Another week begins, and depending on where you are it's the start of Spring with blue skies, chirping birds and the emergence of unholy insects back into our lives. The Nintendo Download has a sense of freshness to it with a major retail arrival on 3DS, some more SNES 3DS goodness on the New portable and more intriguing options across the handheld and Wii U. Let's get to it.
Wii U eShop
Infinity Runner (Wales Interactive, €6.49/ £5.89) - This is a first-person runner title set on a large spaceship that's descended into a nightmare, and you try to escape by running quickly and occasionally turning into a werewolf - with 14 levels it could be rather fun. Our review will be with you this week.
Shantae: Risky's Revenge Director's Cut (WayForward, €9.99/ £6.99) - A re-release of the popular DSiWare title, this aims to recreate the original in HD with some helpful new additions like a warp system for getting around the sizeable map. It'll also look rather shiny in HD; we'll get whipped into shape for a review.
Wii U Virtual Console
Star Fox 64 (Nintendo, €4.99 / £4.49 until 21st April, then €9.99/ £8.99) - A classic of the Nintendo 64 era and, arguably, the definitive entry in this franchise. It's providing plenty of inspiration - it seems - for the upcoming Star Fox Zero on Wii U, and now lands on the Virtual Console as a warm-up for the new launch.
Wii U eShop Temporary Discounts
Ascent of Kings (Nostatic Software, €1.49 / £1.11 until 31st March, normally €1.99 / £1.49)

New Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console
Donkey Kong Country (Nintendo, €7.99/ £7.19, or €3.99/ £3.59 for users who've downloaded Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest on New 3DS using the same NNID) — One of the all-time classic platformers, this title from Rare made stars of DK, Diddy Kong and Cranky Kong, while using graphical technology that was mind-blowing in the 16-bit era. We argue that it's barely aged a day, as a gaming experience, in our Wii U VC Donkey Kong Country review.
Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest (Nintendo, €7.99/ £7.19, or €3.99/ £3.59 for users who've downloaded Donkey Kong Country on New 3DS using the same NNID) — The second home console DK entry from Rare, this one puts you in charge of Diddy Kong as you seek to rescue the captured DK; it provides more of the attractive visuals and gameplay that made the first title so hugely popular. We couldn't say enough positive things about this in our Wii U VC Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest review.
3DS Retail Download
Hyrule Warriors Legends (Nintendo, €39.99/ £34.99) - A game that caused quite a stir when it originally arrived on Wii U, Koei Tecmo has now brought its Warriors / Legend of Zelda mash-up to the portable with extra characters and a new Linkle storyline included; naturally there'll also be a lot of DLC. Our review will be with you later today. Free 3DS HOME Theme with eShop purchases.
3DS / Wii U Retail DLC
Hyrule Warriors: Legends: Legends of Hyrule Pack: 3DS only (Nintendo, €14.99/ £13.49) - Get four AOC packs as they are released, and a costume for Ganondorf to enjoy now! (Nintendo 3DS only.) DKC's for me! Love the NN3DS emulations and thankfully hadn't bought most of these before (or if I did I did at very cheap prices).
Hyrule Warriors but physical.
I was going to download SF64 because of the discount but realised I've already got it on the Wii so will already have a bigger discount anyway.
Nothing for me this week. I once wanted Legends but learning the subpar performance on 3DS and how the Wii U version get screwed with just new characters and weapons without any other content I'll pass.
Next game I´ll propably buy from the eShop is going to the new Shantae. That is if it arrives before Yooka-Laylee.
Nothing for me this week.
can NA have this Plz, Nintendo?
Only 5 euro for Starfox? Without any conditions? I am not a fan of the game and I own the original, but in that case...
Absolutely nothing! Although, those Rising Star Discounts are pretty good.
May pick up Shantae; got it on my 3DS but I prefer playing these on the big screen if I can; also don't like the position of the 3DS d-pad.
No "Paranautical Activity" this week ? As it wasn't there last time.
Star Fox 64, DKC & DKC2 and Hyrul Warriors Legends (the physical collectors edition) along with its 3DS/Wii U season pass for me this week.
Star fox 64 and not lylat wars!!
Will it be the ntsc version??
