It's that time again, when the Japanese chart results emerge and show us that Nintendo's homeland is still in love with the 3DS. It's been a period of sustained success for the handheld in the region, and in light of the Q3 financial report listing 29.84 million sales — as of 30th December — we can be pretty confident that the 30 million landmark has long been passed.
This week's software top 20 continues the usual trend of featuring plenty of 3DS games, while both Wii and Wii U are represented by one game each; lifetime sales are in the final set of parenthesis.
1. [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf (Nintendo, 11/08/12) – 65,740 (2,431,866)
2. [3DS] Fantasy Life (Level-5, 12/27/12) – 20,606 (208,378)
3. [PS3] DmC Devil May Cry (Capcom, 01/17/13) – 15,157 (157,213)
4. [3DS] New Super Mario Bros. 2 (Nintendo, 07/28/12) – 12,546 (1,899,022)
5. [PS3] PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale (SCEJ, 01/31/13) – 11,758 (New)
6. [3DS] Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (Best Price!) (Capcom, 11/15/12) – 11,330 (207,573)
7. [PS3] Accel World: Kasoku no Chouten (Limited Edition) (Namco Bandai, 01/31/13) – 10,551 (New)
8. [PSV] Demon Gaze (Kadokawa Games, 01/24/13) – 10,424 (35,740)
9. [Wii] Taiko Drum Master Wii Super Wonderful Edition (Namco Bandai, 11/29/12) – 10,125 (377,290)
10. [PSP] Accel World: Kasoku no Chouten (Limited Edition) (Namco Bandai, 01/31/13) – 8,633 (New)
11. [3DS] Inazuma Eleven Go 2 Chrono Stone Nepuu / Raimei (Level-5, 12/13/12) – 7,754 (408,085)
12. [PS3] The God and the Fate Revolution Paradox (Nippon Ichi Software, 01/24/13) – 7.606 (31,024)
13. [3DS] Paper Mario: Sticker Star (Nintendo, 12/06/12) – 7,537 (511,644)
14. [PS3] Hitman: Absolution (Square Enix, 01/24/13) – 7,490 (29,723)
15. [3DS] Taiko Drum Master: Chibi Dragon and the Mysterious Orb (Namco Bandai, 07/12/12) – 7,450 (408,575)
16. [PSP] Digimon Adventure (Namco Bandai, 01/17/13) – 7,397 (69,195)
17. [3DS] Run For Money: Flee From the Strongest Hunters in History (Namco Bandai, 07/05/12) – 7,288 (413,432)
18. [PSP] Renai 0 Kilometere Portable (Limited Edition) (Alchemist, 01/31/13) – 6,884 (New)
19. [Wii U] New Super Mario Bros. U (Nintendo, 12/08/12) – 6,338 (454,929)
20. [PS3] Call of Duty: Black Ops II Dubbed Edition (Square Enix, 12/20/12) – 6,166 (119,129)
The hardware sales are very similar to the previous week, which is excellent for the 3DS XL and original model, but means a continuation of comparatively modest sales for Wii U. As Nintendo itself has acknowledged, major game releases from Spring onwards are likely to be what is required to get the systems flying off shelves; last week's sales are in parenthesis.
3DS LL – 51,654 (48,226)
3DS – 26,028 (26,898)
PlayStation 3 – 18,106 (18,322)
Wii U – 12,959 (13,746)
PSP – 12,191 (12,897)
PlayStation Vita – 9,596 (9,748)
Wii – 1,904 (2,093)
Xbox 360 – 870 (611)
The usual trends continue, helped along by a certain game that many of us are dying to play; 2.5 million sales must only be a couple of weeks away for Animal Crossing: New Leaf.

I WANT FANTASY LIFE NOW!!!! Oh and Bravely Default!
@Tech101 I want ACNL so much... or just something, LMDM, LCU, whatever, it's all taking too long... perhaps I'll get FEA later and see if that holds me over.
@3Dash I've got so much I'm getting in the next 3 months that I don't care about New Leaf atm. It could be Christmas for all I care. I'm still picking up another 5 3ds game's here in less then 3 months! I just want an announcement for those two above for localization!
There are a lot of good games coming out this year.
@3Dash btw what's LCU? I can't figure that one out for the life of me.
I know Japan is a tiny place, but only 11,758 units for Playstation: All-Stars in it's opening week? I guess even Japan feels it's only an okay game as well.
@CrissCross87 it is a tiny place, but expect pokemon x and y sales in first week around 450 k or more . The fact is battle royal is a shameless ripoff and everyone knows it.
@CrissCross87 Is it a fighting game? They usually don't do well over there. Just look at the 3ds game with all the characters from Namco Capcom and Sega I believe. Can't remember the name but that also didn't fair to well over there even if it had strong RPG elements! Project X Zone is the name.
Wii U is doing poor because they don't have anything happening software wise until later. Why pay if you have nothing to play?
I want the 3ds games now. Later on I won't have time. Lucky americans that can enjoy FE: Awakening
Run For Money: Flee From the Strongest Hunters in History
The God and the Fate Revolution Paradox
/sigh I wish we named our games this well in the US of A...
I wish more people outside of Japan played handhelds. In America, and it seems like this is the case in Europe as well, it is like people think gaming is childish, especially handheld gaming. This is NOT the case, whatsoever. There are a plethora of people who would adore games like Animal Crossing but they will never give it a chance and instead play their crappy iPhone and Facebook games. This is why I don't mind games like Wii Fit (even though I don't play them). If it gets someone's foot in the door and opens their eyes to the joys of gaming then that is ok with me.
Edit: It is just amazing to me how many Japanese people love and purchase handhelds and games for them. I need to see this first hand some day...
Is it supposed to be the 3DS LL on the hardware list? I'm not sure if they call the XL something different in Japan.
Anyways, the 3DS is still shining as usual.
@Ideal_Hero Yeah its the LL in Japan.
Sucks how you can't play online only local... but I still want it lol
What's that Wii Drum Master game about? Sounds cool. Lol.
Give Bravely Default and DQ VII and SMT 4 to Rapido!!
@CrissCross87 Japan is a tiny place?
Google search "population of Japan" buddy
Wikipedia has Animal Crossing listed for 2.73 million copies, and its source is Nintendo's Financial Results Briefing.
I can't wait to see what happens to these sales charts once Pokemon X/Y hits.
*Makes a wish for a new Robopon game on 3DS
I bet ACNL will sell over 5 million by 3rd Quarter. And Pokemon X & Y to sell 10 million by 2015
I think lcu means lego city undercover for 3ds...when pokémon is released there I think they are going to sell over a million copies.
@Inev the numbers of nintendo financial briefing include download sales the aboves only retail sales.
@darklight I agree with you and by the end of 2013 when acnl is released everywhere I think it could already have benn sold like over 10 million times.
@Tech101 It's Lego City Undercover, sorry I didn't reply sooner.
