1-2-Switch is all about looking at your opponent rather than the screen, and is therefore built around audio and force-feedback rather than visual cues. For James Rath, this presented an interesting situation, because Rath is registered as legally blind.
Rath took the opportunity to play the game with Blind Film Critic's Tommy Edison and came away incredibly impressed with how accessible and inclusive an experience it offered:
I'm a legally blind gamer and recently purchased the Switch along with 1-2 Switch. I also got together with a friend of mine who's been totally blind since birth and it was the first time he was able to experience a mainstream Nintendo game, 1-2 Switch. I made a video of the experience and wanted to share it since I'm a big advocate for accessibility in gaming. I'm not sure if making the gameplay accessible to the Blind was intentional for Nintendo or not but they managed to pull it off and it was a lot of fun.
When you have perfect eyesight it's easy to take for granted that others out there aren't quite as fortunate, and while we're not sure Nintendo intended to make 1-2-Switch the perfect experience for those with visual impairments, it's heartwarming to see that the game can be enjoyed by blind and partially-sighted players.

How. Freaking. Amazing.
Funny because on launch me and my brother was playing this game and we came to the same conclusion that finally theres a game you can play blind.
Great to find this article following that.
That's one awesome reason for 1-2 Switch's existence.
I have to admit, I've been hating on this game quite a bit, but this is really cool.
I don't care who you are...this is just straight up cool.
So awesome someone who ordinarily couldn't experience games got to experience the Nintendo magic.
Now that's cool.
While still not worth the $50 tag to me, this game is actually quite fun. I'm happy my lil brother picked it up for his.
I read this story a couple of days ago about a woman and her blind husband enjoying 1, 2 Switch and thought it was great.
https://www.reddit.com/r/NintendoSwitch/comments/5xi2k1/me_and_my_blind_husband_played_12_switch_for_two/
I think the game is crud myself but can appreciate for some people they'll get far more enjoyment out of it than I ever will. It's nice that people can join in on video games like this.
It's not even a possibility any of us here has thought about while questioning this "tech demo".
From local one-screen multiplayer on the go to a video game blind people can experience and enjoy. "Inventing new ways to play" is really no exaggeration when it comes to Nintendo.
@nhSnork it really isn't an exaggeration! Well said.
I've never considered this option before. Its nice that everyone can enjoy Nintendo's games!
Great to hear.
Huh....lol
Still not getting the game, but coolz. xD
I gave in and bought 1-2-Switch on day one because my retailer gave it to me for half price. Now this is something to feeld good about
I've been preaching this to jaded gamers since 1-2Switch was revealed. Even though it is easy for a typical gamer to dismiss, it's not without virtue nor purpose. Somewhat reminiscent of what Wii Sports did for gamers with one capable arm. Would be great to see more games utilize HD rumble to its fullest and hopefully that could help facilitate more accessiblilty on this sort of level.
This has blown me away!
Inclusive gaming!
My kids and I have had a blast with 1, 2 Switch. To listen/watch them, you would have thought "Telephone" was the funniest video game ever produced. They really enjoy Wizards, Samurai Training, Quick Draw, Fake Draw, and, also unbelievably, Milk. So yeah, not for many here, but there appears to be audiences for it.
This is pretty cool.
@subpopz I don't know. I thought the comment by @SLIGEACH_EIRE was pretty positive. He said it was pretty cool and "It's nice that people can join in on video games like this".
Pretty Ironic that a blind person can see the joy of the game where others with sight can't.
And you just sold me the game.
I really want this game but I can't justify paying full price for the game, mainly because it lacks a single player experience and it would only be used a few times a year when family and friends visit although the wife would probably enjoy the game until the novelty wore off. I'm not bothered by the decision to not include the game in a bundle but it would have been nice if we had the option to get the game on day one for half the price. Nintendo should have given us a day one option or promo of some sort that included the game. I'm still baffled that Nintendo didn't offer a botw collectors edition themed switch or joycons. I'd like to see 12 switch receive a price drop but we all know that won't happen unless sales were horrible, which is doubtful. Oh well. My backlog is approaching defcon 5 at the moment And it seems like Sony is finally delivering on the next gen promise this year not to mention arms, mk deluxe and splatoon 2 are coming in the next few months Too many high quality games are being released on the PS4 at the moment, which is why I m not bothered by a handful of Nintendo exclusives a year. Some see Nintendos small amount of releases every year as a negative but it allows us plenty of time to experience our games without rushing out to buy the flavor of the week if that makes sense.
this is legit amazing. that guy's videos are something else.
@subpopz Cop on. I said the game is crap in my view but it's great that blind people can enjoy video games too.
Well colour me impressed. Way to go Nintendo.
@gamermole "...that finally theres a game you can play blind."
Just want to point out there's been experiments and attempts at making games for the visually impaired. I wrote an answer to a related question over here with regards to that listing the games I know in this rather small genre. Spoilers: I edited it to include 1-2 Switch.

