It's time for another Nintendo Download Update in Europe, and there are varied options to contemplate. The Switch has two retail titles and also some terrific download-only options. The 3DS stand-outs are a couple of Pokémon classics, while the Wii U doesn't completely miss out; we also have discounts and DLC to consider. Let's get to the details.
Switch Retail Downloads
Pokkén Tournament DX (Nintendo, €59.99 / £49.99) - The second 'DX' title to make the transition from Wii U to Nintendo Switch, this Pokémon fighter includes five new playable characters (four from the arcade, one new), more assist Pokémon and some new modes / online options. All told it's an expanded version of a title that was already pretty good in its original guise - we gave it a strong recommendation in our Pokkén Tournament DX review. Available from 22nd September.
Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 (Bandai Namco, €59.99 / £54.99) - It's finally arrived on the Switch in the West, a title that boasts of some unique features on Nintendo's system. In addition to online options it offers local play for 3 vs 3 battles and co-op raid boss battles for six players; it also throws in some motion controls using the Joy-Con, if that's your sort of thing. We enjoyed it in our Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 review. Available from 22nd September.
Switch eShop
SteamWorld Dig 2 (Image & Form, €19.99 / £14.99) - The long awaited sequel arrives and makes its mark on the Switch, with its unique blend of digging, exploration, platforming and combat. This expands and improves upon the 2013 original and keeps the SteamWorld series up to temperature; we loved this in our SteamWorld Dig 2 review.
Thimbleweed Park (Terrible Toybox, €19.99 / £14.99) - Produced by Ron Gilbert and Gary Winnick, this is a game that will remind point-and-click veterans of the SCUMM / LucasArts days of PC gaming; that means retro visuals, cutting humour and satire, and puzzles sure to leave you scratching your head. We had a great time solving its mysteries in our Thimbleweed Park review.
Art of Fighting (HAMSTER, €6.99 / £6.29) - Yep, a Neo Geo fighting game, this one had impressive - for the time - touches like camera zooms and characters getting increasingly bloodied during battle. Unfortunately we weren't at all impressed when we reviewed this on the Wii back in 2007, but will give it another look.

Lots of options for you this week - let us know what you'll be downloading in the poll and comments below.

Bandai Namco have some gaul charging for the DLC in Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2. It's a late port and it should have been included in the game. It's the equivalent of if Nintendo had decided to charge for the DLC packs in MK8D separately. It's bad enough that they're selling this late port at full price.
I hope Steamworld Dig 2 sells well !
Meanwhile, European will get more Wii U stuffs there.
Is the Xenoverse DLC not available for NA? It seems NL lists more comprehensive lists for EU/UK than US at times....
Great week for Switch. I hope Thimbleweed Park doesn't get crowded out by the larger releases.
Just downloaded SteamWorld Dig 2 and pre-purchased Pokémon Silver at the start of the week. This is the first in over a year I've got anything on the eShop day one.
Pokkén retail, Pokémon G/S and Steamworld Dig 2 digital.
@ShikabaneHime13 Depends on the information we're given, Nintendo of America doesn't go through discounts and DLC the same way. I suspect the same DLC will be out in North America too.
I still don't understand why the European eShop update comes after the US one (and I dislike so much that they moved it from monday to thursday).
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I would agree but this is all DLC that has been released so far on other platforms. I'm more annoyed that at least some of this DLC isn't included since its "old stuff" at this point.
Unless of cause the western release also includes the entire first games story too, like it did in Japan. That would make me less annoyed.
I may treat myself to Detana!! TwinBee.
£54 for Xenoverse 2... Let's just say I'll be looking at the Russian e-shop price on that. Maybe Pokken too as Tesco Direct look to have broken their pre-order promise to delivery by launch day.
For a second I thought Pokemon gold/silver was coming to switch. I'd be down with that.
My copy of Pokken DX arrived today. I'm also getting Pokemon Silver, as that's the version I played as a kid because I thought Lugia was so much cooler looking than Ho-oh.
@ThomasBW84 Thanks a bunch
Also, am I the only one who thinks it's a little dumb that Nintendo and Bandai Namco thought it was a good idea to release both Pokken AND DBX2 on Switch on the same day?
With a bit of time between them, I'd have likely picked up both, but now I'm probably just gonna stick with Pokken for my fighting game needs until we finally get Smash on Switch.
I might get Pokemon Silver VC eventually, but it's low down on my priorities list.
Oh no. Pokken, Dragon Ball and both Nindies for me.
My bank manager will be calling soon....
Still waiting for Golf Story
@Spike6958 indeed. Even a single week apart would have been good.
Pretty good week to be fair!
Good to see some Switch games getting discounts, but they're very small. Might pick up World of Goo... eugh. I need a loan to grab all the games I want.
Already got Pokken at a local mall today and just played a few matches. I may be a complete fighting game noob (inspire what my profile icon might suggest, I just love that Black Manta outro) who just presses buttons but it's fun, which it wasn't somehow back on WiiU.
Also downloaded SteamWorld Dig 2. Got the first one during a Steam Sale but have yet to buy. It's quite fun and reminds me of exploring caves back when I started playing Minecraft. You know, the sense of wonder and adventure. I somewhat feel an urge of completing it.
Oh, and the boxed versions of Gold and Silver are on their way. Usually, I'd hope the mailman ain't late as he always is but I have zero desire to actually play them so shrugs
I might go for Thimbleweed Park. It's kind of a stretch since Danganronpa V3 is coming out next week and I want to play that too, so I'm not sure.
Not to mention I'm still playing Breath of the Wild.
