Exactly one week ago, Nintendo dropped the latest version of the 3DS system software, granting users the opportunity to experience the most stable version of the software, yet. One would think that it would take all of the intellectual minds in Nintendo's R&D department quite a long time to devise a superior OS that's even more stable, but the miracle workers have managed to find a way to do it inside a week.
For those of you who would like to have continued access to the eShop and other online features on the 3DS, the update will be required, though it shouldn't take very long to download. And just think: when the console reboots, you will be laying your eyes on an absolutely rock solid version of the OS. It may not look or act any different, but peace of mind regarding the stability of console software is a must in this increasingly more complex world.
What do you think? Are you glad that the 3DS is even more stable? How long do you think it'll be until they put out another update? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Is this update actually safe to download? people be saying it causes SD card corruption.
@Undead_terror I downloaded it and it didn't corrupt my SD card, so you should be good to go...
@Undead_terror well that took a dark turn. i was jsut expecting stability jokes.
Stability tastes like popcorn
@Undead_terror ....You better be joking. >.>
@Undead_terror Is this actually a thing? I haven't heard of any problems like that.
I guess you can say the Stability has reached the point where everything it touches becomes too stable, thus making it unstable.
My 3ds is so stable that my horse moved back in.
I was wondering why it moved out yesterday. It left because of the instability of my 3ds because I hadn't updated.
The last update supposedly caused some SD card problems.

@Hombre_Alabama
Agreed. No SD card corruption for me either.
(I wonder if this corruption occurs on specific SD cards...?)
@ericwithcheese2 Important to note that from your linked reddit thread, it appears the update isn't corrupting any user data, and the problem can be resolved through careful, but basic, manipulation of the SD card's files through a PC.
I can confirm that the last update corrupted my SD card on my old3DS. Haven't updated to this newest build — a bit hesitant to, after last week. I had to spend an hour last time: backing it up, then moving stuff over piecemeal to isolate the problem, while not knowing if it was even going to work. Heh.
Nintendo is bend on getting rid of all the Arrr, Matey!
@Undead_terror My son had that problem and I didn't think anything of it. I had to delete his Nintendo Badge data and then it worked fine. From now on I'm not Dl'ing these things till I know it's safe for sure. Glad I've been playing a ds game as of late.
I can confirm that this update indeed does cause problems but I'm not sure how widespread it is. I'm going to check my son's and daughter's other data.
My daughter's Nintendo Badge didn't work either. I don't have that on my system so if some other people could check that it's now done it on 2 systems as far as I can see. It seems to be just that game though.
The update worked fine on my new 3ds xl. No data corruption for me although I did back it up before hand because I was worried it was going to and I updated it while the micro SD card was still out of the system.
@rudyseidl @Hombre_Alabama yours went fine. is your 3ds a new 3ds or the old one?
@Shazirah just placing your name here to confirm it corrupted on an old one.
@Spoony_Tech yours got corrupted, is yours the old one?
"To infinity Stability and beyond" XD
Well, I update my old 3DS and all right, no problem for now.
@Jamotello Both their systems are the old ones. Seems to be just Nintendo Badge as far as I can see.
@Spoony_Tech it's starting to look like it's a problem for old 3ds models only so far, and badge is the only suspect. the sample size is too small tho'.
@SakuraHaruka yours went fine on the old 3ds. do you have nintendo badge arcade on it?
@Jamotello it's a regular size new 3ds..
@Hombre_Alabama do you have nintendo badge arcade on your new 3ds?
yeah i heard about this been update real quickly, i was curious if Nintendo was alert about a homebrew thing, although when i went Go Nintendo and heard about the "SD Card Corruption" i kinda was worried about it effecting my 3ds so i went ahead and update.
odd thing is, that SD Card issue was caused on me before last week's update. but then it gets fixed on it own, so idk what the issue is with these SD Cards
@Jamotello
Yes, and yes, I have the Nintendo Badge (and Badges and my home screen), I played it minutes ago and yes, no problem.
Just in time for my birthday! This is actually the 2nd present Nintendo gave me today, the first being an email linking me to some cool wallpaper, and later today, I get to try Project X Zone 2. Keep the gifts coming!
@SakuraHaruka thanks. that might mean badge might be more affected by rather than cause of. still, this sample size is just too small.
@Jamotello @Spoony_Tech My old XL updated just fine, with 215 badges in my collection (the damned 'game' really takes an ungodly amount of time to start these days D: ) and half a dozen of the Rhythm Heaven ducks out on my Hanafuda-themed home screen, wedged in between 8 launcher badges, 3 badge-adorned folders, and 27 standard application tiles. Oh, and a DS game in the cart-slot tile, of course.
Take that as you will.

My 3DS is gyroscopicaly stable
All the data on my 2DS became corrupted with yesterday's update...:/
I had to wipe the data from my SD card and now it seems to work fine, at least for now...
No problemos for me (using New Nintendo 3DS).
@allav866 Happy Birthday, man!
@Zerodactyl @Neko_Ichigofan Thanks!
@allav866 Happy Birthday!