Impressive !
Blind playing and still can enjoy the game.
1 2 Switch is definetely a game that can delight blind peoples.
And that guy's whole channel is full of entertaining and informative videos dealing with the visually impaired.
@subpopz You're a liar.

<Insert troll-y negative comment here, because I can't think of anything to type.>
Jk, this is great to hear. I only wish it somehow had a single-player mode… For me, it's pretty much unplayable without that. …Sigh…
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Trust me dude, @subpopz is not a liar.
This is one of the things that made me smile today.
This is just a good thing.
I can already see Nintendo's haters saying something along the lines of "Because you have to be blind to choose the Switch over an Xbox One or a PlayStation 4".
I'm also ready for those comments.
Yeah, this was great to see.
@AlexSora89
You and your frickin' GIFs! XD
@ProjectCafe
What else did you expect from me? The Spanish Inquisition?
Aww, that is so nice!
@AlexSora89
Yes, actually. I was disappointed to see a 10 year old cocking a rifle, instead of the Spanish Inquisition. I was expecting them, general. You failed to present them the first time, shame on you!
We were going to make plans to take over Spanishia!
@subpopz @NickOfTime90 @SLIGEACH_EIRE
Let's all calm down, please.
This never cross my mind. It is amazing and possibly a new thing this inclusive gaming stuff which would be really good.
Wow! I never even thought of this but what a great feature! (Albeit an accidental one.) I might just have to pick this up before the next family get-together. Still don't like the price though, so we'll see.
beyond cool. im speechless
@ProjectCafe
I'm sorry. Have a wafer-thin mint as my apology.
@Dakt It reminds me of the video from a few years back of the visually impaired girl who could play Super Luigi because they included Nabbit as playable assistance. She was utterly ecstatic.
@AlexSora89
smacks mint out of hand
Do you know what you've done, man?!
The Spanish Inquisition and I were going to overthrow the Spanishian government! We were going to plan to manufacture free tacos and guacamole to tired countries all over the globe! It would have been exhilaratingly craptastic!
We would have evacuated all of the bad hombres from Spanishian waters and territory! We could have wiped Ebola from the face of the planet, the Inquisition and I!
Instead a pissed off Kevin was more important, and as a result, the Spanish Inquisition meeting was delayed, and our chance for global domination was lost! WE COULD HAVE MADE SO MANY PIZZAS TO ALL THE POOR MEXICANS! AND ALL OF THE RADIOACTIVE TOMATOES HAVE BEEN LOST! NOW, NONE OF US CAN FIGURE OUT IF WE'RE KIDS OR SQUIDS, OR SQUIDS OR KIDS! SO, NOW WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE!
Wow, that's really great! Maybe inthe future there could be more games with HD rumble that are accessible for blind people as well.
That would be really cool.
I will get this game when it's abit cheaper like £20 lol... But wow that's fantastic news, it makes me happy to see this
See, I didn't even think of blindness (funny since I myself am very poorly sighted) but I bought 1-2 Switch because I knew it was a game that many of the games on offer my very arthritic father could enjoy with me. He has been pretty impressed with it and he never plays games.
The fact this works is really cool, means the oldies could get involved and play no matter their eyesight. Glad that this game is more accessible to people than the typical gamer.
@ProjectCafe
You're off your meds, you know that, don't you?
@AlexSora89
It was supposed to be funny.
There's no need to degrade me when I'm being funny.
This is a great story, even if by accident I hope more game companies create games that could be played by someone who is blind
@ProjectCafe
I know, mine was an... an "I got nothing" kind of lame rebuttal.
@AlexSora89
You know what my lame rebuttal is?
This:
.
@ProjectCafe
"That dot is the root of the entire universe."
So much for a lame rebuttal!
@AlexSora89
Awuh?
@ProjectCafe
If you haven't seen the "Reincarnation" episode of Futurama, do so. Now.
@AlexSora89
I have.
That's a good series.
@ProjectCafe
Then look at that "." rebuttal of yours and you'll get the joke.
@AlexSora89
That period's only there to give the comment a good space, and I saw the episode, so I already got the joke.
The point that flew right over your head, was that my rebuttal was nothing. There was no rebuttal.
Why the hell does everyone have to be a smart@$$ these days, and come up with snarky last says?!
@ProjectCafe
"Wow. Sarcasm. That's original."
(Dr. Horrible)
@AlexSora89
Is there a reason why you keep liking all of my comments?
@ProjectCafe
Who knows.
