Super Mario Galaxy, in the opinion of this humble writer and we suspect a number of other gamers, is one of the best games ever produced; it's certainly near the top of the class in platformers, at least. Whether you regard it as Mario platforming perfection or not it does, nevertheless, have its share of glitches.
That's unsurprising considering what Nintendo achieved, which was some hugely creative level design and clever gravity mechanics. Throw in Mario's impressive move-set and there's lots of potential to play around and find glitches, some of which are pretty nifty - as always the hugely popular A+Start YouTube channel has done just that.
Check them out in the video below, and like us perhaps fantasize over a HD re-release to grace the Wii U in future - we like to dream...

Those glitches make me love the game even more. I hope Nintendo makes an HD remake of Galaxy.
HD Remake of Sunshine (best 3D Mario Platformer), pretty please.
An HD remake would be nice, but I would settle for a Wii Digital download with Classic Controls added. Sunshine remake would be good
Amazing glitches for an amazing game! I wish Nintendo would make an HD compilation of this and 2 but with the Wii download games, that no longer seems likely.
Never knew about these, fun stuff!
Just release the Wii VC!
For remasters:
Sunshine HD, Path of Radiance HD, Eternal Darkness HD
DK64 3D, Mario64 3D, Luigi's Mansion (GC) 3D!
@outburst Aren't they kinda doing that already? Sure, the Wii games aren't in HD but they're still releasing them.
Nah, forget the remake: Give us Mario Galaxy 3!
"Super Mario Galaxy, in the opinion of this humble writer and we suspect a number of other gamers, is one of the best games ever produced..."
Personally, I think it's THE best game ever made. A crowning achievement in graphics on such restricted hardware, music, controls, level design, plot (simple but poignant, and great for a Mario game), and the amount of innovation.
I'd like to see SMG3 instead of just a remake of the first one.
Pretty funny.
Unfortunately the recent arrival of Galaxy 2 on the eShop rather diminishes the chances of an HD update anytime soon, imo.
... Although it's curious they didn't start with the release of Galaxy 1.
@CB85 maybe they're working on an HD version of the first one? It's a long shot, but if they were it would make sense why they didn't make it available for download...
Once I triggered a funny glitch at Deep Dark Galaxy, I was jumping on one of those crabs and suddenly they became... not solid. I could go through them and they didn't hurt me. I guess it was nice.
Now, give us Super Mario Galaxy HD Nintendo, this game is truly a masterpiece
I believe Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine were much better games.
Out of all the glitches/exploits done here, only one has been identified as being able to crash the game. That is what I call quality, especially when you compare that to so many other games that crash simply by doing normal things.
@ColdingLight
I mean release SM Galaxy 1 on Wii VC because they've released SM Galaxy 2 already.
@ShadJV
That's true, but then wouldn't it make sense to do a Galaxy 1 HD first, then a Galaxy 2 HD next, not a straight low-res port of Galaxy 2 first, followed by an HD Galaxy 1...?
I would actually like another mario 64 remake but for the New 3ds so it would have good camera controls and better graphics than the ds version.
Some of those, like where you have to jump off of walls, look hard to pull off.
I found a glitch in Super Mario Galaxy 2 with the Throwback Galaxy: You can get to the bonus platform using the Cloud suit by long jumping off the main level, but you will be stuck their and cannot get back without suicide.
You'll need two clouds to get to the Platform without using the warp. Then you can long jump off the platform, use a cloud, and long jump off the cloud platform, and you will float through space for a while before you time out and die.
If you grab the cloud suit, warp to the bonus platform, and long jump - spin - long jump off the platform, you will again float through space for a while, but the timer expires and warps you back to the main island before you die.
Kinda pointless but funny that you can jump into empty space and not die.
= = = = = = = =
Also not really a glitch per say, but sometimes you can escape the gravity of a small planetoid in either game by triple jumping + spin jump. If you do this off the trials galaxy in the comet observatory from SMG1, you will free-fall then warp back to the green sling star. I don't believe it is possible to die in the observatory.
@VanillaLake I believe that too. For me, Super Mario Galaxy is when Mario games stopped being great. #N64/GCNForLife
@SuprisedStar I'm glad that I'm not alone. Super Mario Galaxy is 100% action and the small planets idea is not that nice. On the other hand, Super Mario 64 and Sunshine are brilliant games, full of exploration, mysteries and action.
@VanillaLake I used to feel that way, but I've come to love SMG. SM64 is my favorite game ever released, though.
@outburst DK64 3D (as much as I want it to), won't happen due to licensing issues with Rare. I really sometimes hate you Micro$oft. That's why it wasn't on the Wii's VC.
Mario Galaxy games are good due to its clever use of sphere planets - it reduces the problem of uncooperative camera. However, I believe 3D world is better in term of gameplay.
Mario galaxy 3?
@Monado_III
Well if they'll remake it, they could remove those Rare IPs in the game. If it could work though.
Also, Kirby's epic yarn Wii (which I intended on my first post but forgot along the way) could work on a 3D remake.
My all time favorite game for the Wii for many reasons. Not only did the controls work well without excessive waggle abuse, but the overall presentation of the game itself not only looked amazing but also sounded amazing. I can't help to wonder if games for the Wii had that level of production value showing many shaders that are just never seen in other games all while holding a solid 60 FPS for such a meager console forgotten behind the mainstream support of the 360 and PS3.
Having a official 1080p remaster of the game with much higher resolution textures and advanced lighting techniques to the level of Super Mario 3D World.
If the existing game as it is now is perfect for 480p. A shift of the game on a large TV at full 1080p/60 would really look out of place no matter the content. Some games age well, some don't and require a bit of polish to look like a worthwhile value.
Seeing this video brings back some great memories and I feel like firing up the old Wii to play SMG and SMG2 just for the great times I had with them.
When I watch this it reminds me how much more I loved galaxy compared to 3d world
@DBPirate It seems like they plan to remake this (Or else why start with 2). Maybe not for the Wii U.
I experienced a glitch where I was facing Bowser and when he did his jump to stomp on Mario he jumped so high apparently that he went off the screen and I laughed so hard. I had Mario just run around with a messed up camera, then I exited the level. Good times.