Which retailers delivered Pokken early? I don't think I will use Tesco Direct again... They are estimating Tuesday for their "launch day delivery"
@riChchestM Shopto.net got mine here for today. Free delivery also.
Got all excited thinking Pokemon Gold was our today, but it’s not playable until tomorrow 😞
Got SteamWorld Dig 2 first thing this morning, but am really torn by Pokken. First, I've already got USFII and Waku Waku 7, and barely find time to play them. Second, I feel I would play it more if I bought it digital, as I really regret getting the physical version of USFII, but it's so much cheaper on cartridge via Amazon and supermarkets.
I don't understand why they did not release Pokemon Crystal as well? Would have picked that up in a heart beat. Not really interested in Silver/Gold again.
I got Gold and Silver from a local shop for 9 euro each in a box, but indeed compared to japan we only have a box and code...
(did redeem it but offcourse can't download it yet)
Steamworld dig 2 for me!
I'll be getting Pokken Tournament DX and Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 with the DLC. Since I've never played it before I'm more than happy to pay the extra cash for more content (also, I'm a hopeless Dragon Ball fan).
I was planning to get Xenoverse 2 on Switch, but decided to get it on ps4 instead, after news got out that the Switch version lacked the dlc. It was €40,- on sale including all dlc on ps4. I guess I would've still payed full price to have the game on Switch, but only if the dlc was actually included.
Tempted by Art of Fighting just to see if I can rekindle my long lapsed affection for arcade 1 on 1 fighters. Although we're already spoilt for choice on the Switch what with entries in the Fatal Fury, King of Fighters and Samurai Showdown franchises already available. So slightly overwhelmed at where to start.
Would have pulled the trigger on Puyo Puyo Tetris if they would have at least slashed a tenner of the, to my eyes, inflated original asking price.
Thimbleweed Park certainly piques my interest but wary to pick up too much day 1 as I'm likely to struggle to find the time to play it immediately. So much content already on my Switch.
Any news on when that 2D side-scrolling beat 'em up which is set in historic Britain is due to come out? The recent Nindies Showcase said September 2017? I forget what it is called now but it looked like it might scratch that arcade beat 'em up itch more successfully than the much maligned Double Dragon 4 (why is that game nearly £9 for us and like 4/5 dollars in the U.S. Store?)
Can't find the new 3ds theme on my Nintendo. If it's the same one as the Gamestop bonus with the Johto gym leaders, then I definitely want it.
Edit: I didn't realize this was Europe and not North America
@Sinister Probably, because it's kinda like the definitive version and barely anyone would buy Gold/ Silver when Crystal is available. If they sell it at a later date they count on many people double-dipping and overall higher sales as a result.
Golf Story next week then...
SO honest question. Are we outta Neo Geo games then? There...there hasn't been an announcement of the next wave. Now, I love Nintendo as much as the next person here, but I hope Mario isn't getting in the way of Pulstar, Windjammers and Last Blade 2!
Thimbleweed and Dig 2 join my "waiting for a discount" list.
@GrailUK http://nintendoeverything.com/hamster-reveals-next-wave-of-neogeo-games-for-switch/
Well. DB Xenoverse looks neat and I'm interested in that, but that DLC, yikes. It's like a full-priced new game. :/ Any info on what the DLC actually contains and if it's worth it? I'm too lazy to go look it up.
@cmk8 I love you! xx Blimey Robo Army!
Might finally get Cube Life on my Wii U!
@cmk8 Thank you. Been eagerly awaiting the next announcement of forthcoming Neo-Geo games. Wonderful to be able to access this unique and ludicrously expensive machine's library of games for £6 and change both the big screen and on the go. An under the radar 'killer app' for the Switch in my book.
Art of Fighting would just kill off whatever remaining interest you have in 1 on 1 fighters. Go with King of Fighters '96 onwards. They're all good.
This is a great week for games. Pokken, Thimbleweed Park and Pokemon Gold/Silver will be mine.
Xenoverse 2 at full price without any DLC on board is a deal breaker for me. Not going to double dip at this price.
@riChchestM ShopTo is the best if you want releases early.
If a game releases on a Friday, I always get it the Thursday. If it releases on a Tuesday, I usually get it Saturday, but if not at least Monday.
Hell back when it released, I actually got my Wii U from them a day early.
One way or another (possibly because I called Tesco yesterday) I did actually get my copy today. Great game. Nia still needs to shut up. The Shadow Mewtwo amiibo card from the WiiU version doesn't do anything special. It is battery hungry. Opening movie, set options, shut up Nia, daily challenge with 2 battles: 10% battery gone.
Time to walk down memory road again.
I'd love to get World of Goo and Little Inferno, but they are still showing at their original price of £8.99 each. Can anyone see them at the sale price, is it just me?
@Bass_X0 Thanks the KoF tip. Am I accurate in thinking '98 is the deemed 'best' version. Does that still apply for beginners with that franchise? By the way, excuse the tardy response. I hadn't realised you'd replied to my earlier comment. Is there a way to have a notification for such instances? Does Nintendo Life website support such things?
@Joshua179 Thanks for responding. It's very odd. Glad I'm not the only one, but still... odd.
@Lroy '98 is the best one, yeah. But the others have their charm too.
@DizziParadise Same problem here too, even when I use the link in the news article about the games being on sale! Other sales (e.g. Puyo Puyo Tetris) are showing up just fine.
@Bass_X0 Cool, I'll pick up the ACA KOF '98 then for Switch and leave Art of Fighting for another time then. Thanks again.
