Super Smash Bros. for Wii U will be the first title to support amiibo toys, with the initial range designed for the brawler — they will eventually be supported in a host of other games, too. Though we have an idea of how the figures will be integrated into the game, the official website has begun to lay out the details.

First up, it's explained that when you scan an amiibo toy on the GamePad they'll automatically be placed in an empty fighter slot; as shown during E3 they'll then assist you in battle. As it fights it levels up — a process that's quicker when it takes on other FP (amiibo) fighters.

In addition to levelling up these characters will learn from experience, picking up moves and triggers from opponents. You can also help them along by giving them equippable gear that increases attack, defence and speed, in addition to adjusting their Special moves; this is a similar process to customising Mii and roster characters in the existing 3DS release.

It's emphasized that, depending on customisation and your amiibo's experience, each toy and related fighter will develop in unique ways. Also useful is the fact that they'll earn gold and custom parts to add to your collection.

The amiibo implementation is shaping up to be an interesting extension of the existing customisation available in the game. Eventually — in 2015 — the 3DS version is set to support the amiibo range through a special NFC dock or, in the case of the New Nintendo 3DS, by scanning on the system itself.