@ThomasBW84 Any idea if Starfox is the 60 HZ version or the optimised 50 HZ we got on Wii? I shouldn't really need to ask this in 2016 but you know.
Finally DKC done properly for handheld! I no longer have to put up with the inferior GBA ports on my GBA SP! Hopefully the third will follow...
Just the Hyrule Warriors Legends 3DS/Wii U DLC for me, getting the game physically. Going to wait on buying any games digitally until My Nintendo launches.
@OorWullie The press release doesn't specify, but I'll ask Nintendo.
@ThomasBW84 Cheers.If it's not,can you ask them why? haha
I'm sure it will be,releasing a game called Lylat Wars doesn't really help promote Starfox Zero to those who don't know.
Star Fox 64 for me. Not played any of the titles in this series, so looking forward to trying this out ahead of Zero next month.
@OorWullie Considering they call it Star Fox 64 instead of LylatWars, it's probably the USA-version of the game. That version does not have Lylat-voicetrack, though.
@Mooey: I think it announced for japan but no release date.It is amazing they did not do all three in one day like the NA Wii u vc releases.
The SNES-style speech sounds were a fun extra for Lylat Wars, but the 60hz of Star Fox 64 is more important (oh, and 'rumble' too, of course!), and I can always go back to the European version in Wii mode if I want anyway.
Personally, going forward I think the English language title for any remake or HD versions should be Star Fox: Lylat Wars.
AND if Nintendo makes a ton of money off its mobile games I hope they use some of it to buy up whatever rights they need to bring back the original Star Fox (aka Starwing).
@OorWullie I hope, it will be the 60Hz version but it is written out in the Eshop, usually. At the end of the description section there is for Super Mario World, for example:
"This is the US version of the game"
Before buying it, I will check this sentence for Star Fox 64. Great game by the way
@Andyliini @Chandlero Fingers crossed. What makes me think it might not be is because in the past,if there is an 'optimised' 50 HZ version, that's the one we've got instead.Super Metroid was like this and there's been others that I can't think of just now.
Edit: Just had a wee look to see what other games we got that were the "optimised" version, there's quite a few actually.Donkey Kong 64,Ocarina of Time,Paper Mario,Link to the Past and Donkey Kong Country 2 to name a few.
Hopefully the clue is in the name, they've called it Starfox 64 in the press release so that's the version we'll get.
I feel like you guys should touch on how the 3ds SNES VC games look/run by adding in an extra paragraph at the end of those reviews.
DKC and DKC 2 on the NEW 3DS, Finally I can play these games on the go. So far I am quite pleased with the emulation of the SNES games on the handheld so DKC games are going to be a blast!
"Star Fox 64"...
Are we finally getting the North American 60 Hz version, and not the inferior European 50 Hz Lylat Wars?
If so, I'll be very excited!
I still have 10 euro left on my eShop account, so I was waiting until this article to see if that Wii U Hyrule Warriors season pass would drop this week. Since it doesn't, I'll find something else to spend it on, like some DLC for games I already own.
Also, if you don't have it yet, Virtue's Last Reward is a fantastic visual novel / puzzle game.
Shantae, SF64 and HW legends physical is on order for me this week.
Isn't the Shantae: Risky's Revenge Director's Cut supposed to be coming to 3DS as well?
@Mario-Man-Child if you've done a system transfer from your Wii to Wii U, you'll get it even cheaper if you upgrade to the Wii U version, the special price will automatically apply 👍
I was gonna buy DKC 1 & 2 and the Wii U + 3DS Hyrule Warriors Season Pass, but I'm about 50p or so short of funds, so maybe I'll purchase Shantae: Risky's Revenge instead of DKC 1 & 2...
The fact that it's listed as "Star Fox 64" makes me think that it IS the 60Hz release. Also, as much as people moan (and I am definitely "people"), Nintendo do tend to release the 60Hz versions these days. In fact to date there has been 240 Virtual Console releases on Wii U, of which just 14 are the 50Hz edition. Some of those 14 have been big names though.
@Other_Dave yep, dkc2, lttp, super metroid and oot! Such a shame!!!!
No downloads for me until My Nintendo rewards program kicks in.
@Mario-Man-Child
On another Wii or the Wii on your Wii U? If you transfer it to your Wii U's Wii, you'll just pay for the upgrade cost.