Do Nintendo make these announcements to fill in the quiet weeks when there's no news or announcements for new games? Maybe they think it's a way to keep people using the 3DS a bit longer. Oh, what a cynic I am!!! Mwahaha!!!
My 3DS is so stable now I can balance it on the end of a toothpick.
Hey, guys, take it easy... Nintendo is just trying hard to save Earth from certain doom!!!
3DS is getting so stable over time, that Earth is getting back to its original axis!!!
I've noticed that this firmware update necessitates that you update to sign into NNID services.
Things like launching Nintendo Badge Arcade, Miiverse and checking in on Pokémon Shuffle require 10.5.
It's not like 10.4 where you could still do these things on 10.3, although you couldn't do anything eShop or microtransaction related.
This firmware update that was released today is to resolve the possible SD card corruption issue..
They've made it a forced update to ensure that people don't spend to long on 10.4 and run the risk of corruption.
Stability always is most important!!!
So with all of these SD card corruption issues...are we looking at something previously unstable becoming unbelievably stable?
no it wasn't this has nothing to do with sd card corruption issues. Nintendo tsl cert expired this used to provide https encryption for nintendos core services like nintendo id. thats all that was updated they changed from a VeriSign cert with CyberTrust, those 'corruption' issues are likely to with a out of date cert.
So that explains the problems logging in using software that uses nintendo id services as well as nintendo badges their linked to you're nintendo id also.
its not corrupt as such the 3ds gets a bit paranoid when its data fails authentication checks. nintendo screwed up
Since the update my 3DS has been getting black screens... If I lose all my data... I'm coming for you Nintendo. I'm not joking.
My SD card doesn't appear to be corrupted, but I have an old 3ds and quite a few badges. How do I know if its been corrupted? I know there should be black screens and such, but when and where will they appear?
looks like it mostly affects old model 3ds and not new ones so far.
If only Nintendo could remember how to make perfect software like their days of old, they wouldn't have to keep updating/fixing the junk they make now!
@Jamotello yes I do and there's no problem with it..
@Jamotello
It's the 3ds XL - NOT the "new" one with an updated 32 GB SD card
It's not that stable.
I have a normal 3DS XL, no problems here ! I even accessed the badge arcade to check.
Why do idiots says "dropped" instead of "released"?
Dropped doesn't even make sense in that context.
Meh...not updating yet then. Loss of Miiverse is sad, but I'll live I guess...
True story: after installing this latest update, i accidentally dropped the console from my coffeetable. So much for more stability!
Another trivial update that serves no purpose, just like Wii U 5.1.1. Boring.
My 3DS has actually been less stable after these updates. It keeps randomly shutting off... which really sucks because it keeps resetting the daily challenge in Pokemon Picross!
I'm determined to beat that game without spending a dime! made to area 11, and gotta wait 9-11 days until I can access the next area!
..old XL and no problems (200+ games, 200+ badges)..in fact it's now soooo stable, it can do it's own taxes..
(and last year it worked a lot!)...
This is all you got nintendo? You can't stop me, no one can't stop me. Emunand gateway cfw master race muhahhahaha
if froze my 3ds!!! its stop on the don't turn off your 3ds its updating page. Any ideas what I can do. I failed to copy my sd card for a really long time and was going to do so but kept forgetting to do it. AHHHHHH!!!!
Dunno if this is a problem with the update or not but I can't access Nintendo Badge Arcade keep coming up with an error code on my 3DS XL & my new 3DS.
@Starz did you try cheating on arcade badge? I read reports that nintendo are banning cheaters who are using an infinite tries cheats. The error code is 002-0107
Is the 3ds the most stable thing in the universe yet?
@Cooroxd didn't even no there was a cheat on Nintendo Badge Arcade so nope haven't been using it. My error code starts with 006.
More stable, still no horses.
@GauBan no, that's not the reason. There's a new exploit/hack for any 3ds device with 10.3 or lower firmware that allows you to downgrade and play 'free games'. By forcing you to update, Nintendo is trying to contain this outbreak by patching and blocking the hack of as many 3ds systems below 10.3
@Sionyn wrong, Nintendo is trying to make you update to prevent you from jailbreaking and modding your 3ds since there was an exploit on 10.3 and lower firmware
@Cooroxd From what I was told by a Nintendo employee was that 10.4 was to fix the "bug" that was used in the exploit.
10.5 was released to fix the SD card corrupting issue that appeared in the 10.4 update.
@Cooroxd Having a little look the listed changed for 10.50 (From a "devolpment" point of view) also included a change to RomFS:/dummt.txt
and change of digital certificates from "VeriSign" to "CyberTrust"
10.4 on the other hand did remove the Memchunkhax2 exploit
@GauBan but you have to agree that nintendo is trying to reduce the amount of 3ds with 10.3 or lower firmware by literally forcing you to update to 10.5 in order to play online games.
@Cooroxd yes you are correct of that Nintendo will try to stop people using firmwares that are exploited by a forced update. Same for Sony and Microsoft.
But why didn't they do it with 10.4? Or could that 10.4 was a forced update but then changed to be optional once the issues with SD card started to appear. Then they brought out 10.5 and returned to the forced update..
