Shigeru Miyamoto is one of the industry's founding fathers and there's no doubt the industry would be a very different place without him, so it seems fair that he's paid accordingly. Recently documents that reveal the pay of top Japanese executives, including Nintendo have come to light, and the salaries of Mr Miyamoto and Nintendo President Satoru Iwata make interesting reading.
For 2009, Mr Iwata earnt a salary of $760,000, with bonuses on top boosting his pay to a sizeable $2.09 million, and his fellow directors also made over $1 million after bonuses. Shigeru Miyamoto, who until recently was thought to earn a wage similar to his design peers, is actually the second-highest paid staff member at Nintendo, raking in $1.4m in 2009.
It seems that ? Block is still full of coins for Mr Iwata and colleagues.

Cool. Good for him.
Really great for them. Now can we get some reasonable pricing on 3DS? Nintendo is only one of the most profitable companies in the world!
OMG that was so unpredictable. sarcasm
There's a lot of money to be earned in the video game industry.
Well, DUH! lol
That dude is rich.
it took you this long to realize this??? lmao
rolls eyesits like saying dolly parton is large breasted.
awesome... that's still like nothing if you take a short eye angle on what even bad managers earn. but japanese salary is totaly diffrent. and i love' em for that.
shigeru miyamoto deserves every penny he gets, considering how hard he`s worked to get where his today, and as i understand he still works hard for the pay he gets.
nintendo`s work ethic should be taught to some of those lazy b`sterds that are happy to sit on dole que, waiting for there government hand outs.
How old is he? He still looks pretty young too.
There are many talented game designers, programmers and artists that are not wealthy, just receiving bog standard pay packets and struggling to make ends meet. Shigeru is one of a small minority my friends. The wealthiest people in the games industry haven't even played a game, let alone contributed to one
@Timp29: He's 57 years old
I wouldn't mind one of those ? blocks myself.
Lol I would like to know how that is breaking news. Thats like saying Breaking News creator of Microsoft is wealthy or the creator of Mickey Mouse was wealthy. I sure would hope that hes wealthy after all the things that Mario has been in lol.
@15: I'm pretty certain the subtitle was meant to be taken sarcastically.
I saw this story elsewhere (Joystiq or IGN) and they pointed out how little Iwata and Miyamoto make compared to many other top people in the gaming industry. There's a reason Nintendo was turning a profit even during the GameCube era.
Considering what Miyamoto means to Nintendo, and gaming in general for that matter, I think he's actually underpaid...especially with how successful Nintendo has been lately.
Those salaries, for all Nintendo's top people, are actually fairly low for a major international corporation.
The games industry in general pays less than other areas of IT (let alone finance, manufacturing etc).
Haha that's what you get for being extremely creative
Is this US Dollars?
Yep, it's USD.
It's news because until now, as the article says he was thought to have insisted on an average wage. I don't think anyone will hold it against him though, but you can expect those offers from Microsoft to be pouring in now. What are we thinking... more than it cost to buy Rare? Personally I think he'd be worth at least 5x as much to them.
We all know they're getting the bucks for what they do, even if not the exact figure. Good stuff for 'em. Now, can we get something reasonable on the 3DS?
Miyamoto is nothing! Activisions Kotick made 15 million. http://www.diygamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/bobby-kotick-money-bags.jpg
Talk about an unfair world.
We pay more money to the crooks who destroy our banks and oceans than a genius who tickles are imagination and makes us smile.
Blame the Americans for their greed not the Japanese for being responsible with their business leaders' pay .
@post 27
I'm confused.
How do you figure the Japanese are being responsible with their business leaders pay? From this alone? You do realize the former head of Nintendo is worth billions, right?
@post 28
I understand the confusion. For the longest time, the Japanese had the business model that the mangers would never make more than 10 times the pay of an entrance employee, but it is true tha in recent years they have adopted more of an American model.
I think Miyamato could make more money if he wanted to, but with more money comes more restrictions on creativity so he settles for more creative freedom and a modest salary of a cool million dollars. I respect him for placing creativity beyond wealth which I think is a traditional quality.
Im glad! That's how much they SHOULD make! It's a fair amount for the work they do, unlike these bankers who make freakin 50 million for doing nothing.
I think Miyamoto and Iwata are definitely underpaid. Do we have similar figures for top managers of Activision-Blizzard and EA?
