Another week of Japanese chart results, and another happy story for the 3DS. In recent weeks we've seen consistent success for Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon and the ever-green Animal Crossing: New Leaf, but the release of Tomodachi Collection: New Life, the life-simulation game currently exclusive to Japan, has given another substantial boost to the handheld.
In the software results the new title has seized number one with an impressive haul of sales, with a number of other 3DS titles scattered around the top 20; in somewhat disappointing news, there are no Wii U releases in any position. One other landmark is that New Super Mario Bros. 2 has passed two million physical retail sales in Japan — lifetime sales are in parenthesis, below.
1. [3DS] Tomodachi Collection: New Life – 404,858 (New)
2. [PS3] Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 – 87,661 (New)
3. [PSP] Seven Dragon 2020 II – 73,697 (New)
4. [3DS] Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon – 41,296 (557,271)
5. [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf – 34,482 (3,096,559)

7. [3DS] Card Fight!! Vanguard Ride to Victory!! – 9,161 (53,698)
8. [PS3] One Piece: Pirate Warriors 2 – 7,887 (378,645)
9. [3DS] Run For Money: Flee From the Strongest Hunters in History – 6,294 (464,573)
10. [360] Monster Hunter Frontier G1 Premium Package – 6,042 (New)

13. [3DS] Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (Best Price!) (Capcom, 11/15/12) – 5,180 (290,004)

15. [PSP] Sword Art Online: Infinity Moment – 5,001 (191,444)
16. [PSV] Muramasa Rebirth – 4,555 (67,842)
17. [3DS] Mario Kart 7 – 4,518 (2,029,645)
18. [PS3] Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix – 4,270 (193,439)
19. [PSV] Soul Sacrifice – 4,162 (164,825)
20. [Wii] Taiko Drum Master Wii Super Wonderful Edition – 3,950 (453,256)
On the hardware front it was another dominant week for the 3DS, and in particular the LL (XL) model. The Wii U has returned to four-figure levels as it awaits big software releases — last week's sales are in parenthesis.
3DS LL – 57,089 (28,139)
3DS – 18,833 (18,584)
PlayStation Vita – 15,011 (14,112)
PlayStation 3 – 13,915 (14,039)
Wii U – 8,798 (9,984)
PSP – 7,816 (7,566)
Wii – 1,379 (1,383)
Xbox 360 – 515 (492)
Some happy news for Nintendo in the Japanese handheld space, as always seems to be the case.

I really hope Tomodachi gets localized. It looks really cool.
When companies talk about sales figures, are these the number of units the company has sold to distributors or actual customers who have bought the console/game?
Impressive sales figures for the Tomodachi Collection.
Wow...
I've also been hearing stuff about this and it does look interesting.
@Sakura When it comes to the Japanese figures, I think it's for games and systems actually sold in stores. For example when the 3DS launched Nintendo sent out four million models, but its quoted sales for the launch period for 3.6 million.
Honestly though, I can't say I'm 100% sure.
Tomadachi was very well promoted by NINTENDO and one Mr. Iwata wheres cheaptrick to bury him now? hiding with all the other Nostradamus'es i guess.
Tomodachi Collection: New Life is a life simulation game? Wonder why they need that when they have ACNL!
Wish they'd localize it. It looks fun.
I don't think we have a chance of this being localised. I believe the DS one did pretty well over there too, and we never got that.
This game looks amazing! Localisation please!
"3DS LL (XL) sales double"
Any thoughts on why, all the other hardware stayed the same week-to-week?
Was there a price drop or a special ed.? Just don't see why LL sales would double why the smaller 3DS stays the same. Though having played on both the 3DS is NOTICEABLY bigger, pocket size or no it's just so much bigger it's an easy choice really I guess.
@ThomasBW84 Thanks! Just wondered.
I love Nintendo's life simulation games and I was one of those people excited for Stage Debut back in the day until it was cancelled.
To me, I really hope that this is localized. Life Simulation is a fantastic genre and needs to be further recognized here in the states.
New Leaf, New Life... anyone else seeing a connection?
@3Dash It's more like a coincidence. The Japanese name of New Leaf is totally different (とびだせ, literally means "Jump out"), and New Life (新生活) is not an official English name (and it's not likely that it will have one in the future; or if it has, may be totally different, because there is no "old life" for western players).
@Barbiegurl777 Wait, Lin and Kohei are doing Tomodachi Collection too? o.o
Checking right now.
@rjejr Special LL version for tomodachi colleciton (Bundle)
@mullen Eh, whatever.
What surprised me the most was this:
Luigi's Mansion has been out for a month, and first week sales of Tomodachi equals 73% of Luigi's Mansion's 4 week sales. In other words, Tomodachi should surpass LM sales within 2 days.
@mullen You're right! I bet that explains the jump in LL/XL sales.
This is why we need a 3DS Miiverse. Imagine taking to the Japanese game sections to show which games we are interested in just like what happened with Earthbound. Tomodachi for the west!!!
The japanese sure love their crap!
iwata looks adorable
Tomodachi Collection for NDS was awesome. I imported it... I don't think the chances of a localization are very high. Too bad though. It's really fun.
@mullen - Thank you, sounds like that would explain it.
If only this game would be localized... All I want is a translation, I can learn about the Japanese cultural elements by myself... I wish Nintendo would listen to its players' feedback and give the game a chance.
Edit: I am actually considering importing it. (And try and improve my Japanese in order to play it.)
