Super Smash Bros. for Wii U will be the first title to support amiibo toys, with the initial range designed for the brawler — they will eventually be supported in a host of other games, too. Though we have an idea of how the figures will be integrated into the game, the official website has begun to lay out the details.
First up, it's explained that when you scan an amiibo toy on the GamePad they'll automatically be placed in an empty fighter slot; as shown during E3 they'll then assist you in battle. As it fights it levels up — a process that's quicker when it takes on other FP (amiibo) fighters.
In addition to levelling up these characters will learn from experience, picking up moves and triggers from opponents. You can also help them along by giving them equippable gear that increases attack, defence and speed, in addition to adjusting their Special moves; this is a similar process to customising Mii and roster characters in the existing 3DS release.
It's emphasized that, depending on customisation and your amiibo's experience, each toy and related fighter will develop in unique ways. Also useful is the fact that they'll earn gold and custom parts to add to your collection.
The amiibo implementation is shaping up to be an interesting extension of the existing customisation available in the game. Eventually — in 2015 — the 3DS version is set to support the amiibo range through a special NFC dock or, in the case of the New Nintendo 3DS, by scanning on the system itself.
Are you excited about the amiibo functionality in Super Smash Bros.? Let us know.

cant wate to get my hands on some Amiibo's ^^
As long as my wallet let's me, I want to get one or two
I'm not going to use them for smash. They'll just sit at my desk.
This has some intriguing potential. I love the idea of leveling up and customisation options. Cross-game interaction would be uber cool if they choose the right games. Would really love a "my mii" amiibo...then maybe I could get my own gold pants at long last. Each would have to be modelled individually so a pipe dream, but that would still be neat...
Think they'll release a puzzle swap panel for Amiibos? I was expecting one for Smash, but maybe that will come with the WiiU version's release?
Hopefully they have some better uses for Amiibo in other games, the way they're used in Smash just seems kinda lame.
I can see some pretty beefy competitive scenes popping up surrounding Amiibo. It's pokemon on another level!
I love the idea behind it, and maybe i would buy one, but i wont, i think they are too expensive :/
Has any mention been made on if any of these initial characters will be supported in more than Smash? I'd love to pick them all up but seems pretty pricey for just one game and looses what Disney Infinity and Skylanders have in new games supporting all older figures.
I already have Samus pre-ordered. I can't decide if I also want Mario, or Kirby. HALP.
@Nico07 - Nintendo stated that amiibo characters would be supported by Captain Toad, Yoshi's Woolly World, Mario Party 10 and Mario Kart 8. How exactly they use them is unknown so far.
2015 is gonna be a really freaking awesome year for games.
I think the amiibos look cool. But at $13 a pop I was hoping for a little more than just using them this way. Like... They just appear and fight? And you can equip them with gear? You mean kinda like every other character in the game that you DON'T have to buy a $13 figurine for?! I mean seriously. The amiibo feature in Smash Bros just seems very forced to me. Why would I want to watch an AI fight and level up when I could have way more fun doing it myself? And why pay extra for it? Seems like a giant ripoff to me.
I hope amiibos are used in more interesting ways in future games, cause right now they're just looking like glorified action figure collectibles.
I'll get Mario chars, DK chars, and LoZ chars for the mean time. Maybe Samus and Fox. They will be used more in many games like MK8, YWW, Capn Toad, Mario Party 10 and Zelda U. I'll probably get the others if I'll have extra budget for it.
Now I wonder if we will have some sort of Pokemon-like card game (like Blizzard's hearthstone) coming on the Wii U or 3DS. But instead of using cards, we use these amiibos.
If you look at the character select screen, it has secrer fighters like ness and ganondorf but it also has unannounced secret fighters like bowser jr and jigglypuff

@bizcuthammer
The fine line they're trying to walk here is that they aren't REQUIRED to buy to enjoy the game - just more of an add on. I totally get your point, too. What they're trying to explain (I want to still see this for myself, though) is that the Amiibo FP fighters will mimic your fighting habits and not so much behave like typical AI. Again, I'm not so convinced about this myself. To me, if these have outside applications from Smash that are more intriguing, then I'll be a little bit more onboard as well. For right now, they look like cool figures that have a slight to little impact on gameplay. If they would only release some features outside of Smash and enlighten us, until then, they're STILL a mystery to me.
waste of money
Do you not get to use and play as your figure in game then? Like skylanders?
@bizcuthammer
Who knows we'll get some sort of free Skylanders game that utilizes amiibos in the future. Or some sort of Pokemon game or Blizzard's Hearthstone where you unlock/summon fighters through amiibos. But yeah, I agree with you they don't do much with SSB. But it's better that way than to force you to buy amiibos just to unlock characters on SSB.
It's an interesting feature, but nothing I'll see myself use much. For the most part, amiibo's will be a collectible for me, albeit an expensive one.
@DESS-M-8 What would be the point of that? The characters are already in the selection screen, and unlocking them via amiibo would turn the figures into exactly the kind of physical DLC Nintendo avoids and Activision/Disney embraces.
