Data miners have uncovered what appears to be an unused "buddy" system in Pokémon Sun and Moon.
This feature - which shows a Pokémon walking alongside you in the game - was showcased in previous titles but is absent from the most recent instalment, presumably to keep the game running at an acceptable pace on older 3DS consoles.
The mined data shows animations for various monsters, and a lot of effort has been put in - each type moves as you'd expect, with bird-types flying and Magikarp comically flopping along the floor.

Could these animations be reinstated in the rumoured Nintendo Switch version of the game? Time will tell, but until then, let us know what you think of this discovery by posting a comment below.

I'm still overwhelmed by the idea that we would get a core Pokemon game on a console. I say it is a good guess for the future
HOLY SMOKERS WOWIE ZOWIE! At first I was like "u cannt b srs" but then I remembered the Switch and was like "YEAAYUH!"
Definitely would love to have such feature back, it's not a key mechanic, but it's hard to not love it XD
And at this point I hope the rumour of the star version is true even for the sake of the animators, else those datas are the proof that they worked for months over nothing >.>;;; ( It happens in the development of a game, but these huge cuts are always such a shame!).
'bird-types'.
I'm still surprised this feature never came back after HeartGold and SoulSilver. I hope they will do it again some day as it was a mostly useless yet fun feature. I'm all for it, especially if it has added benefits such as items being collected (like candies in Pokémon GO) or Pokémon growing more friendly if you let them walk with you.
This was a great feature in HGSS, and really helped to make the games feel more personal. Hopefully it'll return some day.
@Rensch Probably the reason it didn't was because all the Pokemon were made to scale with this game along with everything else. So either they scrapped it due to processing problems, or it was being implemented last minute, but they ran out of development time.
Everyone's just jumping to conclusions about this... there are other features that are present in Sun and Moon that use similar models, which may well have been what these animations were originally intended for... Pokemon Refresh and PokeViewer, for example.
What a bummer. This was easily one of the best features of HGSS. It's a shame it never came back
Welp, time to go replay HG. It saddens me that they didn't add this system to the final game. Still the Switch version might happen which would be cool.
What would have been amazing would have been - one version exclusive to New 3DS and the other for 2DS and older versions.
Ah dang! I was so sure this system would be in the game when I saw how many Pokemon had overworld models in the demo, alas when the game came out the feature was nowhere to be seen. At least I was partially right, it does look like the feature was intended to be there.
Hoping the switch version has it, as useless as it is it's probably my favourite "mechanic" from any Pokemon game ever (part of the reason HGSS are still my favs.)
Feature worth considering Switch version purchase.
Griind.... as they reach the technical limitations of the good old trusty original 3DS which struggles with this PKMN game at times as it is.
@MegaVel91 That much I understand, but they could've easily done it at least for generation five, which used a more traditional graphic style.
@InfernapeKing97 But of course! MissingNo is bird type
Pokemon Stars will have it back alongside with Kanto, Johto and Kalos, you heard here first. And the remake of Sinoh will include Hoen and Unova. Bookmark this page and come back november '17
@InfernapeKing97 Missingno. Duh.
Darn, it would have been nice to see a feature like this come back; it's not integral to gameplay, but it was one of my favorite things in HGSS! Maybe the rumored Pokemon Stars will have the feature working?
This was one of my favourite features from HG/SS. It gave the game a little more of a personal touch.
That said, it might have had something to do with hardware limitations. The original 3DS struggles with these games enough as it is.
@DragonEleven It specifically says code for a buddy system. How is that jumping to conclusions?
@UmbreonsPapa I think he meant that Nintendo Life is also jumping to conclusions. Which they are. Nothing is confirmed.
@ninty-love Fair enough. Though its perfectly reasonable to assume the feature was discarded so the game could run on older 3DS models considering what we know of the situation so far (although yes, its speculation until someone from Game Freak says so). And Nintendo Life does quantify the Stars speculation with the word "rumored". So they aren't making statements as if they are fact.
Maybe 2017 is the year of being followed by your pokemon.
@UmbreonsPapa I agree with you that this is likely a feature abandoned due to space/processing restrictions on the 3DS. However I am reasonably confident we'll see something similar on the Switch Pokémon game. Which may or may not be the rumoured Stars.
If the rumour IS true, then it would make sense for a potential Stars to keep a feature removed from Sun/Moon. They were worked on in parallel for a long time & were probably designed to share a large chunk of code.
Would've loved that feature. Well, I still have HeartGold at least.

It's not too surprising there was originally a follower system in the game because people in the game often talk about you and your "partner" and refer to the Pokemon in the first slot by name as your "partner".
Hopefully it will be implemented in the rumored 1.5 version Pokemon Stars.
come on... bird type?
was missingno a buddy?
@Rensch Well, this was featured in Amity Square in a limited form so maybe they will expand on it in the yet-to-be-announced Diamond/Pearl remakes.
Can someone elaborate on why people have assumed this means a buddy system? Was there more than just the movement models? Unless there's more data that points to buddies, it seems that it could just be leftovers from the camera minigame, for example.
