You may not realise it, but the Wii U hasn't actually launched in its native Japan yet. Us lucky westerners may already be knee-deep in Mario, ZombiU and Miiverse, but in the Land of the Rising Sun the system doesn't hit store shelves until the 8th of December.
While the Nintendo Direct presentations for North America and Europe later today will focus on games coming out later this year and in early 2013, you can expect the Japanese version to focus more on the release of the console itself.
You can watch the video live here, and we'll be providing commentary where we can. Enjoy!

Might as well check out this stream whilst my Wii U and 3DS receive simultaneous firmware updates.

Did anyone know that the 3DS update added new levels to the NSMB2 shop? Just saying....
ah, tr G in HD... wait, is this tri Ultimate? Is there more material ?
It amazes me that Nintendo don't release the console in Japan first, must be killing their home fans!
where's the europe eshop 'heads up' or have i missed it
I won't be buying a Wii U (yet), but I might go out on Saturday to see how ridiculous the lines at the big electronics stores get.
@erv Tri Ultimate IS Tri G, just a localization name change.
@antdickens Here is Japan there really is still a focus on the 3DS, and portable gaming in general. That's why I think the push to have more connectivity between 3DS and WiiU games like with Monster Hunter 3G is a smart move.
There really doesn't seem to be as big of a movement towards the WiiU so far, and the system will only have about half the number of launch games as it did in other regions. Also, the only Japanese exclusive game so far is MH 3G HD ver.
Do want Dragon Quest X. Please bring it to Europe. Pretty please.
Did Lego Iwata just hold up a carrot? Either Nintendo is messing with us or they really are hinting something.
Lego Iwata =best thing ever.
I demand a mini figure of him,or even better a playable version of Lego Iwata in the game.
