thanks Nintendo!
😆
Isn't that a good thing that Nintendo combats hackers? I think it is, cause piracy/hacking is a bad thing imo. Go Nintendo, F hackers.
@Bengals76 All those are not needed to make a well-built console. Those you listed are extras. We never got VC straight out of the gate on any of the other consoles. It was always a year or two in.
Message your friends on a device that is easier to message on. Voice chat as well.
Also, it's 100% on Netflix for making an app for it. Not Nintendo's fault. Apparently, they didn't want to make one according to an article a few months back. Hulu made one just fine.
But really then go, if you are so inclined. They are making incredible games for the system and yes some are ports but they are ports of games MANY people did not get to play since they didn't own a Wii U.
Also, you are complaining about ports when that is pretty much what VC is...
You did not explain why can't you trust Nintendo anymore. Because third parties are porting their games? Because Nintendo is not giving you all the little features here and there that you want? Did they ever once mention giving you those features?
Granted the invite system is a few months late, along with Nintendo Online.
@Heavyarms55 With Every PS4 update, We only mainly "complain" about not having the ability to change our names lol.
I put complain in quotes cause its really just an ongoing meme/joke at this point lol.
At least with Nintendo, I can change my name a thousand times a day if I wanted to.
Glad I "changed" my name way back when. My original name was teh-peng00in cause my girlfriend at the time loved penguins and I let her choose the name.
About 2 months later, we broke up and thank goodness I never bought anything major on it or did anything major. Created a new account, and it been on that one ever since.
Still would like to do a different one, since at the time I made one that is my favorite game engine and a character of my favorite video game.
@Ham-n-jam This, sincerely.
I loved a lot of games on Wii U but gods when I turn the Wii U I find myself missing the snappiness of the Switch's home menu.
The contrast is just startling.
It's highly unlikely that Nintendo will implement a web browser or support for third-party peripherals. That would destroy all the stability Nintendo has worked so hard to achieve. Basically, it becomes more open-ended to hacks like a PC.
@Ham-n-jam Yep, the Switch will be just like this and a lot more I believe. The 3DS was MUCH more bare bones that the Switch was at launch.
People are always so impatient with features that will be added later and are not needed to make the console work well.
Here hoping and wishing that one day we can customize our main screen if not theme shop like some one mentioned above would be nice. And also streetpass MiiPlaza would be nice too.
Another equine update, I see....
@LN3000
At least Swapdoodle works. I just wish some of my 3DS friends would actually use it.
We may not have traditional voice chat, but is there a single console that can boast Nintendo's stability?
I have noticed occasional oddness when playing Splatoon 2 recently, though it could have just been some weirdness when using the Brush. Guess I'll hop in and see if anything changed.
@bignrules please keep Allah and religion out of this friendly forum, thanks
@Heavyarms55 PS4 already has a wealth of features, like folders, cloud saves, streaming apps, and a web browser, so I doubt the PS4 players really have anything to complain about when an update hardly brings any noticeable changes. Switch players actually have a reason to complain, since these are features that that have been on the PS4 and presumably XBONE for a while now (I never really do anything on my wife's XBONE, so I'm not sure what it does). I do agree that a small update like this shouldn't be met with a thousand complaints every time it happens. Folders happened on 3DS and Wii U eventually, I'm sure they'll happen on Switch as well.
@Anti-Matter dude you're weird and you're confusing every kid and grown up, keep your private preferences private please we all know you like manly men and girly DS games and you can't stand mature stuff, at least be private and mature, my kids are in this forum as well and i hate that they give me those weird questions about your peculiar comments. Nice mii though
@TidusUK Shut up. No one forced you to have kids.
@TidusUK
Psst...
I'm Quirky and Weird just like on Miitopia / Tomodachi Life.
Why so serious ?
Nintendo likes to show their Quirkiness also, it was so Natural.
@TidusUK Tomodachi Life is rated 3, or E for everyone. You kinda asked for it
@gatorboi352 LOL, your pessimism toward Nintendo would also be great for 2011.
Yeah, I get it, we all want features on Switch and Nintendo isn't providing them, but sheesh, we're talking Switch, not WiiU, it's not like there's a lack of the content we actually bought it for.....far more than most of our wallets can justifiably afford
I'll join your mockery if cloud saves doesn't arrive with the paid online, though...that would just be sad It shouldn't NEED paid online for it....but that's Sony's shtick too, so, I can accept it.
@Anti-Matter lmfao good luck with that dream
That's it. No longer coming here for system update info. This is only the second time I've been here for a system update, and I'm already done.
It's such a [removed] move to get peoples hopes up just to make a [removed] stability feature joke.
@NEStalgia Yea but Nintendo's paid online is only supposed to be 20 a year. That's chump change frankly. Nothing to complain about.
@HugoStiglitz_420 Mind your language!