@ThomasBW84 should you add wait for my nintendo in the vote
I will get HWL physically.
Didn't take long for Sadame to get a discount,Anyway I'm gonna pick up Shantae and possibly one of the rising star discounts.
Might get Riskys Revenge Directors Cut, not sure if it's worth a double dip though. Will wait for a review. Won't bother with Starfox as have the 3DS version.
Probably Hyrule Warriors Legends for me. I've got a New 3DS XL, so I shouldn't encounter performance issues. However, I'm going to wait until after it's released, and I'll read the reviews and read the comparisons between the Wii U and 3DS versions. I like the Wind Waker characters, so it'll probably be the 3DS version that I'll buy.
Hey guys remember, if your buying hyrule warriors on 3ds it can only really run on new 3ds cleanly.
It's a slowdown pop up nightmare for the 3ds.
I've got just enough eShop credit to get those DK games, but I'm unsure... Never played them. It would be awesome having a Rareware game on my 3DS though!
and wasn't Sadame only release like 3 weeks ago? Already on sale?
Being that I own Star Fox 64 3D, I still hope Star Fox 64 comes to NA this week because I will buy it there. Star Fox 64 3D did a great job with the main game, but the 4 player is messed up and not the same nor as good. I want to get Star Fox 64 on Wii U so that I can have the original 4 player mode!
@wazlon don't you want it on Wii U for the multiplayer though?
I also own SF 64 3D, but I hate how they messed up the multiplayer.
Star Fox 64, Hyrule Warriors Legends (physical) and Hyrule Warriors Legends Season Pass for 3DS and Wii U.
@Other_Dave And since this is obviously to promote the new game, its obvious they want a flawless way to promote it some more.
And now its just a matter of Majora's Mask left then all the 3DS 54 remakes are on the Wii U VC....
I might get the Hyrule Legends season pass once it's available.
I had no idea until now that Star Fox 64 was called Lylat Wars in Europe.
The donkey kong country games and hyrule warriors wouldve been interesting if i had a new nintendo 3ds but alas nothing for me.
What are people's thoughts on virtues last reward?
@Angelic_Lapras_King Not in NA though, they're also still missing DKCR and Xenoblade Chronicles.
I was going to download SF64 because of the discount but realised I've already got it on the Wii so will already have a bigger discount anyway.
Its not a discount to own the game on the Wii. It's a penalty. Everyone who downloads a VC game on the Wii U for the first time is getting the game for cheaper than someone who has already downloaded it on Wii.
@Mario-Man-Child You won't actually have to pay that much as you're just upgrading. In the UK it's 99p - not sure about the price in Euros.
...As long as you've transfered it to your Wii U's hard drive that is.
Pretty great week for New 3DS.
Original 3DS gets crapped on and Infinity Runner isn't that great, but DKC 1&2, a retail game and a couple decent sales more than makes this the best week for the system this year.
Hometown Story, Hakuoki, Virtue, Bit Trip and Jett are all fun games, but give me some Dixie Kong anyday. She's a pretty likeable character and really helped speed up the platforming segments.
Those bee hive stages are RIDICULOUS. My challenge is to make it through that one particular level without dying or swearing. I swear ( ) it's impossible.
@Grumblevolcano I wa on about the N64 remakes. Those 2 are more ports then remakes.
@leo13 I have the original N64 version and still have four controllers if I want to do that but I'm an older gamer and most of my friends aren't into Nintendo games I'm afraid.
Can't wait for StarFox 64 to make its way to the North American VC!
@wazlon I can understand that. However, I have a young family so I have a bunch of people over frequently that want to play and my kids love when I join in with them and their friends so I'm really hoping it comes to NA too.
@leo13 Well for your sake I hope it does too
NoA is really lacking in the N64 games now. We are 3 titles behind Europe.
@ThomasBW84 I don't usually drop in to point out typos, but the "New 3DS Virtual Consolem" tag kinda messes up being able to loop up all articles.
@madelk Whoops, that's now fixed.
Thanks man!
May get BIT.TRIP SAGA for that price.
Saving all my money, May = Fates SE, April = maybe, June = Kirby, Mario & Sonic maybe. Zelda U whenever...my wallet needs to meditate right now