Amiibo is supposed to offer additional features that are at no point required to 100%, or even finish, any games.
@DESS-M-8 @Kaze_Memaryu
Maybe we'll get a game that utilize it that way. But thank goodness we're not forced to buy amiibos to fully enjoy SSB U.
Character select screen, like the 3DS one, has extra space! Wii U to 3DS characters, maybe?
Interesting way to develop. Now I wonder how skilled the Amiibos can be once they reach pro/max level. Smarter then a lvl 9 cpu or maybe skilled enough to give a human SSB veteran a run for their money.
SPOILER Ness is in one of the pics. the one that shows character select.
"this is a similar process to customising Mii and roster characters in the existing 3DS release."
Like pretty much everybody else here has said - we're supposed to buy toys so that we can watch them play but not actually play with them ourselves? Yeah, thats a good use of my money, not.
Well at least they're starting to show something. Was just in Target adn not a single sign of amiibo, Bayonetta 2, SSB U, or Captain Toad anywhere. But it's just barely a start.
@rjejr you can also fight them and use them to beat that friend you never could. they're also good for:
Collecting dust :/
Farming Rewards
One-way staring contests
And more!
Levels up faster vs other amiibo huh? Good thing I'm buying all of them. I love that they can farm rewards so when I go on trophy sprees I don't have to break my hands.
Does it level up for the purpose of making you have to grind it, or does it level up because it wants you to grow it in a specific way?
I don't really understand how it will even work. Is one Level 50 Mario Amiibo with default customs identical to any other level 50 Mario Amiibo with default customs? Or do they differ depending on the playstyle you were using against it during its level up process?
After reading this I still feel the same. I don't care for their NFC functions, but I love how they look and I will get a bunch for collection purposes.
All of this replay value they are adding to Smash this time around with a version on both handheld and a console, I think Nintendo and Sakurai do not plan on releasing another Smash game until like 2024 assuming DLC will happen ...
You are allowed to go against them, right? lol
@MrMario02 How is Ness a spoiler
This seems interesting, and it could make some funny spin off tournaments of amiibo vs. amiibo. I'll certainly buy a pair for me.
I'll grab a pair but I'm not sure which ones yet...
This is looking more and more awesome.
I still dont get it
Very excited to get my hands on some amiibo, but I'm still not feeling like these specific Smash uses are anything to write home about. For now, it seems like they'll mostly stand pretty on my gaming shelves, at least until the day an amiibo-specific, Skylanders-like game hits.
Hey Look! JigglyPuff and Bowser Jr!
NINTENDO LEAKED THE NEXT 2 CHARCTERS!
JK. I am really excited to get these ammibo's. That $100 gift card will be worth it!
Looks lame.
Honestly I'm just buying my favorite characters to put on my desk as a paper weight/ decoration. The game application is just a bonus to me.
Where's my Lucina amiibo!?
I want Mr. Game & Watch
I plan on getting all of them I think they are awesome.
I'm still not really sure if I will buy any of these. I feel like they're just going to end up collecting dust, and it's disappointing the ones that interest me aren't coming out till December, and the new 3DS not till next year in my region.
Looks fun, can't wait!
i might just get a few for display
This product should evolve into other interactive Nintendo products in the future.
I am going to buy a Link amiibo for sure, train that thing to Max, then start sparring against it with other characters. I hope I can make an AI that is almost as capable of a fighter as I am.
@Kaze_Memaryu it would be your own customisable fighter like Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution that you could "zap" into any wii u locally. Take your Amiibo with you to a mates house for a smash party BOOM in goes your kick and fighter you've built up.
I have already paid off the first 18 Amiibo's.
I will own them all.
But, if it doesn't start glowing at Lvl 50. I will be upset after seeing this. :<
I'm buying some Amiibo to put on my desk, but the Smash interaction sounds pretty boring. Hopefully future games can do things that are more interesting.
Once again characters are revealed before Sakurai says it
Every time I start reading about these trying to figure out what they do, I get bored and stop. I don't want or need any of this-I just want to play video games. I'm glad some people are excited, though.
@OzKat Nice! I'm paying off my set next month! So excited!
@bizcuthammer Wow, this was exactly what I was thinking. I couldn't have said it better. The figures look really cool, but I need more then what Smash+amiibo brings to the table to start purchasing the figures. It almost seems like Nintendo saw how successful Disney and Activision were with their figures and wanted in on the action, and threw the Amiibo thing together just to cash in. The idea doesn't seem developed enough. We need more info!!!!!
I think if Amiibo got it's own game similar to the Streetpass Plaza on the 3DS, I would be more interested.
Too many games right now.
Too much money for me.
Also, Pokemon Alpha/Omega launches the very same day!
Sure, I'll be getting at least one Amiibo, but maybe for 2015.
I'll probably pick up a couple of Amiibos (Link, Samus, Zelda and Captain Falcon, most likely), but I can't say how much I'll use them.
@King47 your comment with that avatar sounds negative lol