Hey Nintendo! I got, like, over 100 games on my Switch by now (mostly thanks to the ACA offerings) and I could REALLY use some folders to help me organize all of this!
Right now trying to select a game is like sorting through a sea of disorganization.
@HugoStiglitz_420 Agreed, but backing up save data is something that really should be a core feature on every platform, and is a core feature on every platform (including Nintendo platforms) except for Switch. 3DS, WiiU, Wii, PS3/4, XBox360/1 all let you back up your saves locally. XBox allows local + cloud for free. PS4 allows local and charges for cloud. PS3/4 allows local and charges for cloud. So I'll agree with the complainers on the lack of backups....it's pretty bad when even 3DS supports it and Switch doesn't!
Seems faster
@TidusUK oh sorry mister policeman I forgot Christians we’re all game not the other religions 😉
@HugoStiglitz_420 is it really you lieutenant hugo stiglitz?!?!
Safari seems snapier......oppps wrong fourm
@KayFiOS It is one thing to want certain features considered industry standards. I want them too and do think we will get them. However every time there is a minor background update like this, fixing some bug or patching a security issue, people freak out and we get thousands and thousands of complaints. It's frankly ridiculous. It feels like at least once a week I turn on the PS4 to update from version 5.03 to version 5.07 and next week it becomes 5.13.... And half the time the update crashes the system and forces me to manually reboot it.
@Steven_the_2nd it IS odd that you cannot change them.
Since when do Joycon have the ability to update wirelessly? The previous joycon update required me to connect each pair of Joycon to the switch to update, or maybe I'm just crazy.
Guys, my switch can balance on a toothpick. I'd say it's pretty stable.
Now I need to get it to balance on an atom.
@TheGeez2189 - That's two controller updates you've missed out on so far by staying on 5.0.
@TidusUK I can't believe he hasn't gotten banned yet. I blocked him a long time ago....got that pedo-bear vibe from his colorful comments.
Honestly, I'm beginning to think all the features we've been clamoring for won't be available until they roll out their online service, at the earliest. At this point, I would be genuinely surprised if they added anything like a web browser or streaming apps before then.
It's about attack surface. A web browser has a massive attack surface. If the switch had a browser it'd be open to attack from any website in the world. With a browser you could set up a little server inside your DMZ and hack the switch from home. Without one you need to compromise one of Nintendo's domains, or facebook or twitter. (OK, you could poison your DNS server to route Nintendo ips through a proxy or something, but you get my drift...)
I have many ways to access the internet, I don't need a browser on Switch. I want Nintendo to protect their IP and continue to make money. And the best games in the world, imo.
Themes would've nice, eshop mooosik, main menu mooosik from the art of the game you have in???
@RedMageLanakyn
I can see you.
Don't get bored with my presence here.
Not every gamers are same.
You are so lucky to have a very different user like me.
Btw, i still Open your presence.
The ability to create folders would be nice.
Folders, themes and lots more avatars (I’ll pay for a Mike Jones Ear Banana one! Or a James Macleod so I can be a fox in space wearing shades! Or a Nabbit! He needs more love! Or... a VIRTUAL BOY!) These all would make me feel much more stable inside, as the Switch is only an extension of my existential being. I’ll tell you hwat, some Netflix would be nice before the next batch of CastleVania episodes. And some CastleVania to play too. Hamster needs to put Haunted Castle on my Switch. The system will always be unstable as long as evil rules the night and there is no soul to save it.
@Nincompoop Gosh, that makes a lot of sense. Good on Nintendo to plan according to Labo's release. I mean, these children and children at heart need good motion stability, eh?
@Enigminator I would have an easy way to store my boatload of demos.
@Wichtel NO!
My Switch is so stable that it now has a wife, kids, and a house of its own, all paid off and no debts.
This firmware update DOES more than you think! I can now use my Mayflash F500 arcade fight stick in handheld/table top mode. Alls you need is a USB dongle and you're good to go.. docking not needed anymore.
@Heavyarms55 The whole issue came from that fact that they for some reason created a users account to be 100% tied to their PSN name instead of a backend user id.
Like all my purchases are linked to that PSN name instead of me being user#123456789, with my PSN name being a part of that. So in order for them to fix it, they would have to essentially redo how the database works.
If they had to change a username for any reason, everything besides their purchase list will be erased. Sony can move your purchase list over but it is strictly on a case by case basis.
So trophies, friends, community posts, activity log, cloud saves, everything but the purchase list will be gone.
Well it's great but when is youtube and netflix coming?
@Steven_the_2nd That is surprisingly backward for Sony. Seems to me the fix is pretty straight forward though. Simply assign every user a background ID like that that is your "real" ID as far as Sony is concerned. I mean, yeah there are millions of accounts but the could make an algorithm that hands the busy work.
Twitch.
a discrace the switch does not have it yet
@Heavyarms55 Yeah, that's what I thought they should do that as well but probably a lot more into it than just what I said. But that is the main issue.
